Abramovich, Deripaska and other Russian oligarchs sanctioned by the U.K.

0

On Thursday, March 10, the U.K. government released a list of Russian oligarchs who have been sanctioned and the list includes Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich and his one time business partner Oleg Deripaska. The others, according to the press release, include Igor Sechin and people who are said to belong to Putin’s inner circle. Their collective worth is roughly £15 billion.

Foreign secretary Liz Truss announced a total asset freeze as well as a travel ban on 7 Russian oligarchs as their businesses and wealth is closely associated with the Kremlin. They will be banned from traveling to the U.K. and no citizen or company of the country may conduct business with them.

The 7 on the list include
Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea F.C., worth roughly £9 billion. He also has stakes in Evraz, a giant steel company and Norilsk Nickel.
Oleg Deripaska, worth roughly £2 billion, former partner of Abramovich, with stakes in En+ group.
Igor Sechin, who is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Rosneft.
Andrey Kostin, who is the chairman of VTB bank.
Alexei Miller, who is the CEO of Gazprom, a huge energy company based in Russia.
Nikolai Tokarev who is the president of Transneft, a company owned by Russia
Dmitri Lebedev who is the chairman of Bank Rossiya.

The U.K. government will enforce the Economic Crime Bill next week. This will let the government act further and faster to simplify the process of applying sanctions on individuals who are helping or have helped the Kremlin.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that there could be no “safe havens” for the people who supported Putin and that they would ruthlessly pursue those who enabled “the killing of civilians, the destruction of hospitals and illegal occupation of sovereign allies.

Nadine Dorries, who is the Culture Secretary, tweeted that Chelsea F.C. would be allowed to operate and it will be given a “special license.”

Opposition leader Keir Starmer, who is on a visit to Estonia where U.K. troops are based, said that they had called for the sanctions, weeks ago and that they needed to go “further and faster.”

Kanye West continues to attack Pete Davidson in newest video of Eazy

Kanye West has been in the news from the past few weeks for his childish and animated social media attacks against Pete Davidson, the boyfriend of his ex wife Kim Kardashian. The newest video released on the Game’s official YouTube channel continues to depict violence against Pete, though this time his face is blurred. It features a weird red monkey, beating a blurred figure, who resembles Pete and wears a sweatshirt with the word Skete across it. This is a weird nickname coined by the rapper for the Saturday Night Live (SNL) star.

In the clip, an animated version of the rapper walks in front of an ambulance. Kanye raps the same lyrics that he used in the clay animation video, where decapitated and buriec an animated version of Pete. The lyrics are “God saved me for that crash. Just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s a**.”

In this video, a red monkey beats an animated figure, whose face is blurred but who resembles the SNL star. In case any one has doubts about the identity of the figure, the figure is featured wearing a sweatshirt that reads “Skete.” Kanye has been referring to Kim’s boyfriend Pete as Skete in several social media posts. The video shows the creepy, red monkey punching the animated version of the person resembling Pete, several times.

The video continues to feature weird, red monkeys that are seen along with animated versions of the Game and Kanye. One of these red monkeys is the driver when both of them ride in a car.

Kanye has been attacking Pete Davidson initially through posts and weird memes. He also posted memes against his friends. However, the recent videos are filled with violence, although animated versions of the people involved are depicted in them.

Several fans and celebrities are disturbed by the escalation of the harassment from posts and memes to violent videos–two of which have been recently released by Kanye West. Pete reportedly found the earlier video to be ridiculous according to a source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight while Kim was “furious” according to another source who spoke to PEOPLE.

First Person To Receive Pig Heart Transplant Dies

0

Surgeons had successfully inserted the heart of a pig that was genetically modified into a human being in a first-of-its-kind operation. The surgery saved his life after he had previously been ruled ineligible for a heart transplant.

Bennett, who had a significant heart condition, accepted to get the experimental pig’s heart after being turned down for a human heart on many occasions.

