Whitecaps try to dig out of West cellar vs. Earthquakes

0

Vancouver Whitecaps coach Vanni Sartini told his players after last Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Toronto FC that they played “like a bunch of mothers.”

Sartini, whose team plays host to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, meant it in a good way on Mother’s Day.

“Mothers care, mothers fight for their kids, they’re tough, and they need to be tough,” Sartini said.

Sartini hopes the Whitecaps (2-6-1, 7 points) will continue with their maternal instincts as they attempt to escape the Western Conference cellar.

Tosaint Ricketts scored the winner against visiting Toronto in the 90th minute. He’s the seventh different player to score for the Whitecaps this season, and no player has scored more than once.

Vancouver goalkeeper Thomas Hasal left in the second half with a finger injury and Sartini said he won’t play Saturday, leaving the net to backup Cody Cropper, who finished off the shutout against Toronto.

The Earthquakes (2-5-3, 9 points) will be looking to snap a four-game road losing streak.

Jeremy Ebobisse has scored a team-high five goals for San Jose and Cristian Espinoza has four goals and four assists.

The Earthquakes defeated visiting Colorado 1-0 last weekend as Nathan scored in the 64th minute. It was San Jose’s second win in three MLS matches since Alex Covelo replaced Matias Almeyda as coach.

“I think the guys have done a great job during the transition. It’s definitely not easy. We owe a lot to Matias (Almeyda) and his staff,” Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski said. “A lot of the way that we pressure and the way that we defend can be credited to them for teaching us over the past three and a half, four years.

“But, with (Alex) Covelo’s system, I think it’s a little more structured, a little more less-is-more approach, I would say. I think this is a good indication of how we’ll play moving forward.”

Florida signs St. Bonaventure transfer Kyle Lofton

Guard Kyle Lofton has left St. Bonaventure and will play his final college basketball season at Florida.

He earned All-Atlantic 10 honors the past three seasons. In four seasons with the Bonnies, he appeared in 116 games (all starts) and scored 1,613 points and had 604 assists.

Lofton, who turns 23 this month, had career averages of 13.9 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game at St. Bonaventure. He averaged 38.1 minutes per game over the past four seasons, which was highest in the nation.

“We are excited to bring Kyle into our program here at Florida,” Florida coach Todd Golden said of the 6-foot-3 guard. “Kyle has experienced a lot of success both from a team and individual standpoint during his time at St. Bonaventure. He’s a proven winner and leader. He makes others around him better and cares only about one thing: winning.”

Lofton, a native of Hillsdale, N.J., helped lead St. Bonaventure to a 23-10 finish last season. The Bonnies lost to Xavier in the NIT semifinals.

Maple Leafs’ playoff hex looms over Game 7 vs. Lightning

The visiting Tampa Bay Lightning and the Toronto Maple Leafs carry contrasting recent playoff histories into Game 7 of their first-round playoff series Saturday night.

The Lightning kept alive their hopes of a third straight Stanley Cup on Thursday when Brayden Point scored at 18:04 of overtime to give them a 4-3 victory in Game 6 at Tampa.

“Game 7s, as they say, flip a coin,” Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. “You never know what’s going to happen. So (Point) gave us a chance with that big goal. It’s about wins this time of the year, and this group has proved that we don’t care how it gets done. We just want to get it done.”

The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are trying to get past the first playoff round for the first time since 2004. They have failed in six attempts since.

Since 2018, the Leafs have lost eight consecutive games in which they had a chance to win a series. They lost Game 7 to the Boston Bruins in 2018; Games 6 and 7 to Boston in 2019; Game 5 in a best-of-five series in 2020 to the Columbus Blue Jackets; Games 5, 6 and 7 to the Montreal Canadiens in 2021; and Thursday’s Game 6 to Tampa Bay.

“We can’t change anything now,” said Auston Matthews, who scored Toronto’s first goal on Thursday. “It’s about this next game and going out there with the purpose and details and competing for 60 minutes or whatever it takes.”

The Lightning scored the first two goals Thursday as they did in losing Game 5 on Tuesday. Toronto took the lead Thursday when John Tavares scored twice within 26 seconds in the final minute of the second period.

Nikita Kucherov’s third-period goal tied the game when two high-sticking calls 16 seconds apart on David Kampf and Alexander Kerfoot gave the Lightning a two-man advantage.

Toronto questioned the call on Kampf when video showed that defenseman Cal Foote took the stick to his shoulder and not to his face.

“In that moment, it’s tough to take,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “But I have the benefit of slow-motion replay, officials don’t, so they’re in a tough position. Certainly, it’s a tough one to take, but that’s the way the game goes.”

The Maple Leafs had opportunities to win, particularly in overtime when they had a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal and created the better scoring chances.

“Loved how we played in overtime,” Keefe said. “We attacked, we had chances, plenty of opportunities to finish it and really gave them nothing until they had the look. They made good on their one look. That’s the difference.”

Lightning coach Jon Cooper noted that Tampa Bay capitalized on its special-teams opportunities, which he considered a theme of the series.

