Former Kentucky player Reggie Warford dies at 67

Reggie Warford, the second Black men’s player in Kentucky history, died Thursday. He was 67.

Warford reportedly battled various health problems, including kidney and heart issues, over the past several years.

Warford played for Kentucky from 1972-76 and scored 206 total points in 50 games. He scored most of those points as a senior when he averaged 6.5 points in 28 games.

Warford later served as an assistant coach at Long Beach State, Iowa State and Pittsburgh. Current Kentucky coach John Calipari was on the same staff at Pitt in the late 1980s.

“Reggie Warford passed away this morning at home surrounded by his loving family,” Calipari said on Twitter. “I know how much Reggie meant to Kentucky & how he inspired others. “Reggie and I worked together at Pitt in the 80s and have remained friends. I’m going to miss my brother, may God bless you Reggie.”

Warford was the first Black men’s player to graduate from Kentucky.

Thomas Payne was the first Black player for Kentucky and spent the 1970-71 season at the school.

Sugar Bowl moved to Dec. 31 to avoid TV conflict with ‘MNF’

The Sugar Bowl will be played on New Year’s Eve at 12 noon ET on Dec. 31 next season, rather than in its regular primetime TV slot.

The bowl game is normally held on New Year’s Day, which will fall on a Sunday in 2023. But it could not be moved to Monday, Jan. 2 with other bowl games because ESPN owns the broadcast rights and had a conflict with its “Monday Night Football” game, an AFC tilt between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.

Instead, the Sugar Bowl — held in New Orleans and usually pitting representatives of the SEC and Big 12 — will stay back on Dec. 31 and kick off at 11 a.m. local time.

Next season’s two College Football Playoff semifinal games, the Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl, will follow that day at 4 and 8 p.m. ET in some order.

The Orange Bowl will be played Dec. 30, but that isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Miami-based game that features the ACC champion. The two other traditional New Year’s Day bowls — the Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl — will be played during the day on Jan. 2.

Yankees’ Josh Donaldson apologizes to Robinson family

New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson broke his silence and issued an apology to the family of Jackie Robinson as part of a statement released by the team Thursday morning.

“First and foremost, I have the utmost respect for what Tim Anderson brings to the game of baseball. I stated over the weekend that I apologized for offending Tim and that it was a misunderstanding based on multiple exchanges between us over the years. My view of that exchange hasn’t changed and I absolutely meant no disrespect. In the past, it had never been an issue and now that it is, we have a mutual understanding,” the statement read. “I would also like to apologize to Mrs. Rachel Robinson and the Jackie Robinson family for any distress this incident may have caused. Jackie was a true American hero and I hold his name in the highest regard.”

Donaldson was suspended one game for what he claimed was an “inside joke” with White Sox infielder Tim Anderson. Donaldson on Saturday said he jokingly called Anderson “Jackie” in the past. Anderson said Donaldson was taunting, not joking, when he made the reference in a weekend series with the White Sox.

“In 2019, I know he did say that,” Anderson said on Tuesday. “I told him that we don’t ever have to talk again. And I won’t speak to you, you won’t speak to me if that’s how you’re gonna refer to me. And I know he knew exactly what he was doing.”

Donaldson, in his first season with the Yankees, is currently on the injured list due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Report: Georgia, Kirby Smart nearing contract extension

National championship-winning coach Kirby Smart and Georgia are nearing a contract extension, according to multiple reports.

While university president Jere Morehead declined to attach a figure to what is expected to be a huge contract, he told The Athletic, “I don’t think anyone will be surprised.”

Morehead gave the school’s athletic board an update in executive session on Thursday.

Smart is under contract through the 2024 season at about $7 million a year.

Smart, 46, took over the program at his alma mater in 2016 and has a 66-15 record, including 6-2 in bowl games. He has a 40-10 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

The Bulldogs lost to Alabama in the College Football Playoff following the 2017 season, and defeated the Crimson Tide 33-18 in January to win the school’s first football national championship in 41 years.

Georgia opens the 2022 season against Oregon on Sept. 3.

Alonzo Highsmith leaves Seahawks for Miami role

Seattle Seahawks scouting exec Alonzo Highsmith will be moving to the opposite corner of the country, back to his home and alma mater, having accepted a role as general manager of football operations for the Miami.

The longtime NFL executive is a member of the Miami Sports Hall of Fame. He finished his college career with 2,935 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns, and helped lead the Hurricanes to the 1983 national championship.

“Alonzo is a true Miami Hurricane,” said Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. “Alonzo brings experience as a student-athlete, a first-round NFL draft pick and an NFL executive. He shares our vision for the trajectory and the culture of this football program, and his knowledge and experience will allow him to make a positive and powerful impact on our program and community.”

Highsmith will work directly with Cristobal to support all administrative functions of the football program, from budget related items to culture building. He will also be a liaison between the administration and the football program and between former Miami players and staff.

Additionally, he will assist with scouting and roster assessment and supervise NFL relations.

Heat G Tyler Herro (groin) questionable for Game 6

Miami Heat reserve guard Tyler Herro is listed as questionable for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals after missing the past two games with a left groin strain.

The Heat lost both games without Herro, who is the NBA Sixth Man of the Year this season. Miami averaged 81 points in the two setbacks to see the Boston Celtics take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Boston can clinch a berth in the NBA Finals when the teams meet Friday night on the Celtics’ home floor.

Herro is averaging 13.5 points and shooting just 23.2 percent from 3-point range in 14 games this postseason. In the regular season, he averaged 20.7 points and shot 39.9 percent from behind the arc.

