Pence calls out Trump indirectly, says, ‘Apologists of Putin’ are not GOP

0

In a speech, in New Orleans, on Friday, former vice president of the U.S. Mike Pence touched upon several issues including the need to move away from the 2020 elections to calling out “apologists for Putin” in the GOP, whom he believes should not have space in the party. His latest speech shows how much he has distanced himself away from former president Trump.

In his speech with top donors who contribute to the Republican Party, he spoke up against those who had not forcibly condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russia under President Vladimir Putin. Excerpts from his speech said that he questioned where the Russian tanks would be, if NATO had not increased the borders of freedom.

He also forcefully said that there was no room in the GOP for “apologists for Putin.” He also said that there was only room for “champions of freedom.” It must be noted that the speech was closed to reporters.

Although Pence reportedly never mentioned the former president by name, he used language that directly pointed to words that were described by the GOP leader to describe Putin, one of which was “smart” and mentioning the comment that said that an attack would have never occurred on his watch, language that has been used by Trump recently.

Mike Pence is reportedly laying the groundwork for a possible presidential bid in 2024, as Trump keeps dropping hints of a potential comeback, especially when he addresses large crowds of his supporters.

Pence reportedly said that elections were about the “future” and that his fellow Republicans could win if they remained united around a future optimistic vision that was based on the party’s “highest values.” He mentioned that “yesterday’s battles” would not win future elections.

The one issue in which he joined Trump and other Republicans was to blame President Biden for the war in Ukraine by saying that “weakness” aroused “evil” and the “magnitude of evil that was sweeping across Ukraine speaks volumes about this president. “

It is unsurprising that he criticized the present president as that is what opposition parties do around the world; to stay relevant and to energize their voter base.

Movie Review- Lincoln’s Dilemma (3/10)

Lincoln’s Dilemma (3/10)

by Tony Medley

4-part series

TV-PG

This movie is a continued effort to ignore the palpable fact that a predominantly white nation went to war to free black slaves. It starts out with a slap in the face by comparing the January 6 canard (when the only fatalities were the cold-blooded killings of two unarmed white female Trump supporters, one a veteran, by DC cops), to the Civil War.

The POV of this film seems to be that Lincoln was a reluctant opponent of slavery and only prevailed because of the influence of Frederick Douglass (voiced by Leslie Odom Jr.), whom he only met twice, and black soldiers, to wit: Narrator (Jeffrey Wright): “As the Civil War raged into its fourth year, mounting casualties meant increased reluctance among whites to serve in the Union Army. The North’s enormous supply of manpower no longer looked inexhaustible. So whites gradually began to accept the necessity of African American soldiers.” And said David Reynolds, who is identified as the author of  Abraham Lincoln in his Times, “In April of 1864 the confederacy was becoming more and more angry because African American troops from the north were really truly proving themselves to be vital to the northern military.” In fact, the Union Army was 90% white. Approximately 2,128,000 men served in the Union Army and 1,940,000 were white. At least 600,000 Union soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing in the war (probably many more) and 90% of them were white but that fact is always ignored.

Worse, the research is sloppy. Just as an example, it shows several photographs of the day of the Gettysburg Address, but there is only one photo extant that includes Lincoln. The film shows that photo but fails to identify the hatless man who is Lincoln (the far better  Abraham Lincoln  on the History channel shows the picture and identifies Lincoln). Since I have seen the picture, I knew who he was out of the hundreds in the picture but if you aren’t familiar with it, you are clueless.

Speaking of the Gettysburg Address, Bill Camp, who voices Lincoln, gives an unenthusiastic, bland rendering of the speech and, given the counterfactual POV of this film, I can’t believe that it was not done intentionally.

There are more absurd statements, like from James Oakes, identified as a “historian” at CUNY, “It (the South) was quite possibly the largest, wealthiest slave society in the history of the world.” Larger and richer than Rome? Slavery was a part of life in ancient Egypt. Greece, too; even Aristotle accepted it as “natural and necessary.”

Here is a list of some of the people interviewed (have you ever heard of any of them?):

Bryan Stevenson Founder Equal Justice Initiative

Christopher Bonner historian U Maryland

Sean Wilentz, Historian, Princeton

Ted Widmer, historian CUNY

Chandra Manning, Historian, Georgetown

David Reynolds, Author Abe: Abraham Lincoln in his times

Kate Masur, Northwestern

James Oakes CUNY

Jelani cobb journalist.

Well, you get the picture. If you watch this series you wouldn’t have any idea that white people had much to do with freeing the slaves and that Lincoln was ambivalent, which is nonsense.

