Reports: Kyler Murray skips Cardinals’ OTAs

Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray is skipping the team’s volunteer organized team activities this week, according to reports.

The move was expected as Murray and the Cardinals are at a standstill on talks about a contract extension.

The offseason between Murray and Arizona has included Murray scrubbing all references to the team from his social media at one point, and his agent later releasing a statement of more than 1,000 words saying Murray wanted a new contract.

Murray has never asked for a trade, which is good since Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said last month that there’s “zero chance” of that happening.

Murray is scheduled to make about $5.5 million in 2022, the fourth year of his rookie contract.

The Cardinals picked up the fifth-year option on Murray’s rookie contract late last month. The move guarantees Murray $29.7 million in 2023.

It also allows the two sides more time to negotiate a long-term deal.

In 2021, Murray passed for 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, and he also rushed for 423 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Murray made his playoff debut against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC wild-card round and his performance wasn’t good. He completed 19 of 34 passes for only 137 yards and two interceptions in a 34-11 loss.

In three seasons, Murray has a 22-23-1 record as a starter. He has passed for 11,480 yards, 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions, while rushing for 1,786 yards and 20 scores in 46 starts.

The Cardinals selected Murray No. 1 overall in 2019 NFL Draft.

Rangers aim to tie low-scoring series with Hurricanes

On Sunday, the New York Rangers managed to find more open ice for their offense and then survived a barrage of shots on goal from the Carolina Hurricanes.

As a result, the Rangers have a chance to even the Eastern Conference second-round series at home on Tuesday.

Neither team has scored much in a series that has seen plenty of tight checking after both teams needed seven games to get through the first round. The Rangers have four goals while the Hurricanes have scored five times.

In Game 3 on Sunday, it appeared Carolina was on the verge of taking complete command of the series, especially when it took the game’s first seven shots and 13 of the first 15.

New York goalie Igor Shesterkin survived the early barrage and made 43 saves while the Rangers got some production from their top players in the 3-1 win. Artemi Panarin made the long pass for Mika Zibanejad, who scored a power-play goal in the first period and then set up Chris Kreider’s goal in the second period.

“I liked the way we battled,” New York coach Gerard Gallant said. “… We felt like we were going to win the hockey game. Our goalie was outstanding in the first half of the game and made some big key saves for us. I thought we played well enough to win.”

Before Panarin, Zibanejad and Kreider combined for four points in Game 3, the trio had combined for seven shots on goal in the opening two games while New York’s potent offense produced 49 shots in the first two games and saw 39 shots get blocked. On Sunday, the three combined for 10 of New York’s 33 shots on goal and the Rangers only saw 10 of their shots get blocked.

“All three games have been really, really close games,” Kreider said. “Could’ve gone either way and you know, that’s playoff hockey. You just got to continue to work for your bounces.”

The only bounce Carolina saw go its way was a backhander by Nino Niederreiter that trickled by Shesterkin. Despite their 44 shots being their most of the playoffs, the Hurricanes dropped to 0-4 on the road this postseason.

“I think overall we definitely had our opportunities to win the game,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I would take that game most nights to be quite honest with you.”

Carolina’s biggest problem continues to be the power play. The Hurricanes mustered seven shots on three fruitless power plays, are 1-for-19 in their four road playoff games and 5-for-43 overall in the postseason.

“It’s execution, honestly,” Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin said. “We’ve got guys who are skilled. We’ve had the power play in the past and throughout the season be excellent. We were in the top there for a while. It’s just a matter of execution and, honestly, work. We’ve got to work a little harder.”

There may be some lingering tension when the puck drops Tuesday.

As Game 3 was ending, Carolina’s Max Domi tackled New York defenseman Ryan Lindgren resulting in a brief wrestling match and Gallant shouting at former New York defenseman Tony DeAngelo, who heard boos throughout the game.

Warriors ‘focused’ and seeking sweep of Mavericks

The Golden State Warriors look to become the first team since Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls to make six trips to the NBA Finals over an eight-year stretch by closing out the host Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

The Warriors rode a familiar script — a greater depth of scoring and a dominant third quarter — to a third straight win in the best-of-seven set Sunday night, winning 109-100 at Dallas to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

No team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit to win in the NBA playoffs.

Rising to dominance with the hiring of Steve Kerr as coach prior to the 2014-15 season, the Warriors made five straight trips to the NBA Finals, winning three times, before missing the playoffs entirely in each of the last two years.

A win Tuesday would lock in a sixth appearance in Kerr’s eight seasons, a series in which the Warriors would have the home-court advantage over either of the Eastern Conference finalists — the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics.

