Balanced-scoring Grizzlies demolish Warriors to stay alive

Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Tyus Jones each scored 21 points and sank four 3-pointers as the host Memphis Grizzlies steamrolled the Golden State Warriors 134-95 in Wednesday night’s Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Grizzlies had little trouble cutting Golden State’s series lead to 3-2 despite playing without star point guard Ja Morant for the second straight game. Morant has a bone bruise in his right knee and is doubtful to play again this postseason.

Steven Adams collected 13 rebounds, Jones compiled nine assists and Jackson grabbed eight boards for second-seeded Memphis, which led by as many as 55 points. The 39-point margin of victory is the Grizzlies’ largest in postseason play, topping a 124-96 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this postseason.

Klay Thompson scored 19 points, Jonathan Kuminga had 17 and Stephen Curry added 14 for the third-seeded Warriors. No Golden State player saw more than 26 minutes of action.

Golden State committed 22 turnovers while the Grizzlies had 10. Memphis made a franchise playoff record 18 3-pointers (out of 41 attempts).

The Grizzlies shot 47.5 percent overall. Dillon Brooks contributed 12 points.

Game 6 is Friday night in San Francisco.

Memphis led 77-50 at halftime and then poured it on by outscoring Golden State 42-17 in the third quarter.

Jones and Jackson connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 14-0 burst and make it 103-56.

The lead went over 50 when Ziaire Williams drilled a 3-pointer to push the gap to 113-61 with 3:20 remaining in the third.

A four-point play by Williams increased the lead to 55 with 40 seconds left in the third period. The Grizzlies held a 119-67 lead entering the final stanza, and both teams played reserves over the final 12 minutes.

Warriors forward Otto Porter Jr. missed the second half due to right foot soreness. Golden State shot 45 percent from the field and made 14 of 39 from 3-point range.

Golden State trailed 29-28 after Thompson’s trey with 1:21 left in the first quarter before the Memphis onslaught kicked into high gear.

The Grizzlies scored the next 11 points to lead by 12 after Kyle Anderson’s basket 37 seconds into the second quarter. Memphis used a 9-0 run to increase its lead to 53-36 and later tallied 14 straight to raise the margin to 25 with 1:49 left.

Jones’ basket made it 77-50 entering the break.

The 77 points were the most the Warriors allowed in the first half of a postseason game since the Cleveland Cavaliers scored 86 in Game 4 of the 2017 NBA Finals. Cleveland won that game, 137-116.

Rangers rally to beat Penguins, stay alive

Filip Chytil scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period on the power play and the New York Rangers rallied from a 2-0 second-period deficit to stave off playoff elimination with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

Jacob Trouba and Alexis Lafreniere each had a goal and an assist and Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren also scored goals for New York, which still trails the best-of-seven first round Eastern Conference series, 3-2. Game 6 is Friday night in Pittsburgh. Vezina finalist Igor Shesterkin stopped 29 of 32 shots.

It was the first career playoff goal for Chytil, who was the 21st overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Rangers.

Jake Guentzel scored two goals and Kris Letang also scored for Pittsburgh, which lost star center Sidney Crosby midway through the second period to an undisclosed injury following a hard hit to the head by Trouba. Evgeni Malkin added two assists and Louis Domingue finished with 29 saves.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Guentzel backhanded in a rebound of his own shot off the skate of Shesterkin from behind the net to extend his goal-scoring streak to five games.

Letang made it 2-0 at the 7:58 mark of the second period when he one-timed a Malkin crossing pass from the left circle under Shesterkin’s blocker for his first goal of the playoffs.

But New York rallied to take a 3-2 lead later in the period scoring three goals in the span of 2:42.

Fox started the comeback with his third goal of the playoffs, snapping a shot from the top of the right circle past a Ryan Strome screen and under the crossbar. Lafreniere tied it 90 seconds later, converting a Kaapo Kakko pass from the slot for his second goal of the playoffs. Trouba then gave the Rangers the lead 72 seconds after that when he rushed the net and beat Domingue with a backhand shot from the slot.

But the Penguins answered just 13 seconds later to tie it on Guentzel’s second goal of the game off a Malkin setup.

Chytil then made it 4-3 at the 2:53 mark of the third period with a power-play goal, firing a spinning wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle past Domingue’s blocker side for what proved to be the game-winner. Lindgren sealed the win with an empty-netter with 15.5 seconds to go.

Bucks erase fourth-quarter deficit, stun Celtics

Bobby Portis turned a missed Giannis Antetokounmpo free throw into a go-ahead hoop, Jrue Holiday made two critical defensive plays in the final 8.1 seconds and the visiting Milwaukee Bucks rallied past the Boston Celtics 110-107 on Wednesday night for a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series.

Antetokounmpo finished with a game-high 40 points, including a 3-pointer during Milwaukee’s late comeback, to put the Bucks one win away from their third trip to the Eastern Conference finals in the past four seasons.

Game 6 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Friday night at Milwaukee.

Portis’ game-winning basket came after Antetokounmpo got Milwaukee within 107-106 by making the first of two free throws with 14.2 seconds left, then missed the second.

