Rockies send Kris Bryant back to IL, recall RHP Ryan Feltner

The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a lower back strain.

The move is retroactive to May 23 for Bryant, who came off the injured list prior to Colorado’s doubleheader against the New York Mets on Saturday. He previously went on the injured list on April 29.

Also, the Rockies recalled right-hander Ryan Feltner from Triple-A Albuquerque to start Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was summoned as a replacement for Antonio Senzatela, who is nursing a lower back strain.

Bryant, 30, is hitting .270 (17-for-63) with no home runs, four doubles and four RBIs in 17 games this season.

The Rockies signed the former National League MVP and four-time All-Star to a seven-year, $182 million contract during the offseason.

Feltner, 25, was saddled with the loss in his lone appearance with the Rockies this season. He allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 27.

Report: Two Toronto Defiant players request trades

0

Toronto Defiant Tank Young-Hun “MuZe” Kim and DPS Jung-Woo “Finale” Lim have reportedly requested trades.

“Multiple sources have told (us) that a number of incidents behind the scenes have caused instability in the Defiant camp in recent weeks,” Dexerto reported Wednesday.

The relationship between MuZe and head coach Ding-Gun “KDG” Kim has reached a “breaking point,” while Finale wants out because of a lack of playing time, per the report.

South Koreans MuZe and Finale, both 19, joined the Defiant in October and December 2021, respectively. MuZe was previously with Los Angeles Gladiators and Finale was with Uprising Academy.

Toronto currently sits in seventh place in the West in the Kickoff Clash qualifiers with a 3-2 record. The Defiant’s final qualifier is on Friday against the New York Excelsior.

Report: Colts CB Kenny Moore sits seeking new contract

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore is unhappy with his contract and not participating in OTA practices, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

The practices are voluntary, meaning Moore cannot be fined for staying away.

Moore, 26, has two years remaining on a four-year, $33.3 million contract he signed prior to the 2019 season.

His average salary of $8.325 million ranks 27th among NFL cornerbacks, according to overthecap.com.

Moore earned his first Pro Bowl selection last season with a career-high 102 tackles, four interceptions and 13 passes defensed in 17 games (16 starts).

Undrafted in 2017, Moore has registered 14 interceptions, four forced fumbles and seven sacks in 75 games (61 starts) with the Colts.

Arizona lands top international prospect Henri Veesaar

Lanky Estonian 7-footer Henri Veesaar committed to Arizona and head coach Tommy Lloyd on Wednesday, the 18-year-old told ESPN.

Veesaar was a member of Estonia’s national team at 17 and played for Real Madrid at the U16 level.

The NBA-minded Veesaar could help the Wildcats recover from losing Bennedict Mathurin, Dalen Terry and Christian Koloko to the draft. All three are expected to remain in the 2022 NBA Draft but can opt to return until the June 1 deadline.

“I believe in [coach] Tommy Lloyd’s philosophy and how he coaches,” Veesaar said in an ESPN interview. “I’ve had my eyes on playing college basketball for some time now, and I believe that Arizona is a great fit to make a jump between youth and professional sport.”

Veesaar is expected to be on campus in early August and join Arizona’s basketball workouts after playing for Estonia this summer.

He’s one of eight international players listed on Arizona’s 2022-23 roster and said “it helps to fit on the team not being the only foreigner.”

Panthers’ Joe Thornton undecided on NHL future

Veteran center Joe Thornton saw the Florida Panthers’ season come to an abrupt end earlier this week.

Thornton, however, wasn’t so quick to close the book on his NHL career Wednesday.

“My wife was kind of asking me last night,” Thornton said. “And really, I have no plans. It’s kind of exciting that way. I came here to win a championship, and we fell short of that. But I think the Florida Panthers are going to be good for a long time. It’s exciting around here now.”

Thornton’s 24th NHL season came to a halt after the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Panthers were on the business end of a four-game sweep by the Tampa Bay Lightning in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Thornton, who turns 43 on July 2, said Wednesday that he isn’t putting a timeline on making a decision on his NHL career.

“I’ve been privileged to play this game for a long time,” Thornton said. “I don’t take anything for granted.”

Thornton recorded 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 34 games with the Panthers after signing a one-year contract last August.

