Braves C Manny Pina set for season-ending wrist surgery

Atlanta Braves catcher Manny Pina will undergo surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the season.

Pina, 34, has not played since April 24 with what was originally labeled as wrist inflammation.

After signing a two-year, $8 million deal in the offseason, Pina played in just five games for the Braves with two hits in 14 at-bats.

In his ninth season, Pina is a career .243 hitter with 42 home runs and 148 RBIs in 414 games for the Kansas City Royals (2011-12), Milwaukee Brewers (2016-21) and Braves.

Brandon Crawford helps Giants finish sweep of Rockies

Brandon Crawford drove in three runs, two with a fifth-inning home run, Alex Cobb combined with four relievers on a four-hitter, and the San Francisco Giants completed a three-game home sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 7-1 victory Wednesday afternoon.

In a duel of teams that were tied in the standings at the beginning of the week, the Giants used 8-5, 9-2 and 7-1 wins to run their winning streak to five games, effectively soothing the sting of a five-game losing streak that immediately preceded the run of success.

For the third straight day, the Giants never trailed, taking the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning off Rockies starter Chad Kuhl (3-1). Crawford had his first RBI in the inning with an infield out, before Joey Bart added an RBI single and Brandon Belt made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Crawford hit Kuhl’s last pitch for a two-run homer to make it 5-0 in the fifth. His third home run of the season followed a two-out single by Thairo Estrada.

Kuhl was pulled after allowing five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out eight.

Cobb (2-1) went three batters into the sixth, exiting with two on and one out.

He was relieved by Jose Alvarez, who gave up the Rockies’ lone run on Charlie Blackmon’s infield out before escaping further damage with a 5-1 lead.

The Giants completed the game’s scoring in the eighth on an RBI single by LaMonte Wade Jr. and bases-loaded walk drawn on an 11-pitch at-bat by Joc Pederson.

Giants relievers Alvarez, John Brebbia, Tyler Rogers and Jarlin Garcia combined for 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Wade (3-for-4) and Belt (2-for-3) combined for five hits and two RBIs atop the lineup for the Giants, whose only extra-base hit of the game was Crawford’s homer.

Crawford and Estrada scored twice apiece.

The Rockies’ hits — all singles — came in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh innings as they completed a 1-5 trip that began with two losses in three games at Arizona.

Rhys Hoskins’ slam powers Phillies to victory over Mariners

Rhys Hoskins hit a grand slam as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-2 Wednesday afternoon.

Hoskins homered in all three games of the series. He hit solo shots in a 9-0 victory Monday and a 5-4 loss Tuesday.

The Phillies won for just the third time in their past nine games. Seattle suffered its 12th loss in its past 15.

Phillies left-hander Bailey Falter, called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make the second major league start of his career, allowed one run on five hits through 4 2/3 innings but was pulled one out shy of qualifying for the victory. Falter was relieved by Seranthony Dominguez (2-1) after allowing a two-out double to Adam Frazier in the fifth. Falter didn’t walk a batter and struck out four.

Trailing 4-1, the Mariners got a run back in the seventh as Jose Alvarado issued a pair of walks before Ty France grounded a run-scoring single into right field off Jeurys Familia. Rookie Julio Rodriguez flew out to center with runners on the corners to end the threat.

The Phillies’ Corey Knebel got the final four outs for his sixth save of the season.

Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (4-1), who had allowed just five earned runs through his first six starts of the season and was named the American League’s Pitcher of the Month for April, took the loss despite allowing just three hits over five innings and matching a career-high with nine strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0, Hoskins went deep in the fourth. Alec Bohm led off the inning by grounding a single into center field and Bryce Harper walked. Bohm advanced to third as Nick Castellanos flew out to deep right. Harper stole second and Jean Segura walked to load the bases.

On a 2-1 count, Hoskins lined a fastball down the left-field line, the ball just sneaking inside the foul pole to make it 4-1.

The Mariners scored the game’s first run in the third. With one out, Frazier grounded a double to left. An out later, Rodriguez hit a low liner just out of the reach of diving shortstop Bryson Stott for a run-scoring single.

Marlins erupt in eighth to roll past Diamondbacks

Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Avisail Garcia each hit three-run home runs during an eight-run ninth inning as the visiting Miami Marlins avoided a three-game sweep with an 11-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday at Phoenix.

Arizona tied the game at 3-3 on pinch hitter Jordan Luplow’s two-run homer in the eighth inning before Miami sent 12 batters to the plate and pounded out eight runs on eight hits in the ninth.

Joey Wendle also hit a home run for Miami, which snapped a three-game losing skid and won for just the second time in its last 11 games.

Jacob Stallings began the ninth-inning outburst with a two-out, tiebreaking run-scoring single off Mark Melancon (0-4), who then allowed Chisholm’s three-run homer.

