Minjee Lee takes 3-shot lead at Cognizant Founders Cup

0

Minjee Lee of Australia went low with a 9-under 63 Friday to take the 36-hole lead at the Cognizant Founders Cup in Clifton, N.J.

Lee’s round featured eight birdies, an eagle and just one bogey. It helped her build a three-shot advantage over Ally Ewing, Lexi Thompson and Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom, who enter the weekend tied for second at 11 under.

Lee holed a lengthy putt to eagle the par-5 12th at Upper Montclair Country Club. She was on track for a career-low 62 before her lone bogey at No. 16 brought her back a shot.

“I go pretty much shot by shot and not get too far ahead of myself,” Lee said. “When I had a putt I tried to hole it. When I had a shot I tried to hit it close.”

Lee is searching for her first win on the LPGA Tour since the Evian Championship — her first major title — last July.

Sagstrom led after the first round thanks to her own 63 Thursday, but starting on the back nine Friday, she was 2 over par for her round through five holes. She recovered with a birdie at No. 18 and three more on the front to shoot a 2-under 70.

“I was talking to (caddie Shane Codd) and I think I was trying a bit too hard,” Sagstrom said. “Trying to find the same momentum I had yesterday and it just wasn’t there, so I think I kind of just had to calm myself down.”

Thompson shot a bogey-free 66, and Ewing matched the 66 with seven birdies and just one bogey. Thompson was glad to improve her showing on the back nine from a 1-over 37 Thursday to a 3-under 33 Friday.

“My front nine was definitely a little sketchy (Thursday). Wasn’t my best ball striking,” Thompson said. “Just felt a little bit out of it. But I just tried to scratch that going into the turn. … Let’s just start scratch and let’s just fire away at the pins and commit to my shots. That’s all I can do.”

New Jersey was also the setting for Thompson’s last victory on tour — the 2019 ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Finland’s Sanna Nuutinen shot a 4-under 68 to take sole possession of fifth place at 9 under. Paula Reto of South Africa (67), Carlota Ciganda of Spain (69) and Megan Khang (72) were tied for sixth at 8 under.

Eighty players made the cut of 1 under or better, including defending champion and world No. 1 Jin Young Ko of South Korea (5 under). Sixteen-year-old amateur Anna Davis shot a second straight 70 to make the cut at 4 under, her second made cut in as many starts on tour.

Austin FC’s road-heavy journey starts at Real Salt Lake

0

Austin FC has taken a big leap forward in its sophomore MLS season.

The Verde and Black are enjoying a stellar start heading into a road match with Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah on Saturday. Austin (6-2-2, 20 points) amassed 20 points in its first nine matches – including comeback victories in each of the club’s last two matches away from home – before falling 1-0 to the LA Galaxy last weekend.

Early road success bodes well for Austin. Saturday’s road tilt with RSL will mark the start of a nine-game stretch that will see the Verde and Black play seven road matches.

Maintaining a potent offensive will be a key to securing valuable road points. Austin is averaging 2.2 goals per game, led by seven goals and three assists from Sebastian Driussi.

Still, the Texas club could not finish chances against the Galaxy after giving up a goal in the sixth minute and suffered its first loss in nearly two months. Austin had an advantage on shots, possession, and accurate passes but it didn’t translate in the win-loss column.

“We started quite poorly,” Austin coach Josh Wolff said. “We were sluggish and sloppy in the first half. I don’t think it was necessarily anything LA was doing. We lacked energy and intensity.”

Salt Lake (4-3-4, 15 points) is on the other side of offensive coin. RSL has generated a paltry 10 goals in its first 11 matches. Only Bobby Wood and Tate Schmitt have scored multiple goals at this point. It’s one major reason why the Utah club has generated a single victory since winning three of four matches to open the season. The latest setback was a 2-0 loss to Nashville SC last weekend.

Back and calf injuries have limited team captain Damir Kreilach, who has appeared in just six matches so far. His absence has disrupted the usual creative flow in Salt Lake’s offense.

“It’s something that we’ve been focusing on and we’ll continue to focus on,” Salt Lake coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “But Damir is a huge part of our group on both sides of the ball, not to mention leadership. Without Damir, the guys have been doing extremely well, just not enough to create quality chances on goal.”

The Utah club has done well on its home soil to date. RSL has won three matches and drawn another at Rio Tinto Stadium this season while enjoying four consecutive sellouts.

IronSource Shares Up 7% Following Q1 Results

0

ironSource Ltd. (NYSE:IS) shares closed more than 7% higher on Friday following the company’s announced Q1 results, with EPS of $0.05 coming in above the Street estimate of $0.03. Revenue was $190 million, beating the Street estimate of $183.71 million.
The better-than-expected Q1 results were overshadowed by the lowering of full 2022 revenue and EBITDA estimates given changes in macro conditions and gaming customers suggesting user acquisition spending will tick down.
When compared to the weaker guidance, analysts at Deutsche Bank naturally expect this to raise questions regarding the company’s ability to maintain share. Here management was adamant there is no issue and in fact highlighted sequential mediation share gains among the top 100 games.
Deutsche Bank lowered its price target on the company’s shares to $6 from $9, while reiterating its buy rating.