While the Warriors have been great at winning series in the Kerr era — they’ve captured 20 of 22, losing only to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 Finals and to the Toronto Raptors in the 2019 Finals — they haven’t necessarily been great at sweeping series when they’ve put themselves in a position to do so.

Golden State has gone 6-4 in Game 4 when up 3-0, with one of the losses coming against the Denver Nuggets earlier this season.

Kerr thought the Warriors played a sloppy Game 4 at Denver with a chance to sweep in the first round, then watched as the Memphis Grizzlies crushed his club in a potential close-out game in Game 5 in the Western semifinals. He’s hoping the third time’s the charm.

“It’s always the toughest game, the close-out game, so we know it will be difficult,” he insisted Monday. “I would expect that we’ve learned from those two games that we lost and we’ll have a focused effort (Tuesday).”

The Warriors used a 30-21 run in the third quarter in Game 3 to overtake the Mavericks for good. Golden State has outscored Dallas 89-58 in the third period in the series, shooting 53.0 percent in those 36 minutes while limiting the Mavericks to 36.8 percent.

While no team has ever rallied from 3-0 down in the NBA, three have made it to a Game 7, most recently the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2003 first round against the Mavericks.

Win or lose in Game 4, Dallas coach Jason Kidd insists this is a start, not a finish, for his young team led by 23-year-old Luka Doncic.

“This is just the beginning of our journey,” he claimed after the Game 3 loss. “This is huge for our franchise. It’s great to go through this. You can call (the Warriors a) dynasty. They have three great players who will all be Hall of Famers. So we’re learning a big lesson. This is not the end. This is just the beginning.”

Doncic has scored 42 and 40 points in the last two games. Only two players have ever put up 40 or more three times in a conference finals: Hakeem Olajuwon in 1995 and LeBron James in both 2009 and 2018.

Defending champ Barbora Krejcikova falls at French Open

Defending women’s singles champion and No. 2 seed Barbora Krejcikova lost in the first round of the French Open on Monday to 97th-ranked Diane Parry, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours, eight minutes.

Krejcikova and Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, were both eliminated in a surprising opening round at Roland Garros.

Both women came to Paris following injury-related layoffs and rust was evident for the Czech Krejcikova in her first match since February due to an elbow injury.

The French teen Parry, 19, had boisterous support at Roland Garros.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing on this court,” Parry said from center court under the roof with rain causing havoc. “I’d like to thank the fans for their support. They helped me to go for it.”

Parry is the lowest-ranked woman to beat the second seed at Roland Garros since Arantxa Rus beat Kim Clijsters in 2011. Up next for Parry is Colombian Camila Osorio in the second round.

Osaka lost her opening match to fellow American Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-4, in a 90-minute rout that left Osaka contemplating whether she will skip Wimbledon, with no rankings points on the line.

Anisimova reached the French Open semifinals in 2019. She had 27 winners to 13 for Osaka on Monday.

“I just was trying to stay aggressive and keep going for my flat shots, because that’s what I thought would help me get the win today,” Anisimova said. “It was a bit tricky for me because it was harder for me to play my game. It was just tough conditions and I think it was just a tough match for both of us today.”

Krejcikova is the third women’s defending champion to drop a first-round match at the French Open since 2005 (Anastasia Myskina; 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko).

Krejcikova started strong and showed no signs of her bothersome elbow, and took the first four games in 17 minutes. Parry also dropped the first two games of the second set before mounting a momentous rally by landing 67 percent of her second serves.

Top seed Iga Swiatek dominated a straight sets victory over Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine in a 54-minute match, her 29th consecutive singles win.

“I just want to be concentrating on the tennis and not thinking about the numbers,” Swiatek said of the winning streak.

Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic knocked out No. 5 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Other winners Monday included No. 12 seed Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, No. 15 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, two-time Roland Garros semifinalist Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic, 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada and Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is coming off her 14th career title Sunday in Strasbourg.

HP Inc. Q2 Earnings Preview

0

Deutsche Bank analysts shared their outlook on HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) ahead of the company’s upcoming Q2 earnings, expected to be reported on May 31.
The analysts expect Q2 results and Q3 guidance to be negatively impacted by the worsening supply chain constraints, and see risks that revenue would be more back-end loaded for its full year outlook than the company previously guided. That said, the analysts expect the company to suggest end demand remains strong, especially for the company’s key growth areas such as commercial, gaming and peripherals, and they believe it’s unlikely that management would comment on a more broad-based demand weakness driven by macro uncertainties.
The analysts believe profitability is a key metric to monitor, as it indirectly reflects the demand environment as well as the company’s confidence in raising prices.