J.B. Wendelken replaced Melancon and yielded four-consecutive hits, including an RBI single from Erik Gonzalez and Garcia’s three-run blast to center field.

Alek Thomas hit his first career home run for Arizona, which was out-hit 15-4 and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

Miami starter Sandy Alcantara allowed one run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts over seven innings.

Miami took an early lead in the first on Wendle’s one-out, two-run blast off Merrill Kelly, who had not allowed a homer in his last six starts dating back to last season.

The Marlins added to their lead in the third. Jesus Sanchez drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Bryan De La Cruz’s single, and scored on Stallings’ single.

Kelly, who entered the game with a National League-best 1.22 ERA, allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four.

The D-backs got on the board in the third on Thomas’ one-out solo homer. The rookie outfielder had two hits and is 5-for-13 with three RBIs in his first four games.

Wendle had two hits before exiting with right hamstring tightness for the Marlins, who had lost their first five meetings against the D-backs this season.

Arizona designated hitter Seth Beer singled in the seventh to break an 0-for-37 streak.

Rested White Sox draw surging Yankees in four-game set

The New York Yankees have won 15 of 17 games entering Thursday’s visit to the Chicago White Sox to begin a four-game series.

Wednesday’s 5-3 home victory against Toronto, fueled by a three-run home run and two-run single from Gleyber Torres, again highlighted the Yankees’ versatility, and their ability to rally. It was the team’s MLB-best 10th comeback victory already in 2022.

“It’s been nice that it’s come in a lot of different ways, and I think that’s building a lot of confidence in that room, that we know we don’t have to lean on one thing on a given night,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We have a lot of different ways to beat you.”

The White Sox have won seven of eight and enter off an unexpected rest day. Wednesday’s scheduled matinee against the Cleveland Guardians was postponed due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the Guardians organization.

In addition to offering extra rest time for the bullpen — namely closer Liam Hendriks, who collected five saves in as many appearances to begin May before blowing a save Monday — the postponement also might provide a lift for Leury Garcia. Initially set to start at second base Thursday, Garcia was a late scratch with left ankle soreness.

The White Sox defeated the Guardians 4-1 on Tuesday night as Lucas Giolito pitched seven innings of one-run ball, Tim Anderson had three hits and Gavin Sheets homered for the second straight game. Chicago rebounded after squandering a six-run ninth-inning lead en route to losing 12-9 in 11 innings Monday.

“We’re in a spot where we can self-evaluate very well,” Giolito said. “We didn’t have to say anything, we didn’t have to have a meeting. We didn’t have to have anything after that game.”

Manager Tony La Russa said the defending American League Central division champion White Sox are “hungrier than they were last year. Because they had another taste of it and they want it.”

White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease (3-1, 2.38 ERA) is set to face Yankees righty Luis Gil, who makes his season debut.

Cease is coming off a no-decision at Boston on Saturday, when he scattered one run and four hits in five innings with three walks and eight strikeouts. He is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees with 12 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.

Gil was 1-1 with a 3.07 ERA in six starts last season, with 38 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings. After opening his career with 15 2/3 scoreless innings over three August starts, Gil was spottier down the stretch, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) and four homers in 13 2/3 September innings.

Gil, who hasn’t faced the White Sox, pitched five innings of two-run ball for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, with nine strikeouts and zero walks in an outing at Rochester. He threw 78 pitches.

“The talent is obviously there,” Boone said. “When he came up here last year, he pitched well, as we saw. He pitched in some important games for us. He’s got off to a little bit of a slow start in Triple-A, but he’s coming off a really strong outing, his best outing. And he’s built up a full-starter load. So if we want 100 pitches, he could do that.”

Chicago’s Luis Robert enters on a nine-game hitting streak.

Cardinals call up rookie RHP Jake Walsh

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled rookie right-handed pitcher Jake Walsh from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

To make room on the roster, St. Louis ptioned right-hander Kodi Whitley to Memphis.

The first appearance for Walsh, 26, will be his major league debut. The Cardinals selected him in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

He’ll be joining five other rookies on the roster, including four developed in the Cardinals’ farm system.

In nine games in relief in Memphis this season, Walsh allowed one earned run in 11 innings. He has a 0.82 ERA with six saves and has struck out 16 and walked five batters.

Whitley, 27, is 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 8 2/3 innings of relief over 10 games this season.

Yankees GM offers vague update on Aaron Judge extension talks

The New York Yankees and their star slugger, Aaron Judge, both are enjoying strong starts to the 2022 season, but there is no guarantee the relationship will survive beyond this year.

On Wednesday, general manager Brian Cashman talked about Judge’s contract situation by saying he wouldn’t be talking about it through the media.

“We’re not going to talk about it now going forward,” Cashman said before the Yankees hosted the Toronto Blue Jays. “Whether that means we’re not going to talk, I’m not saying that, but we’re not going to talk about it (publicly). But he’s been great. But that’s no surprise, because he is great.”

