NHL roundup: Carter Verhaeghe scores in OT as Panthers advance

Carter Verhaeghe’s goal 2:46 into overtime gave the Florida Panthers a series-clinching 4-3 victory over the host Washington Capitals in Game 6 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Coming off a franchise-record and NHL-high 122 points in the regular season, Florida won its first postseason series since the 1996 Eastern Conference finals, the longest playoff drought of any team in the NHL. The Panthers are headed to the second round to face the winner of the series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Verhaeghe also scored the overtime winner in Game 4, adding to a spectacular series for the Panthers forward. With a goal and an assist in Game 6, Verhaeghe led all players with 12 points (six goals, six assists) in the series. Verhaeghe was a game-time decision to even take the ice in Game 6, after missing the morning skate with an undisclosed injury.

Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists, fueling the Panthers’ third consecutive comeback win. With the Capitals leading 2-1 through 48 minutes of play, Giroux equalized at 8:18 of the third period, then recorded helpers on both Aleksander Barkov’s go-ahead goal and Verhaeghe’s overtime winner.

Nic Dowd, Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie all scored for Washington, with all three players coming close to hero status. Dowd hit two posts in the third period, Backstrom’s third-period goal gave the Capitals the lead, and Oshie forced overtime with a power-play marker with 63 seconds left in regulation.

Rangers 5, Penguins 3

Chris Kreider’s second goal of the night was the tiebreaker with 1:28 left in the third period as visiting New York topped Pittsburgh to set up a Game 7 in the first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Kreider’s slapshot from the left point popped off of and over Louis Domingue to break a 3-3 tie. Andrew Copp added an empty-netter with 26.4 seconds left, completing New York’s rally from a 2-0 deficit. Mika Zibanejad had two goals and two assists while Adam Fox had four assists for the Rangers, who have won two straight to even the series.

Jeff Carter, Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins, and Domingue made 33 saves. Pittsburgh played without captain Sidney Crosby, who left Game 5 after a high hit by New York’s Jacob Trouba. Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday in New York.

Stars 4, Flames 2

Miro Heiskanen scored the winning goal and host Dallas forced Game 7 in its Western Conference first-round series against Calgary.

Roope Hintz and Michael Raffl each had a goal and an assist and Tyler Seguin added an empty-net tally for the Stars. Jake Oettinger made 36 saves for the win.

Michael Stone collected one goal and one assist, and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames. Jacob Markstrom stopped 36 shots.

Stars stop Flames, send series to Game 7 in Calgary

Miro Heiskanen scored the winning goal and the host Dallas Stars forced Game 7 in their Western Conference first-round series against the Calgary Flames with a 4-2 home-ice victory on Friday.

Game 7 will be Sunday in Calgary.

After watching their 2-0 lead disappear, the Stars regrouped and regained the edge with 2:28 left in the second period. Heiskanen’s shot from the high slot found its way through the maze of players for his first of the series and made it a 3-2 game.

Seguin sealed the victory with 42 seconds remaining in the third period.

Hintz opened the scoring 14:52 into the first period. Seconds after Oettinger denied Johnny Gaudreau on a golden chance, the Stars took the puck the other way. Joe Pavelski left a drop-pass for Hintz, who buried a shot from the left faceoff dot for his second goal of the series.

Raffl doubled the lead at 6:04 of the second period. Joel Kiviranta outbattled Oliver Kylington for the puck at the Calgary blue line, only to be denied by Markstrom. However, Raffl shoveled home the loose puck for his second goal of the playoffs.

Stone provided the Flames a much needed jolt two minutes later. Gaudreau led a three-on-one rush and fed a pass to Stone to convert for his first goal of the playoffs.

Backlund’s third tally in as many games tied the clash at 11:59 of the second period. Just as a power play ended, Backlund sent a one-timer from the right circle that Oettinger stopped, but it bounced off a defender and into the net.

The Flames also took a huge roster hit. Defenseman Christopher Tanev left the game before the midway point after going down awkwardly in a collision when Raffl scored.

Carter Verhaeghe’s OT heroics help Panthers eliminate Capitals

Carter Verhaeghe’s goal 2:46 into overtime gave the Florida Panthers a series-clinching 4-3 victory over the host Washington Capitals in Game 6 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Coming off a franchise-record and NHL-high 122 points in the regular season, Florida won its first postseason series since the 1996 Eastern Conference finals, the longest playoff drought of any team in the NHL.

