Justin Thomas: ‘Felt like an eternity’ between majors

0

No longer a “one-hit wonder,” Justin Thomas is feeling wonderful after winning his second PGA Championship.

“It was obviously a very fun and whirlwind of a weekend, I guess you could say, but we’ve been working really hard to try to get myself back in that situation, that scenario for a long time, and yeah, the five years has felt like an eternity since Quail Hollow,” Thomas said, referencing the first time he won the Wanamaker Trophy in 2017.

“And yeah, definitely glad that I could finally answer the question of when am I going to get my second versus just being a one-hit wonder, if you will.”

Thomas, 29, was speaking to reporters Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas, as he prepares for this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.

He said there will be more time later to celebrate his come-from-behind victory at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., where he erased a seven-shot deficit with a 67 on Sunday.

“Obviously I want to enjoy it and I don’t want to just act like it didn’t happen because it did, but at the same time I have a week next week off potentially to just enjoy it and have some times with my family and friends if we choose to,” he said.

“I have a golf tournament this week, and I’m just trying to perform and play as well as I possibly can, and hopefully give us something else to celebrate.”

Thomas’ win Sunday was his 15th on the PGA Tour and snapped a 14-month winless drought dating back to the 2021 Players Championship.

Endpoint tab Rejin as new head coach

Allan “Rejin” Petersen was named the new head coach of Endpoint’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team.

Rejin previously served as the head coach at mousesports from April 2019-September 2020 before he was suspended by the Esports Integrity Commission for using the coach bug. The 34-year-old Dane replaces the outgoing Allan “Allan” Hender with Endpoint.

“I’m happy to announce my comeback as a head coach. When Endpoint reached out and told about their project and future, it was a no brainer for me to say yes,” Rejin said, per hltv.org. “I’m so excited to make my comeback on the server and guide the lads to greater success.”

Rejin also addressed his coaching ban.

“I know in many eyes I have betrayed the scene and the community that I dearly love so much,” he said. “I have learned many valuable lessons the past two years. I need to earn my way back, and I will keep grinding and give back to the community.”

Endpoint’s roster consists of Netherlands’ Joey “CRUC1AL” Steusel, United Kingdom’s Max “MiGHTYMAX” Heath and Kia “Surreal” Man and Israel’s Guy “Nertz” Iluz.

DE Jadeveon Clowney officially re-signs with Browns

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the Browns, however multiple media outlets previously reported it was worth $11 million.

Clowney, 29, rebounded from a down season with the Tennessee Titans in 2020 by recording 37 tackles (11 for loss), nine sacks and 19 quarterback hits in 14 games (all starts) with the Browns last season.

Clowney hasn’t been shy about crediting All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett for helping him become a better player.

“We’ve become real good guys and close to each other because we play together,” Clowney said in January. “I pick his brain, and he picks mine. We feed off each other out there. It’s a good thing to have someone on the other end that you don’t worry about. You’re just like, ‘Hey, I will meet you there (at the quarterback).”

Speaking of quarterbacks, Clowney also will be reunited with former Houston Texans teammate Deshaun Watson.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft by Houston, Clowney played with the Texans through the 2018 season. He then played for the Seattle Seahawks (2019) before joining the Titans and Browns.

Clowney was a Pro Bowl selection in each of his final three seasons in Houston, when he totaled 24.5 sacks.

In 97 career games (88 sacks), Clowney has recorded 292 tackles, 41 sacks, 105 QB hits, an interception, 20 passes defensed, 12 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Celtics favored at Heat in pivotal Game 5

It will be the Miami Heat’s chance to turn the tables in the Eastern Conference finals when they play host to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 on Wednesday.

While the series is tied 2-2, it has been anything but a close matchup on a day-by-day basis. Three of the four games have been decided by a double-digit winning margin, including Game 4 on Monday at Boston when the Celtics rode their defense to a 102-82 victory.

That has contributed to Boston being a 2.5-point favorite at DraftKings, where the Celtics have been backed by 73 percent of the spread bets and 80 percent of the handle. The line is 1.5 at BetMGM, where Boston is also drawing heavy support with 70 and 75 percent of the spread action, respectively.

The Celtics’ Game 4 domination came just two days after dropping a 109-103 decision in Game 3, and at home, no less. When Boston fell in the series opener last week at Miami, it was by a 118-107 score.

Both teams were without key players Monday, but the Heat were more out of sync without NBA Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro (groin). The Celtics still were able to do some high-level defending without the league’s Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart (ankle).

“You know, sometimes when you have two really competitive teams, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be a one-point game,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “It means that it can be flammable either way. Both teams are ignitable. Whatever they have done to us, we can do to them.”

If the Heat get burned for a consecutive game, it will leave the Celtics one game from advancing to the NBA Finals with the series shifting to Boston on Friday.

“I think obviously it’s 2-2, so it’s kind of like a new series, best of three,” said the Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, who scored a game-high 31 points in Game 4. “I think just having a conversation that I think human nature plays a part in, when you win a game you can relax a little bit. But obviously when we lose a game, we feel like the next game is do or die.

“I think we have to have that mindset going into Game 5, that it is a must-win game, because (Monday) was essentially something like that.”

Tatum has averaged 24.3 points in the series along with 6.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists. In 15 games during the playoffs, he has put up 27.2 points with 5.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.

But just as Tatum had an off night in Game 3 with 10 points on 3-for-14 shooting, leading to a Celtics defeat, Heat star Jimmy Butler was held to six points in the Game 4 defeat, also on 3-of-14 shooting. Butler scored 41 points in Miami’s series-opening victory, but had just 14 points combined over the two games at Boston on 6-of-22 shooting.

