Padres place RHP Mike Clevinger on injured list

Right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger was placed on the 15-day injured list by the San Diego Padres on Sunday because of a right-triceps strain.

The Clevinger IL move is retroactive to Saturday. To replace him, the Padres recalled right-hander Steven Wilson from Triple-A El Paso.

The severity of the injury wasn’t known. Clevinger, 31, had Tommy John surgery on the same arm in November 2020 and missed all of the 2021 season.

Clevinger is 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in three starts this season. He has pitched 14 innings, giving up 11 hits, walking five and striking out 15.

Wilson has appeared in 16 games for the Padres this season, going 3-1 with one save and a 3.94 ERA across 16 innings. He pitched a perfect ninth inning in San Diego’s 10-1 win over the host San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

The Reign produced a 2-1 triumph on Ilios before winning 3-1 on Midtown, then took down the Titans with a 3-0 decision on Route 66.

The Uprising jumped all over the Justice early, taking maps on Oasis (2-0) and King’s Row (2-0) for a quick 2-0 advantage. Washington won 1-0 on Circuit Royal to pull within one, but Boston claimed New Queen Street 1-0 for a much-needed victory.

Lightning go for series sweep over NHL-best Panthers

The Tampa Bay Lightning can return to the Eastern Conference Finals for a third straight season with a victory against the visiting Florida Panthers in Game 4 of their second-round series in the Stanley Cup playoffs on Monday night.

The Lightning took a 3-0 series lead with a 5-1 win against the Panthers in Tampa on Sunday afternoon, the third straight game they limited Florida to one goal.

The Tampa Bay defense has been anchored by goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, who has not only held the Panthers to one goal in each of the first three games, but limited the Toronto Maple Leafs to a single score in a 2-1 win in Game 7 of their first-round series on May 14.

“He’s the backbone right now,” Tampa Bay forward Nicholas Paul said of Vasilevskiy. “He gives us the wind in the sail.”

Florida owned the best record in the NHL during the regular season (58-18-6, 122 points), but hasn’t managed to solve the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.

“You can see why they’ve won two Stanley Cups,” Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau said of the Lightning. “They’re a good team.”

In addition to Vasilevskiy, the Panthers haven’t found an answer for Lightning veteran forwards Nikita Kucherov or Corey Perry.

Kucherov, who led the Lightning in scoring the past two postseasons, had a goal and three assists in Game 3 to give him two goals and five assists in the series. He also has a team-leading 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 10 playoff games this postseason.

Perry has a goal in each of the first three games of the series to give him 50 playoff goals in his 17-year NHL career.

Perry, who turned 37 last week, scored the first goal in Games 2 and 3, giving him 13 goals to start a playoff game in his NHL career, which is second among active players behind Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins (16).

Perry’s early goals have put the Panthers in difficult situations, Florida coach Andrew Brunette said.

“When you fall behind to these guys, it’s tough to come back,” Brunette said

Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos, who scored two goals on Sunday to give him points in all three games of the series, said the Lightning aren’t hesitant to roll with all four lines.

“Whatever guys are on the ice, we have full trust in that,” Stamkos said.

Huberdeau tied for second in the NHL with 115 points (30 goals, 85 assists) during the regular season, but has been limited to one goal and four assists in nine playoff games.

Sam Reinhart scored the lone goal on Sunday for the Panthers, but it was just his fourth point (three goals, one assist) in nine playoff games after totaling 33 goals and 49 assists during the regular season.

“It’s tough not to get frustrated,” Reinhart said. “I think there’s certain things we’re doing well, but just not enough bodies around the net to pick up those loose opportunities.”

Reinhart said it helps that the Panthers will have a short turnaround heading into Game 4.

“We’re back at it again (Monday),” Reinhart said. “You don’t want much time in these situations to think about it too much. You just want to go out there, play and put on a better performance.”

Earthquakes press, but settle for draw with Sporting KC

0

Jackson Yueill scored the equalizing goal and the San Jose Earthquakes settled for a 1-1 draw against visiting Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

The Quakes (3-5-5, 14 points) are 3-1-2 in six MLS matches under interim coach Alex Covelo.

Johnny Russell scored for Sporting KC (3-7-4, 13 points), who earned a point on the road for just the second time this season (0-6-2).

San Jose dominated possession in the first half, with 62 percent of the touches and attempting 10 shots, four of which reached the target. The Earthquakes finished with an 18-6 shots advantage, including 5-2 in shots on goal.

