Will Brittney Griner be released?

0

On Tuesday, Russian official media posted the first photo of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Brittney Griner in detention since she was seized at the airport last month on suspicion of possessing a cannabis-filled vape pen.

The two-time Olympic basketball champion was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport after returning from a two-week break from playing in New York at the end of February.

Her specific arrest date is unknown, and neither are her current whereabouts. According to reports, she was supposed to perform on February 20, and she may have been on an aircraft that arrived at the airport on February 17.

Griner, who is a member of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, has spent the winters in Russia for the past seven years, earning more than three times her WNBA pay. She last played for UMMC Ekaterinburg on January 29, before the league went on a two-week hiatus in early February for the FIBA World Cup qualification competitions. Andrei Kozitsyn, a mineral entrepreneur who is one of Putin’s wealthiest cronies, is a supporter of UMMC Ekaterinburg, reports say.

She is not the only American female athlete who has flown to Russia to supplement her income. This winter, over a dozen WNBA players, including league MVP Jonquel Jones, Courtney Vandersloot, and Allie Quigley of the champion Chicago Sky, were playing in Russia and Ukraine. The WNBA announced on Saturday that except for Griner, all the players had left both nations.

She is the only one left there and this has triggered outrage on social media.

Griner’s detention comes at a historically perilous time, as Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result, the US and its Western allies have turned their backs on Moscow, imposing a slew of sanctions and public censure. Some people have speculated that Russia was using Griner as a bargaining chip in the battle.

The WNBA has released a statement saying it will help Griner get home, although it is unclear what is being done. President Biden is aware of her case, according to the White House.

Your Brain Can Shrink If You Had Covid

0

Researchers discovered Covid-related brain damage months after infection, including shrinking in size equivalent to a decade of typical aging in the region linked to scent. The changes were connected to a reduction in cognitive function. The findings show that the virus has a significant influence on the central nervous system.

More research is needed to determine whether the evidence from the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging at the University of Oxford indicates that Covid-19 will aggravate the burden of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, which cost an estimated $1.3 trillion in the year the contagion began.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is usually regarded as a respiratory pathogen that infects the lungs. On the other hand, taking a restricted perspective of it misses a slew of neurologic consequences that manifest during the acute phase of the illness, such as confusion, stroke, and neuromuscular issues.

Other side effects, such as poor concentration, headaches, sensory abnormalities, depression, and even psychosis, can last for months as part of a symptom cluster known as extended Covid.

Neuroscientist Gwenaelle Douaud and team used the world’s largest magnetic resonance imaging database to analyze alterations in the brain. They looked at alterations in the brains of 785 UK Biobank participants (aged 51—81) who had their brains examined twice, including 401 cases who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection between their two scans, with an average of 141 days between diagnosis and second scan, and 384 controls.

Comparing the two groups, the researchers found significant differences in grey matter thickness and tissue contrast in the frontal lobes of the brain (orbitofrontal cortex) and parahippocampal gyrus, changes in tissue damage markers in the regions functionally associated with the primary olfactory cortex, and a reduction in overall brain size.
A subsequent scan was taken about 38 months later. Between the two time points, the infected participants showed a greater average cognitive deterioration.

After eliminating the 15 individuals who had been hospitalized, these imaging and cognitive long-term effects remained.
These primarily limbic brain imaging findings could indicate in vivo hallmarks of illness progression via olfactory pathways, neuroinflammatory processes, or sensory input loss due to anosmia.

Whether or not this negative impact can be partially reversed, or whether or not these consequences will last in the long run, has to be researched further.

According to Joanna Hellmuth, a neurologist and assistant professor at the Memory and Aging Center, University of California, the research underlines growing evidence that brain-based alterations can occur following a SARS-CoV-2 infection, even in people who did not require hospitalization.

Future research attempts will help to understand if these alterations are clinically meaningful, and linked to specific neurological disorders following Covid.

President Biden Congratulates all Women on International Women’s Day!

0

Statement by President Joe  Biden on International Women’s  Day

Every person deserves the chance to live up to their full God-given potential, without regard for gender or other factors.   Ensuring that every woman and girl has that chance isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s also a strategic imperative that advances the prosperity, stability, and security of our nation and the world.   Yet too often, in too many places, women and girls face obstacles that limit their possibilities and undermine their participation in economic, political, and social life.   These barriers have been exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately affected women’s labor force participation, elevated the burden on both paid and unpaid caregivers, and increased the incidence of gender-based violence.

On International Women’s Day, we recognize the achievements of women and girls in the United States and across the globe, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and recommit ourselves to the work that remains to deliver the full measure of equity, dignity, and opportunity due to all women and girls.