Steve Stricker ahead by two at Regions Tradition

Steve Stricker maintained his lead at the first major of the PGA Tour Champions season and will take a two-shot advantage into the weekend at the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala.

Stricker shot a 4-under 68 to move to 11 under for the tournament. Scott McCarron flew up the leaderboard with the low round of the day, a 65, to reach 9 under. He was tied for second with Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (66).

South Africa’s Ernie Els was alone in fourth at 8 under after his second consecutive 68. Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez (70), Australia’s Stuart Appleby (69) and New Zealand’s Steven Alker (69) were tied for fifth at 7 under.

Stricker carded five birdies and one bogey Friday. The 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup captain opened on the back nine at Greystone Golf and Country Club and posted a birdie at the par-3 10th to get going.

The 55-year-old is now halfway home to his fourth major title on the Champions Tour — all after battling what he called a “mystery illness” over the winter that led to a long hospital stay and caused him to drop 25 pounds.

“I was a little more fatigued this morning waking up,” Stricker said. “Rest the next couple of days is paramount.”

McCarron is an 11-time winner on the 50-and-older circuit but hasn’t broken through since June 2019. He’s a lot closer now, thanks to four straight birdies early in his round at Nos. 12-15. The 56-year-old is still returning from an ankle surgery he had last year.

“I haven’t had many good rounds or tournaments this year, but I’m happy to be playing,” McCarron said. “I’m still coming off of that surgery, the doctor said it would be about a year before I can really go at it, but I’m ahead of schedule and I’m just happy to be out here playing.”

John Daly was disqualified Friday for failing to sign his scorecard after playing the first two rounds at 4 under.

After top-notch defensive outing, Sky turn focus to winless Lynx

After allowing 98 points in their season-opening overtime loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, the WNBA champion Chicago Sky got flat-out defensive Wednesday night.

Holding the New York Liberty to 7-of-35 shooting in the first half, Chicago established an insurmountable 19-point halftime on its way to a record-breaking 83-50 win that squared its record at 1-1.

The Sky will try to make it consecutive wins Saturday night in Minneapolis when they face the 0-3 Minnesota Lynx.

Chicago set a club record for allowing its fewest points in a game while limiting New York’s explosive offense to its lowest point total in eight years. It was also the largest margin of victory in Sky history, surpassing a 32-point win last year against Seattle.

Dana Evans, who tallied a career-high 24 points and four steals in the loss to Los Angeles, again led Chicago in scoring with 15. Evans went 3-for-3 from 3-point distance and bagged four rebounds and three assists in an impressive all-around outing, further suggesting the Sky are one of the league’s deepest teams.

“Dana is a really good player and she has a chip on her shoulder,” said Chicago coach James Wade.

The Sky also got a lift from 31-year old rookie Rebekah Gardner, a UCLA product who’s played overseas the last 10 years. Gardner scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in her WNBA debut.

Meanwhile, Minnesota is still waiting for its first bit of good news, aside from the play of 36-year old center Sylvia Fowles, who’s in her final season. Retiring at the end of this season, Fowles is averaging 18.3 points and 8.7 rebounds, numbers that look similar to her career norms of 15.8 ppg and 9.8 boards.

But the Lynx are short-handed and struggling. They dropped an 82-76 decision Tuesday night at rebuilding Indiana, allowing the Fever to hit 9 of 20 3-pointers while making only 4 of 19 themselves. Minnesota also coughed up 19 turnovers, leading to 24 points.

“We’re going to spend our time tweaking and working and finding the right combination,” said Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve.

Padres’ Robinson Cano insists he has ‘a lot left in the tank’

The San Diego Padres officially signed veteran infielder Robinson Cano on Friday, hours before a road game against the Atlanta Braves.

Cano, 39, was released by the New York Mets on Sunday. The club designated Cano for assignment on May 2 and he was let go after clearing waivers.

Cano, an eight-time All-Star, was batting just .195 with one homer and three RBIs in 12 games with the Mets. But he insists he can still perform at a high level.

“I’ve got a lot left in the tank,” Cano told reporters in Atlanta. “I know I can still play this game and just go out on top.”

Acting manager Ryan Christenson said Cano will get occasional starts at second base and designated hitter. Cano was not in Friday’s starting lineup.

Christenson is running the club after manager Bob Melvin recently underwent prostate surgery.

Cano will be paid $20.25 million this season but the Padres are only on the hook for a prorated share of the $700,000 minimum salary. The Mets owe the remainder.

Cano has 2,632 career hits, 335 homers and 1,305 RBIs in 2,246 games with the New York Yankees (2005-13), Seattle Mariners (2014-18) and Mets. The Dominican Republic native has a .302 career batting average.