Jeremy Ebobisse pressed for the opening tally with several chances. In the 14th minute, his shot from above the arc went right of the net and three minutes later, the forward tried to connect off a drive from the left side. Ebobisse couldn’t fully settle the ball at the top of the box before taking a shot that drifted high and wide.

In the 41st minute, his long-range strike appeared headed wide as Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia dove to ensure it steered clear of the net.

Kansas City made the most of its limited opportunities to take a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. Quakes goalkeeper JT Marcinowski came out to the left of the net to stop Cameron Duke and couldn’t get back in time, giving Russell an open net for the easy tally.

It was the 44th goal of Russell’s MLS career, moving him into sole possession of third-most regular-season goals in Sporting KC history.

San Jose responded with the equalizer early in the second half. Yueill, inside the box, headed in a feed from Jamiro Monteiro to tie it 1-1 in the 46th minute.

The home side continued to control the play, pushing to take the lead. In the 60th minute, Ebobisse’s shot from the left side of the box rolled past the far post while Javier “Chofis” Lopez’s attempt from above the box in the 72nd minute just missed the left side of the net.

Russell had a chance for his second of the match in the 75th minute on a sliding kick that rolled behind the net.

Warriors shut down Mavericks to take 3-0 series lead

The Golden State Warriors are one win away from another trip to the NBA Finals. They’re doing it as a team.

And there’s nothing Luka Doncic has been able to do about it.

Doncic had his second consecutive 40-point game Sunday night, but the Warriors countered with quality efforts from several players, including Stephen Curry with a team-high 31 points and Andrew Wiggins with a playoffs career-high 27 in a 109-100 victory that gave them a 3-0 advantage in the Western Conference finals.

Curry and Wiggins wrapped up double-doubles with 11 assists and rebounds, respectively, and Klay Thompson chipped in with 19 points as the Warriors moved within a win Tuesday night of closing out the best-of-seven series and claiming a spot in the NBA Finals for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.

“This is what it’s about. This is the best time of the year,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr gushed afterward. “To be involved in it again is special. We’ve missed this the last couple of years.

“This is probably our best stretch of the season. We’ve got a lot of guys playing at a high level right now.”

Seeking to rebound from a pair of series-opening losses in San Francisco, the Mavericks countered with three players who performed at a high level, led by Doncic, who had a game-high 40 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Spencer Dinwiddie complemented him with 26 points off the bench, while Jalen Brunson went for 20.

But the other six Mavericks who saw action in the game combined for 14 points on 5-for-27 shooting, much to Mavericks coach Jason Kidd’s chagrin.

“When you look at the three guys who scored, that’s just not enough against the Warriors,” Kidd assessed. “We need more guys to contribute.”

Especially on the backboards. Wiggins grabbed six offensive rebounds and surprise Game 2 star Kevon Looney had four among his team-high 12 total rebounds, helping Golden State accumulate 14 offensive boards, 18 second-chance points and 46 points in the paint.

“Eighteen second-chance points — it just puts you in a bad situation,” Kidd assured. “I’ve said this before: We’re going to live and die by the 3(-pointer). But we’re dying by not getting the rebounds and giving them second-chance opportunities.”

Up just 48-47 after a first half in which neither team shot well, the Warriors got scoring from six different players in a 30-21 third-quarter burst to open a double-digit lead. Curry had 11 of his 31 points in the quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Mavericks, who came back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to eliminate top-seeded Phoenix in the second round, got as close as 89-83 with 7:16 remaining on a Davis Bertans dunk.

But Curry countered with a pair of free throws and Wiggins blew the game open with a pair of dunks, one on which he flew over Doncic for an electrifying slam that was originally called an offensive foul but later overturned.

The Mavericks had one more run in them, closing within 104-99 on 3-pointers by Doncic and Dinwiddie with still over a minute to play. But Jordan Poole delivered the crushing blow with a 3-pointer with 54.2 seconds left.

“Big shot by JP,” Curry credited. “Klay started the fourth with some big shots. Wiggs was unbelievable. That dunk. That putback. He’s everywhere with his energy. It’s just a great team win.”

Curry shot 10-for-20 overall and Wiggins 11-for-20, helping Golden State outshoot the hosts 46.9 percent to 40.0 percent.

Draymond Green and Poole each chipped in with 10 points for Golden State, which won a road game for an NBA-record 26th consecutive playoff series.