It’s why we’ve invested in child care and supported women’s economic opportunity through the American Rescue Plan; fought to reauthorize and strengthen the Violence Against Women Act; addressed the scourge of sexual assault in the military through sweeping military justice reforms; signed the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act into law; launched a whole-of-government effort to protect reproductive rights; advanced women’s participation in conflict prevention and resolution, stability and security; and created a Gender Equity and Equality Action Fund to promote the economic security of women around the world.     And it’s why I’m proud that my FY 2023 Budget will request $2.6 billion for foreign assistance programs that promote gender equality worldwide, more than doubling the amount requested for gender programs last year.

On this day and every day, let us recognize that all of us have a better future when women and girls can reach their full potential – and together, let’s renew our efforts to advance dignity, equality, and limitless possibilities for all.

Russian oil imports banned by Biden, gas prices to increase

0

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden struck at the heart of the Russian economy as he said that he would ban the import of Russian oil and gas. This move comes as Russia continues to attack Ukraine, following moves to cripple Russian banks as well as its oligarchs. The ban also includes liquified natural gas (LNG), other oil products and coal.

Biden said that the nation was targeting “the main artery” of the Russian economy. By refusing to accept Russian oil at U.S. ports, the nation had dealt “another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine.” New purchases will stop immediately. However, U.S. companies, who have existing contracts, have 45 days to wind down deliveries of Russian oil and gas imports.

Biden said that his administration had made the decision after consultations with its close allies as well as partners in Europe. He added that there were allies who might not be “in a position to join them.” The U.K. spoke of phasing out oil and gas from the country by the end of 2022. However, the European Union is more reliant on Russian oil and gas imports and would not join the U.S. and the U.K. in the ban of energy from Russia.

Biden also said that defending freedom had a cost and this cost would apply to the citizens in the nation as well. However, he promised to do “everything” that he could to minimize oil and gas costs in the country. He also said that decision had costs and that “Putin’s war” was “already hurting American families at the gas pump.”

Biden mentioned that removing environmental regulations are not the way forward to boost domestic energy production. He said that oil and gas companies have leases for millions of acres of land in the U.S. They had also received permits to drill but had not used them for production.

Although oil and gas has been released from National Strategic Reserves, oil and gas prices continue to rise and could reach all time high levels. The Biden administration is in talks with officials from Venezuela and has asked Saudi Arabia to ramp up its oil production. Qatar is also mediating between the U.S. and Iran regarding the sanctions imposed earlier, on the country. If they reach a breakthrough there could be an easing in the oil crisis as thousands of barrels will be added from Iran to the world’s supplies.

Google to acquire Mandiant, Why is the acquisition important?

Google, the world’s most popular search engine, is acquiring Mandiant, a name that is unfamiliar to many except perhaps to those in tech circles. However, Mandiant recently came into prominence in the nation as they were the company that found out what has been termed as the Solar Winds hack. The company announced its acquisition by Google in a press release on March 8.

Mandiant announced in the release that it had reached a “definitive agreement” that it would be acquired by Goggle for $23 per share and it would be an all cash transaction valued at roughly $5.4 billion which would include the company’s net cash. The offer price is at a 57 percent premium with reference to its price on February 7, 2022.

Mandiant is a leader in frontline expertise as well as threat intelligence. It has over 600 consultants who concentrate on security breaches and 300 intelligence analysts. This strong workforce is the reason why Google planned to acquire the company as it moves forward to expand its cloud business which is far behind Amazon and Microsoft.

Google Cloud has committed to building in native security in its business. This latest acquisition will strengthen its security offerings with services such as consultations on cyber security as well as detecting threats that might undermine the company’s security.

Google Cloud’s CEO Thomas Kurian addressed the acquisition in a blog post mentioning the frequency and severity of cyber security threats and the challenges that had to be overcome quickly. He said that the cloud had led to “digital transformation” and that the acquisition of Mandiant would offer a “robust set of services” for Google Cloud customers through
advisory services
threat detection and intelligence insights
automation tools
response tools
testing and validation
managed defense.

Mandiant started operations in 2004. In 2013, it was acquired by FireEye. It was spun as an independent company after FireEye sold its product business. The acquisition of Mandiant by Google is expected to be closed before the end of 2022.

Putin Threatens to Shut Down Gas Pipeline to Europe as Us Bans Russian Oil Imports

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to shut down his gas pipeline, which supplies over half of Europe’s gas, if there is a boycott of Russian fossil fuels, despite warnings that this would send oil prices above $300 per barrel, allowing him even more money to spend on his ruthless Ukraine campaign.

