Joel Embiid, Sixers facing must-win game against Heat

Joel Embiid was a Most Valuable Player candidate all season.

But Jimmy Butler has arguably been the best player in the Eastern Conference semifinals matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Butler scored 23 points and was able to rest down the stretch as the Miami Heat throttled the Sixers 120-85 in Game 5 on Tuesday.

Butler will now look to lead the Heat into the Eastern Conference finals with a victory at Philadelphia Thursday in Game 6.

The balanced Heat feature a number of stellar players including Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.

Butler, however, is their unquestioned leader.

“He’s a great competitor at his core,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Butler. “When you get into a competition, he understands the full deal — that you have to do it on both ends. And he’s able to compete with a ferocity and an incredibly stable mind. That is really unique.

“When it gets the craziest is when he’s really locked in on making sure that it’s solid winning basketball for our team.”

After taking a 2-0 series lead, the Heat dropped both games in Philadelphia. While they still own homecourt advantage, the goal is to capture a much-needed road victory in a hostile environment.

“We’re capable of it, if we get some stops,” Butler said. “It’s a hard place to play.”

“It’s just one game,” Spoelstra added. “They know it. We know it.”

Miami’s Kyle Lowry will miss Game 6 due to a strained left hamstring. Lowry aggravated the hamstring during the first half of Game 4 and again in the second half. Lowry sat out Game 5.

The Sixers hope to avoid being eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals for the fourth time in the past five years.

Philadelphia hasn’t advanced to the Eastern Conference finals since 2001 when it defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games.

If the Sixers are able to force a Game 7, they’ll need more production from Embiid, who had 17 points and only five rebounds in Game 5.

Embiid, who’s playing with a torn ligament in his right thumb and a face mask to protect an orbital fracture, looked tentative. He also appeared to tweak his back.

“This is a ‘lose-lose’ situation for me,” Embiid said. “If I don’t play, I probably get called soft and if I play and I play bad, they probably come up with a bunch of stuff that I guess he’s just not good enough. It’s all about staying — not get too high or too low and just going out there and really try to dig very deep and try to do whatever I can.”

Yet the reason the Sixers are now trailing is simple if you ask Embiid.

“Defense. We didn’t play defense,” he said. “We weren’t physical enough. We weren’t locked in from the beginning and they took advantage of it.”

The Sixers also didn’t receive an All-Star performance from James Harden, who shined in Game 4 with 31 points. In Game 5, Harden managed only 14 points in 37 minutes.

“They got 31 points in that first quarter. We were not engaged defensively and that slowed down our offense,” Harden said. “We have to be engaged. We got to be locked in.”

Oilers D Darnell Nurse suspended 1 game over headbutt

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse was suspended one game following a hearing with the NHL on Wednesday for the headbutt he delivered to Los Angeles Kings forward Phillip Danault in Game 5 of their playoff series.

Nurse’s teammate Zack Kassian also was disciplined by the NHL on Wednesday for his actions in the same game.

The incident with Nurse occurred with five seconds remaining in the second period of Tuesday night’s game, won by the Kings, 5-4 in overtime. The Kings took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven, first-round series.

Nurse appeared to ram his helmet into the face of Danault, setting off a scrum. No penalties were called on the play.

Nurse, who logged 26 minutes Tuesday night, will miss Thursday night’s Game 6 in Los Angeles.

Nurse recorded 35 points (nine goals, 26 assists) and 54 penalty minutes in 71 games during the regular season.

Kassian was fined the maximum $5,000 for crosschecking the Kings’ Sean Durzi at 19:00 of the second period. Kassian, who scored Edmonton’s first goal of the game, was assessed a two-minute minor.

Justin Thomas on players interested in LIV Golf: ‘just go’

0

One day after the PGA Tour denied its members permission to participate in the competing LIV Golf Invitational Series, multiple players who had no intention of leaving said Wednesday that the decision should not be surprising.

Justin Thomas was asked about the decision by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan one day before the start of the AT&T Byron Nelson at McKinney, Texas.

“You know, it’s like, look, if you want to go, go,” Thomas said. “I mean there’s been plenty of guys that have been advocates of it and have just talked it up all the time and they have been guys behind the scenes that are saying, ‘I’m going, I’m doing this.’ And like my whole thing is, like just go then.

