Ha-Seong Kim’s homer propels Padres past Braves

Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run homer to help the visiting San Diego Padres rally for an 11-6 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

The Braves scored four times in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead, but Kim belted a 2-0 fastball from reliever Will Smith in the seventh to put the Padres back on top. San Diego put it away with four runs in the ninth, three of those coming on a pinch-hit double by Trent Grisham.

Kim was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs scored and his fourth home run to spark a 16-hit attack, which included three hits each from Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers. Manny Machado saw his seven-game hitting streak end, but he extended his on-base streak to 22 games with a walk.

The winning pitcher was Luis Garcia (1-2), who tossed one scoreless inning. Taylor Rogers got four outs for his 13th save.

Smith (0-1) took the loss after yielding three runs in his lone inning.

Neither starter was involved in the decision. Atlanta’s Max Fried allowed four runs on nine hits, a season-high two walks and six strikeouts in six innings. San Diego’s Yu Darvish pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Jose Azocar’s sacrifice fly.

The Braves got the run back in the bottom of the third on a 417-foot solo homer by William Contreras, his fourth.

The Padres scored twice in the fifth on Hosmer’s bases-loaded single. The Braves intentionally walked Manny Machado to face Hosmer, who produced his 22nd and 23rd RBIs.

Atlanta cut the deficit to 3-2 on Dansby Swanson’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The Padres made it 4-2 on Myers’ solo homer, his first of the year, in the sixth.

The Braves responded in the bottom of sixth with two outs. Ozzie Albies doubled and scored when Myers misplayed Adam Duvall’s fly to right field for a single. Dansby Swanson completed the rally with a three-run homer off Robert Suarez, his third, to put Atlanta ahead 6-4.

Three-run eighth carries Rays past Blue Jays

Manuel Margot and Francisco Mejia each had RBI singles in the eighth inning and Brandon Lowe followed with a run-scoring triple as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 on Friday night at St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Blue Jays took their fourth straight loss, spoiling a strong effort by starting pitcher Kevin Gausman.

Margot, who missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury, broke a 2-2 tie when his line drive between shortstop and third base drove in pinch runner Vidal Brujan. It was Margo’s 14th RBI in May.

Tim Mayza then took over for Gausman and got Wander Franco to ground into a double play. Mejia came on in as pinch hitter and singled home Taylor Walls to make it 4-2.

Lowe then hit his second triple of the night, scoring Mejia. He also tripled to lead off the second inning and scored on a fielder’s choice.

Tampa Bay reliever Jason Adam came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning for his first career save.

Gausman was strong through the first seven innings but ran into trouble in the eighth inning after the Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the inning Raimel Tapia singled home Vinny Capra.

Gausman (3-2) was unable to get an out in the eighth inning. He wound up charged with four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk. Gausman struck out eight.

Tapia had two hits, the only Toronto player to have a multiple-hit game.

Andrew Kittredge (3-0) shut down the Blue Jays’ rally to earn the win with one scoreless inning.

Early on, the game was a pitcher’s duel. Tampa Bay starter Drew Rasmussen held Toronto scoreless for the first five innings, but he was pulled after 5 2/3, having allowed three hits and one run while striking out one and walking one.

The Rays’ Mike Zunino hit an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game 1-1, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s run-scoring single in the sixth gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge.

Lowe and Zunino each had two hits for Tampa Bay.

Mariners pull out victory over Mets

Ty France scored the Seattle Mariners’ first run and delivered the tie-breaking RBI single in the eighth inning Friday night as the visiting Mariners edged the New York Mets, 2-1.

The Mariners, who played at Citi Field for the first time since the park opened in 2009, won for just the fourth time in 12 games this month. The Mets, who have yet to lose a series this season, have dropped two of three.

After a taut pitcher’s duel between the Mets’ Max Scherzer and the Mariners’ Marco Gonzales, New York’s Drew Smith (0-1) walked pinch-hitter Abraham Toro and Adam Frazier leading off the eighth. France followed with a single down the first base line to tag Smith with his first earned run of the season after starting with 13 1/3 scoreless innings.

The rally made a winner out of former Mets pitcher Paul Sewald (2-1), who struck out Starling Marte to strand two in the seventh before retiring all three batters he faced in the eighth. Sewald went 1-14 for New York from 2017-2020 but is 12-4 for Seattle.