Cano missed the 2021 season following his second suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

“I missed the game,” Cano said. “I would say every bad situation you’ve got to take the good things out of it. I had a chance to spend time with my kids, being a dad. My daughter’s only 5. My son is 11. You’ve just got to move on and turn the page.”

The Padres optioned struggling right-hander Dinelson Lamet to Triple-A El Paso to open a roster spot. Lamet, 29, is 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in 10 relief appearances.

Sparks remain on road, put new look up against Sun

Coming off a rare losing season, the Los Angeles Sparks wanted to push the pace and pile up the points.

So far, the Sparks are meeting their goal of producing offense and hope to continue being productive in the finale of a season-opening four-game road trip when they visit the Connecticut Sun, who are playing their home opener at Uncasville, Conn.

Los Angeles (2-1) went 12-20 last season when it ranked last in the league with 72.8 points per game and were 11th in field goal percentage (41.1 percent), resulting in its first losing season since 2015 and seventh in team history.

To avoid a repeat of its disappointing season, the Sparks added Liz Cambage in free agency along with perimeter players Jordin Canada, Katie Lou Samuelson and Chennedy Carter. While Samuelson has yet to appear, Canada and Cambage each have averaged 16.7 points per game, while Neneka Ogwumike is at 16.3 points.

The Sparks are averaging 86.7 points, fourth best in the WNBA heading into play Friday, while shooting 43.8 percent. Los Angeles opened the season by shooting 49.2 percent in a seven-point overtime win at Chicago and a 47.9 percent in a 10-point win at Indiana on Sunday but dropped to 34.7 percent in a 77-75 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday.

“For a new group, and not having a lot of experience together, (they) still remain calm through adversity on the road,” Sparks coach Derek Fisher said. “Often it takes a little time for a team to stay together on the road. … I think our veteran leaders are setting a great example of how to stay the course and continue to play one possession at a time.

The Sun (0-1), had the league’s top regular season record last season at 26-6 before falling to the eventual champion Chicago Sky in the semifinals. They are again among preseason picks to win the title.

But Connecticut dropped its season-opener 81-79 to the New York Liberty last Saturday.

Alyssa Thomas, who was limited to seven games last season while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, scored 25 points. Reigning WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones added 15, but the Sun shot 42.2 percent, missed 13 of 17 attempts from 3-point range and committed 15 turnovers.

“I thought we competed hard,” Sun coach Curt Miller said. “I thought at times we got outhustled. We tried to play with more tempo.”

White Sox ace Lucas Giolito placed on COVID-19 list

Chicago White Sox ace right-hander Lucas Giolitio was placed on the COVID-19 list prior to Friday’s game against the New York Yankees.

Giolito wasn’t slated to face the Yankees this weekend. He last pitched Tuesday when he gave up one run and six hits over seven innings in a victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

The 27-year-old Giolito experienced symptoms earlier this week.

Giolito is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts this season. He has struck out 37 in 26 2/3 innings.

Chicago also activated outfielder Andrew Vaughn (bruised right hand) from the 10-day injured list. Vaughn went 2-for-7 with two homers during a two-game rehab stint at Triple-A Charlotte.

Vaughn, 24, is batting .283 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 16 games for the White Sox this season.

Mercury seeking second straight win over Storm

The Phoenix Mercury are looking to defeat the Seattle Storm for the second time in four days when they meet on Saturday afternoon in Seattle.

Five players scored in double figures for the Mercury (1-1) in Wednesday’s 97-77 win over the short-handed Storm (1-2), who have lost two in a row.

Tina Charles paced Phoenix with a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double. The former league MVP knocked down three of her four attempts from 3-point distance.

“I just always want to get better,” Charles said. “I know my game still has a ways to go. I’m always looking at Diana (Taurasi) and she’s always looking for ways to get better. She’s never satisfied and like I said, she has high standards and believes in me, so when we’re playing our two-man game and I have a three, she tells me to take it, so I take it.”

Like Charles, Taurasi had a hot hand, burying four 3-pointers and scoring 15 points against Seattle as she helped deliver head coach Vanessa Nygaard’s first WNBA win.

“I’m just happy to see our team make progress,” Nygaard said. “For myself as a coach, I learned a lot during the game.”

The Storm were without three key players in Wednesday’s loss. Breanna Stewart and Epiphanny Prince are both currently out due to the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocol. Mercedes Russell remains out with a non-basketball-related injury.

Jewell Loyd scored a season-best 26 points for Seattle, which will look to get back on track. Limiting mistakes will be key. The Storm had 15 turnovers Wednesday.

“Some of the things we have been talking about as a team defensively, we have to continue to grow and get better at,” Seattle head coach Noelle Quinn said. “Obviously taking care of the ball is one of those things. They scored off every one of our turnovers.”
