Kansas has become the 35th U.S. state to legalize sports wagering.
Gov. Laura Kelly signed legislation Thursday that allows both retail and online sports betting in the Sunflower State.
“Legalizing sports betting will bring more revenue to our state and grow our economy,” Kelly said. “This is another mechanism that casinos, restaurants and other entertainment venues can now utilize to attract Kansans to their establishments.”
Casinos can partner with online sportsbooks as well as up to 50 retailers, including restaurants and gas stations, to offer in-person betting.
With a 10 percent tax rate, the state expects to raise at least $10 million per year through sports betting.
The system could be in place by the start of the NFL and college football seasons, although the Topeka Capital-Journal reported that January of 2023 is a more likely target.
AppLovin Corporation (NASDAQ:APP) shares surged more than 34% on Thursday despite Q1 results coming in worse than the consensus estimates. Quarterly EPS came in at ($0.31) and revenue at $625 million, both missing the Street estimates of ($0.08) and $823.37 million, respectively.
The company lowered its 2022 revenue guidance to a range of $3.14-3.44 billion, below the Street estimate of $3.69 billion, while the adjusted EBITDA estimate was raised to $1.20 billion from $1 billion at the midpoint. The raise reflects the ongoing growth of the Software Platform business and expected operating improvements in Apps.
The rapid growth of the Software Platform and the massive reach post-MoPub acquisition give the company confidence that it is still able to do well with less reliance on first-party data from its games. That means the company will not only reduce UA investments into those games, but also consider divesting the first-party game business if that makes financial sense.

Posting on Instagram the daughter of celebrity couple Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne posted a photo of herself holding an ultrasound. She said that she had been “very quiet ” in the past few months and thought that she should share the reason for her silence. She said that she was “over the moon to announce that I am going to be a Mumma.” She said that she could not describe herself being happy. Instead, she could describe herself as “ecstatic.”
Sidney George Wilson also shared a photo of a sonogram. The DJ added several heart emojis and a family emoji below the photo, on his Instagram story. He posted in on May 12, about half an hour after Kelly posted on her Instagram story.
Congratulations and best wishes poured in from family, friends and fans. Her mother Sharon Osbourne reposted the image of the sonogram and wrote that her heart could not be “more full” and that she was “excited to share the beautiful journey ahead” with her daughter.

The baby formula shortage has been rising from weeks and has now caught the attention of Congress. Baby formula stocks have been falling from several weeks not just due to supply chain issues but also due to the closure of a huge factory that makes the formula in the U.S. The recall of formula plus supply chain issues has made baby formula scarce across the nation. Manufacturers say that production is on full capacity, however; the supply is less than the demand.
The House Oversight Committee has written letters to the heads of four baby formula companies requesting documents and details asking for the reasons for the shortage in baby formula. Four companies who make baby formula in the U.S.: Mead Johnson Nutrition, Nestle U.S.A., Perrigo Company and Abbot Nutrition were sent letters by the committee. Abbott Nutrition is the largest manufacturer of baby formula in the nation.
President Biden spoke to major retailers and manufacturers about this issue, on Thursday. The White House also announced that it has taken steps to tackle the crisis with efforts to increase formula production and to stop those who were indulging in price gouging.
Although it is an issue that affects many infants and mothers in the nation, finger pointing has begun with the Republicans blaming the Biden Administration and the FDA, while the Democrats are blaming the factories. There was a huge recall of baby formula from Abbott Nutrition.
Two babies died, earlier this year of rare bacterial infections. Four babies may have fallen sick after consuming the formula. Abbott Nutrition’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan was shut down and certain batches of Similac, Alimentum and Elecare were recalled by the FDA.
A spokesperson of the company said that the rare bacterium Cronobacter sakazakii that was found when the environment was tested during the investigation, was in the non contact areas in the factory. In a recent statement, Abbott Nutrition told news outlets that it was working with the FDA to restart operations at its Michigan facility.
On May 10, the sextuplets of the reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 have turned 18. Most of the alum of the show including mother Kate lead quieter lives but father Jon Gosselin and celebrity daughter Hannah Gosselin took to social media to mark the occasion. She also details the sexual abuse she faced in her teenage and college years as she used to be too drunk to fight off men who sexually assaulted her.

However, in an interview with PEOPLE, the celebrity star revealed shocking details including her addiction to alcohol that began at the age of seven.
She first got drunk on the Jewish holiday of Passover. She said that her parents were unaware of how much Manischewitz wine had drunk that night.
She said that she got through her childhood with alcohol as it was “a huge comfort, a relief in the beginning.” It became a “coping mechanism for her.”
The “Cruel Intentions” star also opened up about the horrific personal trauma that she has experienced and this included suicide attempts as well as multiple sexual assaults.
When she joined college, her abuse of alcohol became so much more that she became vulnerable to predators. She was too drunk too fight off the men who abused her.

