Report: Wolves hire Nuggets president Tim Connelly on 5-year deal

The Minnesota Timberwolves finalized a five-year deal with Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly to have him lead their front office, ESPN reported Monday.

The contract is worth more than $40 million and includes ownership equity, per the report. It would make him among the NBA’s highest-paid executives.

Connelly became general manager of the Nuggets ahead of the 2013-14 season and has worked in their front office ever since. In 2014, he used a second-round pick to draft Serbian prospect Nikola Jokic, who eventually developed into a two-time league MVP.

Denver made a counteroffer to keep Connelly with the franchise, but he still opted for the Timberwolves’ offer, per ESPN. Connelly previously turned down overtures from the Washington Wizards for a similar role in 2019.

The Timberwolves dismissed their previous president of basketball operations, Gersson Rosas, days before training camp in September 2021. Reports at the time indicated that Rosas led a toxic workplace and had a “consensual” extramarital relationship with another Timberwolves employee.

The Timberwolves went 46-36 in the 2021-22 regular season and secured the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference by winning the first game of the play-in tournament. It marked just the second playoff appearance for the franchise since 2004. They lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round in six games.

French Open over for Naomi Osaka, Wimbledon in doubt

Naomi Osaka lost her first-round match to Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-4 at Roland Garros on Monday and might opt out of Wimbledon.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, is dealing with an Achilles injury and withdrew from the Italian Open tuneup before deciding to stick with the French Open in Paris.

Monday’s match lasted just 90 minutes. Osaka wasn’t at the French Open last year, taking one of two mental health breaks in the calendar year after declining to speak with media.

She said playing Wimbledon without the possibility to add rankings points makes the Grand Slam tourney similar to an “exhibition.”

“Yeah, like for me, I’m not sure why but, like, I feel like if I play Wimbledon without points, it’s more like an exhibition,” Osaka said. “I know this isn’t true, right? But my brain just like feels that way. Whenever I think like something is like an exhibition, I just can’t go at it 100 percent. I didn’t even make my decision yet, but I’m leaning more towards not playing given the current circumstances but, you know, that might change.”

Osaka said not playing as often as usual in preparation for the French Open was likely a limiting factor on Monday. She took to Court Suzanne Lenglen with tape on her left Achilles, but said it didn’t impact the loss.

“I still kind of felt it a little, which I’m going to see what happens when it wears off,” Osaka said. “I think, like, I kind of prepared myself to feel it, so that wasn’t really the wearing part. It was just annoying to me because, the last time I played here, our serves were really important. And, coming into this tournament, I didn’t serve a lot, because we kind of wanted to wait until last minute to protect my Achilles.”

Justin Thomas rises to No. 5 in world rankings

0

Justin Thomas rose to No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking on Monday, climbing four spots following his win at the PGA Championship.

Thomas, who has been No. 1 on two different occasions, had fallen to No. 9 entering last week. His come-from-behind victory at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., snapped a 14-month winless drought.

“I just think it’s just so hard to win,” Thomas said on Sunday. “Like, it is. I legitimately think it’s harder to win now than it was when I first came out on (the PGA) Tour just for the sake of the depth of the tour.

“I clearly haven’t won the amount of times that a lot of guys — not a lot; a handful of guys have this year. But I feel like I’ve played just as well as anybody on tour this year. I just haven’t had the trophies to show, and I’d fallen in the World Ranking, and that just kind of shows how strong it was or how strong the game of golf is.”

Will Zalatoris rose 16 spots to a career-high 14th in the world after falling to Thomas in a three-hole playoff. Zalatoris is still seeking his first career PGA Tour victory.

So, too, is Mito Pereira, the Chilean who double-bogeyed the 72nd hole while needing a par to win and a bogey to be part of the playoff. Pereira did vault 51 spots in the rankings to No. 49, climbing inside the coveted top 50 positions that qualify players for most every major worldwide event.

Thomas, 29, now has a pair of Wanamaker trophies on his resume along with the 2021 Players Championship. That had been his most recent victory before erasing a seven-shot deficit with a 67 on Sunday.

“I think it’s easy to start letting some doubt creep in and just kind of like, ‘all right, what’s going to happen, when is it going to happen, is it going to happen?'” Thomas said.

“I’m very fortunate right now that although there might be people ranked higher than me in the World Ranking, but at least in my eyes, I’m on top of the golfing world right now. And I’m very, very proud of that.”

Jaguars RB Travis Etienne (foot) cleared for OTAs

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne has been cleared for all practice activities and will take part in offseason workouts that start Monday, coach Doug Pederson said.

Etienne missed the entire 2021 season.

Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury to his left foot during the second quarter of a 23-21 preseason loss at New Orleans on Aug. 23 and had surgery in September. He landed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season.

Etienne, 23, was selected by the Jaguars with the 25th overall pick in the 2021 draft after they took his college teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, with the No. 1 pick.

Etienne is the all-time leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history after running for 4,952 yards in four seasons (55 games) at Clemson.

Lightning F Brandon Hagel fined $3,750 for boarding

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel was fined $3,750 Monday for boarding the Florida Panthers’ Eetu Luostarinen.

It was the maximum allowable fine under the collective bargaining agreement.

The incident occurred in Sunday’s Game 3. Hagel, 23, sent Luostarinen flying into the end boards and was called for a crosschecking penalty. However, the league labeled the fine for boarding.