“We (scored) a four-on-four goal, power-play goal, short-handed goal,” Cooper said. “It’s just been the tale of the series for both teams. We just won that war tonight.”

Now one winner-take-all game will decide whether the Maple Leafs will get the proverbial monkey off their backs or if the Lightning will extend their postseason mastery.

“They’re two-time Stanley Cup champions,” Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “They know how to handle these situations. And we’re trying to break through.”

NFL Week 1 lines: No big favorites

Three teams are 6.5-point favorites in opening lines for the 2022 NFL regular season released by sportsbooks with the 18-week game schedule finalized.

The NFL released a full schedule for the regular season on Thursday night, including the opening game of the season in Los Angeles between the Rams and Buffalo Bills. The Super Bowl champion Rams are a 1-point favorite at SoFi Stadium.

The AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals are 6.5-point favorites over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 and no team is a bigger favorite on the early lines.

San Francisco is a 6.5-point favorite at Chicago and the Tennessee Titans are 6.5-point favorites over the New York Giants.

The primetime games in Week 1 include Russell Wilson returning to Seattle with the Denver Broncos. Wilson’s new crew is a 4-point favorite over the Seahawks on “Monday Night Football.”

Starved for goals, Inter Miami set to face D.C. United

0

Joevin Jones is ready to receive extended playing time when Inter Miami CF entertains D.C. United on Saturday night.

Jones badly injured his left knee last June and returned to play 22 minutes as a sub in a 1-0 loss to Charlotte FC on Saturday. But on Tuesday, the defender started and played 84 minutes as Miami produced a 3-1 win over South Georgia Tormenta FC in the U.S. Open Cup.

After the match, the 30-year-old Jones was encouraged with his progress.

“It’s all about getting my confidence back and my momentum and getting match fit to finish the season strong,” Jones said. “I’m happy. I feel like my life is back, on the pitch with my bros again and on the field playing in front of amazing fans and happy to be back.”

Jones made five starts in 10 appearances last season prior to the injury. Overall, the native of Trinidad and Tobago has played in 132 MLS matches (107 starts) and has six goals and 20 assists in stints with the Chicago Fire (2015) and Seattle Sounders (2016-20).

Jones will be looking to help Miami (3-6-1, 10 points) snap a two-game losing streak. The club has been outscored 3-0 during the slide.

D.C. United (4-5-0, 12 points) have won two of their past three MLS matches, including a 2-0 victory over the visiting Houston Dynamo last Saturday.

Forward Taxiarchis Fountas scored both goals for D.C. United and he has a team-leading four on the campaign.

Goalkeeper Bill Hamid (ankle) departed early in the second half but he is expected to be available. Rafael Romo finished up in goal against the Dynamo.

D.C. United also had a U.S. Open Cup game on Tuesday, falling 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls. Most of the D.C. United regulars were rested and some players were called up from Loudoun United FC of the United Soccer League for the match.

“It’s guys that haven’t played together,” D.C. United interim coach Chad Ashton said afterward. “It’s basically one day of practice and they’re getting thrown out there, and I am putting them in a position probably to fail. It’s on me at the end of the day.”

T1, Valorant head coach David Denis part ways

0

T1 released Valorant head coach David Denis in the aftermath of a dismal showing in the Valorant Champions Tour 2022: North American Stage 2 Challengers open qualifier.

Denis previously worked with teams in League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive since 2016.

The Canadian has a background in performance coaching. He is a registered psychotherapist who combined that experience with his passion for gaming. Denis teaches athletes how to improve their focus and ultimately their performance in competition.

In a statement posted to Twitter, T1 lauded Denis for his work on the mental health side of the game.

“Today, we bid farewell to @DavidDenisnd as Head Coach for #T1VALORANT,” the team wrote. “Thank you for your contribution to this journey with us and recognizing the importance of mental health in esports.”

He had been with T1 since 2021.

In February, T1 suspended Denis for the North American VCT open qualifier after Riot Games found evidence that T1’s coaching staff communicated with players mid-match against TSM in the tournament — a violation of the rules.

With a home-ice edge, Hurricanes face Bruins in Game 7

Win or go home.

The season will be on the line for both sides when the Carolina Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round series on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

The Bruins forced the deciding contest with a 5-2 win in Game 6 on Thursday in Boston.

“This is what you play for,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Guys should be excited. Game 7, Stanley Cup playoffs, home or road. I’d rather be at home, but we play where we play. I’d play on Mars if we had to.”

For Cassidy’s crew to knock out the Hurricanes, they’ll have to do something they have yet to accomplish thus far in the postseason — be victorious in Raleigh.

“We’ve got to win now one road game,” Cassidy said. “That’s what’s in front of us. We knew that when we started this series. We’d have to win a road game, at least one, if we wanted to advance. So here it is.”

Depth proved to be a strength for the Bruins in Game 6, with four of the five goals coming from someone other than their usual go-to scorers, Brad Marchand and captain Patrice Bergeron.

“You always want to help out and produce, but you just want to play the right way,” said Charlie Coyle, who had a goal and an assist and sits tied for second on the team in postseason scoring. “That’s all it is, no matter who you’re playing with.