Judge, 30, turned down a reported $230.5 million deal to keep him under contract for eight seasons. He is hitting .290 with a .356 on-base percentage through 28 games entering Wednesday and was on top of the home run list in the majors with 10.

The Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 6-5 on Tuesday on Judge’s first career walk-off home run.

The sides could still agree on an extension this season, preventing Judge from entering free agency.

As his Opening Day deadline for an extension arrived, Judge expressed displeasure at the contract terms being made public, but Cashman downplayed that issue on Wednesday.

“I’m not aware of any of that,” Cashman said. “His camp knew all about it, so I assume he knew all about it. It certainly doesn’t feel like (he’s upset) when I’ve interacted with him since.”

Judge, who played in career game No. 600 on Tuesday, is in his seventh season — all with the Yankees. He had 168 home runs, 388 RBIs, 26 stolen bases and a career average of .277 entering Wednesday’s game.

A 2013 first-round pick of the Yankees out of Fresno State, Judge was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2017 and is a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award winner.

Pirates call up LHP Cam Alldred, option RHP Beau Sulser

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned right-handed reliever Beau Sulser to Triple-A Indianapolis and selected the contract of left-hander Cam Alldred on Wednesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Alldred, catcher Roberto Perez will be transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Sulser, 28, appeared in four games, recording a 3.72 ERA without a decision. He gave up four runs on four hits in four innings Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He walked one and struck out four. He made his major league debut on April 26.

Alldred, 25, is 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA in eight games (one start) at Indianapolis with an 0.849 WHIP. Alldred’s first appearance will be his major league debut.

Multiple Guardians positive for COVID-19, game postponed

One hour after Cleveland Guardians manager Terry Francona’s positive COVID-19 test was revealed on Wednesday, the team’s matinee at the Chicago White Sox was postponed due to “multiple positive tests” within the organization.

The game is the first in Major League Baseball this season postponed due to COVID-19.

“Following multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the Cleveland Guardians organization, their afternoon road game today vs. the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field has been postponed to allow for continued testing and contact tracing,” MLB said in a statement.

Thursday is a scheduled off day for Cleveland before the start of a three-game series in Minnesota against the Twins.

Bench coach DeMarlo Hale was slated to replace Francona for the afternoon game in Chicago before the postponement.

Francona’s positive test was the first for the Guardians since three players went on the COVID-related injured list on April 20 (pitcher Cal Quantrill, infielder Owen Miller and pitcher Anthony Castro).

Hale, a Chicago native, rejoined Francona last season after stints with the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles since assisting Francona with the Boston Red Sox. Hale subbed for Francona in 2021 when the manager took a long leave of absence for health-related reasons.

Reds hold on for wild 14-11 win over Brewers

Tyler Stephenson doubled twice in the first two innings and drove in four runs to power the Cincinnati Reds past the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 14-11 Wednesday afternoon.

Christian Yelich became the fifth player since 1900 with three career cycles when he tripled in Milwaukee’s six-run ninth. All three have been at the expense of the Reds. Hunter Renfroe also homered twice for the Brewers, who fell to 2-4 on their current nine-game road trip.

Trailing 14-5 entering the ninth, the NL Central-leading Brewers fell short of the biggest comeback in franchise history.

The rubber-game win gave Cincinnati its second straight series win after going winless in its first eight of the season.

Colin Moran homered for the fourth time in four games and drove in three while Tyler Naquin went 2-for-4 and also had three RBIs for the Reds, who received a much-needed cushion with a six-run eighth.

Brewers starter and loser Adrian Houser (3-3) was victimized by shoddy fielding in the first inning as the Reds raced out to a 3-0 lead.

Brewers third baseman Luis Urias backed up on a routine Tommy Pham grounder and allowed the ball to pass under his belt-high glove for an error, putting runners at first and second.

With two outs, Stephenson doubled home T.J. Friedl to put the Reds up 1-0. Following a Moran walk, center fielder Lorenzo Cain and Renfroe, the right fielder, watched Naquin’s fly ball fall on the warning track for a three-run triple. The misplay gave Cincinnati a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Houser walked a pair of batters after Friedl’s one-out bunt single in the second. The Reds took full advantage as Stephenson’s second double cleared the bases with two outs, putting Cincinnati ahead 7-0.

Houser was pulled after four innings, allowing seven runs – three earned – on six hits, striking out three and walking four.

Reds starter Vladimir Gutierrez appeared in line for his first win after five losses in as many starts to open 2022. But after Yelich’s two-out single put runners at first and third in the fifth inning, the right-hander was pulled for Alexis Diaz (1-0), who hit Rowdy Tellez before striking out Urias to end the rally.

Gutierrez, who fell one out shy of qualifying for the win, was tagged for four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

Diaz, the brother of New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz, earned his first career win, striking out two and walking one in 1 1/3 innings.
