Giants sock three homers, outlast Rockies

Mike Yastrzemski hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning, Curt Casali went deep twice and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6 on Monday night in Denver.

Casali finished 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.

San Francisco’s Thairo Estrada and Darin Ruf had two hits each, John Brebbia (1-0) pitched a shutout inning for the win, and Camilo Doval earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth. The Giants have won 11 straight against the Rockies dating back to last August.

Ryan McMahon homered among his two hits while C.J. Cron, Yonathan Daza and Randal Grichuk had two hits each for Colorado.

Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela left after two scoreless innings due to a lower back strain.

The game was tied with two outs in the ninth when Yastrzemski hit his third of the season into the second deck off Daniel Bard (1-2).

Colorado took the lead in the first inning on Brendan Rodgers’ RBI single off San Francisco starter Alex Wood, but the Giants tied it up in the third when Casali hit a solo homer off Ty Blach.

San Francisco grabbed its first lead in the fifth. Estrada led off with a walk, Ruf singled and Casali followed with his second homer of the night and third of the season to make it 4-1.

The Rockies rallied in the bottom of the inning. Wood got the first two batters before Connor Joe and Daza singled and Charlie Blackmon doubled to drive in a run.

Dominic Leone replaced Wood and gave up an RBI single to Cron to make it 4-3.

McMahon tied it when he led off the sixth inning with his fourth homer of the season.

Wood allowed three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Giants loaded the bases in the seventh on Ruf’s double, Casali’s single and a walk to Austin Slater. Ruf scored on an error at third by McMahon, and Yastrzemski’s sacrifice fly scored Casali to make it 6-4.

Colorado answered in the bottom of the inning. Daza walked with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Cron’s single. After Rodgers walked, McMahon singled to tie it.

Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela leaves game with injury

Colorado Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela left Monday’s start against the San Francisco Giants with a lower back strain, the team announced.

Senzatela, 27, tossed two scoreless innings against San Francisco and tied a season high with three strikeouts before departing with a 1-0 lead.

The right-handed Senzatela (2-2, 4.55 ERA) made his seventh start of the season and second straight against the Giants.

In six major league seasons, Senzatela has a 38-37 record with a 4.85 ERA.

Astros starter Jake Odorizzi stretchered off with leg injury

Houston Astros starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi needed to be taken off the field at Fenway Park on a stretcher during Monday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Odorizzi suffered a left leg injury when he collapsed while running off the mound to cover first base.

The right-hander was 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in six starts entering the night.

Odorizzi is in his second season with the Astros after also playing for the Kansas City Royals (2012), Tampa Bay Rays (2013-17) and Minnesota Twins (2018-20). He was an All-Star in 2019.

Mets, Cardinals bring some history into series-opening doubleheader

With thunderstorms expected throughout Monday afternoon and evening, the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals had to wait longer than expected to see if the fireworks between the teams would continue.

After Monday’s scheduled opener of a four-game series was rained out, the Mets are slated to host the Cardinals in a straight doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The first game will begin at 3:10 p.m. EST and will be followed immediately after by the nightcap.

Neither team announced the order of its Tuesday starters following Monday’s rainout, though the Mets confirmed right-handers Taijuan Walker (1-0, 3.00 ERA) and Trevor Williams (0-2, 5.73 ERA) will start in some order.

Right-hander Miles Mikolas (3-1, 1.49 ERA) and left-hander Steven Matz (3-3, 6.40 ERA) are lined up to start for St. Louis.

The weather provided both teams an extra chance to rest after eventful games Sunday. The host Mets left the bases loaded in the ninth inning of an 8-7 loss to the Seattle Mariners, while the iconic St. Louis trio of Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols made some unique bits of history as the Cardinals routed the visiting San Francisco Giants, 15-6.

The tandem of Wainwright and Molina became the winningest battery in history by earning their 203rd victory together while Pujols made the first mound appearance of his 22-year career by allowing four runs in the ninth inning.

While the sight of Pujols pitching elicited some laughter, nobody was chuckling April 27, when a three-game series between the Mets and Cardinals in St. Louis ended with a benches-clearing skirmish.