“We got a lot of contributions from different guys (Thursday). … We’re just glad we got the job done.”

Carolina hopes the trend of home-ice advantage, which has factored into each side skating away victorious in their own rinks, continues for Saturday’s tilt.

“Everybody is obviously excited about it. It’s do or die,” goalie Antti Raanta said. “With how the series has been, home teams have been successful. We’re hoping that we can keep that going and get the energy from the crowd.”

Stronger play on special teams at home has been key for the Hurricanes. After going 0-for-3 on the power play in the series opener, Carolina went 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) in Games 2 and 5. At the other end, the Hurricanes’ penalty killers have held the Bruins to one goal on 11 opportunities through three games in Raleigh.

“You need everyone playing detailed hockey and limiting your mistakes as best you can,” captain Jordan Staal said. “And obviously just trusting in our game. Those are all the things we faltered at (Thursday). We have to come out in Game 7 with an effort that we obviously need to beat this team.”

The Hurricanes are looking for more from their top-end talent, who have struggled to produce as the series has progressed. Andrei Svechnikov scored both goals on Thursday, his first tallies since Game 1.

Sebastian Aho had two assists in Game 5 but hasn’t scored since striking twice in Game 2.

“We say it all the time, but we’ve got to get everyone going,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Let’s just be blunt. If you play poorly here, then you’re going to be in trouble. It was nice to see (Svechnikov) get a couple, but we need everybody to be ready to roll next game.”

Reports: Cowboys sign first-rounder Tyler Smith to $13.38M deal

First-round draft pick Tyler Smith signed a four-year $13.38 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys, multiple outlets reported Friday.

The deal for the offensive lineman is fully guaranteed and contains a fifth-year team option, per the reports.

Smith took part in the team’s minicamp on Friday and played at left guard.

The Cowboys took Smith with the No. 24 overall pick in last month’s NFL draft. And while some observers thought that slot was too high for the Tulsa product, Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones disagreed.

“I just think his upside is tremendous,” Jones said on the PFT PM Podcast after the draft. “He played at a smaller school there at Tulsa. He only played in 18 games at Tulsa. But we just feel like his skill set really lends to him having an opportunity to be a top, top left tackle at some point.”

Report: Sixers F Danny Green has torn ACL

Philadelphia 76ers forward Danny Green sustained a torn left ACL during Thursday’s season-ending loss to the Miami Heat, The Athletic reported Friday.

Green, who turns 35 next month, had to be carried to the locker room after a first-quarter collision with teammate Joel Embiid.

Green finished with three points and one steal in three minutes. Philadelphia lost the game, 99-90, and the series, 4-2, as top-seeded Miami advanced to the Eastern Conference finals.

Green averaged 5.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 21.8 minutes in 62 games (28 starts) in 2021-22, his second season in Philadelphia and 13th season in the NBA.

The three-time NBA champion has career averages of 8.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 819 games (709 starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2009-10), San Antonio Spurs (2010-18), Toronto Raptors (2018-19), Los Angeles Lakers (2019-20) and the 76ers. He is a 39.9-percent shooter from 3-point range for his career.

Green signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Sixers in May 2021. The second season of that contract in 2022-23 is non-guaranteed.

FC Cincinnati rolling with scuffling Fire up next

0

FC Cincinnati is now alive, well and amid the most successful stretch of its four-year MLS tenure.

Meanwhile, a promising start to the season for the Chicago Fire has turned sour.

Looking to extend its franchise-record winning streak to four games, visiting FC Cincinnati can also hand the Fire a fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday night.

After being outscored 8-4 during an 0-3-1 rut, Cincinnati (5-5-1, 16 points) now owns a 5-1 scoring edge, and recorded back-to-back shutouts, during the club’s first-ever three-game MLS winning streak.

Although FC Cincinnati fell 5-1 to the New England Revolution in U.S. Open Cup play this week, they return to league action confident to continue their historic run.

“We have a few more answers (than earlier in the season), when we were, in a lot of ways, still figuring out who we were,” Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan said. “I expect that we will use (the U.S. Open Cup loss) as a learning tool, but also as motivation to right the wrong quickly.”

Brandon Vazquez and Luciano Acosta have combined for 10 of FCC’s 14 goals this season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s 21-year-old rookie goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, has started three straight MLS matches and made 11 saves, while blanking Toronto FC and Minnesota United FC.

Last in the Eastern Conference, the Fire (2-4-4, 10 points) have totaled seven goals all season and are mired in an 0-4-2 rut following consecutive wins over D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City in March.

Chicago conceded two goals through its first seven games, but been outscored 9-2 during its three-game losing streak.

The Fire trailed 3-1 after 36 minutes during last weekend’s 4-1 loss at Atlanta United.

“Everybody wants to be here and everybody believes in what the coaches are implementing within the group,” Chicago forward Victor Bezerra said.

“If there’s negative losses, it only causes us to train harder and try to correct what we’re doing on the field.”

In his first season with the Fire, Xherdan Shaqiri is tied for the team lead with two goals, matching Kacper Przybylko.

The Fire and FC Cincinnati are an even 2-2-2 against each other in six all-time contests.