Drew Steckenrider earned his second save with a perfect ninth.

The Mets built their lone run against Gonzales in the first, when Brandon Nimmo legged out an infield single, went to third on Marte’s double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Francisco Lindor.

Gonzales then walked Pete Alonso before striking out Eduardo Escobar and getting Mark Canha to hit into a fielder’s choice. The left-hander allowed only two runners beyond first base the rest of the way. He gave up five hits and walked three while striking out five over 6 2/3 innings.

Scherzer allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before plunking France, who advanced to third on a single by J.P. Crawford and scored on a single by Jesse Winker.

The Mariners loaded the bases with one out against Scherzer in the seventh, but he wriggled out of the jam by getting Steven Souza Jr. to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

Miguel Cabrera drives in two as Tigers top Orioles

Eduardo Rodriguez pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, Miguel Cabrera hit his 504th career home run and the host Detroit Tigers held off the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 on Friday.

Rodriguez (1-2) allowed five hits and four walks while striking out three to record his first win since signing with Detroit as a free agent. Will Vest, who entered with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, struck out Ramon Urias and Rylan Bannon for his first career save.

Cabrera had an RBI double along with his solo homer, while Spencer Torkelson had two hits and drove in a run.

Orioles starter Jordan Lyles (2-3) gave up four runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and fanned six. Baltimore’s Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander hit solo homers in the eighth inning.

Detroit took the lead in the third. Robbie Grossman drew a one-out walk, and Javier Baez hit into a fielder’s choice. Cabrera then ripped a double into the right-center-field gap to knock in Baez.

The Tigers chased Lyles with three runs in the sixth. Cabrera hit his second homer of the season, which barely cleared the left field fence. With two outs, Jonathan Schoop singled and Willi Castro doubled down the right field line, bringing in Schoop. Castro advanced to third on the throw home and scored on Torkelson’s infield single.

After setting down the first two batters in the seventh, Rodriguez walked Robinson Chirinos and Chris Owings. Andrew Chafin entered in relief, and Cedric Mullins reached on an infield single to load the bases. Chafin then struck out Jorge Mateo to snuff out the threat.

The Orioles jumped on Jacob Barnes in the eighth, homering on the first two pitches he threw. Mancini drilled his second homer of the season to left and Santander blasted his fourth to right. Baltimore loaded the bases later in the inning, but Alex Lange induced a Mullins popout on a 3-2 pitch to keep the score at 3-2.

Tigers closer Gregory Soto was pulled with one out in the ninth after he hit two batters with pitches and walked another. Vest then entered and recorded the dramatic save.

Astros smack 3 HRs, win 11th straight in rout of Nationals

The Houston Astros belted three early home runs and rode a strong starting pitching effort from Framber Valdez to win their 11th game in a row by beating the host Washington Nationals 6-1 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Jose Altuve’s solo shot and Yuli Gurriel’s two-run blast came in a five-run first inning. Yordan Alvarez homered in the third.

By then, Valdez was on his way to a stellar performance in what became the Astros’ fifth consecutive win by five or more runs — the last four of those on the road.

Valdez (2-2) lasted 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run and seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He notched his first victory since Opening Day.

Washington lost for the fourth time in its last five games. The Nationals didn’t score until the seventh inning on Alcides Escobar’s fielder’s choice grounder. That scoring chance stemmed from Keibert Ruiz’s leadoff walk.

Nelson Cruz finished with two of Washington’s eight singles and the team went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

It was the first meeting between the teams since the Nationals won Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. Houston manager Dusty Baker faced Washington for the first time since his time as manager of the Nationals ended after the 2017 season.

Alvarez’s blast went to center field, boosting the margin to 6-0 for his team-high 11th long ball of the season.

Washington starter Josiah Gray (4-3) made it through six innings, allowing all six runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Houston had only one hit after the third inning. Five of the team’s hits came in the first frame.

It was all about timely hitting for the Astros, with Alvarez and Gurriel each having two hits among the team’s seven. Houston left only three runners on base.

Brewers edge Marliins on bases-loaded walk

Jace Peterson drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning — the only free pass of the game — as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the host Miami Marlins 2-1 on Friday night.

