Mets C James McCann (hand) out about 6 weeks

New York Mets catcher James McCann fractured his left hand and will require surgery, the club said Friday.

The Mets said McCann will be sidelined approximately six weeks.

McCann broke the hamate bone, located just above the wrist. The Mets said the injury was detected via X-ray on Friday morning.

McCann, 31, was placed on the 10-day injured list and the Mets recalled catcher Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A Syracuse.

McCann is batting .196 with one home run and six RBIs in 21 games this season. He is in the second season of a four-year, $40.6 million deal.

Overall, McCann is a .245 career hitter with 76 homers and 304 RBIs in 743 games over nine seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2014-18), Chicago White Sox (2019-20) and Mets. He was an All-Star with the White Sox in 2019 when he recorded career highs of 18 homers and 60 RBIs.

Mazeika, 28, saw action in 37 games for New York last season. He batted .190 with one homer and six RBIs.

Tomas Nido, who is batting .204 in 18 games, is the Mets’ other catcher.

Brittney Griner pre-trial detention extended one month

Authorities in Russia extended the pretrial detention of Brittney Griner by one month, according to a lawyer representing the seven-time All-Star.

Griner, 31, was arrested in February at an airport near Moscow and is accused of illegally transporting cartridges of hashish oil, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Griner was on her way back to the United States for the start of training camp with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. She plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia during the offseason.

She has played for the team for six seasons and many other WNBA players participate in the league for financial reasons.

A trial is now expected for Griner, her attorneys said, but U..S officials have classified her arrest as “wrongful detainment.”

The label from President Joe Biden implies the government considers the detention to be based solely on being a United States national.

Mariners option OF Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A

The Seattle Mariners optioned outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday before starting a three-game road series against the New York Mets.

Considered one of the top prospects in the sport when he made his Major League Baseball debut last season, Kelenic has struggled at the plate for Seattle. In 30 games this season, he is batting .140 with 10 RBIs and six extra-base hits, including three home runs.

He has also drawn just nine walks while striking out 36 times.

The Mariners acquired Kelenic, 22, from the New York Mets as part of a large December 2018 trade that sent Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to New York. Kelenic has yet to face the Mets in his young career.

The Kelenic decision was part of a slew of roster moves the Mariners made Friday. Left-handed pitcher Danny Young was also optioned to Triple-A, and outfielder Stuart Fairchild was optioned to Tacoma and designated for assignment.

Seattle also selected outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from Tacoma. Souza will make his Mariners debut Friday playing right field and batting eighth in his 500th MLB game.

Souza is a career .230 hitter with 72 home runs and 206 RBIs to his credit. Seattle is his sixth major league club after stints with the Washington Nationals (2014), Tampa Bay Rays (2015-17), Arizona Diamondbacks (2018), Chicago Cubs (2020) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2021).

Mike Ford — whom the Mariners acquired from the San Francisco Giants two weeks after trading him there — reported to the club and will make his team debut Friday, batting seventh as the DH.

The Mariners also claimed right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Sampson made his major league debut with Seattle in 2016, starting one game and allowing four earned runs in a loss. He had pitched just one inning of relief for the Cubs this season before being waived.

Finally, the Mariners DFA’d right-hander Yohan Ramirez and reinstated righty reliever Sergio Romo from the 10-day injured list. Romo, in his first season with Seattle and 15th in the majors, had both COVID-19 and right shoulder inflammation.

RHP Kumar Rocker to play in Frontier League ahead of MLB draft

Right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker, whom the New York Mets drafted with the No. 10 overall pick last year but didn’t sign, is auditioning for teams for the upcoming 2022 draft.

The Tri-City ValleyCats of the independent Frontier League announced Friday they’d agreed to terms with Rocker, who won the College World Series with Vanderbilt in 2019. He was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the series.

Rocker, 22, was named an All-American in 2021 after going 14-4 with a 2.73 ERA and 179 strikeouts in 122 innings.

The Mets didn’t sign Rocker last year after a physical exam raised concerns about the health of his arm, ESPN reported at the time.

Scott Boras, Rocker’s agent, disputed that the pitcher had any physical ailments.

“Kumar Rocker is healthy according to independent medical review by multiple prominent baseball orthopedic surgeons,” Boras said in a statement to media outlets last summer. “Immediately upon conclusion of his collegiate season, he had an MRI on both his shoulder and his elbow. When compared with his 2018 MRIs, the medical experts found no significant change.”

