Luis Severino, Yankees shut down Orioles

Jose Trevino blasted a three-run homer and Luis Severino allowed one run on one hit over six innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the host Baltimore Orioles to open a four-game series on Monday.

After the Yankees took a 1-0 lead on Giancarlo Stanton’s double that scored Anthony Rizzo in the third inning, Trevino provided the big blow an inning later.

Gleyber Torres singled to left to open the fourth. Joey Gallo then struck out before Torres took second on Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s infield single to shortstop.

Two pitches later, Trevino drilled rookie right-hander Kyle Bradish’s fastball off the right-field foul pole to clear the bases and extend the lead to 4-0.

The Orioles pulled to within 4-1 on the first of Anthony Santander’s two solo home runs, as he hit one to right field as a left-handed hitter in the fourth before clearing the left-field fence as a right-handed hitter in the ninth.

The Orioles’ other hit was a single by Rougned Odor in the seventh inning.

Josh Donaldson and Rizzo hit back-to-back solo homers in the ninth inning.

Severino (3-0) had seven strikeouts against just two walks to beat the Orioles for the second time this season. He allowed four earned runs on three hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings, picking up the win in the Yankees’ 12-8 victory on April 26.

Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga held the Orioles scoreless in the seventh and Chad Green took care of the eighth before turning it over to Aroldis Chapman, who closed it out in the ninth.

Bradish, making just the fourth start of his career, dropped to 1-2 after allowing four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Keegan Akin.

Akin allowed just one hit to go along with three strikeouts and a walk over 3 2/3 innings.

Donaldson had a game-high three hits, while Torres had two hits and two walks and Trevino had two hits for the Yankees.

Four-run second inning helps Marlins smoke Nationals

Sandy Alcantara retired the final 20 batters he faced, leading the host Miami Marlins to an 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

With his start moved up due to Jesus Luzardo being placed on the injured list on Sunday, Alcantara allowed just three hits, one walk and one run in eight innings, striking out four.

Alcantara (3-2) struggled early, requiring 43 pitches to complete two innings. But he needed just 57 pitches over the next six frames.

The Marlins trailed early on Monday but had a four-run second inning, led by Avisail Garcia’s solo home run.

Miami finished with a season-high 16 hits, including three each by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Bryan De La Cruz. All three of Chisholm’s hits were over 100 mph in exit velocity.

Garcia, Jorge Soler and Erik Gonzalez each had two RBIs for Miami.

Washington starter Aaron Sanchez (2-3) took the loss, allowing eight hits, three walks and four runs.

Miami allowed a first-inning run for the fourth straight game as three of Washington’s first four hitters singled. Cesar Hernandez got an infield knock, Josh Bell grounded a single just under the glove of Chisholm at second base and Yadiel Hernandez earned the RBI with a liner that deflected off shortstop Gonzalez’s mitt.

Alcantara escaped further trouble when Maikel Franco bounced into a bases-loaded force out at the plate and Lane Thomas struck out looking.

Garcia’s 402-foot homer got the Marlins going in the second, tying the score 1-1. Then, after Brian Anderson walked and De La Cruz doubled, Gonzalez smacked a two-run single. Jacob Stallings followed with a double, and Chisholm capped the rally with an RBI single for a 4-1 lead.

The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh. Soler then smashed a ball 117 mph to shortstop Dee Strange-Gordon, who couldn’t handle it as two runs scored on the single. A third run scored on the play as pitcher Victor Arano, backing up home plate, tried to cut down Soler at second.

Garcia capped the rally with an RBI single, giving Miami an 8-1 lead.

Washington closed the scoring with Thomas’ RBI single in the ninth off reliever Anthony Bass.

Harold Castro blasts tiebreaking HR in 9th as Tigers edge Rays

Harold Castro hit a tiebreaking, two-out homer in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers won their fourth straight game by edging the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 Monday night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

With the game tied at 2, Castro lifted an 0-1 fastball from Andrew Kittredge (3-1) deep to right-center for his first homer and the game-winning blow, making a winner of reliever Michael Fulmer (2-2).

Closer Gregory Soto allowed a single but retired Mike Zunino with a flyout to center field to shut down the Rays in the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

Jonathan Schoop swatted a two-run homer, and Willi Castro went 2-for-4. Miguel Cabrera collected a single to stretch his hitting streak to seven games.

A native of Tampa, Detroit starter Alex Faedo was strong over 5 2/3 innings in his third career start and first-ever in a big-league uniform in front of his family and friends. He allowed one run and four hits in the outing, striking out four and walking one in his 83-pitch effort.

For the Rays, Brett Phillips had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a homer, double, two runs scored and an RBI.

