Riot reveals locations for two upcoming tournaments

0

Riot announced the locations Friday for the next two international events on the 2022 Valorant Champions Tour.

VCT Masters Two will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from July 10-24.

The end-of-year Champions final will be in Istanbul from Sept. 2-18.

“Our goal is to see our biggest international events played in front of a live audience and both of these cities provided clear pathways towards this goal, while also providing the best possible guarantee that all qualified teams will be able to safely attend and compete,” Riot said in a news release. “We’re excited to share the initial details of these two events and will be providing more information in the coming weeks.”

Twelve teams will compete at VCT Masters Two and 16 teams will battle at Champions.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby ruled out for Game 6

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will not play in Friday’s Game 6 against the visiting New York Rangers, coach Mike Sullivan confirmed.

Crosby, who absorbed a high, hard hit from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba in Game 5 on Wednesday, did not participate in Pittsburgh’s morning skate Friday. Crosby did skate with skills coach Ty Hennes.

Sullivan also ruled out goaltender Tristan Jarry and defenseman Brian Dumoulin, while forward Rickard Rakell is a game-time decision.

The Penguins have a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Game 7, if necessary, would be on Sunday in New York.

Crosby, 34, did not return to the game after the second-period hit from Trouba, who was not penalized on the play or disciplined by the league. The Rangers stayed alive in the series with a 5-3 home victory.

Crosby has two goals and seven assists in the series. In the regular season, the three-time Stanley Cup champion had 31 goals and 53 assists in 69 games.

Jarry has not played since breaking a bone in his foot on April 14. He resumed on-ice workouts last weekend.

Dumoulin (undisclosed) and Rakell (head) have not played since Game 1, a 4-3 victory by the Penguins in triple-overtime on May 3.

Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy released from jail

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was released on a personal recognizance bond Friday after an appearance in Arapahoe County (Colo.) Court.

He was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic violence enhancer, a misdemeanor. He was held overnight in the county jail.

Jeudy didn’t enter a plea during his court appearance, during which he wore an orange jail jumpsuit and was shackled, 9News in Denver reported. He is due back in court on May 31.

While a mandatory protection order remains in place, Judge Chantel Contiguglia dropped the no-contact portion of the order, saying “there was not probable cause to believe that there was the threat or use of any physical force against the victim,” ESPN reported.

9News reported Thursday night that Jeudy admitted to taking a wallet and baby formula belonging to the mother of his child after she took one of his phones. He locked the items in his car, according to the report

The television station said the woman told the judge she called 911 only to have police “monitor” the situation and not to have him arrested. She said she does not feel threatened by Jeudy.

Jeudy, 23, has played two seasons with the Broncos since they selected him in the first round (15th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He played in 10 games (five starts) last season while dealing with a high ankle sprain and a stint on the COVID-19 list.

Warriors hefty favorites to polish off Grizzlies in Game 6

The Memphis Grizzlies may have the momentum, but the Golden State Warriors have history on their side when the Western Conference semifinals continue Friday night with Game 6 in San Francisco.

Facing elimination in the best-of-seven Wednesday and lining up without leading scorer Ja Morant, the Grizzlies dominated Golden State on both ends of the court in a historically lopsided 134-95 home win in Game 5.

A second straight Grizzlies win would send the series back to Memphis for Game 7, an advantage the second-seeded club earned by finishing three games ahead of the third-seeded Warriors in the regular season.

But Golden State’s 117-116 win at Memphis in Game 1 flipped the home-court edge in the series to the Warriors, giving the recent three-time NBA champions the inside track to earning a berth in the Western Finals for the sixth time in eight seasons.

“We’ve shown we’re a resilient team this year,” Golden State star Stephen Curry insisted after the Game 5 blowout, the largest in the postseason for the club since 2014. “We have the right mindset, the right approach, and all the tools we need to show who we really are in Game 6.”

The Grizzlies have been well-backed as 8.5-point underdogs at BetMGM, where they have drawn 71 percent of the spread bets and 74 percent of the handle. The 8.0-point line at DraftKings has drawn split action, with the Warriors backed by 52 percent of the bets while the Grizzlies have been supported by a whopping 89 percent of the handle.