“That number is crazy,” Curry declared. “When you’re up 2-0 and you come on the road and try to get control of the series … that’s huge. We obviously know the job is not done. We get to play with house money on Tuesday and try to get it done.”

Doncic shot 4-for-9 on 3-pointers and Dinwiddie 4-for-10, but the Mavericks earned just a 39-33 scoring edge from beyond the arc despite taking 13 more 3-point attempts than the visitors.

NHL roundup: Nikita Kucherov, Lightning push Panthers to brink

Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists to help the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the visiting Florida Panthers 5-1 in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series on Sunday and move within one win of advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for a third straight season.

Steven Stamkos scored two goals for Tampa Bay, and Corey Perry and Erik Cernak also scored. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 34 saves for the Lightning, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions who will bring a 3-0 lead into Game 4 on Monday night in Tampa.

Vasilevskiy held the Toronto Maple Leafs to one goal in a 2-1 victory in Game 7 of their first-round series, and he has limited the Panthers to one goal in each of the first three games of this series.

Sam Reinhart scored Sunday, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves for Florida, which had the best record in the NHL during the regular season.

Oilers 4, Flames 1

Evander Kane collected a natural hat trick while Leon Draisaitl set an NHL record with four assists in a period as host Edmonton defeated Calgary to pull ahead in their Western Conference second-round playoff series.

Connor McDavid collected three assists and Zach Hyman scored once for the Oilers, who lead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 will be Tuesday night in Edmonton. Oliver Kylington replied for the Flames, while goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 of 34 shots before giving way to Dan Vladar for the third period.

Oilers goaltender Mike Smith stopped 32 shots and was working on a shutout but was pulled due to concussion protocol after Calgary’s Milan Lucic drove into him midway through the third period. Smith returned after missing four-plus minutes. Lucic received a major penalty and game misconduct.

Rangers 3, Hurricanes 1

Igor Shesterkin made 43 saves and New York held on to beat visiting Carolina in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference second-round series.

Mika Zibanejad scored a power-play goal in the first period and set up Chris Kreider’s 30th career playoff goal in the second period as the Rangers cut the Hurricanes’ series advantage to 2-1. Tyler Motte added an empty-net goal with 83 seconds remaining.

Nino Niederreiter scored in the second for Carolina, which is 0-4 on the road in this year’s postseason. Antti Raanta made 30 saves. Game 4 will be Tuesday, also in New York.

Minnesota United earns road victory against FC Dallas

0

Robin Lod recorded his team-leading sixth goal in the first half and D.J. Taylor scored just before the hour mark, and Minnesota United FC held on to snap a four-match winless rut by handing FC Dallas its first home loss of the season with a 2-1 victory on Sunday in Frisco, Texas.

MUFC (5-5-3, 18 points), 0-3-1 in its last four MLS contests, also halted a three-game road skid by winning for the first time in seven all-time matches. Dallas (6-3-4, 22 points), meanwhile, not only fell to 5-1-1 at home this season, but has now dropped back-to-back overall matches following an impressive 6-0-3 stretch.

Four minutes after MUFC went up 2-0 on Taylor’s goal in the 55th minute, and just under the hour-mark, Dallas’ Paul Arriola scored in his fourth consecutive match on a right-footed laser into the high-right corner of the net. It ignited the home crowd, but despite FCD holding 67.6 percent of the possession, owning an 18-7 overall shot edge and pressing until the end, it could not equalize.

Dallas was the aggressor early and had the first official shot on goal — though easily saved by MUFC goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. However, it was Minnesota, which posted two goals in its previous four MLS matches, that struck in 20 minutes. FCD keeper Maarten Paes (four saves) made the initial save on Emanuel Reynoso’s free kick, but the rebound was hot enough for Lod to pounce on and convert a fifth goal in his last six league games.

FCD also opened the second half poised to equalize. It appeared that would happen within the first three minutes, but Franco Jara missed wide of the goal.

Again, it was Minnesota that converted to go up 2-0, this time indirectly off a set piece.

The ball eventually found its way outside the top of the box to Taylor, who stuck on a half-volley through traffic on a shot to which Paes seemed late to react.

MUFC is 4-0-2 in its last six overall matches versus Dallas.

Report: Juwan Howard declines Lakers’ coaching overture

Michigan Wolverines coach Juwan Howard recently declined an overture by the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA team’s head-coaching position, ESPN reported Sunday.