In seven home games during these playoffs, Butler has scored fewer than 21 points just once. It will be Butler’s turn to shine, especially if Herro is unavailable again.

“I don’t think we need to worry about individuals,” Butler said after Miami’s starters combined for 18 points in Game 4. “I think we need to figure out how to win as a team. That’s the most important thing, how to get stops as a team, how to score as a team and continue to do everything as a team.”

Herro, Kyle Lowry (hamstring), Max Strus (hamstring), Gabe Vincent (hamstring) and P.J. Tucker (knee) are all listed by the Heat as questionable for Wednesday. Smart and Robert Williams III (left knee soreness) are questionable for the Celtics.

The Over/Under market is at 203.5 points at BetMGM and slightly higher at 204.0 at DraftKings. The Over has been backed by 82 percent of the bets and 88 percent of the handle at the former and 80 and 84 percent, respectively, at the latter.

OG bench niko from starting lineup

Nikolaj “niko” Kristensen on Wednesday was benched from the starting lineup on OG’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team.

“Sometimes good things must come to an end,” niko wrote on Twitter. “I’ve been allowed to explore my options from OG and ready for a new adventure.

“I have absolutely loved every second of my time with what now feels like a second family and hope to see them center stage in the nearby future.”

niko initially was summoned by OG to replace Nathan “NBK-” Schmitt in March 2021.

The 23-year-old Dane previously served as a stand-in with OG during the DreamHack Masters Spring closed qualifier and in ESL Pro League. He has also participated with Heroic, OpTic Gaming and Rogue, among other teams.

“(niko’s) hard work and passion will not be forgotten,” OG wrote on Twitter.

“Sometimes hard choices have to be made in order to move forward. And it’s always with a broken heart that we have to make them. May our paths cross again very soon.”

OG’s current roster consists of Poland’s Mateusz “mantuu” Wilczewski, Israel’s Shahar “flameZ” Shushan and Serbia’s Nemanja “nexa” Isakovic. Denmark’s Casper “ruggah” Due is the team’s coach while countrymen Valdemar “valde” Bjorn Vangsa and niko are on the bench.

Carlos Alcaraz wins in 4 1/2-hour marathon at French Open

Teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz of Spain outlasted countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a match that lasted more than 4 ½ hours on Wednesday at the French Open in Paris.

The sixth-seeded Alcaraz, 19, took the match 6-1, 6-7 (7), 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in four hours, 34 minutes on the clay at Roland Garros. Alcaraz finished with 74 winners and 74 unforced errors. Alcaraz converted just eight of 31 break-point opportunities.

“I feel tired but it has been a great battle against Albert,” Alcaraz said. “I knew it was going to be a great match, a tough match. We both fought until the last point. I’m so happy with the performance today.

“I feel like being at home. … The support from the beginning until the last ball was unbelievable. It wouldn’t have been possible to win the match without (the crowd) support from the beginning.”

Alcaraz made German Alexander Zverev’s victory in three hours, 36 minutes seem brisk.

The third-seeded Zverev won his match 2-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5, saving match point in the final set against 21-year-old Sebastian Baez of Argentina.

“This is the worst he (Baez) will probably ever feel on a tennis court right now, this moment,” Zverev said. “It was such an incredible match, and I know it just too well because I lost the U.S. Open final from being two sets to love up. You always get better from it and I wish him nothing but the best. He’s an unbelievably great kid, and he’s going to do a lot of great things in this sport, I think.”

Zverev finished with 12 aces.

No. 15 seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina was also in a marathon, needing to rally from two sets down to defeat Spain’s Jaume Munar 2-6, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in nearly four hours.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 5 Rafael Nadal were also winners in straight sets.

Djokovic defeated Slovakian Alex Molcan 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance. Nadal beat Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 for the 300th career Grand Slam match win. Nadal joined Roger Federer and Djokovic as the only men to reach the milestone.

Ninth-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime won in straight sets, as did No. 10 Cameron Norrie of Great Britain.

No. 13 Taylor Fritz fell to Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, 3-6.

Other seeded players to win and advance Wednesday included Americans No. 27 Sebastian Korda and No. 23 John Isner, No. 18 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, and No. 26 Botic Van De Zandschulp of Netherlands.

Steve Stricker withdrew from this week’s Senior PGA Championship after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Super bummed that I tested positive for Covid on Friday and have to withdraw,” he posted Tuesday on Twitter. “… Just a small setback and will look forward to getting back after it when I feel strong again!”

The season’s second PGA Tour Champions major begins Thursday at Harbor Shores Resort in Benton Harbor, Mich.

It was the victorious 2021 Ryder Cup captain’s eighth win on the PGA Tour Champions to go with 12 career titles on the PGA Tour.

Last fall, Stricker battled a life-threatening illness and was away from the game for six months. He was hospitalized twice and lost 25-35 pounds, according to Golfweek.

Williams-Sonoma Q1 Earnings Preview

0

RBC Capital analysts released their outlook on Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) ahead of the company’s Q1 results, expecting a solid quarter, but being cautious on the outlook. The analysts estimate comp sales of +0.5% (vs. Street’s +2.7%) and EPS of $2.81 (Street’s $2.85).
While the company’s strong February and order backlog should drive continued top-line momentum, the analysts said that peer read thrus suggest category demand began to slow in March/April. The analysts remain of the view that go-forward revenue growth/margins will be structurally higher than pre-pandemic levels, but are cautious about the company’s near-term prospects as they are not immune from the macro pressures impacting the retail space.