After Cardinals left-hander Genesis Cabrera hit J.D Davis in the left foot in the top of the eighth — the fifth hit by pitch absorbed by the Mets in the series and the major league-leading 19th time they’d been plunked in 2022 — New York right-hander Yoan Lopez went up-and-in with his first pitch to Nolan Arenado in the bottom half.

Arenado began yelling at Lopez before the dugouts and bullpens emptied.

“When you come up top like that and jeopardize someone’s career and life, yeah, I take exception to that,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said.

Arenado was ejected along with first base coach Stubby Clapp, who tackled Mets first baseman Pete Alonso during the scrum. Alonso was hit in the helmet the night before by Kodi Whitley’s pitch.

“I’ll let them handle their players,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said. “I know our player got hit in the head and went to first base.”

Walker earned the win May 12, when he allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings as the Mets beat the Washington Nationals, 4-1. Williams, who is filling in for the injured Tylor Megill in the Mets’ rotation, last pitched on May 11, when he relieved Megill and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in an 8-3 loss to the Nationals.

Mikolas earned the win May 11, when he gave up one run over seven innings as the Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles, 10-1. Matz took the defeat May 12 after surrendering three runs over 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 loss to the Orioles.

Walker is 1-1 with a 2.52 ERA in four career starts against the Cardinals. Williams is 4-6 with a 5.64 ERA in 19 games (14 starts) against St. Louis.

Mikolas is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three games (two starts) against the Mets. Matz is 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in two starts against New York, for whom he played from 2015 through 2020.

Luis Robert’s blast in 10th lifts White Sox past Royals

Luis Robert hit a two-out, two-run home run in the 10th inning and the Chicago White Sox defeated the host Kansas City Royals 5-3 in the first game of a five-game series Monday night.

The two clubs will play a day-night doubleheader Tuesday.

Ryan Burr (1-1) pitched the ninth for the win.

Kansas City’s Scott Barlow (2-1) came on in the ninth and retired the White Sox in order. He then retired the first two batters in the 10th, keeping designated runner Josh Harrison at second. However, Robert’s 425-foot blast changed everything.

Liam Hendriks picked up his 10th save by striking out all three batters in the bottom of the 10th.

Johnny Cueto made a spectacular return to Kansas City, pitching six scoreless innings for the White Sox, allowing just two hits. It was Cueto’s White Sox debut after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Charlotte earlier Monday.

It was Cueto’s first appearance at Kauffman Stadium since he pitched a complete-game victory over the New York Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series as a member of the Royals. He came to the Royals just before the trade deadline in 2015 for three players. He starred down the stretch and went 2-1 in the postseason for Kansas City.

Kansas City starter Brad Keller also pitched well, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings.

The White Sox got on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Vaughn. Adam Engel led off with a flyball to left-center that seemed to confuse the Royals outfielders as it dropped between left fielder Andrew Benintendi and center fielder Michael A. Taylor for a double. Engel then stole third and scored on Vaughn’s flyout to right.

Robert led off the fourth with an infield single, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games. He scored when Yasmani Grandal lined an 0-2 pitch into the bullpen in right field.

The Royals tied it in the eighth, with two runs coming on a double by Whit Merrifield, who missed a home run by a few feet. He went to third on the throw home and scored on an RBI single by Benintendi.

Six-run first carries Rangers past Angels

Eli White singled twice in a six-run first inning, Jonah Heim homered and the Texas Rangers earned a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in Arlington, Texas.

After a slow start, Rangers starter Jon Gray (1-1) rebounded, and he gave his club a 5 2/3-inning outing. The right-hander was charged with four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. He picked up his first win as a Ranger.

Joe Barlow pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth inning for his seventh save in as many chances.

Most of the action came in the first inning, as the teams combined for nine runs, with the Rangers scoring six times.

Based on how the Angels attacked Gray early in counts, it looked as if it would be a short stint for the Texas starter.

Taylor Ward singled on the first pitch of the game, and he advanced to third on Mike Trout’s single. Shohei Ohtani blistered an RBI double to deep center. Brandon Marsh’s two-out, two-run double to left gave the Angels a three-run first-inning lead that didn’t last long.