The Warriors are expected to still be without coach Steve Kerr, who tested positive for COVID-19 before Game 4. Longtime assistant coach Mike Brown directed the Warriors in in Game 4 and Game 5. Brown has been named as head coach of the Sacramento Kings, effective after the season.

At home, the Warriors have been unbeatable during the playoffs. They won three home games in a row by an average of 13.3 points over the Denver Nuggets in Round 1 and crushed the Grizzlies 142-112 in San Francisco in Game 3 of this series as the visitors watched Morant go down with a knee injury.

But Memphis, as it has done all season, has responded well to seeing its star in street clothes on the sidelines. The Grizzlies were without Morant for 25 games in the regular season, winning 20 of them. And in Game 4 they led for almost 46 of the 48 minutes despite shooting poorly (41.7 percent overall, 25.7 percent on 3-pointers) but the Warriors escaped with a 101-98 decision.

Then in Game 5, the Grizzlies’ shots fell at a rate of 47.5 percent, including 43.9 percent on 3-point shots, and they buried the Warriors early. Memphis led by 10 after the first, 27 after the second, and 52 points after the third quarter. The lead topped out at 55.

The Warriors had averaged 119 points in their first eight playoff games, but they have averaged just 98 over the last two.

Since their championship run began in 2015, the Warriors have won six of eight Game 6s, including a 108-95 win at Memphis that ended their second-round series seven years ago.

That’s ancient history to the Grizzlies, who began the season as the third-youngest team in the NBA. Morant and many of their other players were still in high school in 2015.

One of those guys, 22-year-old Jaren Jackson Jr., is the key to the Grizzlies’ chances in Game 6, teammate Dillon Brooks insists.

“They got no one to guard him, no one to stop him,” Brooks claimed. “I try to tell him to stay aggressive, and you’re a walking mismatch out there for every single player that guards you. So just keep attacking.”

Jackson has topped 20 points three times in the series, including a pair of 21-point efforts since Morant left the lineup.

The Warriors hope to counter with defensive ace Draymond Green, a fellow Michigan State alum, albeit a decade earlier.

“It doesn’t feel good losing by as much as we did,” Warriors veteran Klay Thompson admitted after Wednesday’s loss. “But it’s just a loss. You flush it and you remind yourself who you are.

“We’re going to play with a 100-percent effort (in Game 6). I like our chances.”

The 218.5-point Over/Under at DraftKings falls smack in the middle of where the market opened at BetMGM (219.5) and where it stood as of Friday afternoon (217.5). The Over has drawn 72 percent of the bets and 57 percent of the spread at DraftKings while the Under has been backed by 53 and 68 percent of the action, respectively at BetMGM.

Union, Red Bulls square off in East showdown

0

The Philadelphia Union will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four when they host the rival New York Red Bulls on Saturday in Chester, Pa.

The Union (5-1-4, 19 points) have recorded three consecutive draws against CF Montreal, Nashville SC and Los Angeles FC. Philadelphia tied LAFC 2-2 in an electric, up-tempo game last Saturday.

After a major test on the road, the Union will now attempt to halt the Red Bulls’ stunning stretch of five straight road wins to open a season. No team in league history has ever won six in a row on the road to start a season.

“While it is early still, it’s still a game that has a lot of meaning for both clubs,” Union head coach Jim Curtin said. “It’s a big test for us and one that we look forward to. And it will be good to get back in our home stadium. We need our fans at their absolute maximum helping cheer us on.”

The Union and Red Bulls lead the Eastern Conference with only eight goals allowed apiece.

Realizing that five of the last six meetings between these two teams have been decided by one goal or less, defense will be vital.

“There is still beauty in defending,” Curtin said.

The Red Bulls will look to push their unbeaten stretch to five straight when they visit the Union. They are 2-0-2 during the stretch.

New York (5-2-3, 18 points) played to a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers last Saturday.

While the Red Bulls are currently surging, they understand the difficult task of traveling to face the Union. And they’re embracing the challenge.