Hagel, acquired by the Lightning in a trade with Chicago in March, has four points (one goal, three assists) and 16 penalty minutes in 10 postseason games.

The Lightning lead the best-of-seven series with the Panthers 3-0. Game 4 is Monday night in Tampa.

Heat G Tyler Herro (groin) ruled out for Game 4

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro has been ruled out of Monday night’s Game 4 against the Boston Celtics with a groin injury.

Jimmy Butler (knee), Kyle Lowry (hamstring), Max Strus (hamstring), Gabe Vincent (hamstring) and P.J. Tucker (knee) will all warm up with the intent to play, the team said. All are officially listed as questionable.

The Heat lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals 2-1.

Herro, 22, left Saturday’s Game 3 with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter and didn’t return. Herro scored eight points with three assists in 20 minutes. The Heat won the game, 109-103.

Herro is averaging 13.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 14 postseason games.

Butler started Game 3 but was held out of the second half after his knee became inflamed. Butler had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 20 minutes.

Virtus.pro bench buster, YEKINDAR

Virtus.pro shuffled their Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster on Monday following a disappointing result in the PGL Antwerp Major, moving Timur “buster” Tulepov of Kazakhstan and Mareks “YEKINDAR” Galinskis of Latvia to the bench.

Virtus.pro were eliminated in Antwerp at the Legends Stage and also posted less-than-expected results at IEM Katowice. At Antwerp, the team competed under the name “Outsiders” because Russian organizations weren’t officially recognized and finished 13th.

The organization said replacement players would be announced soon.

Remaining players on the roster are Russians Dzhami “Jame” Ali and Evgeny “FL1T” Lebedev, and Aleksey “Qikert” Golubev of Kazakhstan.

TE Tyler Kroft agrees to 1-year deal with 49ers

Tight end Tyler Kroft is signing a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, his agent said Monday.

Kroft, 29, caught 16 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown in nine games (six starts) last season for the New York Jets. He missed five games with a chest injury and spent time on short-term injured reserve.

Kroft has 101 catches for 1,024 yards and 13 touchdowns in 81 career games (48 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills and Jets. He was taken in the third round of the 2015 draft by the Bengals.

Rafael Nadal wins French opener for 299th Grand Slam win

Rafael Nadal breezed past Australian Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 as the Spaniard began his quest for a 14th French Open championship on Monday in Paris.

The win was the 299th in a Grand Slam match for Nadal, who will join contemporaries Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic with 300 following his next victory. And it had to be encouraging for the 21-time Grand Slam winner, who has been dealing with a recurring foot injury.

“It is a good start, of course,” Nadal, 35, said after the match. “I played good for a while, then (there were) things that I could do better and I need to do better. But it is a positive start, and that’s given me a chance to have one more day of practice tomorrow and then another chance after tomorrow.”

Next up for the fifth-seeded Nadal is French wild card Corentin Moutet, who came from behind to defeat 2015 French Open winner Stan Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Nadal broke Thompson’s serve seven times and had 27 winners to 14 for his opponent. Nadal’s record on the clay courts at Roland Garros is now 106-3.

Djokovic, the top seed, improved to 18-0 in the first round at Roland Garros by sailing to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.

Djokovic had nine aces and compiled a 35-17 edge in winners. Both players committed 32 unforced errors.

The match marked Djokovic’s first Grand Slam appearance since September’s loss to Daniil Medvedev in the U.S. Open final. He missed the Australian Open early this year when he was denied permission to stay in the country due to his unvaccinated status.

“I am pleased with the match,” Djokovic said afterward. “I struggled to adapt in the first set. He is a very quick player. The first set was close but I cruised through the second and third. I always expect the highest for myself but it was a very good start.”

Brit Cameron Norrie, seeded 10th, delivered a 7-5, 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Manuel Guinard of France.

Taylor Fritz was the only one of three Americans playing in matches featuring seeded players to post a win.

Fritz, the 13th seed, outlasted Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna of Argentina in three hours, 34 minutes by a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 margin.

Filip Krajinovic of Serbia knocked out No. 17 Reilly Opelka 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-3. The big-serving Opelka fired 12 aces but was undone by 47 unforced errors against 40 winners. Krajinovic had 23 winners and 10 unforced errors.

And Maxime Cressy lost to No. 22 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia despite hitting 42 aces. Cressy also had 19 double faults in the match. Basilashvili fought back from a two-set deficit to win 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4, 6-4 in another marathon match — three hours, 20 minutes.

Other seeded players to move on to the second round included No. 20 Marin Cilic of Croatia, who knocked out Hungarian Attila Balazs, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. No. 28 Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia and No. 29 Daniel Evans both won in straight sets.

Inbee Park withdraws from U.S. Women’s Open

0

Inbee Park won’t play in the 77th U.S. Women’s Open, set to begin June 2 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

She is a two-time winner of the U.S. Women’s Open. She also won’t compete this week at the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play event.

Golfweek reported Park, a 33-year-old from South Korea, is taking some time off to “get back into top form.” In her most recent events, she finished tied for 16th at the Palos Verdes Championship at the end of April and T3 at DIO Implant LA Open on April 21.

Park was in the field and finished fourth in 2007 when the U.S. Women’s Open most recently was held at Pine Needles. She has seven major titles among her 21 tour victories and currently is ranked ninth in the world.

American Andrea Lee is replacing Park in the field at Southern Pines.