Los Angeles starter Noah Syndergaard (3-2) didn’t make it through the first inning.

The Rangers scored six times on five hits, chasing Syndergaard after two-thirds of an inning and 42 pitches. Syndergaard was charged with six runs (four earned) before handing the ball off to Jaime Barria, who gave his club 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Rangers sent 11 to the plate in the big inning.

White singled to open the inning for Texas. He stole second before Marcus Semien walked, then scored on Corey Seager’s single to right. Adolis Garcia followed with an RBI double, and Kole Calhoun’s sacrifice fly made it 3-3.

Heim reached on first baseman Jared Walsh’s error, which gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead. After Sam Huff’s two-out single and Brad Miller’s walk loaded the bases, White’s single off Barria capped the rally.

Andrew Velazquez’s RBI single in the fourth inning closed the Angels’ deficit to 6-4, but Heim got the run back with a solo shot off Mike Mayers in the seventh.

Freddy Peralta, Brewers blank Braves with two-hitter

Freddy Peralta racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts through seven shutout innings as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a six-game homestand with a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Peralta (3-1) surrendered just two hits and walked one to lead the Brewers to their third win in four games. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA over his past five starts.

On a night when both pitching staffs were in control, Milwaukee scored the lone run on a sixth-inning wild pitch by Ian Anderson (3-2).

If the Braves had any hopes of coming back, they were quickly squashed by Devin Williams and Josh Hader, who were dominant out of the bullpen.

Williams struck out the side in the eighth and Hader followed suit in the ninth for his major-league-leading 14th save. Brewers pitchers retired Atlanta’s final 17 hitters in order to secure the win.

Atlanta lost for the third time in four games.

In the Milwaukee sixth, Hunter Renfroe doubled with one out, went to third on Omar Narvaez’s groundout to first and scored on Anderson’s errant delivery with Tyrone Taylor at the plate.

Renfroe had the only extra-base hit of the game and finished the night 1-for-2 with a walk. Luis Urias went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Brewers, who managed only five hits.

Anderson turned in his second quality start of the season, as he allowed the one earned run in six innings. He gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out three.

Braves reliever Spencer Strider came on and went two innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three.

Marcell Ozuna had a single and a walk and Austin Riley also singled to account for the Braves’ only two hits on the night.

The back half of Atlanta’s lineup struggled, as the bottom five hitters combined to go 0-for-15 with 11 strikeouts.

Willson Contreras, Wade Miley lead Cubs past Pirates

Willson Contreras’ grand slam highlighted an eight-run first, and Wade Miley yielded just one hit over seven strong innings, as the Chicago Cubs snapped a five-game home skid with Monday night’s 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Chicago led 4-0 when Contreras hit the 100th home run of his career, well into the left-center field bleachers off Bryse Wilson to clear the bases and essentially secure his team’s season-high third consecutive victory. Ian Happ and Yan Gomes each had three hits with an RBI for the Cubs.

Meanwhile, Miley (1-0) was brilliant after allowing three runs and five walks in three innings at San Diego in his Cubs’ debut on May 10. The veteran left-hander didn’t yield a hit until Michael Chavis’ two-out single in the fifth, and he struck out six without a walk.

A day after being no-hit but still winning 1-0 over Cincinnati, the Pirates’ offensive struggles continued while recording just three hits. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Rodolfo Castro each singled in the eighth for Pittsburgh, which has totaled six runs and been shut out twice while losing three of its last five.

Pirates starter Dillon Peters (3-1) faced just seven batters in the first. He was charged with five runs while giving up four hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Wilson, meanwhile, lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs — three earned — with eight hits and two walks.

Contreras opened the bottom of the first with a double to right-center. He scored on a double by Happ, who came home on Gomes’ single. Andrelton Simmons later delivered an RBI infield single in his first Chicago at-bat, and Gomes scored on a bases-loaded walk to Rafael Ortega to give Chicago a four-run lead.

Contreras followed with his second hit of the inning and his fourth career grand slam.