Peterson drew the four-pitch walk from Anthony Bender, who inherited a bases-loaded, no-out jam from fellow reliever Tanner Scott (0-1). Christian Yelich, who started his career with the Marlins, scored the winning run.

Reliever Devin Williams (2-0) earned the win, pitching one scoreless inning.

Josh Hader pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save. He is the first pitcher in major league history to go 13-for-13 on save chances to start a season.

The Marlins have lost 10 of their past 12 games. Eight of those 10 losses have come by just one run.

Both starting pitchers were dominant.

Miami’s Pablo Lopez set a career high with 11 strikeouts, including nine on his changeup. He struck out Brewers shortstop Willy Adames three times.

Lopez allowed three hits, no walks and one run in seven innings, and his major league-leading ERA rose slightly from 1.00 to 1.05.

The Marlins fell to 5-2 when Lopez starts this season.

Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes was just about as good, allowing five hits, no walks and one run in seven innings. He struck out seven.

Kolten Wong homered for the Brewers. It was the 11th time in Wong’s career that he has hit a leadoff homer.

Jesus Aguilar bashed a solo homer for the Marlins.

Fever squander lead before topping Liberty in OT

Kelsey Mitchell scored 24 points for the visiting Indiana Fever, who blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter but made enough plays in overtime to outlast the New York Liberty 92-86 on Friday night.

Mitchell sank 8 of 22 shots and helped the Fever (2-2) win their second straight on a night when they shot 38.3 percent and committed 21 turnovers.

Victoria Vivians added 20 points and Indiana’s most clutch player in overtime was Danielle Robinson, who scored eight of her 17 in the extra session to cap a successful season debut.

NaLyssa Smith posted a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds while Queen Egbo grabbed 14 boards to help Indiana to a commanding 57-33 rebounding edge.

New York’s Sabrina Ionsecu led all scorers with 31 points, including a tying 3-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation. After being held to two points in Wednesday’s 33-point loss at Chicago, Ionescu shot 11 of 20 from the field and made five 3-pointers.

Betnijah Laney added 16 points and Stefanie Dolson finished with 12 for the Liberty (1-2), who shot 36.3 percent and committed 17 turnovers.

The Fever started the fourth quarter with a 58-48 lead and held a 74-69 edge with 1:14 left. After Mitchell hit two free throws with 20.2 seconds to go, Ionescu sank a 3-pointer from the left side off a pass from Dolson out of the low post with 14.4 seconds left.

In overtime, Indiana appeared to secure the game when Mitchell converted a three-point play with 1:57 remaining for a six-point lead. However, Laney hit two free throws and a jumper before Ionescu’s left-handed layup forged an 84-84 tie with a minute left.

Robinson then made a pullup jumper from the right elbow with 54.9 seconds left to give Indiana a 86-84 lead, and she snapped a 86-all tie by hitting two free throws with 24.9 seconds left.

The Liberty had a chance to tie or take the lead but with 19.2 seconds remaining, but Ionescu’s pass to Natasha Howard went out of bounds, and the Fever hit four free throws the rest of the way.

Brandon Drury’s 4 RBIs power hot Reds past Pirates

Brandon Drury drilled his team-leading seventh homer and drove in four while Mike Moustakas homered twice to power the suddenly hot Cincinnati Reds over the host Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-2, Friday night.

Cincinnati starter Tyler Mahle (2-4) overcame a leadoff homer to allow only two runs and five hits, striking out a season-high eight and walking one for the Reds, who won a season-best third straight. The Reds have won four of five from the Pirates and six of their last seven games overall.

After opening the season with 31 starts of under six innings for the first time in modern history, Mahle gave the Reds their second straight start of at least six innings.

The Pirates jumped out to an immediate lead over Mahle when Ben Gamel jumped on a 1-1 fastball and drilled it over the 21-foot fence in right for a leadoff homer.

Mahle settled down and retired the next eight batters, before Gamel singled to right with two outs in the third.

After two hitless innings from Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller (0-5), Tyler Naquin opened the third with a sharp line-drive double off the right field wall. Kyle Farmer followed with a run-scoring double to right, tying the game at 1-1. Farmer later scored on a TJ Friedl sacrifice fly to left to give the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Keller was charged with five runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two, taking his fifth loss in seven starts this season. Keller fell to 1-4 lifetime against Cincinnati, with a 7.36 ERA in 10 career starts.