“… Everybody’s entitled to do what they want, you know what I mean? Like if I wanted to go play that tour I could go play that tour. But I’m loyal to the PGA Tour.”

It remains unknown what punishment would be handed out to players who compete in the Saudi-backed events anyway. The first LIV Golf event is set for June 9-11 at London. That would be in direct conflict with the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open.

“Look, if you want to (play in an LIV Golf event), no one’s stopping you, but what we have here is pretty good too, considering every week we’re playing for a pretty great purse on pretty great golf courses and the benefits that we have off the golf course on top of that it’s pretty tough to beat,” said player Will Zalatoris, who also is a member of the player advisory council.

“Purses are only going up here, but on top of that, like I said, no one’s stopping anyone from doing it. But I think everyone agrees that the decision that came out yesterday is the best for the (PGA) Tour.”

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1-ranked player in the world who won the Masters Tournament last month, said he wasn’t aware of the PGA Tour’s decision until late Tuesday. Less than 24 hours later, his thoughts were on the same page as Thomas and Zalatoris.

“If you’re playing here on the PGA Tour, playing in something that could be a rival series to the PGA Tour, being a member of our tour, it’s definitely not something where we want our membership to do because it’s going to harm the tournament that we have opposite that,” Scheffler said.

“… I’m sure that’s why they did not release the players. Because if we have 15 guys go over there and play, that hurts the RBC and the Canadian Open.”

Patriots claim TE Matt Sokol off waivers from Lions

The New England Patriots on Wednesday claimed tight end Matt Sokol off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

After going undrafted out of Michigan State, the 26-year-old played in two games with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, seeing action on 15 plays. He was originally signed to a futures contract by the Lions’ in 2019 before finding his way to the practice squad of the Chargers, who waived him in 2021.

Sokol was on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad last season before signing a future contract with the Lions in January. Detroit released him Tuesday.

Kyrie Irving, Nets GM to meet, plot what’s next

Kyrie Irving and the Nets appear to be at a crossroads.

General manager Sean Marks fueled further speculation about the future of Irving in Brooklyn on Wednesday when asked about the 30-year-old returning to the team next season.

“We need people here that want to be here,” Marks said, “(that) are selfless, that want to be part of something bigger than themselves. And there’s an objective and there’s a goal at stake here. And in order to do that, we’re going to need availability from everybody.”

Marks said a sitdown with Irving in the near future was part of his routine offseason plan. The “availability” concern could easily be applied to point guard Ben Simmons, who didn’t suit up for the Nets after being acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers on Feb. 10.

Simmons came to the Nets in the James Harden deal after the relationship between Irving and Harden went south.

Irving was limited to road games for the majority of the season because of his stance on the COVID-19 vaccination and the City of New York policy that kept him off the court for games in Brooklyn. He played 29 games in 2021-22.

“Do they want to be part of this?” Marks said of what he’ll discuss with players this offseason. “Are they motivated by something that’s not good for the whole team? Those are questions we have to ask.”

Marks said he includes himself in the offseason assessments and leadership in general.

“When you finish the season the way we did, it’s with disappointment,” Marks said. “It’s with frustration, and it’s also a time to reflect and look in the mirror and everybody needs to do that from the whole basketball operations department. Same with me as the leader.”

Irving opened up about many topics — random to basketball relevant — in a Twitch stream on Tuesday night. The seven-time All-Star joined the Nets in free agency in 2019 along with Kevin Durant.

While playing the popular “Grand Theft Auto” title, Irving fielded questions and railed against critics.

“Oh my god, Kyrie, he has to be on something,” Irving said. “You know how many comments I see like that? Like, ‘oh my god, he’s definitely on one, man. I don’t know what’s up with him, bro. He’s on drugs, man.’ Shut the (expletive) up. Shut the (expletive) up. Shut up, bro.

“I hear it so often, and that has racist undertones to it. He has to be on drugs. This woke black guy has to be on drugs. Shut the (expletive) up. I haven’t smoked not one thing. I haven’t taken not one drug. That’s the prototypical response that you hear from someone that’s living a life in a shell, that don’t know (expletive) what’s going on.”

In addition to any decision on Simmons, Marks must determine if the Nets will give Irving a five-year extension worth more than $200 million. Irving could instead opt for free agency rather than pick up his player option at $36.9 million for the 2022-23 season.