“We’ve been to places where we’re not the underdog, but we still feel that way,” Red Bulls defender Dru Yearwood said. “And it’s going into someone else’s house and taking three points. I guess we just enjoy doing it and we love it. I think just for us, we play with a bit more freedom. We just don’t have our backs against the wall and we play the way we want to play.”

The Red Bulls will now play in an early season game that could prove to be a measuring stick.

“I think in many directions they have a team with experience, a team with a clear identity and a clear plan,” Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber said of the Union. “And the mix of aggression and intensity makes it for every team in the league very difficult to play against. … We are very excited to go into this game and we know the level Philly is playing at.”

Midfielder Daniel Gazdag leads the Union with five goals.

3-time winner Connor McDavid leads Ted Lindsay Award finalists

Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews and Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi were named the finalists for the 2021-22 Ted Lindsay Award on Thursday.

The award, formerly known as the Lester B. Pearson Award, is presented annually to the most outstanding player in the league as voted by the members of the NHL Players’ Association. The winner will be announced during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

McDavid is a three-time winner of the award (2016-17, 2017-18 and 2020-21), while Matthews was a finalist last season and Josi is a first-time finalist.

McDavid, 25, led the NHL with a career-high 123 points (44 goals, 79 assists) in 80 games this season. The only players to win the award more than three times are Wayne Gretzky (five) and Mario Lemieux (four).

Matthews, 24, posted a career-high 106 points (60 goals, 46 assists) in 73 games. He became the 21st different player in NHL history — first in a decade — to register 60 goals in a season.

Josi, 31, set a franchise record with 96 points (23 goals, 73 assists) in 80 games. He is looking to become the first defenseman since Boston’s Bobby Orr (1974-75) to win the Ted Lindsay Award.

Reports: Texans sign CB Derek Stingley Jr. to $34.7M deal

The Houston Texans signed cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, to a four-year, $34.7 million deal, multiple outlets reported Friday.

He will receive a signing bonus of $22.39 million.

Stingley played collegiately at LSU and was a first-team All-American in 2019 and 2020. He started 25 games at LSU, and the Tigers were 20-5 with him on the field. They were undefeated in 2019 and won the national championship.

In his LSU career, Stingley had 73 tackles (seven for loss), six interceptions and 21 passes defensed.

Bucks slight favorites to close out Celtics in Game 6

The Milwaukee Bucks will get an opportunity on their home floor to close out the second-seeded Boston Celtics when the tightly contested best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series continues Friday night.

The defending NBA champions used last-second heroics from Bobby Portis and Jrue Holiday, on top of a 40-point effort from Giannis Antetokounmpo, to pull out a 110-107 Game 5 win at Boston on Wednesday to take a 3-2 series lead.

With the teams having alternated wins and losses through five games, the scene shifts back to Milwaukee, where the Celtics were last seen evening the series for a second time with a 116-108 victory.

The Bucks are slightly 1.0-point favorites at DraftKings, where they have been backed by 68 percent of the spread bets and 67 percent of the handle. The line has held at 1.5 points at BetMGM with Milwaukee drawing 64 and 62 percent of the action, respectively.

Even in losing three of five games, the Celtics have outscored the Bucks by four points and have averaged a 15.5-point margin of victory. But it’s been third-seeded Milwaukee that’s walked away with two- and three-point triumphs in the series’ two tightest games in Game 3 and 5, respectively.

“Playoffs are all about moments,” said Portis, whose offensive rebound and follow shot with 11 seconds remaining provided the difference-making points in Game 5. “It’s not about how many shots you make. It’s not about how many points you score. It’s about moments. We got a lot of guys on this team that can have moments.”

Most of those moments in Game 5 belonged to Antetokounmpo, whose 27 shots included a critical 3-pointer with 1:40 to go and Milwaukee down by six. He was fouled on what would have been his 28th attempt, setting up the two free throws that later put the Bucks ahead — one that he made and the other that Portis followed in.

The Celtics have run different players at the two-time league MVP, including Grant Williams, Al Horford and Jaylen Brown.

While neither Antetokounmpo nor Brown, who had 26 points Wednesday, appear to have been physically affected by the battle, Williams and Horford showed some wear and tear at the offensive end in Game 5, combining for eight points on 4-for-10 shooting in a total of 71 1/2 minutes.