Bubba Watson out 4-6 weeks with torn meniscus

0

PGA Tour veteran Bubba Watson revealed Monday that he has a torn meniscus and will not compete for four to six weeks.

Watson, who shot a round of 63 on Friday at the PGA Championship, disclosed the injury in a tweet announcing his withdrawal from this week’s tour stop, the Charles Schwab Challenge.

“Recent knee issues turned out to be a torn meniscus so I’ll be out for 4-6 weeks,” Watson wrote. “Hope to be back soon!”

Watson, 43, did not say which knee was injured or how long he had been playing through it.

The two-time Masters winner tied the PGA Championship record with his 63 in the second round Friday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Only one round was lower in men’s major championship history: the 62 South Africa’s Branden Grace carded during the 2017 Open Championship.

Watson shot over par in his other three rounds, however, and finished the event tied for 30th at 3 over.

Colts add QB Nick Foles on 2-year deal

The Indianapolis Colts are adding quarterback Nick Foles with a two-year contract, NFL Network reported Monday.

The move reunites Foles with Colts head coach Frank Reich, Foles’ offensive coordinator while both were in Philadelphia.

Foles will back up new Colts starter Matt Ryan.

The Bears released Foles earlier this month after failing to find a trade partner.

Foles, 33, appeared in 10 games (eight starts) in two seasons in Chicago, completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 2,102 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions and a 3-5 record. Last season, he was the third-string quarterback behind veteran Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields.

The Bears acquired Foles in a trade with Jacksonville two seasons ago.

Foles has thrown for 14,003 yards and 82 touchdowns in 68 games (56 starts) with five teams, most notably the Philadelphia Eagles (2012-14, 2017-18). Foles led the Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl LII.

Atlanta United D Andrew Gutman (quad) out 8-12 weeks

0

Atlanta United defender Andrew Gutman will miss two to three months with an injured quadriceps tendon.

The team said Monday that he sustained the injury to his left quad in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Nashville SC.

Gutman, 25, has started all 12 of his appearances this season.

He has two goals and three assists in 63 career matches (51 starts) with FC Cincinnati (2019-20), New York Red Bulls (2021) and Atlanta.

Injuries have hit the Five Stripes hard this season. Goalkeeper Brad Guzan, defender Miles Robinson and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso are all out with season-ending injuries, while striker Josef Martinez, midfielder Santiago Sosa and others have missed time.

Report: Security boosted as Nazem Kadri reportedly threatened

The NHL asked police in St. Louis to ramp up security at the Avalanche’s team hotel and the Blues’ arena amid threats allegedly made toward Colorado forward Nazem Kadri, TSN reported Monday.

Kadri was involved in a play in Game 3 of the teams’ second-round Western Conference playoff series that left Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington with a lower-body injury and out for the rest of the series.

Binnington was injured 6:45 into Saturday’s game after Kadri and Blues defenseman Calle Rosen crashed into him. Binnington tried some agility drills but was not able to continue.

No penalty was assessed but fans have called out Kadri for a dirty play. The Avalanche won 5-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, which resumes in St. Louis on Monday night.

Kadri is Muslim and a founding member of the Hockey Diversity Alliance. Akim Aliu, a former NHL player who chairs the committee, said Kadri has been on the receiving end of “racist” remarks since Saturday night.

“Naz has been subject to so many racist attacks and threats since last night that police had to be brought in,” Aliu wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “Racist attacks like this have no place in hockey and should be investigated and reported on.”

Kadri told reporters after the game that he did nothing wrong.

“I just see a loose puck,” he said. “I was kind of just sitting behind him and just tried to poke it with my stick. And I think their defenseman (Rosen) kind of collided with me and pushed me into him. So, you know, had that not been the case, I don’t think I would have hit him at all. It’s a loose puck. I’m just trying to bang it in.”

But Kadri, 33, has a history of suspensions and especially bad blood with the Blues and their fans. A year ago — May 21, 2021 — Kadri was suspended eight games following an illegal check to the head of Blues defenseman Justin Faulk in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup first-round playoff series. The Avalanche swept the series.

Including last year, Kadri has been suspended three times in the postseason.

This season, Kadri has appeared in seven playoff games, with two goals and four assists. He played in 71 regular-season games, amassing 87 points (28 goals, 59 assists) and 71 penalty minutes.