Two Celtics fought over the rebound in a crowd, and when the ball deflected to Portis under the hoop, he converted a layup that gave the Bucks the lead for good.

Marcus Smart attempted to counter immediately for the Celtics, but Holiday blocked his driving attempt with 8.1 seconds left and threw the ball off Smart and out of bounds, giving the Bucks possession with 6.6 seconds to go.

The Celtics were then forced to foul Pat Connaughton, and his two free throws with 5.9 seconds left completed the scoring.

Without a timeout available, the Celtics had to try to rush the ball up the court for a potential game-tying 3-pointer, but Holiday stripped Smart near midcourt and ran out the clock on Milwaukee’s second win at Boston in the series.

Boston’s Jaylen Brown scored 16 of his 26 points in the third quarter, when the Celtics appeared to take control of the game. The hosts were up by nine points after three periods and by as many as 14 early in the fourth.

The Bucks chipped away, eventually drawing even at 105-all with 42.4 seconds remaining after Antetokounmpo and Holiday buried 3-pointers.

Jayson Tatum capped a team-high, 34-point game by sinking two free throws with 31.1 seconds left to put Boston back up by two, setting up the wild finishing sequence.

Antetokounmpo completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Portis led all rebounders with 15 off the bench and contributed 14 points.

Holiday finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and a game-high eight assists, and Connaughton had 13 points for the Bucks, who outscored the Celtics 39-30 on 3-point attempts. Holiday had four of Milwaukee’s 13 treys.

Smart (15 points) and Daniel Theis (11) backed Tatum and Brown for the Celtics.

Team Handlez’s stunning run against NBA 2K League opposition finally ended on Monday, as Wizards District Gaming beat the community team 3-2 in the round of 16 at the Slam Open.

Bracket play in the $150,000 tournament began Wednesday at the NBA 2K League Studio in Indianapolis.

The Wizards and Handlez alternated wins throughout their best-of-five series, with the Wizards prevailing 22-20 in the decisive fifth game. Team Handlez had gone 6-0 in group play, the only team to reach bracket play undefeated.

Up next for the Wizards is a quarterfinal matchup against Hornets Venom GT, who took the final game 22-16 to edge 76ers GC 3-2.

Another quarterfinal will feature Pacers Gaming, a 3-0 winner over T-Wolves Gaming, and DUX Infinitos, a 3-0 victor over Pistons GT.

The other four round-of-16 matches are scheduled for Thursday:

–Cavs Legion GC vs. Blazer5 Gaming

–Grizz Gaming vs. Celtics Crossover Gaming

The 32-team Slam Open field included all 24 NBA 2K League squads plus eight other teams: amateur trios that advanced through qualifying plus “community” teams featuring 2K social-media influencers.

For remote group play, the field was divided into eight groups that each consist of three NBA 2K League teams and one amateur or community team. The top two teams in each group advanced to bracket play, which began Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

The round of 16 features best-of-five matches, while the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be best-of-seven. The winning team will receive $60,000.

The NBA 2K League season will run through August, with the focus on tournament play and qualifying events for tournaments. The traditional five-on-five tournaments are The Tipoff (season opener), The Turn (midseason) and The Ticket (late season).

The league is also adding a trio of three-on-three tournaments that will lead up to a three-on-three championship featuring a separate prize pool.

Globus Medical Reports Q1 Miss, In-Line Guidance

0

Globus Medical, Inc. (NYSE:GMED) reported its Q1 results, with EPS of $0.42 coming in worse than the consensus estimate of $0.47. Revenue was $230.5 million, compared to the consensus estimate of $234.17 million.
The EPS miss was driven by lower sales and weaker-than-expected margins. The company saw softness in Q1 mostly due to capital, but the pipeline has strengthened throughout Q2. The company posted its highest monthly U.S. spine sales in March and highest average daily sales in April.
The company reaffirmed its 2022 guidance as it builds out its product portfolio (NPIs in spine, trauma, imaging), drives robotic pull-through and continues record rep recruitment. For the full 2022-year, the company expects EPS of $2.10, compared to the consensus of $2.10, and revenue of $1.03 billion, compared to the consensus of $1.03 billion.

Electronic Arts Shares Down 8% Following Q4 Results

0

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) shares rose around 8% on Wednesday following the company’s reported Q4 results, with EPS of $0.80 coming in worse than the consensus estimate of $1.44.
Net bookings were $1.75 billion, compared to the consensus estimate of $1.78 billion. Total net bookings grew 18% year-over-year driven by 43% growth in full game sales and 14% growth in live services. Net bookings from Mobile platforms were up 66% year-over-year due to acquired mobile studios. Live services net bookings were 88% of total digital in Q4/22, down from 89% in Q4/21.
Looking ahead, management points to higher taxes and higher costs associated with initial mobile game launches in the 2023 outlook, which explains why profit guidance fell below consensus. Overall, the 2023 launch slate is relatively lean and without contribution from Battlefield Mobile.
Analysts at Oppenheimer continue to expect net bookings/earnings growth to accelerate in the 24 months, but with more conservative margin assumptions due to the unfavorable near-term macro setup. The analysts lowered their price target on the company’s shares to $160 from $170, while maintaining outperform rating.