Also notable is that Miami star Jimmy Butler is no longer listed on the injury report. Butler missed the second half of Game 3 with right knee inflammation and struggled in the past two games.

After averaging 35 points in the first two games, Butler has averaged nine in the past three. He was a combined 7-of-32 shooting across Games 4 and 5.

In addition to Herro, Miami listed four other players as questionable: guards Kyle Lowry (left hamstring), Max Strus (right hamstring) and Gabe Vincent (left hamstring) as well as forward P.J. Tucker (left knee).

Strus has missed all 16 of his field-goal attempts over the past two games while Lowry is 1-for-12.

Irina-Camelia Begu apologizes after bouncing racket hits kid

Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu apologized Thursday after tossing her tennis racket in frustration and having it hit a child in the crowd during her French Open match in Paris.

Begu was near the bench area during the third game of the third set against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia when she tossed the racket downward on the clay surface. The racket took a big hop and struck a child sitting close to the court.

Begu checked on the youngster before play resumed and she went on to a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 victory over the 30th-seeded Alexandrova.

The 31-year-old Begu received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“It’s an embarrassing moment for me, so I don’t want to talk too much about it,” Begu said afterward. “I just want to apologize. My whole career I didn’t do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry.

“So I’m just going to say again, sorry for the incident and, yeah, it was just an embarrassing moment for me. You hit the clay with the racket, but you never expect it to fly that much.”

After winning the match, Begu went over to interact with the child. The pair hugged and she posed for a picture with the child. Then she went back to her bench seat and appeared to be sobbing into a towel.

Alexandrova was upset that Begu wasn’t disqualified from the match and she sharply criticized the situation at Roland Garros later on her Instagram account.

“So disappointed to leave RG like that, I was trying to do my best, but seems like the rules were against me today,” Alexandrova said. “This shouldn’t be happening. I hope after today’s match rules will be improved for everyone’s safety.

“We are responsible for our racket.”

Begu will face France’s Leolia Jeanjean in the third round.

Pelicans: Zion Williamson can return to play without restrictions

The New Orleans Pelicans said Thursday that star big man Zion Williamson was cleared to return to play without restrictions.

According to recent imaging work done on Williamson’s foot, the right fifth metatarsal bone was showing “continued improvement,” the Pelicans said.

Williamson missed the entire 2021-22 season while recovering from offseason foot surgery. He was on track to return early in the campaign, at one point being cleared for full basketball activities. But soreness returned and Pelicans doctors found in December that imaging “showed a regression in the bone healing.”

The No. 1 pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, Williamson has played just 85 games (all starts) for the Pelicans. He missed the first three months of the 2019-20 season due to a knee injury.

Williamson was an All-Star in the 2020-21 season, when he averaged 27.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in 61 contests. He has career averages of 25.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

The former Duke star told reporters last month that he would not hesitate to sign an extension with New Orleans, saying “I couldn’t sign it fast enough.”

Top seed Iga Swiatek rolls into French Open third round

Top-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland cruised into the third round of the French Open on Thursday with a straight-sets win over Alison Riske.

Swiatek needed just 61 minutes to oust Riske 6-0, 6-2. Swiatek won 84.6 percent of her first serves in a commanding performance and extended her winning streak to 30 matches.

“I’m going to reach a point where I’m going to lose a match, and it’s pretty normal,” the red-hot Swiatek said after the victory. “I have been losing matches in tennis for a long time. For sure, the things we are doing right now are pretty extraordinary, but I know in tennis that only one person wins at the end. I will be OK with that.”

No. 3 seed Paula Badosa of Spain also advanced but didn’t get through quite as easily. Badosa had to fight off Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 in two hours, 17 minutes. Badosa finished with 35 winners against 25 unforced errors and converted 6 of 9 break point opportunities.

Shelby Rogers upset No. 9 Danielle Collins in a battle of Americans, 6-4, 6-3 in 76 minutes. Rogers broke Collins six times in 11 attempts to advance to the third round.

“It’s always good to move through without too much drama … there were little momentum shifts today, but not too much drama,” Rogers told Tennis Channel. “I felt like she started serving a little bit better (from 4-0). I made a couple of mistakes and felt like my energy dropped a little bit. I made it a point to get some positive self-talk going, jump around a little bit, get myself into the match again.”

France’s Alize Cornet ousted No. 13 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. Cornet smashed five aces, saved seven of 11 break points and broke Ostapenko six times in seven opportunities to knock out the 2017 French Open champ.

Another former champion also fell Thursday as Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen upset No. 19 Simona Halep of Romania 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to claim her first victory over a Top 20 player. Zheng is playing in just the second grand slam of her career. Zheng recorded 27 winners to just nine for Halep.

Eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic also fell, losing to Leolia Jeanjean of France 6-2, 6-2. Jeanjean fended off the only two breaks she faced while breaking Pliskova’s serve four times in seven tries.

“This match was full of emotions through and through. I managed to unroll my tactics to make her move back and forth, to put spin on my ball.” Jeanjean said. “It’s incredible thinking that I actually won in two sets against a Top 10 player, a previous No.1 worldwide. It’s incredible.”

No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka easily dispatched Madison Brengle 6-1, 6-3 in 62 minutes.

Other seeded winners included No. 11 Jessica Pegula, No. 16 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, No. 20 Daria Kasatkina of Russia, No. 22 Madison Keys, No. 28 Camila Giorgi of Italy and No. 29 Veronika Kudermetova of Russia.