When the Mets walked away from signing Rocker, the pitcher didn’t receive a previously agreed-upon $6 million signing bonus.

Because they didn’t sign Rocker, the Mets will receive the 11th pick in the 2022 draft as compensation.

The ValleyCats, who play their home games in Troy, N.Y., began their season on Thursday.

Rocker will have two months to impress major league scouts. The 2022 MLB Draft begins July 17, with the Baltimore Orioles picking first.

Ricky Council IV announces transfer to Arkansas

Former Wichita State guard Ricky Council IV indicated Friday that he is transferring to Arkansas.

“Arkansas how we feeling,” Council asked while announcing his commitment on Twitter.

Council was the American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year last season when he averaged 12 points and 5.4 rebounds in 28 games (seven starts) for the Shockers. He also had 32 steals and shot 43.7 percent from the field.

Council averaged 9.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in 49 games (eight starts) in two seasons at Wichita State. Because of the free season of eligibility due to COVID-19, Council has three seasons remaining.

Council announced he was entering the transfer portal on April 21. He also considered Alabama, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas and Mississippi State.

Arkansas has reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. The Razorbacks have also added three five-star recruits from the 2022 class: point guard Anthony Black, combo guard Nick Smith and small forward Jordan Walsh.

Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw on IL with back inflammation

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw on the injured list Friday with right SI joint inflammation.

The SI (sacroiliac) joint is the lowest point of the spine, marking yet another back-related injury for Kershaw, who has been plagued with them over the years.

Kershaw, 34, made just 21 starts in 2016 because of a mild herniated disc and was unable to pitch in the All-Star Game that season. He also missed five weeks in 2017 with a strained lower back, while another back issue forced him to the injured list in 2020.

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled left-hander Garrett Cleavinger from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Kershaw was supposed to start Friday night’s home game against the Philadelphia Phillies, with right-hander Walker Buehler moving into that role instead on a regular four days of rest.

Kershaw, who signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers before the start of the season, is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts and pitched seven perfect innings in his season opener at Minnesota last month.

In 15 seasons, the three-time National League Cy Young Award winner is 189-84 with a 2.48 ERA and is the club’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 2,702.

Cleavinger, 28, had a 5.40 ERA in two outings with the Dodgers earlier this season. In 25 outings (one start) with the Phillies and Dodgers over the past three seasons, he is 2-4 with a 3.54 ERA.

Nashville SC looks to carry momentum on road versus Dynamo

0

Nashville SC will look to continue to play well on the road when it travels to Houston to square off the rebounding Dynamo FC on Saturday in a Western Conference match.

The Dynamo (3-4-3, 12 points) return home after a 2-0 loss at D.C. United on May 7. Houston has lost three straight league matches after falling just once, with three wins and three draws, in its first seven MLS contests this season.

Houston was able to get back on the winning track a 1-0 win over San Antonio FC on Wednesday in a U.S. Open Cup round-of-16 match.

“It’s a step-by-step process and again, the guys who stepped onto the field today, the guys who had the opportunity, they took the opportunity really well,” Houston coach Paulo Nagamura said after Wednesday’s win. “Every time we step on the field, even if we rotate the squad or if in a league game, it’s to win games and that’s the goal — to put this club where we want to go.”

Nashville (4-3-3, 15 points) ended a three-match winless run with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Sunday, in the process claiming its first victory in its gleaming new stadium, Geodis Park. Dave Romney scored in the 63rd minute for the home side before CJ Sapong sealed the victory with a tally in stoppage time.

Nashville also earned a win in U.S. Open Cup play on Wednesday, coming back from two down to beat Atlanta United 3-2. It has recorded consecutive MLS wins just once since September 2021 but is playing its best football of the season after dominating Real Salt Lake and then beating its rival.

“The guys will be as high as a kite – I’ll be pulling them off the ceiling,” Nashville coach Gary Smith said after the victory over Atlanta. “They’ll have a recovery day (Thursday), and they will be ready, trust me.”

Nashville has never lost to the Dynamo, forging a win and a draw in 2020, which was the most recent time the sides have played.

G Eric Hunter Jr. transfers from Purdue to Butler

Butler announced the addition Friday of guard Eric Hunter Jr. as a graduate transfer from Purdue.

Hunter played in 128 games (74 starts) over four seasons with the Boilermakers and made the Big Ten’s All-Defensive Team in 2021-22.

