Boston Uprising part ways with Marve1

Boston Uprising parted ways Monday with veteran tank Min-seo “Marve1” Hwang over “personal issues.”

The 21-year-old South Korean joined the Overwatch League team in October 2021 following a three-year run with Seoul Dynasty.

“Since last year, Minseo has been reflecting and dealing with personal issues,” Uprising president Chris “HuK” Loranger posted on Twitter. “We have worked on trying to alleviate some of those issues but came to the unfortunate mutual conclusion that returning home to South Korea, where he can focus on his personal growth, would be the healthiest option for his well-being.”

Marve1 had been sharing time this season with fellow tanks Leyton “Punk” Gilchrist and Chang-hee “ITSAL” Kim.

Boston Uprising are off to a 2-3 start in the Kickoff Clash qualifiers. Their next match is May 29 against the Dallas Fuel.

Crafty southpaw takes on rookie in Mariners-A’s opener

After Marco Gonzales stymied the Toronto Blue Jays last week, allowing one run in six innings, Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais was asked why the left-hander doesn’t get more credit.

“Marco’s not sexy,” Servais said.

Gonzales will try to help snap the Mariners’ four-game losing streak when they return home to face the Oakland Athletics on Monday night.

Gonzales (2-4, 3.08 ERA) laughed when told of his manager’s assessment.

“I’m not sexy,” Gonzales said. “Everybody looks at what I got, and they say I don’t even touch 90 (mph). But I don’t know what else I can say. I’m still here and I’m still making big-league starts and still getting big-league hitters out. So I guess that speaks for itself.”

Said Servais: “There are a lot of different ways to get people out, and Marco takes pride in what he does. ”

When he steps on the mound, he feels like he can throw 100 (mph). He locates. He changes speeds. He wins. There’s a lot to be said for that.”

Gonzales helped the Mariners salvage the finale of a three-game series in Toronto, but they had a disastrous weekend in Boston, losing all four games. That included an 8-4 defeat Sunday in 10 innings as the Red Sox’s Franchy Cordero hit a walk-off grand slam on an 0-2 pitch with two outs.

The Red Sox hit 10 homers in the series, with five from Trevor Story, whom the Mariners tried to sign as a free agent in the offseason.

The Mariners have allowed a major-league-high 56 homers this season, four more than the next-closest team.

“We’ve had some adversity early in the season,” Servais said. “More than we really bargained for. But that’s just the way it goes. You’ve got to figure out a way to fight through it.”

The Mariners hope facing Oakland for the first time this season might change their fortunes. Seattle went 15-4 against the A’s in 2021, winning the last 12 meetings.

The A’s are 3-7 over their past 10 games, the same record in that span as Seattle.

Oakland has lost two in a row, including a 4-1 defeat Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif.

The A’s managed just four hits in the loss and allowed solo homers to Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.

The loss spoiled the return from the injured list of Cole Irvin, who posted a quality start.

“I thought he did a great job managing that lineup,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “Getting through six innings was huge for us. The bullpen needed it after (Saturday). He gave us a chance to win.”

A’s rookie left-hander Zach Logue (2-2, 2.04) is set to make his fourth major-league start on Monday. While Logue has never faced the Mariners, Gonzales is 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 15 career appearances against the A’s, including 14 starts.

Oakland outfielder Ramon Laureano is considered day-to-day after getting hit in the right hand by a pitch Saturday.

Kohl’s Corporation Reports Q1 Miss, Cuts Full-Year Guidance

0

Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) reported its Q1 results, with EPS coming in at $0.11, missing the Street estimate of $0.71. Revenue was $3.47 billion, below the Street estimate of $3.71 billion.
Management cited a large drop in comp trends in April driven by unfavorable weather (northern stores were 800 bps below southern) as well as the lapping of stimulus and very tough compares in home (down 17% in Q1 vs. up 30% last year).
The company lowered its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $6.45-$6.85 from $7-$7.5, compared to the Street estimate of $7.03.
While acknowledging the transitory nature of these headwinds, analysts at Deutsche Bank said that they do think investors are wary around the level of improvement baked into H2 guidance, with comps implied up low-single-digits compared to down low-single-digits in Q2 and down mid-single-digits in Q1, SG&A dollars improving to down low-single-digits year-over-year in H2 vs. up high-single-digits in H1, and elevated inventory levels coming out of Q1.

Report: NFL could stretch Deshaun Watson decision to 2023

The NFL is expected to decide whether to suspend Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson before the season begins, though there’s a small chance the issue could drag into 2023, The MMQB reported Monday.

According to the report, the NFL has talked with at least half of the 22 women who filed civil suits against Watson last spring, contending he committed sexual improprieties with them during the course of massages.

Watson was questioned last week by two NFL investigators.

Work on the civil cases is expected to be put on hold on July 1 until after the 2022 season. At that point, the NFL could make a decision on a potential suspension or wait until before the 2023 season, which MMQB said was unlikely.

Once the investigators have finished their work, they will give their results to former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson, who can determine the penalty for Watson, per the report.

Two grand juries in Texas declined to indict Watson in any of the cases, and he maintains he did nothing wrong.

But in a pre-trial deposition recently, Watson admitted at least one massage therapist left their session in tears and he sent her an apology, according to attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the women.

Cleveland surrendered significant draft capital that included three first-round picks to acquire Watson in a trade with the Houston Texans on March 18. Cleveland then signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract.

Watson’s contract was structured in a way that he is scheduled to receive just $1.035 million in base pay in 2022, meaning he’s at risk to be hurt much more financially with a 2023 suspension when he is slated to earn $46 million in base pay.