Two months after the pioneering surgery, the first human to undergo a pig heart transplant, David Bennett Sr. of Maryland, passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

On January 7, the failing heart of the Maryland resident was replaced with that of a genetically modified pig at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

However, it is uncertain whether the foreign organ caused his death. At the time of his death, there was no evident cause established, a hospital spokesman said.

Because physicians had not completed a comprehensive assessment, hospital officials refrained to say further on the cause of death. Bennett’s death “devastated” the hospital’s personnel, according to Dr. Bartley Griffith, the surgeon who performed the transplant. Dr. Griffith said that Bennett had been a brave and gallant patient who wrestled his way till the end.

Bennett’s son expressed gratitude to the hospital for offering the last-ditch trial, noting that the family hoped it would aid future efforts to alleviate the organ scarcity.

At the time, specialists at the medical facility confirmed that the experimental surgery, which took seven hours to perform, demonstrated that a heart from a genetically modified animal can work in the human body without being rejected right away.

In the wake of the continuous organ shortage situation, an experimental surgery was carried out. Bennett’s transplant was initially judged successful after doctors discovered he was breathing on his own three days after the operation while linked up to a heart-lung machine.

Pig hearts are structurally comparable to human hearts, but they are not identical, as one might expect. However, they can be made to work by simply plugging them in. The pig heart utilized in the operation was gene-edited to remove a sugar known to cause organ rejection from its cells.

Bennett’s condition was life-threatening, and no other alternatives could rescue him, so the FDA approved the procedure under a “compassionate use” emergency authorization.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was the site of the world’s worst nuclear catastrophe nearly 36 years ago. It lost power after its power grid source was damaged, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

Kuleba tweeted the plant was relying on reserve diesel generators with the capacity to power it for 48-hours, after which the cooling of spent nuclear fuel will halt, raising the possibility of “imminent” radiation leaks.

“Putin’s barbaric war puts entire Europe in danger. He must stop it immediately,” tweeted Kuleba, who also called on the global community to demand that Russia impose a cease-fire to allow for repairs.

The international community continued to target Russia’s economy. The European Union agreed Wednesday to bolster its sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion, including measures targeting senior Russian officials and oligarchs, as well as restrictions on the maritime sector and several Belarussian banks.

Pentagon press secretary John F. Kirby added late Tuesday that the Pentagon did not “believe Poland’s proposal is a tenable one.”

“The prospect of fighter jets ‘at the disposal of the Government of the United States of America’ departing from a U.S./NATO base in Germany to fly into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance. It is simply not clear to us that there is a substantive rationale for it,” according to the statement from Kirby, adding that the United States would “continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies about this issue and the difficult logistics.

The United Nations refugee agency said Wednesday more than 2.2 million people have fled Ukraine. More than half have gone to Poland.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were due to meet Thursday in Turkey to discuss the situation. Dmytro Kuleba said he will propose a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin.

Senate passes $50 billion bipartisan bill to overhaul the USPS without cutting back on deliveries

0

In a good show of bipartisanship, the Senate passed the U.S. Postal Service Relief Bill, on Tuesday. It was passed with an overwhelming majority. The loss-making U.S. Postals Service (USPS) will receive roughly $50 billion in financial aid over 10 years. Future retirees would have to enroll in Medicare, an insurance plan that is government funded. The bill has been sent to President Biden’s desk for him to sign it into law.

The Postal Service Relief Bill had been supported by President Biden, the Democrats, several Republicans, the Postal Service, its workers’ unions and many others.

The final vote at the Senate was 79-19. Last month, the House of Representatives had passed the bill in a bipartisan manner as well with a 342-92 vote. The bill is called the Postal Reform Act. It has dropped an earlier mandate that required the USPC to cover health costs of its workers years in advance, which led to huge expenditure.

Dropping covering future health costs as well as enrolling its workers in Medicaid is expected to save roughly $50 billion in the next decade, according to the House Oversight Committee. The legislation also says that the USPC has to create an online dashboard that has both local as well as national delivery time data.