“Eric knows how to win,” Butler coach Thad Matta said in a news release. “He’s played in big games and that experience will benefit our team on the court and in the locker room. Eric takes pride in being a solid defender and a steady floor general. He can make plays for others and finish possessions by hitting shots.”

Hunter averaged 6.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 25.8 minutes in 37 games (19 starts) last season as Purdue advanced to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament.

He finished his Boilermakers career with 842 points, 283 rebounds, 261 assists and 95 steals.

The Indianapolis native joins his hometown Bulldogs for the 2022-23 campaign. He will be using the extra season of eligibility provided by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reports: Raiders trade WR Bryan Edwards to Falcons

The Las Vegas Raiders traded wide receiver Bryan Edwards to the Atlanta Falcons, multiple outlets reported Friday.

The Raiders also sent a 2023 seventh-round pick to Atlanta in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round selection.

Edwards, 23, caught 34 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (12 starts) last season.

A third-round pick out of South Carolina in 2020, he had 11 catches for 193 yards and one TD in 12 games (three starts) in his rookie season.

The Raiders still have plenty of targets for quarterback Derek Carr. They acquired All-Pro wideout Davante Adams in a trade with the Green Bay Packers in March, while Hunter Renfrow is coming off a 103-catch, 1,038-yard season in 2021. Tight end Darren Waller has 252 receptions for 3,006 yards in the past three seasons.

The Falcons are trying to make up for the loss of receiver Calvin Ridley, suspended for the 2022 season for betting on NFL games. Atlanta took Southern California’s Drake London with the No. 8 overall pick in last month’s draft.

Oilers ready to face Kings in ‘bonkers’ Game 7

The Edmonton Oilers have both momentum and home-ice advantage going their way when they play host to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday in Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round series.

The favored Oilers, who are looking to win a series for the first time since 2017, will not underestimate the mental aspect of the challenge ahead against a team that has managed to claw its way through the matchup.

Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft wants his charges to see the possibilities instead of the pressure.

“It’s a great opportunity for us,” Woodcroft said. “We’ve had some really good moments in the series, but for us to get to where we want, we have to … get our mind right for what the challenge is going to require.

“We have a very clear understanding of who we are. We understand how we have to play to be successful.”

Edmonton is 6-4 in all-time Game 7s, with a 3-1 home record. The Kings have a 7-4 mark in Game 7 clashes, including a 5-3 road record.

The Oilers forced the deciding game with Thursday’s 4-2 road victory, in which Evander Kane scored twice to give him seven goals in the series. Connor McDavid collected one goal and two assists to give him a league-best 12 points in the playoffs, and Tyson Barrie scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining.

“I can’t wait,” Barrie said. “(Our fans have) been amazing all year, all playoffs and we’ve seen the crowds and what they’re getting up to, so it’s going to be bonkers in there. We can’t wait to get on the ice for Game 7. It’s going to be awesome.”

Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse will return to the lineup after he served his one-game suspension for head-butting Phillip Danault in Game 5.

The Kings, who finished five points behind the Oilers in the regular season for third place in the Pacific Division, wasted an opportunity to clinch the series on home ice Thursday. They fell behind early, then erased a 2-0 deficit only to allow a late goal.

Now the quest for Los Angeles is to learn from what transpired.

“The older guys haven’t been there in a few years, and we have a few guys that haven’t experienced this at all, so it’s natural,” Kings captain Anze Kopitar said. “But if you told us that we got to win one game to advance, we’d certainly take the opportunity. So, it’s not all that bad.”

Kopitar is one of only a few players remaining from the Kings’ Stanley Cup winning teams of 2012 and ’14, and the lesson he wants his teammates to learn is to focus on their first shift and nothing else.

“I think maybe the thought of ending the series kind of creeped into our mind and we started off a little tentative,” he said.

Kings coach Todd McLellan recognized his team was the underdog to start the series, but that narrative is out the window now.

“We’ve had a dress rehearsal,” McLellan said. “We have enough experience, guys that have been through this before.

“We like this situation. If somebody said ‘Hey, the L.A. Kings against the Edmonton Oilers, go play for one game,’ we’re not particularly happy with how we got to it (with Thursday’s loss), but we can’t do anything about that now, so let’s look ahead. We’ve won there before and we can win there again.”

The Kings hoped 20-goal scorer Viktor Arvidsson would suit up at some point in the series, but he’s been ruled out due to injury.