Watson, 26, did not play in 2021 amid a request for a trade and his legal issues.

Cardinals to be featured on in-season ‘Hard Knocks’

The Arizona Cardinals will be featured on the second installment of HBO’s “Hard Knocks In Season.”

It’s the first appearance for the Cardinals on “Hard Knocks.”

The series will debut in November in the second half of the 2022 season. The in-season series debuted in 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts.

“We can’t wait to get to work in Arizona, and we thank (owner) Michael Bidwill, (general manager) Steve Keim, coach (Kliff) Kingsbury and the entire Cardinals organization for this opportunity,” said Keith Cossrow, NFL Films senior coordinating producer in the announcement.

The Detroit Lions will be featured in the preseason edition of “Hard Knocks” in August.

“Hard Knocks” premiered on HBO in 2001. Except for 2011, when the league had an offseason lockout, the show has followed at least one team every preseason since 2007.

Flames still searching for a way to slow down Oilers

Trailing 2-1 in a playoff series is not uncharted territory for the Calgary Flames. They were in this exact situation in their opening-round set with the Dallas Stars before winning three of four games to advance.

However, as the Flames prepare for Game 4 of their Western Conference second-round clash at the Edmonton Oilers, they are up against a team that has been dominating play for much of the past two games. On Sunday, the Oilers rode four second-period goals to a 4-1 victory.

History will show Evander Kane scored a natural hat trick and Leon Draisaitl set a league record with four assists during that period, but unquestionably the player leading the way is Edmonton captain Connor McDavid, and the onus is on the Flames to find a way to stop him.

“They’ve got one player that plays half the game and is playing some great hockey right now,” Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk said. “We’ve got to find a way to stop that. When we get in their zone, we’ve got to hold pucks, nothing blind, and get shots to the goalie. That’s where they can have some trouble, with rebounds and loose coverage with that.”

The Flames claimed the Pacific Division crown in the regular season by being a dominant five-on-five team, using all four lines. Against the Oilers, they have been guilty of taking far too many penalties, which has helped Edmonton’s top trio gain momentum.

“They’re a tight team and they check well in the neutral zone, but we can still move (the puck) a little bit faster and we’ve got to find ways to … get in on the forecheck,” defenseman Rasmus Andersson said. “Once we get into their zone, we’re fine.”

The Oilers, who finished second in the division, are playing a strong team game, but McDavid’s exploits are filled with superlatives.

McDavid, who has amassed 23 points in 10 playoff games, is the first player in NHL history to record nine multi-point games in the first 10 games of a playoff run. Only Wayne Gretzky (29 in 1983, 25 in 1985) and Mario Lemieux (25 in 1992) ever scored more points in the first 10 games of a postseason.

“He’s been on fire in the playoffs,” Kane said. “He’s taking his game to the next level. … He’s physical. He’s involved. He’s winning puck battles along the wall, both in the defensive zone and in the offensive zone. He’s a dominant force out there.”

McDavid, Draisaitl and Kane have combined for 55 points in 10 games, numbers reminiscent of the Gretzky-led Oilers teams of the 1980s.

As quick as he is to praise McDavid and crew for their offensive abilities, though, coach Jay Woodcroft is just as fast to note their defensive play, especially in this series.

“That line, I think Connor and Leon both finished plus-4,” Woodcroft said. “When our best players are leading the way defensively and setting the tone for what’s expected for the full 200 feet of the rink, I think it makes us a better team.”

What to Expect From Costco Wholesale’s Q3 Earnings?

0

Analysts at Oppenheimer shared their outlook on Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) ahead of the company’s upcoming Q3 earnings results, expected to be released on May 26. Following cost pressures highlighted by Sam’s Club, Target, and BJ’s, the analysts spent time revisiting their upside case.
Costco’s shares lost around 25% since the start of the year. The analysts attribute this to margin concerns and a re-rating of growth names. For Q3, Street estimates appear achievable to the analysts. However, on a go-forward basis, they are trimming their forecasts to reflect increased supply-chain costs that could weigh more meaningfully on at least Q4 with headwinds likely lingering into 2023. Their price target moves to $500 from $645, while the outperform rating is maintained.

Celtics’ Marcus Smart out for Game 4, Robert Williams III available

Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart will miss Monday night’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the visiting Miami Heat due to his sprained right ankle.

Smart sustained the injury in Game 3 and the ankle remained swollen some 48 hours later.

In another note, big man Robert Williams III is set to play after missing Game 3 with his left knee injury.

Miami holds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Smart had 16 points and seven assists in Game 3 for Boston despite briefly leaving the game in the third quarter due to the ankle injury.

Just 63 seconds into the third quarter, Smart was injured while competing for a rebound with Miami’s Kyle Lowry. Smart’s ankle rolled on the floor and Lowry landed on it. Smart grabbed for the ankle and screamed loudly.

Smart returned to the bench area with 7:01 left in the third quarter and re-entered the contest nine seconds later.

Smart missed Game 1 due to a right foot injury but returned with a flourish in Game 2 with 24 points, 12 assists, nine rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes. Smart also made five 3-pointers and committed just one turnover.

Williams was added to the injury report earlier in the day before Game 3 and ruled out close to tipoff.

Williams played in the first two games of the series after a four-game absence due to issues with his left knee.

Williams contributed 18 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 28 minutes in Boston’s Game 1 loss, but had just five points, four rebounds and three blocks in 20 minutes in the Game 2 victory.