After losing their last seven postseason series, the Panthers are headed to the second round to face the winner of the series between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Ryan Lomberg scored the Panthers’ other goal. Lomberg was making his first appearance in the lineup since Game 1.

Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 34 of 37 shots for his 17th career playoff victory.

The Panthers won the series despite Washington’s domination of the special teams battle. Florida was 0-for-18 on the power play during the series, while the Capitals were 7-for-24 with the extra attacker.

Since winning the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, the Capitals have been eliminated in the first round in each of the last four seasons.

Ilya Samsonsov stopped 27 of 31 shots for the Capitals.

Warriors pull away late, close out Grizzlies in Game 6

Andrew Wiggins gave Golden State the lead for good on a 3-pointer with 6:29 to go and the Warriors earned a sixth trip to the Western Conference finals in the past eight years with a 110-96 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in Game 6 of their first-round series in San Francisco.

Klay Thompson had a game-high-tying 30 points, Stephen Curry added 29 and Kevon Looney led a dominant effort on the boards with a career-high 22 rebounds for the third-seeded Warriors, who successfully rebounded from a 39-point shellacking in Game 5 at Memphis.

The Warriors, who won three championships between 2015 and ’18 but missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons, will face either top-seeded Phoenix or fourth-seeded Dallas in the Western finals. The Suns host the Mavericks in a decisive Game 7 on Sunday.

“I know it became routine, but it’s a special, special activity,” Thompson said of reaching the conference finals. “We don’t take that lightly. It’s just so special. I’m going to enjoy it tonight and I’m going to be hungry when the time comes.”

After neither team led by more than nine points in a tightly contested first three quarters, the sides traded the lead three times and mixed in a pair of ties before Wiggins buried his go-ahead 3-pointer for a 90-89 advantage.

Wiggins then added a dunk, Curry a 3-pointer and Draymond Green a dunk off a Looney assist as Golden State scored the next seven points to go up 97-89 with 5:04 remaining.

The second-seeded Grizzlies, who effectively lost home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series with a home loss in Game 1, got no closer than seven after that.

“Congrats to the Warriors,” Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said. “One heckuva series. Very competitive for six games. … This obviously stings. Such a special season with a special group. I want them to cherish that and remember that despite the loss and the end of the season right now. It’s going to motivate us.”

Thompson’s 30 points came on 11-for-22 shooting, including 8-for-14 from 3-point range. Curry hit 10 of his 27 shots and six of his 17 3-point attempts. They combined for 14 of Golden State’s 20 3-pointers, as the Warriors outscored the Ja Morant-less Grizzlies 60-45 from beyond the arc.

Wiggins finished with 18 points and Jordan Poole had 12 for Golden State. Green dished out a game-high-tying eight assists to complement a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double.

Golden State overcame 19 turnovers by outrebounding Memphis 70-44, including 25-10 on the offensive boards. Half of Looney’s 22 rebounds, eight more than he’d ever previously recorded in a playoff game and four more than he ever had in a regular-season game, came on the offensive end.

“Kevon was so big-time,” Thompson said. “That team was so physical over there. Kevon just knows where to be. He’s great at the rim. He’s a Warrior for life. He’s just a pleasure to play with.”

Wiggins was a third Warrior with double-digit rebounds, grabbing 11 to complete the team’s second double-double.

Memphis’ Dillon Brooks, who served a one-game suspension earlier for a flagrant foul that knocked Gary Payton II out of the series, matched Thompson for game-high scoring honors with 30 points. He made 7 of 15 long-range attempts.

Desmond Bane buried four 3-pointers on a 25-point night for the Grizzlies, while Jaren Jackson Jr. added 12 points and four blocks. Steven Adams had a team-high 10 rebounds and Tyus Jones logged seven points, eight assists and nine rebounds.

Chris Kreider, Rangers overtake Penguins, force Game 7

Chris Kreider’s second goal of the night was the tiebreaker with 1:28 left in the third period Friday as the visiting New York Rangers topped the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 to set up a Game 7 in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Kreider’s slapshot from the left point popped off of and over goaltender Louis Domingue to break a 3-3 tie. Andrew Copp added an empty-netter with 26.4 seconds left, completing New York’s rally from a 2-0 deficit on the night.

