Padres activate Wil Myers, Luke Voit from IL

The San Diego Padres activated outfielder Wil Myers and designated hitter Luke Voit from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday’s game against the visiting Chicago Cubs.

San Diego also optioned top-flight shortstop prospect C.J. Abrams to Triple-A El Paso and designated journeyman outfielder Trayce Thompson for assignment.

Both Myers and Voit are in Tuesday night’s starting lineup.

Myers, 31, hasn’t played since April 26 due to a thumb injury. He is batting .218 with seven RBIs in 15 games.

Voit, 31, last played on April 22. He is batting .143 with just one extra-base hit (a double) and five RBIs in 13 games.

The Padres had Abrams open the season in the majors, despite having no Triple-A experience, due to an injury to star shortstop Fernando Tatis (wrist). But the 21-year-old never found his stride and hit .182 with one home run and four RBIs in 20 games.

The writing was on the wall for Abrams when the Padres claimed infielder Sergio Alcantara off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.

Thompson, 31, batted just .071 (1-for-14) with seven strikeouts in six games. He had nine homers for El Paso before joining the Padres.

Rangers C Mitch Garver headed to 10-day IL

Texas Rangers catcher Mitch Garver is heading to the 10-day injured list because of a sprained flexor tendon.

Garver has not played since Sunday because of the injury. The 31-year-old is in his first season with the Rangers after spending the previous five seasons with the Minnesota Twins.

In 22 games this season, Garver is hitting .205 with three homers and eight RBIs. He has thrown out two of 12 runners from behind the plate.

To take Garver’s spot on the roster, the Rangers recalled catcher Sam Huff from Triple-A Round Rock. Huff has appeared in 11 career games with the Rangers, hitting .353 (12-for-34) with three homers and five RBIs.

Details emerge in death of ex-Michigan State star Adreian Payne

The man accused of killing former Michigan State basketball star Adreian Payne entered a not guilty plea Tuesday morning in a Florida courtroom.

Lawrence Dority, 29, was charged with first-degree murder with a firearm following the shooting death early Monday morning of Payne in Orlando, Fla.

The Detroit Free Press on Tuesday reported more details about the killing of Payne, 31.

According to the newspaper, Payne and his girlfriend went to Dority’s home at the request of a female friend, Tatiana Mesa, who was in an allegedly abusive relationship with Dority.

Payne’s girlfriend, whose name was redacted in court documents, told authorities that she previously had intervened in arguments between Dority and Mesa as a mediator.

The Free Press reported that a court affidavit indicated Dority was dropped off at his home by his father and spotted a car, which the younger Dority approached. Payne and his girlfriend were sitting in the car. At some point, Dority went into his house to retrieve a gun.

According to court records, Dority told police he felt threatened by Payne and that that Payne was “making movements with his right hand in the right side of his waist band” and that he “observed the ‘shape of a gun’ on the right side of his shirt.” Payne was shot when he got out of the car.

The Free Press said Payne was not armed. A witness also told police that Payne wasn’t threatening Dority, per the report.

Dority called 911 from the house and admitted he shot Payne because he “tried shooting me. … He act like he got a gun, and I shot him,” the Free Press reported.

In the affidavit, Dority told deputies Payne was “getting in his face and was intimidating due to his size.” He added he believed the shooting was justified.

Payne averaged 8.9 points and 5.3 rebounds in 138 games (94 starts) from 2010-14 for the Spartans and coach Tom Izzo.

The 6-foot-10 Payne was selected No. 15 overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA Draft and averaged 4.0 points in 107 career games (24 starts) with the Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic. He also played overseas as recently as February.

Twins put Carlos Correa, Chris Paddack on IL

The Minnesota Twins put All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa (finger) and right-hander Chris Paddack (elbow inflammation) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

In corresponding moves, the Twins selected the contracts of outfielder Mark Contreras and right-hander Jharel Cotton from Triple-A Saint Paul.

Correa’s stint is retroactive to Friday. He suffered a right middle finger contusion Thursday after a fouling a ball off his hand in the seventh inning against Baltimore.

Correa, 27, was starting to heat up, batting .412 with three doubles, one home run and eight RBIs in eight games leading up to the injury. For the season, he’s hitting .255 with two HRs and 11 RBIs.

Paddack, 26, left his start Sunday in the third inning against Oakland. He is 1-2 with a 4.03 ERA and 20 strikeouts in five starts for the Twins. His IL stint is retroactive to Monday.

Cotton, 30, made the Opening Day roster and pitched in two games for the Twins, with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings. He did not record a decision or post an ERA. He is 13-10 with a 4.66 ERA in 54 games (29 starts) for Oakland, Texas and the Twins in parts of four major league seasons.

Contreras, 27, is batting .239 with five doubles, one triple, five home runs and 17 RBIs in 26 games for the Saints this season. His first appearance would make his MLB debut.

Grizzlies star PG Ja Morant (knee) likely done for postseason

Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right knee and is unlikely to play again this postseason, the team said Tuesday.

The Grizzlies said Morant is “doubtful for the remainder of the postseason but is expected to make a full recovery.”

Memphis’ season could be over as soon as Wednesday night. The Grizzlies face a 3-1 deficit to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference second-round series.

Morant was injured during Game 3 of the season and sat out Monday night when the Grizzlies let a 12-point, fourth-quarter lead get away in a 101-98 road loss.

Morant averaged 38.3 points, 8.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds in the series. He scored 47 points in Game 2 and 34 in Games 1 and 3.

The 22-year-old Morant averaged 27.4 points, 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 57 regular-season games. He made the All-Star team for the first time in his three-year career. He was NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2019-20 season.