Danielle Collins downs Simona Halep in straight sets at Rome

Danielle Collins knocked off former World No. 1 Simona Halep, while Petra Martic and Jil Teichmann notched big upsets and top-seeded Iga Swiatek stretched her winning streak to 24 matches on Wednesday during second-round play at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia at Rome.

The seventh-seeded Collins continued her strong season with 38 winners during a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win over Halep.

Collins won 11 of the final 12 points of an 82-minute first set and then won the first four games of the second set en route to the win. The Australian Open finalist saved 9 of 13 break points while advancing to the Round of 16 in Rome for the first time.

“Simona is someone that I’ve looked up to for a long time, somebody that I really admire as a competitor, and as an athlete,” Collins said after the triumph. “I felt like today kind of worked in my favor because I know her game so well from watching a lot.

“I had to come out and play really aggressive and be consistent at the same time, because she’s relentless, she gets everything back. I just had to be really patient. There were times I was a little up and down with my serving, so I kind of made some adjustments, and just tried to be not too hard on myself.”

Halep, who won the Rome title in 2020, had just 12 winners and saved only 3 of 9 break points.

Collins will next face fellow American Amanda Anisimova, who knocked off 12th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Martic, a qualifier from Croatia, is in the Round of 16 for the second straight year after posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. Martic won 68.5 percent of her first-serve points compared to Kontaveit’s 55.6.

Teichmann advanced with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over sixth-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova. Teichmann had some help from Pliskova, who committed 12 double faults.

Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva also scored a solid upset, rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

Meanwhile, Swiatek continued her torrid play with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in just 68 minutes. Swiatek, the defending champion, had a 15-3 edge in winners.

“I’m pretty proud I could get into the rhythm today, just take some lessons during the match and improve my game, game by game,” Swiatek said after the victory. “That was pretty solid match for me.”

Swiatek will next face 16th-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Azarenka defeated Colombia’s Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-4.

Second-seeded Paula Badosa of Spain moved on with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus. Third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus registered a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shuai Zhang of China, while fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece beat Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-2.

Among other matches featuring seeded players, No. 9 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia beat Australia’s Alja Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-2 while 13th-seeded American Jessica Pegula won in a walkover against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.

No. 15 seeded Coco Gauff rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 in over fellow American Madison Brengle.

Bears sign QB Nathan Peterman

The Chicago Bears signed free agent quarterback Nathan Peterman to a one-year contract.

Peterman spent the past two seasons as the third-string quarterback with the Las Vegas Raiders. He appeared in two games, completing three passes for 25 yards.

A fifth-round draft pick in 2017 by the Bills, he played two seasons in Buffalo, where he appeared in eight games with four starts (1-3 record).

In his career, Peterman has completed 71 of 135 pass attempts for 573 yards. He’s thrown for three touchdowns and 12 interceptions — five of them coming in a disastrous start on Nov. 19, 2017, against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In Las Vegas, Peterman played behind Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota. In Chicago, second-year QB Justin Fields is the expected starter with veteran Trevor Siemian signed earlier this offseason to serve as his primary backup.

Report: Naomi Osaka opening agency to build her business

Former World No. 1 tennis player Naomi Osaka has split with her agency, IMG, and will start her own, Sportico reported Wednesday.

The agency will be called Evolve.

Joining Osaka at Evolve is Stuart Duguid, who was a senior vice president at IMG. Sportico said both Duguid and Osaka will hold equity stakes in Evolve with no other outside investors as of the launch.

“I’ve spent my career doing things my way, even when people told me that it wasn’t what was expected or traditional,” Osaka, 24, said, per Sportico. “Evolve is the natural next step in my journey as both an athlete and businesswoman, as well as a way to continue being myself and doing things my way.”

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, ranked No. 12 on Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes in 2021 with $60 million in earnings. All but $5 million came off the court.

Forbes said she is the highest-paid female athlete ever, and Sportico reported she will be the first woman in sports “to take full control of her business endeavors.”

Duguid told Sportico that Evolve won’t be looking to add a trove of athletes. The focus will remain on Osaka and “building Naomi’s business from $50 million a year to $150 million a year,” he said.

Osaka took much of 2021 off to focus on her mental health and has slipped to No. 38 in the rankings because of her lack of tournament appearances.

Her best finish of the season came earlier this month at the Miami Open, where she was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek of Poland.