Sending money to Mexico becomes cheaper as Walmart announces fee reduction

On Thursday Walmart announced that it would reduce the fee charged by the company to send money to Mexico. This will make it easier for customers who send remittances from the U.S. Millions of customers would benefit as the retailer relaunches its Walmart2Walmart Mexico program, which will be powered by Rio Money Transfer.

Customers will be able to send money from any of the big box retailer’s stores across the nation to any of its stores in Mexico. The company also said that the transfer would take place through the Walmart2Walmart program.

Walmart has said that it would charge $2.50 for each transaction. According to the company, this cost is half the cost when compared to charges by other companies.

In a statement, Julie Unger, who is the vice president of Financial Services at Walmart, said that the retailer was excited to offer its customers a new way of sending money to their loved ones who lived in Mexico “at an incredibly low price.”

The VP added that their strategy of providing a “low-cost fee” was an added commitment that Walmart had made to continue to improve its customers’ “financial well-being” all over the world.

Walmart first launched the money transfer service in 2016. However, it was suspended in 2018 as the retailer looked at ways and means to lower prices as well as to improve the infrastructure, in order to increase the number of remittances between the two countries.

In 2021, as remittances to Mexico increased by more than 27 percent, the Bentonville, Arkansas based retailer decided to relaunch its earlier program. Its large network of stores across the nation and also in Mexico will facilitate a quick and inexpensive way to send money across the two countries.

Walmart has always enabled its customers to use its multiple services as it offers quality items at affordable rates. By relaunching its Walmart2Walmart program, the giant retailer can also benefit from cross border payments as financial transactions are growing rapidly.

Movie Review Abraham Lincoln (9/10)

Abraham Lincoln (9/10)

by Tony Medley

3-episode series.

TV-14

Maybe the best and most accurate telling of Lincoln’s life ever made. Graham Sibley is a dead ringer for Honest Abe and the script uses the actual words of Lincoln and his debate adversary, Senator Steven Douglas.

The film tells more about Abe’s youth and upbringing than generally known. It covers his time as a state legislator and then as a successful attorney. It is probably the most accurate and understandable telling of his romance with Mary Todd Lincoln (Jenny Stead), who is generally mis-judged based on her later looks and behavior after the assassination. Instead, here we see her as a much sought-after young woman, and the film shows the closeness between the two throughout his Presidency. If only for this, this is a film to be seen, but there is so much more here.

Superbly directed by Malcolm Venville from an excellent script by Rebecca Sue Haber (1 episode), Sundi Lofty (1 episode), and Frederick Rendina (3 episodes), it easily seques into his becoming a nationally known politician. But best of all, it captures his brilliance and how he stood alone in his conduct of the Civil War and his graciousness in handling disparate personalities. One of the highlights is Sibley’s moving delivery of the Gettysburg Address, probably the greatest speech in American history.

It shows how he had to suffer through the maladroit handling of the Union army by Gen. George McClennan (Sven Ruygork, whom you might recognize as the actor in the commercial who is constantly flubbing his lines on Manhattan Island) and Gen. George Meade (Nicky Rebello) who failed to follow up the victory at Gettysburg and end the war there by letting Lee’s army escape.

The film is enhanced by commentary by Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of the fine book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln,” a must read for anyone interested in Lincoln and the Civil War.

Venville shows the brilliant balancing act Abe traversed to both save the Union and free the slaves. This film captures what an amazing man he was, the best America has produced. History Channel.

Melania Trump calls NYT report on her $50,000 a table high tea ‘inaccurate’

0

On Thursday, a popular news outlet had reported that a fundraiser that would feature former First Lady Melania Trump had been scheduled for April would be canceled due to action taken by state regulators on the company that was hosting the event with her, in Florida. The charity had not properly been registered in order to collect contributions. Melania slammed the outlet for its “inaccurate” reporting

On Thursday, the New York Times reported that Mrs. Trump had announced an event called “Tulips and Topiaries”, late January. The event was to be held at an undisclosed location in Naples, Florida and was a ticketed event with a VIP table costing approximately $50,000. The event would feature “an elaborate flower garden with tulips” along with “tea and bubbles” as per the Times’ report. The money collected would be used to provide scholarships for those children who had emerged from foster care.

The Times reported that the event had to be called off as the charity had not registered with the Sunshine State. It said that Whip Fundraising, the company organizing the event had not completed registration as a charity, until the state officially began an investigation. The state requires that certain organizations who ask for donations, have to register as a charity with them.

On Friday, the Office of Melania Trump tweeted that the event had not been canceled. It had been postponed to December 4, 2022. Another tweet from her office also said that they “captured the attention” of many more people due to the “New York Times’ inaccurate reporting” and now required a “larger venue.”

The March 4 tweet also thanked the “incredible supporters of foster care children.”