Following Gamel’s single in the third, Ke’Bryan Hayes drove him home with the tying run on a double.

The tie game didn’t last long as Moustakas drilled his second homer of the season to right, a solo homer putting the Reds ahead, 3-2, in the fourth.

The Reds added to their lead in the fifth against Keller when Drury doubled home Naquin and Friedl for a 5-2 advantage. The hit snapped Drury’s 0-for-14 drought since a home run Monday night against Milwaukee.

Drury added a two-run shot to left in the seventh off Heath Hembree, and Moustakas followed one out later with his second homer of the game. The drive — estimated at 427 feet to right-center — gave Cincinnati an 8-2 lead.

Balanced-scoring Aces cruise to win over Dream

Six Las Vegas players scored in double figures Friday night as the Aces used the 3-point arc liberally and effectively to rout the Atlanta Dream 96-73 in College Park, Ga.

A’ja Wilson led the balanced attack with 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray and Riquna Williams each scored 14 points. Jackie Young added 13, while Dearica Hamby chipped in 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Las Vegas (3-1) connected on 47.1 percent of its field-goal attempts, including 16 of 35, 45.7 percent, from 3-point range. The Aces also collected 24 assists, 11 by Plum, and eight players contributed to the team total of 11 steals.

Aari McDonald came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points for Atlanta (2-1), but she also committed five of the Dream’s 19 turnovers. Rhyne Howard, the top overall pick in last month’s WNBA Draft, chipped in 13 points.

The Dream didn’t have the firepower to stay with Las Vegas, which never trailed and led by double figures for the game’s final 24:04. The Aces, who nearly hit the 100-point mark for the second time in four games, are averaging 90.8 points per contest.

Las Vegas wasted no time putting its stamp on the game. Plum had a hand in the Aces’ first 18 points. She hit two 3-pointers and a driving layup for starters, then assisted on the next 10 points. The Aces led 18-4 after Plum’s dominant stretch and took a 23-12 margin to the second quarter.

Atlanta drew within 25-20 just over three minutes into the second when Erica Wheeler drained a pullup jumper, but Las Vegas asserted itself for the half’s remainder. Young capped a 24-point outburst for the Aces over the final 6 1/2 minutes with a four-point play just 2.3 seconds before intermission for a 49-33 cushion.

Any thoughts of a Dream comeback disappeared when Williams drained a 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the third quarter to up the margin to a game-high 23 points at 64-41. Las Vegas led 69-52 after three.

Arike Ogunbowale scores 27 to lead Wings over Mystics

Arike Ogunbowale poured in 27 points to help the visiting Dallas Wings rally from a double-digit, first-half deficit to beat the Washington Mystics 94-86 on Friday.

The Wings (1-1) trailed by 15 points midway through the second quarter and by three at halftime before talking charge in the third quarter, when they outscored Washington 18-7 over the final six minutes to tie the game and, ultimately, draw away.

Dallas led 66-55 heading into the fourth quarter and expanded its advantage to 17 points on two technical free throws by Isabelle Harrison with 7:12 to play. The Mystics closed to within six points on three free throws by Ariel Atkins with 1:03 remaining but would get no closer.

All five starters for the Wings scored in double figures. Allisha Gray added 21 points for Dallas, with Harrison had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Kayla Thornton scored 12 points and Marina Mabrey hit for 10. Tyasha Harris had 10 assists for Dallas.

Elena Delle Donne led Washington with 20 points while Atkins had 19 as the Mystics (3-1) dropped their first game of the season.

The Mystics led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter before settling for a 29-19 advantage at the end of the period. Atkins ripped off 11 points in the game’s first five minutes to pace Washington while Mabrey scored seven of Dallas’ first 12 points.

Washington led 38-23 after Delle Donne’s 3-pointer at the 5:52 mark of the second period. But the Wings finally came to life, reeling off a 19-4 run to pull to within 42-41 on Gray’s 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining before the Mystics added a pair of free throws by Myisha Hines-Allen to go to the break ahead 44-41.

Ogunbowale led all scorers with 19 points in the half. Delle Donne had 15 points to pace the Mystics over the first 20 minutes, with Atkins adding 11.

Washington managed just 11 points in the third quarter, scoring less in the second and third periods combined (26 points) that it did in its 29-point opening quarter.