Cardinals option SS Paul DeJong to Triple A

The St. Louis Cardinals demoted struggling starting shortstop Paul DeJong to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Tommy Edman is expected to become the starting shortstop in the interim.

In a corresponding move, the Cardinals selected the contract of infielder Kramer Robertson.

DeJong, 28, is batting just .130 with a homer and seven RBIs in 24 games. He has a paltry .417 OPS. DeJong tore it up in spring training, batting .435 with a 1.362 OPS in 11 games.

DeJong is a career .237 hitter. He made the National League All-Star team in 2019 when he slugged a career-best 30 home runs.

The Cardinals signed DeJong to a six-year, $26 million extension in March 2018, including club options for 2024 and ’25.

Robertson, 27, was batting .225 in 23 games for Memphis this season. He has three homers and six stolen bases. His first appearance with the Cardinals will mark his major league debut.

Robertson was a fourth-round pick out of LSU in 2017. He is the son of Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, the former Baylor legend who now guides LSU’s program.

Celtics, Bucks looking for steady production from reserves

The Milwaukee Bucks and host Boston Celtics will be looking for consistency from their supporting cast when they battle in a tie-breaking Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series Wednesday night.

Al Horford exploded for a postseason career-high 30 points and Marcus Smart hit two clutch shots down the stretch as the Celtics evened the best-of-seven series 2-2 with a come-from-behind, 116-108 win at Milwaukee on Monday.

The teams have alternated wins and losses in the first four games, with each winning once on the opponents’ home floor.

The Bucks opened the series with a 101-89 win at Boston in a game in which Bobby Portis (15) and Grayson Allen combined for 26 points. Meanwhile, the Celtics didn’t get more than 12 points from anyone other than Jayson Tatum, who had 21.

But things changed in Game 2, when Grant Williams bombed in six 3-pointers off the Boston bench in a difference-making performance in a 109-86 triumph. This time, it was the Bucks’ supporting cast that struggled, with Pat Connaughton accounting for 13 of their mere 20 bench points.

As usual, Giannis Antetokounmpo (42 points in Game 3) and Tatum (30 in Game 4) were driving forces in wins for their respective clubs in Milwaukee, but again, their teams were only as successful as their supporting casts.

Brook Lopez, Connaughton and Portis combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds in Milwaukee’s 103-101 win in Game 3, before Horford stole the show for the Celtics in Game 4.

In an effort to find help for Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday, Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer has given Portis and Allen each two starts in the series. Portis scored 15 and 13 points in his starts, while Allen went scoreless in Game 3 before a seven-point outing Monday.

If there’s going to be another change for Game 5, the Gregg Popovich disciple promised nobody other than his team would know about it until they were required by league rules to be informed.

“I’ve come up with a new policy: I’m not going to comment on my starting lineup to the media … ever,” Budenholzer said Monday. “(The Celtics will) find out 30 (minutes before game time); you’ll find out at 30.

“I just have no comment on my starting lineup for the rest of my coaching career. Bam.”

While injured Khris Middleton remains out of the Milwaukee lineup, the Celtics would like to get center Robert Williams back for Game 5. He appears headed for a game-time decision after having his surgically repaired left knee act up on him leading into Game 4.

As it turned out, no Williams meant more minutes for Horford, who turned back the clock not only to play 42 minutes but also with a postseason career-best five 3-pointers in seven attempts.

Horford admitted his inspiration came from the two-point loss two days earlier.

“We felt that at the end of Game 3 that we were in a position to win the game and we didn’t,” he said. “I was just really locked in (for Game 4). I understood the moment and what we needed to do as a group. Just come out and we were gonna do whatever it took. It was one of those types of nights.”

Tarik Skubal leads Tigers to shutout of Athletics

Tarik Skubal tossed seven scoreless innings, Jeimer Candelario hit a three-run double and the Detroit Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak by defeating the Oakland Athletics 6-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Though the game was played at Detroit’s Comerica Park, the Tigers batted first. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Oakland during the first week of the season.

Skubal (2-2) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five. Candelario had three hits for the first time this season.

Jonathan Schoop had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice for Detroit, which had been blanked in its previous two games. Willi Castro added three hits and scored a run as the Tigers rapped 12 hits after managing just five combined in their last two outings.

Joe Jimenez and Drew Hutchison finished off the shutout, with each contributing an inning of scoreless relief.

Starter Frankie Montas (2-3) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings for Oakland, which snapped a nine-game losing streak by winning the series opener on Monday.

Skubal got into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth when he issued two two-out walks. He escaped that jam by retiring Kevin Smith on a fly ball.

The Tigers ended a 28-inning scoreless streak in the next inning. Schoop walked and Castro slapped a soft single. A bunt single by Tucker Barnhart loaded the bases.

Derek Hill ended Detroit’s drought with a sacrifice fly to bring home Schoop. Robbie Grossman then hit into a fielder’s choice as Castro scored.

Schoop made it 3-0 in the sixth with his second home run of the season, a two-out blast to left.

Detroit doubled its lead in the seventh. Montas was removed after walking Grossman with one out. Kirby Snead replaced him and gave up back-to-back singles to Austin Meadows and Javier Baez. Candelario then unloaded the bases when he drove a 3-2 offering into the left-center gap.

The teams were playing the second game of a five-game series.

Canadiens win draft lottery for No. 1 overall pick

The Montreal Canadiens won the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2022 NHL Draft in Tuesday night’s draft lottery.

The Canadiens, who finished with a league-low 55 points (22-49-11), had the best odds of landing the No. 1 pick at 18.5 percent.

Montreal will host the draft on July 7-8 at the Bell Centre, marking the first time since 1985 that the team hosting the draft (Toronto) also held the No. 1 pick.

The Arizona Coyotes, Seattle Kraken and Philadelphia Flyers round out the top five.