The head of Whip Fundraising, Brad Keltner said that he had been advised that he need not register with the state and that he had not broken any rules, according to the Times. However, the registration process began after there was a state probe into the event and he began working on it.

He said that the state of Florida did not shut them down and that it was an internal decision that was made as they had an overwhelming response that they had been unprepared to handle, echoing what was said by the Office of Melania Trump.

Kim Kardashian removes West from Instagram, Twitter, day after LA judge grants “single status”

0

Kim Kardashian will no longer use the last name West on her social media. She dropped the moniker from her Instagram and Twitter, as seen on Friday morning. The reality star received a barrage of encouragement from her millions of followers. She dropped this part of her name after a judge from Los Angeles restored her “single” status; after a divorce hearing on Wednesday.

She had applied for a divorce from rapper Kanye West in February 2021. Kim Kardashian remains single, while other issues such as child custody as well as property have to be resolved between both the billionaires.

Kim Kardashian recently moved on from her relationship with the rapper to a new one with Pete Davidson, who is a part of Saturday Night Live, in which she is reportedly very happy. Kanye had tried to woo her back with messages and a truckload of flowers on Valentine’s day. He has also taken several swipes with memes and offensive lyrics and names at her boyfriend Pete.

Kim, on the other hand, had earlier filed documents saying that Kanye had posted a lot of “misinformation” on social media about her and Pete. She said that the rapper’s attack on both of them gave her “emotional distress.”

According to a report in Rolling Stone, on February 23, Kim told the court that termination of their “marital status” would help the rapper to accept that their “marital relationship” was over. The filing also stated that they could then “move forward on a better path” that would be more peaceful as they co-parented their children. Kim and Kanye have four children together from their marriage.

A source told PEOPLE that Kim had considered herself “single for a while” and that she was relieved that she was also officially single, now. She was also looking forward now and wanted to finalize all aspects of the divorce.

The source also mentioned that 41-year old Kim was in a “very happy place now.” The source added that it took months for the KUWTK star “to get to this point and now Kim Kardashian could finally be relieved and happy.

Ukrainian nuclear plant faces blazing attack, IAEA says no radioactive material released

0

As Russia continues its invasion on Ukraine for the ninth day, its troops gained control of the largest Ukrainian nuclear plant. A fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which is the largest nuclear plant in Europe. The fire was brought under control and Russian forces captured the plant, in the early hours of Friday. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that none of the six reactors in the site have been damaged and the radiation levels are normal. The U.S. Energy Secretary also said that there were no signs of elevated radiation.

Reuters verified a video that showed one building was under fire. There was a volley of incoming shells, according to the outlet which also reported that a large incandescent ball was seen in the sky. It exploded near a car park which was covered by smoke.

The fire was put out later and there was no radiation. However, Raphael Grossi, the chief of the IAEA told the outlet it was “normal operations, but in fact there is nothing normal about this.” He also said that the plant was undamaged.

Another official from the Ukrainian plant told the outlet that his organization lost contact with the plant operations but personnel were working to provide “normal operations of the station.”

The capture of the plant got reactions from all including the Ukrainian president who compared it to “nuclear terrorism.”

Russian defense ministry also maintained that the site was operating as usual. It blamed the attack on Ukrainian saboteurs. It also said that its forces had gained control of the plant.

As Ukrainian politicians and Russian politicians trade words and insults while their armies fire at each other, it is the Ukrainian on the street who is suffering from the consequences, with shortages and hardships. The United Nations said that over a million people have fled the country.

Ukrainian President Zelensky continues to appeal to the world with powerful speeches for help while Russia shuts down dissenting voices of both domestic and international media outlets who do not follow the country’s narrative.

Kanye releases shocking cartoon video featuring Kim’s boyfriend Pete, after she is legally single

Although Kim Kardashian must have heaved a huge sigh of relief after being declared “single” by a judge on Wednesday, her problems don’t seem to be going away. Ex-husband Kanye West released a horrific cartoon video that showed her boyfriend Pete Davidson being decapitated and buried alive. The video has been condemned by many on social media.

Kanye West has been exhibiting childish behavior, weird memes and more but the latest video goes beyond poor taste into the domain of harassment and users not only objected to it but also asked Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian to ask for restraining orders against Kanye.

The sickening video has the 44-year old rapping the following lyrics in the track called “Eazy.”
“God saved me from the crash, just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s a**.” If you think these lyrics are cheap and crass, the video is much worse!

Although the video is a series of graphic animations, the theme is filled with violence. The video shows a Kanye replica kidnapping a Pete replica. He throws a bag over Pete’s head and then ties him up and throws him in the back of an all terrain vehicle.

The video also shows Pete tied up using rope. He is then dragged through sand. He is buried alive with his head above the dirt. Then the Kanye replica grabs a packet of rose seeds that are poured over the replica’s head above the earth. Kanye looks at the flowers that bloom over the replica Pete’s head.