The recipient of the Hart and Art Ross trophies in 2005-06, Thornton has collected 1,539 points (430 goals, 1,109 assists) in 1,714 career games with the Boston Bruins (1997-2005), San Jose Sharks (2005-20), Toronto Maple Leafs (2020-21) and Panthers. He was selected by Boston with the first overall pick of the 1997 NHL Draft.

He began his NHL career with the Bruins before being traded to the Sharks for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart in November 2005.

Thornton captured an Olympic gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Games. He also was part of two championship teams in the World Cup of Hockey (2004, 2016).

Hurricanes back home, out to stunt Rangers’ momentum

For every bit as good as the Carolina Hurricanes looked in winning all six home games of the current playoffs, they have skated away with a loss in all five contests away from Raleigh, N.C.

Carolina hopes to morph back into the good doctor at home on Thursday when it plays Game 5 of its Eastern Conference semifinal series against the New York Rangers.

The Hurricanes won the first two contests at home in the best-of-seven series before the Rangers stormed back to even the series after a pair of games at New York.

Carolina has outscored the opposition by a 22-7 margin at home in the playoffs and boasts a 94.1 percent penalty kill in its own building. Conversely, the Hurricanes have been outscored 21-8 on the road and are just 16-for-23 on the penalty kill (69.6 percent) following Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to New York.

“I am confident eventually they are going to find their way to the back of the net,” Carolina’s Sebastian Aho said. “We just have to find ways to score. We got to score on the power play.”

Carolina failed on both opportunities with the man advantage Tuesday and are 0-for-9 in the series. Igor Shesterkin is responsible for a significant portion of the Hurricanes’ troubles, as the Rangers’ Hart and Vezina Trophy finalist has yielded just one goal in each of his last three games and a total of five on 122 shots in the series.

“What’re you going to do? You have to keep getting the chances. I’m happy that we’re creating offense,” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “(Shesterkin) played well. You have to give him a ton of credit. But the (poor) start is what did it to us.”

The Rangers scored twice in the first period and Mika Zibanejad tallied for the second straight game, when he added on in the second period, to send the Rangers on their way to their fifth consecutive home victory.

Zibanejad’s five goals are one shy of Chris Kreider for the team lead in the playoffs. Zibanejad also has a club-best 14 points in two playoff series, with 10 of those points (five goals, five assists) coming in his past six games.

Trade-deadline acquisitions Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano and Tyler Motte also made their presence felt on Tuesday. Copp recorded one goal and two assists, Vatrano had one of each and Motte provided spirited play after being elevated to the third line.

“In the playoffs and in the regular season, they came in and were big factors,” Rangers defenseman Adam Fox said. “It’s guys with experience and guys who know how to play the right way.

“Up front, you could see what Copper and Frank are able to do. They’re skill players, and you can see the jolt of energy we get from Motter when he’s in. He’s, I think, an underrated part of what we’ve been doing here in the playoffs. When he came back, it seems like defensively he’s all over the ice and killing penalties is huge.”

Carolina could face a goaltending dilemma for Game 5.

Former Rangers backup Antti Raanta is 5-4 for the Hurricanes in the playoffs with a 2.09 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. But regular starter Frederik Andersen has been skating on his own as he bids to make a return from a lower-body injury.

“I’ll tell you when he’s an option, how about that?” Brind’Amour said of Andersen, who sported a 35-14-3 record, a career-best 2.17 GAA and a .922 save percentage during the regular season.

Steelers name Omar Khan as general manager

Omar Khan was promoted to general manager by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday.

Khan, 45, has been with the Steelers since 2001. He has served as the team’s vice president of football and business administration for the past six seasons.

Khan signed a four-year contract and replaces the retiring Kevin Colbert, who had been the team’s GM since 2010. Colbert, 65, had been with the organization for 22 seasons.

“I am pleased to announce Omar Khan as our next General Manager,” team president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “Omar has been an integral part of our Football Operations Department during his 21 years with the team, and that experience will serve him well in his new position.”

Rooney said that Khan was one of six finalists for the position following a months-long search process that included two rounds of interviews.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Khan sid. “I would like to thank Art Rooney II, Mike Tomlin, and Kevin Colbert for their support throughout this process. I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had on the field during my first 21 years. I look forward to completing our football operations staff and working tirelessly to build another championship football team for Steelers Nation and our community.”

Khan previously worked with the New Orleans Saints from 1997-2000.

The Steelers also hired Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl as their assistant general manager, per multiple reports.