Mika Zibanejad had two goals and two assists while Adam Fox had four assists for the Rangers, who have won two straight to even the series.

New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves and picked up an assist.

Jeff Carter, Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins, and Domingue made 33 saves.

Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday in New York.

Pittsburgh played without captain Sidney Crosby, who left Game 5 after a high hit by New York’s Jacob Trouba.

The Penguins then lost forward Brian Boyle Friday, who left late in the first after he hit Trouba.

Carter opened the scoring at 14:12 of the first. After Kasperi Kapanen’s sharp-angle shot, Carter backhanded in the rebound.

Pittsburgh pushed it to 2-0 when Rust scored 1:36 later. From the bottom of the left circle, Rust one-timed a cross-ice pass from Jake Guentzel inside the near post.

In the second, New York scored three unanswered goals, the first two by Zibanejad to tie it.

At 5:05 and just four seconds into a power play, Zibanejad blasted a shot short side from the top of the right circle to make it 2-1, and 1:16 later, he scored on a one-timer past a screen to knot it 2-2.

Shesterkin’s long outlet pass to Zibanejad led to a go-ahead goal. As Domingue got his glove on Zibanejad’s shot but didn’t hold on, Kreider was spinning away from Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson above the crease and swept the rebound in at 13:48 of the second.

Malkin tied it 3-3 at 16:36 of the second. He poked a pass from Trouba intended for K’Andre Miller near the blue line for a long breakaway with Miller closely chasing. Malkin beat Shesterkin under his glove.

Jayson Tatum nets 46, Celtics defeat Bucks to force Game 7

Jayson Tatum scored 10 of his game-high 46 points in a key fourth-quarter sequence and teammates Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart added key hoops as the Boston Celtics held off the host Milwaukee Bucks 108-95 on Friday night to force a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series.

Brown finished with 22 points and Smart 21 for the second-seeded Celtics, who continued a trend in the series by winning for a second time on Milwaukee’s home floor.

Game 7 will be held Sunday at Boston, where the Bucks have two earlier wins in three tries in the series.

After erasing a late 14-point deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven with a win at Boston on Wednesday, the third-seeded Bucks found themselves down 84-70 with 11:25 to go this time before mounting their comeback.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks’ leading scorer with 44 points, had a three-point play, two free throws and a 3-pointer in an 11-1 burst that cut the Milwaukee deficit to 85-81 with 8:42 remaining. But this time it was the Celtics who made the decisive late push.

Tatum exploded for four straight hoops, including a pair of 3-pointers, Brown nailed a three and Smart connected from just inside the arc in a 15-6 response that re-established a double-digit lead at 100-87 with 4:20 to go, and Boston held on from there.

Tatum’s 46 points were his most this postseason and the second-most of his playoff career, trailing only his 50-point effort against the Brooklyn Nets in the first round last May.

Tatum hit 17 of his 32 shots and seven of his 15 3-point attempts, the latter contributing to the Celtics’ 17-for-43 night from deep. Smart added five 3-pointers in nine attempts, while Brown went 4-for-7.

Al Horford, held to two points, had a team-high 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who prevailed in a Game 7 the last time they were in one, eliminating the Toronto Raptors in 2020 en route to a matchup with the Miami Heat in the Eastern Finals.

The winner of Sunday’s Game 7 will meet the top-seeded Heat in the Eastern Finals, starting Tuesday in Miami.

Despite playing most of the game in foul trouble, Antetokounmpo found time for a game-high 20 rebounds and a team-high six assists to complement his 44 points, which were the second-most of his playoff career. He had 50 in last year’s NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns.

Jrue Holiday chipped in with 17 points and Pat Connaughton 14 for the Bucks, who survived a seventh game in their Eastern semifinal series against the Nets last season before going on to capture the championship.

The Bucks were outscored 51-21 on 3-pointers, making just seven of 29.

Defensive-minded teams meet as FC Dallas oppose Galaxy

0

The third- and fourth-place teams in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference go head-to-head Saturday night in Carson, Calif., when the third-place Los Angeles Galaxy face FC Dallas.

The Galaxy (6-3-1, 19 points) have scored just 11 goals in 10 matches this season but have allowed only seven — tied with Dallas for the fewest in MLS. Los Angeles goalkeeper Jonathan Bond is tied for the league lead with five shutouts.