There will be no cut back on deliveries as of now, nor will there be privatization of some services. However, the ending of the requirement of the the UPSC to finance health care benefits of workers ahead of time for the next 75 years is a major step forward. No private company or federal agency had to face this obligation.

Many Americans depended on the USPS during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, officials had warned that the service would run out of cash in about a couple of years unless Congress took action.

Chick Schumer, a Democrat from New York and the Senate Majority Leader said that the post office “usually delivers for us, but today we’re going to deliver for them.”

Sen. Rob Portman , Republican from Ohio, who was one of the major crafters of the the bill said that it was not a bailout as the agency was not getting any new funding.

A leader in a time of crisis: Justin Trudeau to help overcome Europe’s problems

0

On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada would stand with Europe as his country was talking similar steps to combat oil and gas issues. He spoke at a joint press conference with leaders whom he met including Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the U.K. as well as Dutch Prime Mark Rutte, on Monday. He is visiting Europe and meeting its leaders this week. He also met the Queen.

https://twitter.com/ukraine

He mentioned that Europe and other countries had realized that Russia was no longer a partner on whom they could rely on for energy. He said that Vladimir Putin had broken “a trust.” He said that they would be there to support Europe as they along with other nations of the world moved “beyond Russian oil” as well “beyond fossil fuels” and added “more renewables” in their “mix.”

He also mentioned that it was important to move away from Russian fuels not only due to the impending crisis as the Ukraine-Russia conflict continued but also beyond it. He said that “Russia’s unreliability as a trading partner” should be remembered in the future as well.

As the invasion of Ukraine by Russia continues, Justin Trudeau announced sanctions against 10 new people who were prominent leaders close to Putin, on the same day. He said that the list was compiled by opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is in jail in Russia. Trudeau added that the sanctions had “put increased pressure on Russia’s leadership” and the sanctioned individuals included those who were in “Putin’s inner circle.”

On Tuesday, at a military base in Latvia, Trudeau said that he was extending the military mission of his country in the Baltics to help NATO allies deter additional military aggression from Russia. Canada’s involvement in Operation Reassurance was set to end next year, before he announced its extension.

Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that any attack on a NATO ally would be though it was an attack on all the NATO allies, when they were asked about the future; if Russia encroached on a country beyond Ukraine. Stoltenberg mentioned that the aim of additional military presence in countries who belong to the NATO alliance was to prevent further war.

Justin Trudeau also said, “NATO has never been more united and determined than we are now.”

Will Brittney Griner be released?

0

On Tuesday, Russian official media posted the first photo of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Brittney Griner in detention since she was seized at the airport last month on suspicion of possessing a cannabis-filled vape pen.

The two-time Olympic basketball champion was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport after returning from a two-week break from playing in New York at the end of February.

Her specific arrest date is unknown, and neither are her current whereabouts. According to reports, she was supposed to perform on February 20, and she may have been on an aircraft that arrived at the airport on February 17.

Griner, who is a member of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, has spent the winters in Russia for the past seven years, earning more than three times her WNBA pay. She last played for UMMC Ekaterinburg on January 29, before the league went on a two-week hiatus in early February for the FIBA World Cup qualification competitions. Andrei Kozitsyn, a mineral entrepreneur who is one of Putin’s wealthiest cronies, is a supporter of UMMC Ekaterinburg, reports say.

She is not the only American female athlete who has flown to Russia to supplement her income. This winter, over a dozen WNBA players, including league MVP Jonquel Jones, Courtney Vandersloot, and Allie Quigley of the champion Chicago Sky, were playing in Russia and Ukraine. The WNBA announced on Saturday that except for Griner, all the players had left both nations.

She is the only one left there and this has triggered outrage on social media.

Griner’s detention comes at a historically perilous time, as Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result, the US and its Western allies have turned their backs on Moscow, imposing a slew of sanctions and public censure. Some people have speculated that Russia was using Griner as a bargaining chip in the battle.

The WNBA has released a statement saying it will help Griner get home, although it is unclear what is being done. President Biden is aware of her case, according to the White House.