Xander Bogaerts’ blast helps Red Sox pull away from Astros

Xander Bogaerts homered during Boston’s three-run eighth inning and Enrique Hernandez and J.D. Martinez both went 2-for-4 as the Red Sox defeated the visiting Houston Astros 6-3 on Monday night.

The hosts broke open the see-saw game against Houston reliever Hector Neris (1-2), ultimately earning their third win in four games.

Hernandez doubled down the left field line and traded places by scoring the go-ahead run on Martinez’s double into the left-center gap two batters later. Bogaerts added key insurance with a towering two-run homer over the Green Monster.

Trevor Story also homered for Boston.

Matt Strahm (2-1) won in relief, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He struck out three and walked none.

Hansel Robles tossed a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Michael Brantley (2-for-4) and Chas McCormick (2-for-3, home run) had multiple hits for the Astros.

Astros starter Jake Odorizzi collapsed as he came off the mound to cover first base on the grounder that ended the fifth inning, and he was stretchered off the field. The team later announced that he was dealing with lower left leg discomfort.

Odorizzi threw five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. He struck out four.

The Red Sox broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.

Hernandez hit a leadoff single and Martinez followed with a one-out single to right. After Bogaerts walked, McCormick couldn’t catch Alex Verdugo’s fly ball to shallow center, and Hernandez scored on a RBI forceout of Martinez at third.

Houston knotted the score in the fifth on McCormick’s leadoff homer into the final section of Green Monster Seats in center field.

Boston moved on top again in the bottom of the fifth when Franchy Cordero scored on a passed ball after doubling to left.

In the sixth, Houston’s Yuli Gurriel tied the score at 2-2, sending a sacrifice fly to deep center. Brantley’s double and a walk to Alex Bregman earlier in the frame chased Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock, who worked five-plus innings of three-hit, two-run ball.

Boston relievers Jake Diekman and John Schreiber combined to strand a runner on third, ending the inning before a 1-hour, 38-minute rain delay.

The Astros jumped ahead in the seventh as Jose Altuve’s ground-ball single through the middle scored Jason Castro, who had doubled.

Houston’s first lead was short-lived as the Red Sox tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on Story’s first homer of the season at Fenway Park. It was his second long ball overall.

Yusei Kikuchi delivers as Blue Jays beat Mariners

Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi pitched six scoreless innings, Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman hit solo home runs and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 6-2 Monday night.

Kikuchi (2-1), making his first start against his former team, allowed one hit and three walks while striking out six in the opener of a three-game series.

Eugenio Suarez hit a solo homer for Seattle.

Seattle right-hander Chris Flexen (1-6) allowed three runs, six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out seven.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a single in the third to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Bichette hit his fourth homer of the season with one out in the first inning.

Chapman hit his sixth homer of the season with two out in the second.

Kikuchi retired 11 in a row after walking Ty France in the first before Jesse Winker led off the fifth with a double.

Penn Murfee replaced Flexen with one out in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on base through walks. The right-hander struck out Danny Jansen before yielding Raimel Tapia’s RBI single.

Trevor Richards replaced Kikuchi in the seventh and allowed Eugenio Suarez’s seventh home run of the season — and 200th of his career — with one out. After two walks, Yimi Garcia took over and allowed pinch hitter Adam Frazier’s single that loaded the bases. The inning ended on a shallow flyout and a groundout.

Bichette singled and Guerrero walked to open the bottom of the seventh against Wyatt Mills. They advanced on a wild pitch and scored on pinch hitter Alejandro Kirk’s single.

Toronto’s Ryan Borucki pitched a perfect eighth.

Bichette had an RBI single against Roenis Elias in the bottom of the eighth for his third hit of the game.

Ross Stripling allowed one run in the ninth on a walk, Santiago Espinal’s error and Frazier’s RBI single before Adam Cimber recorded to outs to earn his second save of the season.

Toronto put left-hander Tim Mayza (left forearm inflammation) on the injured list Monday and recalled left-hander Andrew Vasquez from Triple-A Buffalo.

Seattle placed right-hander Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list and selected left-hander Elias from Triple-A Tacoma.