He then cuts off the flowers that have grown on top of Pete’s head and places them into the back of a pickup truck that looks similar to the vehicle that was parked near Kim’s house on Valentine’s Day. Incidentally, he had sent her a truckload of flowers to Kim on Valentine’s Day.

Kanye ends the clip with a message to Pete Davidson which said, “Everyone lived happily ever after except Skete” then he crosses out the name and writes “you know who.” He also said JK (Just Kidding) He’s fine (referring to Pete).

As mentioned earlier Kanye West has been posting a series of angry, weird and silly memes against Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson as he is dating West’s ex wife Kim Kardashian. “Skete” is one of among the list of derogatory terms that Kanye has been using to describe Pete.

Russian stocks see dramatic fall in London listings, trading suspended

The London Stock Exchange has suspended trade in Russian-linked companies. Largest lender Sberbank as well as energy giant Gazprom are among the 27 companies in which trading has temporarily stopped. Other companies in the list include Lukoil, Polyus and EN+. Earlier, on Friday the exchange had suspended a subsidiary of VTB, the second largest bank in Russia.

On Thursday, David Schwimmer told CNBC that the following steps had been taken in London listings:
Russian listings were removed from the FTSE Russell Index.
Russian listed securities (27) were suspended by the London Stock Exchange.

He said that their “World-Check business” was actively updating its data base 24X7 as the list with the numbers of individuals against whom sanctions were put was increasing. He added that it was something that they were doing “across the business” as they actively worked with “regulators to impose those sanctions.”

Almost all Russian companies that were listed in London had lost a huge amount of their value at the time of the announcement of the suspension on Thursday. On Wednesday, Russian companies had the following values:

Sherbank was down 99.72 percent year-to-date to trade for one penny.
Gazprom fell by 93.71 percent.
Lukoil slid by 99.2 percent.
Polyus decreased by 95.58 percent
Rosneft fell by 92.52 percent
EN+ declined by 20.52 percent.

Russian markets in the country have also faced large slides by staying mostly closed for the fourth day in a row, on Thursday. Earlier, there was a suspension of stocks and derivates trading as selling reached great heights; so the central bank suspended trading activity in Russia.

London has been a favorite trading hub for Russian oligarchs and businesses. However, the London Stock Exchange reported that its operations in Russia and Ukraine accounted for less than one percent of its total revenue in its earnings report, on Thursday.

Sanctions across industries including trade, media, sports, tech and entertainment are increasing as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues. When and how it will end, nobody knows, as yet. But, it is hoped that the invasion will end soon as so many lives have been lost. The world economies that had been slowly recovering from a two-year pandemic, are once again seeing high inflation mainly due to the rise in oil and gas prices.

Has Germany seized Russian billionaire’s super yacht, 512 foot, worth $594 million?

0

On Monday, the European Union, which has been sanctioning Russian oligarchs, due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, added Alisher Usmanov to its list. On Wednesday sources in the yacht industry said that his mega yacht might have been seized in Hamburg, in Germany.

Forbes reported that sources told them that Usmanov’s yacht Dilbar has been seized. It was not only one of the assets that gave him a lot of pride but was also named after his mother. It is a 512-foot yacht and is valued at roughly $600 million.

However, the Ministry for Economy and Innovation said that they have not seized the Dilbar. But, Forbes confirmed that the refitting work had been halted on Wednesday. The yacht is registered in the Cayman Islands and its owner is a holding company. It will be difficult to prove Usmanov as the owner, thereby putting sanctions on it. It could sanctioned “if the ownership situation is clarified.”

The ministry also noted that the German federal customs agency remains the “responsible enforcement authority.” The outlet said that the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Federal Customs Service have not as yet responded, when asked for comment.

Sources said that the mega sailing vessel had been in Blohm+Voss’ shipyards in Hamburg, Germany from about 5 months for a refitting job. They said that the German government might have frozen the super yacht and that was the probable reason why workers did not turn up to complete the ongoing work. It is still at the shipyard, according to the ministry.

On Thursday, when asked for comment by Forbes, a spokesperson for Lurssen the owner of Blohm+Voss declined to respond except to say that all orders and projects of the Lurssen Group and its subsidiaries were “treated in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.”

On Tuesday, Usmanov spoke on the EU sanctions slapped on him in a statement to the International Fencing Federation. He said that he was stepping down as the president of the organization. He called the decision to impose sanctions on him “unfair.”

The billionaire added that the reasons that were given to justify the sanctions against him were a “set of false and defamatory allegations” that damaged his “honor, dignity and business reputation.” He said that he would use legal means to protect his “honor and reputation.”