In his seventh start, Tampa Bay’s Corey Kluber yielded two runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out a season-high eight and didn’t issue a walk.

After Cabrera’s leadoff single in the fourth, Schoop barreled up an 88 mph sinker from Kluber that ran inside on the right-handed hitter. The long homer to left field, an estimated 404 feet, was Schoop’s third this season.

Leading off the sixth, Phillips launched a towering shot off Faedo’s 91 mph four-seam fastball, a majestic blast down the right-field line that caromed off the C-ring near the roof of the domed stadium. The ball bounced back into right field as the fleet Phillips sped around the bases.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch challenged the play, but the home-run call was upheld for Phillips’ third long ball.

Phillips legged out a hustle double in the eighth with Detroit playing its outfield deep, and a walk to Yandy Diaz and a wild pitch led to Wander Franco’s tying sacrifice fly.

Mystics look for revenge in early rematch vs. Wings

The Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings will already have a second matchup in this young season when they face each other on Tuesday at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

The Wings handed the Mystics their first loss of the season on Friday, taking a 94-86 victory in Washington, D.C., behind 27 points from Arike Ogunbowale and 21 points from Allisha Gray.

One positive note for the Mystics in the loss was that it featured the return of Alysha Clark. The 34-year-old forward missed all of the 2021 season after suffering a foot injury while playing overseas.

In her Washington debut, Clark tallied nine points, four rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of play.

“She’s just so diligent,” Mystics star Elena Delle Donne told the Washington Post. “Every day you see her showing up, bringing the same energy, the same focus. And there’s a lot of days and I’m sure a lot of pain and a lot of the things she was working through … Now we get to finally play. I’ve been wanting to play with AC for far too long now.”

Delle Donne has also eased back into the Mystics’ lineup this season. The former two-time MVP sat out the 2020 season due to COVID-19-related health concerns and battled a back injury last year. She’s played in three of the Mystics’ first four games this season, averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game.

The game Delle Donne missed was Washington’s first road game, at Minnesota, due to what the team called “load management.” According to Mystics coach Mike Thibault, the plan seems to be for Delle Donne to play in Dallas against the Wings, but rest during Friday’s matchup vs. the Atlanta Dream.

While Delle Donne is a go, the Mystics listed guard Natasha Cloud as questionable for Tuesday’s game. She is returning from health and safety protocol. To bring Cloud back on the active roster, the Mystics had to release rookie Katie Benzan.

The Wings have played — and won — another game since facing the Mystics last week. Dallas topped the New York Liberty 81-71 on Sunday behind 21 points from Ogunbowale.

“I would just say that’s the way the game came to me,” Ogunbowale said. “Personally, I didn’t score much in the first half, but my team held it down.”

In her fourth pro season out of Notre Dame, Ogunbowale is averaging 18.3 points per game.

Fellow Wings guard Tyasha Harris didn’t play against the Liberty and is questionable for Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury.

Court grants woman protective order against Rajon Rondo

An emergency protector order was granted by Jefferson County Family Court in Louisville on Friday, two days after the alleged incident occurred.

According to the woman’s court filing, per WDRB.com in Louisville, Rondo “became enraged” after she asked him to stop playing video games with a child in her home so the child could assist with doing the laundry.

After the child stopped playing, Rondo allegedly ripped the video game from the wall, destroyed several items in the home and left, saying to the woman, “You’re dead.”

Rondo allegedly returned to the home with a gun, demanding to see the children, but the woman didn’t let him back into the house. The children reportedly were “visibly upset and clearly scared that Rajon continued to brandish a gun.”

The woman then called former interim Louisville Metro Police chief Yvette Gentry, who reportedly came to the scene.

Per multiple media reports, the court order issued Friday against Rondo prohibits him from getting within 500 feet of the woman and the children and prevents him from trying to communicate with her.

According to ESPN, an NBA spokesman said the league is investigating the incident and is “in the process of gathering more information.” Rondo’s representatives didn’t reply to a request for comment, ESPN reported.

Rondo, 36, split the current season between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging a combined 4.8 points, 4.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 39 games (one start).

A four-time All-Star, Rondo earned championship rings with the Boston Celtics in 2008 and the Lakers in 2020. He has career averages of 9.8 points, 7.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 957 games (733 starts) for the Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers and Cavaliers.

A Louisville native, Rondo played at the University of Louisville before Boston selected him with the 21st overall pick in the 2006 draft.

Avs, Panthers remain popular bets in second round of playoffs

They posted the best records in their respective conferences during the regular season. With one round now complete in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers continue to perform well in the betting market, too.

