Luka Doncic, Mavs demolish Suns with 33-point blowout in Game 7

Luka Doncic recorded 35 points and 10 rebounds and the Dallas Mavericks dismantled the host Phoenix Suns with a convincing 123-90 victory in Game 7 to claim a spot in the Western Conference finals.

Spencer Dinwiddie poured in 30 points off the bench and Jalen Brunson added 24 as fourth-seeded Dallas steamrolled the top-seeded Suns. The Mavericks led by as many as 46 points while reaching the finals in the West for the first time since winning the 2011 NBA Finals.

Dallas will face the third-seeded Golden State Warriors in the conference finals. Game 1 is Wednesday night in San Francisco.

“I don’t know what to say but this was an amazing team win,” Doncic said afterward. “Everybody was locked in, everybody was playing as hard as they can. We didn’t take one play off. This is an incredible team win.

“I’m going to enjoy this win tonight, and tomorrow we will think about Golden State.”

Devin Booker scored 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting in his first career Game 7 for the Suns, who won an NBA-best 64 games. That output also set a franchise record.

Booker missed his first nine field-goal attempts before sinking a jumper with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Starting anchors Booker, Chris Paul (10 points, 4-of-8 shooting) and Deandre Ayton (five points, 2-for-5) totaled 26 points on combined 9-of-27 shooting. Overall, Phoenix shot 37.9 percent from the field, including 12 of 34 from behind the arc.

“They did a good job of getting the ball out of my hand and trapping,” Booker said. “I’ve always said I’m not the person who is going to try to shoot over eight people, I’m going to try to make the right play. I missed shots early and missed the open ones I got.”

The Mavericks were the first road team to win in the seven-game series. Dallas lost its first three visits to Phoenix by an average of 19 points, including a dismal 110-80 setback in Game 5.

After falling behind 2-0 and 3-2 in the series, Dallas won the final two games by an average of 30 points.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd didn’t care whether the winning margin was 33 or one.

“We’re not looking at the blowout. We just came in and executed our game plan,” Kidd said. “I think they came out and played it as just another game and played it as a high level. Offensively and defensively, we were active.”

The Mavericks shot 56.8 percent from the field and made 19 of 39 from 3-point range in the wire-to-wire victory. Doncic was 6 of 11 from behind the arc and Dinwiddie made 5 of 7.

Cameron Johnson scored a team-high 12 for Phoenix, which sustained a painful loss after reaching last season’s NBA Finals before falling to the Milwaukee Bucks.

“We basically played the worst game of the season tonight,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “That group has a lot of character and integrity. I know how bad they wanted it. We just could not execute, could not make a shot early, and that messed with us a little bit and Dallas played their tails off from start to finish.

“From my standpoint, I did not have us ready to play in a Game 7.”

The home fans booed the Suns off the court at halftime when the score was 57-27. Phoenix’s halftime total matched the output of Doncic, who was 9 of 12, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

Dinwiddie added 21 in the half on 7-of-10 shooting and 4 of 5 from behind the arc.

Meanwhile, the Suns’ trio of Booker (0 of 7), Ayton (1 of 4) and Paul (0 of 4) were 1 of 15 for six points in the half.

Doncic scored 12 points in the first quarter as the Mavericks built a 27-17 lead.

Doncic (15) and Dinwiddie (13) combined for 28 points in the second quarter as Dallas outscored Phoenix 30-10.

After halftime, Dallas scored 15 of the first 20 points to stretch the lead to 40 at 72-32 with 7:44 left in the third quarter.

Dinwiddie’s final 3-pointer, coming with 48.3 seconds left in the stanza, gave the Mavericks a 92-50 lead and they remained well ahead in the fourth quarter while finishing the startling wipeout win.

The Mavericks also halted a seven-game losing streak in Phoenix dating back to a victory early in the 2019-20 season.

Tiger Woods: ‘I’ve gotten a lot stronger’ ahead of PGA Championship

0

Tiger Woods played a nine-hole practice round Sunday afternoon at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., ahead of this week’s PGA Championship.

The 15-time major winner told reporters on site that he felt his surgically repaired leg and foot were feeling stronger than when he played the Masters a month ago.

“I’ve gotten a lot stronger since the Masters,” Woods told reporters. “We went back to work on Tuesday (after the Masters). Monday was awful. I did nothing and Tuesday was leg day. So, we went right back after it.

“We started ramping up a week or so ago, played a little bit more golf, and it was good. Everything is better.”

After a gruesome one-car accident in February 2021 left him unable to walk for three months, Woods made his return to golf at the Masters and made the cut. It ended up being his worst career Masters finish — he finished in 47th place at 13 over par — and it was clear that walking the course was the bigger challenge for Woods than hitting shots.

Woods has made clear that he will pick and choose which tournaments he will play going forward rather than return to playing the PGA Tour full-time. He is three major titles shy of tying Jack Nicklaus’ career record of 18.

Woods won the PGA Championship the last time it was held at Southern Hills, in 2007.

His caddie, Joe LaCava, also told reporters that he sees Woods’ strength returning.

“Hundred percent I see him stronger,” LaCava said. “I just think the endurance is there now. I don’t think he’s getting quite as tired as quickly. I see more endurance more than anything.”

“Other than the fact that he won here 15 years ago, I think it’s the stamina and endurance thing that excites him the most.”

Paul Casey, Sungjae Im out of PGA Championship

0

Two more top-25 players in the Official World Golf Ranking withdrew Sunday from this week’s PGA Championship.

Paul Casey of England and Sungjae Im of South Korea backed out of the field of the year’s second major, with Casey still battling a back injury and Im testing positive for COVID-19.