The two teams are 1-1-1 over the last three games against each other. The Galaxy have two wins and a draw from their past three home games against FC Dallas, including a win and a draw last season. Since the start of 2011 season, the Galaxy are 8-2-3 against FC Dallas at home.

The Galaxy are looking for more production from forward Kevin Cabral, who has just one goal on the season — albeit in a U.S. Open Cup match last month. Even so, the team believes Cabral impacts the game in other ways.

“He does a lot of running, he does a lot of work, he does a lot of just the dirty work that not everybody wants to do and not everybody does,” coach Greg Vanney told the Orange County Register. “There’s a lot of value in that. We don’t have five shutouts without some of that work.”

FC Dallas (5-1-4, 19 points) also has allowed only seven goals on the season and is coming off a 2-0 win over Seattle last weekend that extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches (5-0-3). However, Dallas in winless in its past 10 road matches, with six draws and four defeats.

Forward Jesus Ferreira has scored seven goals in his first 10 games this season, and he could be on the U.S. national team come World Cup time. Only MLS legend Jason Kreis, with eight in 1999, has scored more goals in the first 10 games of a season in Dallas’ MLS history.

FC Dallas has been somewhat of a surprise with its early-season success.

“We have to keep working hard. We have to keep improving,” coach Nico Estevez told the MLS website. “We have to keep getting confidence that we can play well.”

Ryan Palmer’s scorching 62 sets up 3-way tie at Byron Nelson

0

Ryan Palmer shot the low score of the second round, firing a 62 on Friday to join a three-way tie atop the 36-hole leaderboard at the player-friendly AT&T Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.

The 45-year-old Palmer, who last won an individual PGA event in 2010 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, was flawless in his 10-birdie, bogey-free performance that shot him up to a 15-under 129 at the midway point at TPC Craig Ranch — where scores have dipped considerably ahead of the weekend.

In a field where 19 players are at 10 under of better through two rounds, Palmer is knotted with England’s David Skinns — who carded a career-low 63 on Friday — and first-round leader Sebastian Munoz of Colombia, who scored a 69 one day after a blistering 60 in his opening round.

A staggering total of 15 golfers shot 65 or better Friday, leaving a tight pack of competitors in contention. Tour rookie Justin Lower sits in fourth, his best position after any career round, one stroke back after a second-round 66. He is followed by South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel (65) at 13 under.

Three players are tied for sixth, a mere three strokes off the lead — Justin Spieth (65), Chile’s Joaquin Niemann (65) and the defending champion K.H. Lee (68) of South Korea.

Palmer, a native of Amarillo, Texas, began play on the back nine and ignited with a six-birdie stretch over seven holes — starting on the par-5 12th hole. He finished with a flourish with another four birdies on the front — on Nos. 3, 5, 6 and his final hole of the day at No. 9.

The round was one off his career best (61 in second round of the 2015 Humana Challenge).

“Today was a matter of knowing you had to shoot low, put up a good number just to stay within striking distance,” Palmer said. “You never know when you’re going to catch lightning like that, and to make 10 birdies today is (an) awesome feeling, especially in front of some fans and some friends and family.

“So I love where we’re at, love what (caddie) Randy Smith and I are doing and some of the best putting I’ve been doing as well.”

Tour rookie Skinns, 40, also tallied 10 birdies and his only blemish — a bogey on the par-4 6th hole — kept him from holding the outright tournament lead.

“I drove it well yesterday and I felt like I could do the same again today and I did and I got in a nice run there in the middle where I believe I made five in a row, which it’s one of them where you just — you’re feeling it,” Skinns said, crediting a driver change on Wednesday for his scorching play thus far.

Despite falling back to the top of the pack Friday, Munoz — a Dallas resident — rescued his round with four birdies on the front after a 1-over back nine to begin his round. The 29-year-old is searching for his second career PGA win.

Spieth, another Dallas native, looks to win his second straight tournament in as many starts after taking April’s RBC Heritage in a playoff. The 13-time PGA winner delivered eight birdies and one bogey Friday.

Scottie Scheffler, first in the latest world rankings, is among an eight-pack of players at 9 under after a 68. He was hurt by a triple-bogey 7 on No. 13.

The 5-under cut line equals the PGA’s lowest of the season, with 13 players going home Friday despite 4-under scores.