The Avalanche (+175) remain favored to win the Stanley Cup, with BetRivers reporting Monday that for championship futures, the Avalanche lead the way with both 18.1 percent of the total handle and 21.4 percent of the total tickets.

The Panthers (+385) were second in line, garnering 11.3 percent of the total money and 11.1 percent of the total tickets. But standing in the Panthers’ way are their in-state rivals, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning (+800) have earned the third-biggest share of the tickets (7.6 percent) and the fifth-largest share of the handle (5.8 percent).

The Panthers and Lightning will square off in one of four second-round Stanley Cup playoff series, beginning Tuesday. The Avalanche will face the St. Louis Blues, the Carolina Hurricanes will play the New York Rangers and the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames will renew the Battle of Alberta against a playoff backdrop.

At BetMGM, the Avalanche are the biggest favorites to win their first-round series at -350. The Panthers-Lightning series is the tightest of the four, with Florida the narrow favorite at (-145) and Tampa Bay sitting at +120.

The higher-seeded teams, of course, are favored to win their respective Game 1s at home. They are also apparently receiving most of the big action. Over at DraftKings, 93 percent of the handle is on the Panthers to win Game 1 against the spread (-1.5) even though they’re getting just 48 percent of the total bets. Similarly, the Flames were receiving 45 percent of the bets but 84 percent of the handle for their Game 1 Wednesday against the Oilers.

Colorado is also the favorite to win the Stanley Cup at BetMGM (+200) and DraftKings (+190) with Florida the second favorite at both books (+375 at BetMGM, +380 at DraftKings).

CEO: T1 staying in NA after blockbuster trade with Cloud9

0

T1 CEO Joe Marsh said Monday that the organization would remain based in North America after a recent Valorant trade with Cloud9 led fans to speculate that T1 might set up shop in South Korea.

T1 acquired Son ‘xeta’ Seon-ho and coach Yoon ‘Autumn’ Eu-teum from Cloud9 in exchange for retired American player Rahul “curry” Nemani. The deal went through Sunday shortly after Cloud9’s first match of the Valorant Champions Tour Stage 2 Challengers.

Because T1 has esports teams in both South Korea and North America, the move led some to think that the organization was building an all-Korean Valorant squad so they could franchise in that region instead.

Marsh said on social media Monday that that wasn’t the case.

“Our plan is to stay in North America,” Marsh wrote. “After meeting with (Joshua ‘steel’ Nissan) and our GM we felt that the success we had with a mixed nationality roster … (was the) best path forward with us since we have scouts in both US and Korea and gives us a larger pool to pull from.”

T1 released their previous Valorant head coach, David Denis, on Friday.

Oregon commit Mookie Cook to play LeBron James in movie

Five-star Oregon commit Marquis “Mookie” Cook, one of the top prospects in the Class of 2023, will star as a young LeBron James in an upcoming movie about James’ time as a high school basketball star.

“Shooting Stars” will be a film adaptation of a book by the same name co-authored by James and Buzz Bissinger that tells the story of James and his friends playing for a high school national championship. It is set for a 2023 release on Peacock.

Cook committed to Oregon on March 31, choosing the Ducks over Gonzaga and Kentucky. He is the fifth-ranked prospect in the class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Like James, Cook plays small forward. He is listed at 6-foot-7, not far off from James’ 6-9.

Another up-and-coming prospect will star alongside Cook. Scoot Henderson, who plays in the G-League Ignite and will be eligible for the 2023 NBA Draft, will play the role of James’ friend Romeo Travis.

QB Taisun Phommachanh transfers from Clemson to Georgia Tech

After three seasons as a backup quarterback with Clemson, Taisun Phommachanh announced his intention to stay in the Atlantic Coast Conference but move a bit further south by transferring to Georgia Tech.

Phommachanh backed up Tigers starters Trevor Lawrence (2019-20) and D.J. Uiagalelei (2021) the past three seasons. In 13 total games for Clemson, he completed 22 of 48 passes for 204 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, adding 150 rushing yards and one score.

He came out of Avon (Conn.) Old Farms School as the No. 4 dual-threat QB in the 2019 recruiting class and No. 168 in the Rivals 250.

Phommachanh entered the transfer portal in December, and he will come to the Yellow Jackets with three years of eligibility remaining.

Georgia Tech’s new offensive coordinator Chip Long and quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke were looking to rebuild the quarterback depth chart. Phommachanh joins one of last year’s two primary quarterbacks, Jeff Sims, with Jordan Yates having transferred to Sam Houston State.

Phommachanh’s announcement was the second transfer win of the day for the Yellow Jackets, who also added pass catcher E.J. Jenkins.