Russell Knox of Scotland and Scott Stallings entered the field as replacements for Casey and Im, respectively. Joel Dahmen is now the first alternate should any other player withdraw before Thursday’s first round at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Casey has not been able to compete since placing third at The Players Championship in March. He showed up to the WGC-Match Play fighting back spasms and forfeited all of his scheduled matches in the initial group stage of the event. He was a late withdrawal from the Masters the next month.

Im reportedly tested positive for COVID Thursday before he was set to play in a tournament on the Korean Tour. His withdrawal indicates that he would not be able to travel back to the U.S. in time for the tournament due to South Korea’s COVID protocol.

Im is ranked No. 20 in the world. Casey is No. 24.

World No. 25 Harris English withdrew from the field last Friday. English has not played on the PGA Tour since mid-January and is still recovering from a hip surgery he underwent in February.

Six-time major winner Phil Mickelson also dropped out of the field last week. Mickelson, who would have been the defending champion, has not returned to the public eye since receiving backlash for comments made about a nascent rival golf league backed by Saudi financiers.

WTA roundup: Iga Swiatek claims title in Rome, extends streak to 28

World No. 1 and top-seeded Iga Swiatek continued her winning ways on Sunday, defeating No. 9 seed Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

The 20-year-old from Poland captured her fifth straight WTA Tour final in winning her 28th consecutive match overall. Swiatek joined Serena Williams in becoming the second player to win four or more WTA 1000 titles in a single season after dispatching the Tunisian in one hour, 22 minutes.

“Proud of myself. At the beginning of the tournament, I didn’t know it would be possible to keep up the streak and with all the wins,” Swiatek said. “I’m pretty happy I did it really step by step and I just focused on the right things because I think it led to all the success this week.

“Yeah, for sure it was a long path for me since the beginning, but I’m really proud of myself and my team.”

Swiatek was overcome by emotion after Jabeur’s final backhand sailed into the net. She tossed her racquet aside, fell to her knees and placed her face in her hands.

Swiatek now will set her sights on the French Open, where she’ll attempt to capture her second Grand Slam title. She won in Paris in 2020.

Swiatek snapped a personal two-match skid against Jabeur despite registering just one ace on Sunday. She won 22 of 32 first-serve points, however, and converted five of nine break points.

Jabeur saw her 11-match winning streak come to a halt on Sunday. She was bidding for her second straight WTA 1000 title after her win last week in Madrid.

“I mean, I did everything that I can,” Jabeur said. “I made her visit all the corners of the court. I know that Iga plays much better when you open the court, so maybe I should have stayed more in the middle and let her lose the point. I don’t know. Definitely I did my best. The thing is, I bring many more shots in that point. She deserved to win, for sure.”

Swiatek was quick to credit her opponent after the match.

“I want to congratulate Ons because she had such a good run on the clay court,” Swiatek said. “You have shown fight, spirit, so much variety that it’s really nice to have you on tour. Your tennis is different and your tennis is really interesting for women’s tennis I think.

“It was so nice to play here and to be in Rome. … Today, I’m going to celebrate with a lot of tiramisu. No regrets.”

Internationaux de Strasbourg

Eighth seed Magda Linette of Poland joined countrywoman Swiatek in the winner’s circle Sunday when she defeated Russian Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 6-0 in the first round at Strasbourg, France.

Linette smashed seven aces and never faced break point as she took care of business in just 67 minutes.

Harmony Tan of France also advanced by eliminating Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-1. Tan saved five of seven break points she faced while converting six of her eight opportunities to break Stosur’s serve.

Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem

Second seed Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia opened the first round at Rabat, Morocco, with a 57-minute win over Spain’s Irene Burillo Escorihuela 6-2, 6-1.

Tomljanovic converted six of eight break points and won 17 of 20 first-service points (85 percent).

Swedish ninth seed Rebecca Peterson was less fortunate. Petra Marcinko of Croatia downed Peterson 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 in two hours and 11 minutes. Marcinko came from behind 5-4 in the third set by winning the final three games.

Frank Schwindel’s go-ahead RBI helps Cubs edge D-backs

Patrick Wisdom homered and doubled and Frank Schwindel drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a single as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix.

Rafael Ortega also homered for Chicago, which won its second straight series and finished 4-2 on its six-game Western road trip.

Scott Effross (1-1) picked up the win with an inning of scoreless relief while Rowan Wick earned his fourth save. Left-hander Justin Steele started for the Cubs and allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out a career-high 10.

Christian Walker had two hits and a run scored and Cooper Hummel tripled for Arizona, which lost its second straight game. Ian Kennedy (2-2) suffered the loss.

Chicago needed just two pitches to take a 1-0 lead when Ortega, celebrating his 31st birthday, smashed a 428-foot homer into the bleachers down the right field line off Arizona starter Humberto Castellanos, his first home run of the season.

Wisdom made it 2-0 when he led off the second inning with his sixth homer of the season, a 414-foot line drive to left.

Arizona sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth and pushed across two runs to tie it, 2-2. Jordan Luplow led off with a walk and advanced to second one out later on a single by Walker. After Pavin Smith struck out, Daulton Varsho singled to right to drive in Luplow with Walker advancing to third. Walker then scored on a fielding error by shortstop Ildemaro Vargas.

Chicago then took a 3-2 lead in the ninth off Kennedy. Wisdom led off with a line double that one-hopped the fence in left-center and came around to score on Schwindel’s soft liner down the right field line.

Walker led off the bottom of the ninth with a line single to left. After Wick replaced Effross, Smith blooped a single to left. Varsho popped out to third and David Peralta, pinch-hitting for Nick Ahmed, then grounded into a game-ending double play.