However, an incident in 2016 , when she had to leave a Delta flight in a stretcher, changed her habits. Witnesses told TMZ that she started crying and spoke of being abused by a man. She was taken off the flight to a nearby hospital.
The incidents made her realize how close she had been to death. She became sober after this incident. Selma Blair hopes that her memoir will help those who were living with similar burdens. She also said that she wrote it for her son.
On Thursday, Ashley Judd, the younger daughter of celebrity musician Naomi Judd, revealed the cause of her mother’s death in a new interview. She said that the 75-year old county music icon had died due to a self-inflicted wound, using a firearm. Naomi Judd had died on April 30 but the cause was revealed today as the family wished to control the flow of information before the result of an autopsy was released.
Appearing on Good Morning America, Ashley told Diane Sawyer that her mother “used a weapon.” She also said that although the family was uncomfortable sharing the information that she used a firearm, they realized that if they didn’t mention it, someone else would.
She also spoke about the mental illness her mother had suffered from and said that it was “important to be clear and to make the decision between our loved one and the disease.” She called mental illness “real.” She said that the disease lied and it was “savage.”
She also commented on the fact that her mother could not face the disease even up to the time she would have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. She spoke of the regard (in which they held her mother by inducting her into the Country Music Hall of Fame) “couldn’t penetrate into her heart” and she was convinced by her disease to take her own life.
Ashley Judd also spoke of the horrific final day of the music icon Naomi Judd calling it a mixed day. She said that she had visited her mother in Tennessee, as was her habit when she was home.
Naomi Judd asked her, “Will you stay with me?” Ashley replied, “Of course I will”
Ashley went upstairs to tell her mother that her good friend was there at their home. Instead she discovered her mother dead, from a self-inflicted wound with a firearm. Ashley said that she had “both grief and trauma from discovering her.” She encouraged people to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255) if they required help.
The next day after her death, the mother and daughter duo (Naomi and Wynonna Judd) were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wynonna spoke of her heartbreak as well as being blessed. She also said that she would “continue to sing, because that’s what we do.”
On Wednesday, Circuit Court Judge Michael Hanzman was informed that a $997 million settlement had been reached between the plaintiffs and the defendants of the lawsuit that resulted after the collapse of a condo in Surfside, in Miami-Dade County. The class-action lawsuit had been brought by the families of the victims as well as the survivors after the oceanfront 12-storied Champlain Towers South condominium in Florida suddenly collapsed on June 24, 2021, killing almost a hundred people and injuring many.
Harley S. Tropin announced that a $997 million settlement had been reached in a hearing before Judge Hanzman. The settlement is pending final approval. It involves several defendants including insurance companies, developers of a building adjacent to the condo and others.
The developers of the adjacent property Eighty-Seven Park project said that they contributed to the settlement to resolve claims and avoid expensive and inconvenient litigation. They did not admit any liability nor did they recognize the validity of the plaintiffs’ claims.

Judge Hanzman said that he was “shocked” by the result and that thought that it was “fantastic.” He added that it was a recovery that was “far in excess” of what he had anticipated. Earlier in the year, the Miami Circuit Court Judge had approved an $83 million settlement. How and where a settlement would be distributed among the victims’ families and the survivors has been a vexing question from the beginning of the lawsuit and has to be resolved.
In the early hours of June 24, 2021, the 12-story condominium partially collapsed at around 1.15 a.m. Authorities said that approximately 55 units of the 136 units in Champlain Towers were destroyed. Ninety eight victims died. They included young children and the elderly including both long term residents of the buildings as well as tourists who were temporarily residing at the oceanfront property.
The Champlain Towers was built in 1981. It was undergoing county-mandated inspection before it collapsed. Miami-Dade County inspected over 500 buildings after the condo collapse.
Attorney Michael Goldberg is a court-appointed receiver who would oversee the payouts. Judge Hanzman wants the whole settlement to be finalized by June 24, the first anniversary of the condo collapse. He wants the payouts to be made by fall 2022.
On Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg released a demo video that featured its new high end mixed reality headset. He wore the headset which is called Project Cambria as of now and explained some of its features. The headset projected 3D digital images over what is seen in the real world using a “passthrough” feature. Although no date was mentioned, the headset is expected to be released this year.
In the video, Mark Zuckerberg plays with and pets a virtual creature that looks like a rabbit. It also shows a virtual workstation in front of a user who then looks down at a notepad and there’s writing on it. The image quality is clear and the text can be read. A virtual workout instructor demonstrating what looks like yoga poses appears in the same space as the headset’s wearer. The design of the headset is blurred.
Meta’s World Beyond has been built on the company’s Presence Platform. The Presence Platform that was introduced in fall 2021 has been designed such that developers can create mixed-reality experiences. Project Cambria can support full-color passthrough. Its cameras have a higher fidelity, when compared with the Quest headsets currently offered by Meta.
Meta’s World Beyond will also be available for Quest headsets through App Lab. However, these headsets will not be able to offer the full-color experience, as of now. Quest headsets display passthrough in shades of grey with their current sensors.
In an earlier report, Meta had described Project Cambria as “a laptop for the face.” The current Cambria headset that could be renamed in future and would also see more advances in development, in 2024. Two new Quest models will also be released in future.
Meta CTO recently posted on Twitter that a SDK update would be available next week. It would include “the full set of Presence Platform tools powered by machine perception and AI–Passthrough, Spatial Anchors, Scene, Interaction and Voice SDKs, and our recently updated Hand Tracking API.