Without injured big man Robert Williams, who has missed the last two games with swelling in his surgically repaired left knee, the Celtics have been limited in their defensive options against the 6-foot-11 Bucks star. Williams will be a game-time decision for Game 6.

The Celtics blamed only themselves, not Williams’ injury, for their failure to hold onto a 14-point lead on their home court Wednesday.

“We made it tougher on ourselves now,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said after the loss. “It’ll make it sweeter when we bounce back, but we gave up a golden opportunity.”

The visiting team has now won three of the five games in the series. The Bucks realize that home court guarantees nothing in Game 6.

“At the end of the day, can’t get too high, can’t get too low,” Antetokounmpo said. “We were up seven or 10 the previous game. We lost it. They were up. They lost this one.

“It’s great to go back home and feel good about ourselves, but the job is not done.”

The Over/Under line opened at 211.5 points at BetMGM but had moved to 210.5 by Friday with the Under drawing 65 percent of the bets and 78 percent of the handle. The 212.0-point line at DraftKings was slightly higher, leading to the Over drawing 64 and 56 percent of the action, respectively.

New York City FC aim to shut down Crew

0

The past two league champions meet for the first time this season when New York City FC hosts the Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

Columbus (3-3-4, 13 points), the 2020 MLS Cup winner, has a win and two ties in its past three matches after going winless in four straight (0-3-1).

More importantly, the Crew have scored five goals in the past two matches, including a 2-2 tie at New England on May 7, after going four games without a score.

“Credit should all go to the players. They’re the ones inside the lines,” Crew coach Caleb Porter said. “They’re the ones that have to execute form and have a strong mentality. I think we have a great group of guys that — home or away — when we take the field we fight, we work, we have hunger.”

Defending champ New York City (4-3-2, 14 points) had its three-game winning streak end with a scoreless draw vs. Sporting Kansas City last week but looks for a third consecutive shutout in MLS play for the first time since July 2018 when it had four straight.

Not included in the streak is a 3-1 win against Rochester in U.S. Open Cup play on Wednesday.

NYCFC coach Ronny Deila is impressed with the Crew’s adaptability to create chances that led to the draw vs. New England.

“We know them quite well. At the same time, they’ve changed a little bit,” Deila said. “Now they play more 4-3-3. They can still play with a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1, which they have played a little bit. But I know, of course, their style and they know ours.

“It’s two coaches that know each other quite well.”

The Crew expects leading scorer Lucas Zelarayan (four goals) to make his first start since April 16. He injured his right knee on March 20 vs. the New York Red Bulls. He started the next three games, missed one, and then came off the bench in the past two matches.

NYCFC leading scorer Valentin “Taty” Castellanos is slated to return after a one-game absence due to an unspecified lower-body injury. He has scored five goals.

RNG sweep replays, lead Group B at MSI 2022

Royal Never Give Up won a trio of matches on Friday to move to 3-0 — again — on day four of the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational in Busan, South Korea.

RNG defeated Istanbul Wildcats, PSG Talon and RED Canids in matches that were replayed from earlier in the week. RNG already had defeated all three competitors, but due to what was called a discrepancy in the latency of play, RNG’s wins were set aside.

There are only 11 teams instead of 12 competing in the League of Legends tournament because the LCL is not represented due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Royal Never Give Up are competing remotely due to COVID-19 travel restrictions in China.

Istanbul Wildcats had the opposite result of RNG, dropping all three games to its Group B opponents.

PSG went 2-1 on the day with wins against RED Canids and the Wildcats. RED Canids mustered just the one win against the Wildcats.

The teams are competing for a prize pool of at least $250,000 through May 29.

The group stage consists of a double round-robin in Groups A and B and a quadruple round-robin in Group C. All matches are best-of-one with the top two teams in each group advancing. Stage 2 (Rumble) is a double round-robin and all matches are best-of-one with the top four teams advancing. Stage 3 (Knockout) is a single-elimination bracket with all matches best-of-five.

Group play continues Saturday with nine more matches:
Evil Geniuses vs. G2 Esports
Evil Geniuses vs. ORDER