Howard will remain at his alma mater, where he will coach his two sons — Jace and Jett — next season, ESPN reported, citing sources. Jace will be a junior and Jett a freshman at Michigan.

The Lakers have been searching for a head coach since Frank Vogel was fired in April after the team finished 33-49 and missed the playoffs.

ESPN said the Lakers never made a formal offer to Howard but that he would have become a serious candidate for the job if he had shown an interest.

Howard interviewed for the Lakers’ head-coaching position when he was a Miami Heat assistant coach in 2019 before he accepted the top job at Michigan.

Howard guided the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season. He is 61-32 in three seasons at Michigan, including 19-15 this past season. The team also made the NCAA Tournament the previous season, reaching the Elite Eight and finishing 23-5.

ESPN reported that finalists for the Lakers’ coaching job include Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, and former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts. The outlet said the Lakers likely will conduct in-person interviews in the near future.

Inter Miami shuts out Red Bulls

0

Robert Taylor and Ariel Lassiter scored as Inter Miami CF topped the visiting New York Red Bulls 2-0 Sunday evening in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

For the Red Bulls (5-3-5, 20 points), the loss snaps an eight-game unbeaten run across all contests. It’s the first time since April 2 that New York was held scoreless in a defeat.

Dribbling the ball along the left wing after receiving a feed from Bryce Duke in the 29th minute, Lassiter danced around a pair of New York defenders and sliced toward the middle of the box, where he unleashed a right-footed shot that beat a sliding defender and a diving goalkeeper. The goal was Lassiter’s first of the season, and the fifth of his MLS career.

It seemed like Miami (4-6-3, 15 points) might have another opportunity to score in stoppage time of the first half, after an apparent handball in the box by the Red Bulls, but the official did not signal for a penalty kick after a lengthy VAR review.

Miami sealed the victory in the 88th minute when Gonzalo Higuain fed a pass to Taylor, who was sprinting up the right flank. When Taylor ran onto the ball, it created a two-on-one opportunity for Miami with Taylor and Victor Ulloa.

Taylor laid the ball off to Ulloa, who drew in New York goalkeeper Ryan Meara before passing it back to Taylor, who easily blasted the ball into the open net. It was the first MLS goal for Taylor, a 27-year-old midfielder from Finland.

New York outshot Miami 15-11 but put just four attempts on-frame and failed to find the back of the net. The Red Bulls also controlled nearly 54 percent of possession.

Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender had four saves and a 96 percent accuracy on passes.

Evander Kane’s hat trick helps Oilers take 2-1 series lead over Flames

Evander Kane collected a natural hat trick while Leon Draisaitl set an NHL record with four assists in a period as the host Edmonton Oilers posted a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Sunday night to pull ahead in their Western Conference second-round playoff series.

Connor McDavid collected three assists and Zach Hyman scored once for the Oilers, who lead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Oilers goaltender Mike Smith stopped 32 shots and was working on a shutout but was pulled from the game due to concussion protocol after Calgary’s Milan Lucic drove into him midway through the third period. Smith returned after missing four-plus minutes. Mikko Koskinen wasn’t forced to make a save in Smith’s absence.

Lucic received a major penalty and game misconduct.

Oliver Kylington replied for the Flames, while goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 of 34 shots before giving way to Dan Vladar for the third period. Vladar stopped seven shots.

Game 4 will be Tuesday night in Edmonton.

The Oilers carried play from the start, outshooting the Flames 21-7 in the first period, and were rewarded 52 seconds into the second period. Hyman found the mark from the bottom of the right circle for his third goal in as many outings and sixth goal of the playoffs.

Kane doubled the lead at 6:58 of the period when he finished the passing play on a rush, and he scored his second goal of the game 53 seconds later, a tap-in tally set up by McDavid after making a jaw-dropping play on the rush before feeding the pass across.

Kane completed the hat trick with 7:02 remaining in the period when he teamed again with McDavid on a two-on-one rush for his 10th goal of the playoffs.

Kane posted the third natural hat trick in Oilers history, joining Petr Klima (1991) and Wayne Gretzky (1983).

McDavid became the first player in history to record nine multi-point games in the first 10 games of a playoff run. He also is the sixth player to have a multi-point streak of six or more games.

McDavid is the fourth player in history to have 23 or more points in 10 games to start the playoffs, joining Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Rick Middleton.

Kylington’s first career playoff goal with 4:51 remaining in regulation spoiled the Oilers’ shutout bid.