The West has so far imposed a series of economic sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine but had not yet targeted oil or gas. After the US pressed its European allies to consider blocking Russian oil imports over its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has fueled fears of an energy war by threatening to shut down a major gas pipeline to Germany.

In a statement on Monday, Alexander Novak, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister revealed that rejecting Russian oil could lead to catastrophic consequences for the world market. Russia was fully complying with its responsibilities, but it would be absolutely within its rights to react against the European Union after Germany blocked the certification for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline last month, he said.

On Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pushed back against the idea of prohibiting Russian oil and gas imports, saying that such a step would jeopardize Europe’s energy safety and that imports from Russia were vital to Europeans’ daily life.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, appeared to ally himself with Germany’s Scholz in backing away from proposals to put an oil embargo on Russia during a press conference on Monday.

There are increasing calls for the United Kingdom to increase North Sea production, while Germany is being pressed to open up its historic gas resources. Despite Europe’s net-zero goals, experts believe that countries should increase nuclear output and explore depending more on coal-fired power plants in the short run.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that reducing Russian oil and gas imports will be a “step-by-step procedure.”

According to the International Energy Agency, Europe could cut Russian gas imports by more than half in a year, but this would necessitate a slew of quick actions, ranging from replacing gas boilers with heat pumps to dramatically increasing LNG imports.

EU leaders may agree at a summit this week to phase out the bloc’s reliance on Russian fossil fuel imports without setting a deadline, reports said. However, countries are split on whether or not to put immediate sanctions on Russia’s energy supplies. The notion has been rejected by Germany, the world’s largest customer of Russian crude oil.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Sister Randi shares crypto version of Twisted Sister song

(Photo: Facebook Randi)

Mark Zuckerberg’s sister Randi Zuckerberg has released a music video that has been given a lot of credit while others praised it. Randi said that she laughed at all the comments it evoked as it was a parody. The video is two minutes and 21 secs long and Randi is seen singing with her friends in Central Park in New York City to the tune of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”

Zuckerberg said she sang this rock classic as a rallying cry for the women of web3. She added that she wanted this musical video to be a funny way to introduce crypto jargon to the novice. She got several million views.

This is not her first video on crypto. Randi has also parodied Adele’s “Hello, it’s me” earlier in February this year. Despite all this, Randi said that she will keep spending her money for making videos on crypto. She wants to make crypto fun. Many people have praised the video and are looking forward for more videos.

I’ve been thinking about a fun way to explain all the “jargon” of crypto to newcomers. All the acronyms and new words can feel intimidating for beginners. WAGMI (“we’re all gonna make it”) is the rallying cry for crypto and it reminded me of a song I sang on Broadway in the 80s rock musical, Rock of Ages. So please enjoy a two minute lesson in crypto lingo 101 that speaks to the spirit of sisterhood and power of women in
Web3, while I rock out to some Twisted Sister 2.0!!!

Monetary Grants to Podcasters for Video Version of Their Shows by YouTube

According to reports, YouTube is providing individual shows $50,000 and podcast networks up to $300,000, to produce filmed episodes and other video-based content. It is also offering certain content creators sums of money to convert their audio podcasts into video formats to augment streaming on its platform.

YouTube is purportedly providing money to podcasters in order to encourage them to develop video versions of their shows. This comes after the business dropped hints on many occasions of its plans to encourage more podcaster traffic to the streaming service.

Despite being primarily a video site, YouTube also carries a number of notable podcasts, including the H3 Podcast, Full Send Podcast, and Logan Paul’s Impaulsive. It even reportedly aided the rise of the contentious Joe Rogan Experience, which Spotify acquired exclusive rights to in 2020.

People with knowledge on the matter have reportedly said that YouTube is giving podcast networks $50,000, $200,000, and $300,000 in “grants” to assist them to acquire the technology they need to transform their content to a more visual format. Podcasters can apply for “grants” from YouTube to make videos, including filmed versions of their shows.

The terms and conditions that come with these grants with regards to required or ongoing content output are not yet known. YouTube meanwhile enjoys a natural lock-in as a platform for video distribution.

Some podcasts are already available on YouTube, but it has not pursued episodic material as actively as Spotify and other (usually audio-focused) sites have. However, there have been signals of change, such as the appointment of executive Kai Chuk to head up the podcasting strategy. YouTube’s paid Premium accounts in Canada are no longer required to play audio in the background.

This strategy should come as no surprise. More large podcast partnerships have been signed by Amazon and Spotify, while Apple’s Podcasts app remains a critical home for many programs.

While YouTube’s subsidies will not guarantee any exclusives, they will encourage artists to make podcasts available on the site, as well as fans to explore YouTube.

Video podcasts are not new, but it would be interesting to watch how this content is presented in YouTube apps in the future.
