Padres hope to produce more runs vs. Jose Quintana, Pirates

The San Diego Padres consistently play winning ball against teams with losing records.

They swept all six games against Cincinnati. They’ve won three of their four games against the Miami Marlins. They won two of three against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Now the Pirates head to San Diego for a three-game visit this weekend as the Padres try to rebound from two straight losses to the Milwaukee Brewers while hoping to get some bats in action.

The series marks the first half of a Pirates’ trip to the West Coast that concludes with three games against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Pirates flew west after defeating Colorado 10-5 Wednesday to complete a 2-4 homestand, while the Padres scored just five runs on 22 hits in losing two of three games at home to the Brewers.

Jose Quintana (1-2, 2.43 ERA) will start for the Pirates Friday night against the Padres’ Sean Manaea (2-3, 4.04) in a matchup of left-handers. Both Quintana and Manaea will be making their ninth starts of the season.

The Pirates have won three of the last four games started by the 33-year-old Quintana, who has a 1.66 ERA and a 1.062 WHIP in May. This month, Quintana has allowed seven runs (four earned) on 16 hits and seven walks with 17 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

“It starts with pitching and Jose has been throwing the ball really well,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said.

Included in Quintana’s May run was a six-inning shutout effort against the Dodgers, when he allowed two hits and four walks.

“He neutralized one of the best offense in the major leagues,” said Shelton.

Quintana has faced the Padres six times (four starts) over the past five seasons with a 2-0 record despite a 6.20 ERA and a 1.500 WHIP. In two relief appearances for the Giants against the Padres last season, Quintana gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.

After going 2-1 in three quality starts to start the season, Manaea has given up 20 runs (19 earned) in 30 innings in his last five starts, in which the Padres have gone 1-4. He has given up four home runs over 19 innings in his three starts in May.

Manaea is not the Padres’ main concern. The offense is.

“Last Sunday, we had an excellent offensive game in San Francisco,” said Padres manager Bob Melvin. “Although it’s been a bit of a struggle the last couple games, I’ve seen good signs.”

Pittsburgh’s Shelton could say the same about a pair of hitters who were once in the Padres’ system.

Outfielder Jack Suwinski and second baseman Josh VanMeter each had a home run and three RBIs in the 10-5 win over the Rockies Wednesday. Suwinski leads National League rookies with five home runs despite being in the majors less than a month.

“It’s been a pretty crazy month for sure,” Suwinski said. “It’s been great, just the adjustment and learning and being able to talk to the guys here about baseball.”

Natisha Hiedeman shines in Sun’s blowout of Wings

Natisha Hiedeman recorded 17 points, six assists and three steals to lead the Connecticut Sun to a 99-68 victory over the Dallas Wings on Thursday night at Uncasville, Conn.

Hiedeman also made four 3-pointers and committed one turnover in 31 minutes. The strong effort came in her second straight start after point guard Jasmine Thomas was lost for the season with a torn ACL in her right knee.

DeWanna Bonner scored a team-high 18 points as Connecticut (5-2) led most of the way. Brionna Jones tallied 15 points, DiJonai Carrington added 13 and Jonquel Jones had 12 for the Sun.

Satou Sabally scored 18 points for Dallas (5-3), which had a three-game winning streak halted. Arike Ogunbowale had 16 points and Allisha Gray added 11.

The triumph gave the Sun a split of the two-game set. Dallas recovered from a 12-point halftime deficit on Tuesday to post an 85-77 victory.

The Wings again trailed by 12 at the break on Thursday, but there was no such comeback as they had just 33 second-half points on Thursday after pouring in 58 two nights earlier.

Connecticut shot 48.6 percent from the field, including 6 of 21 from 3-point range.

Dallas made 36.9 percent of its shots and was 10 of 30 from behind the arc. The Wings scored 18 or fewer points in each quarter.

Dallas was within 10 after Sabally’s basket with 2:43 left in the third quarter. But Connecticut responded with the next 10 points to make it 70-50. Hiedeman and Bonner each hit 3-pointers during the burst.

The Sun led 70-52 entering the final stanza and kept the throttle down. Hiedeman drained another trey to make it a 23-point margin in the first minute and Bonner and Jonquel Jones converted back-to-back baskets to make it 81-54 with 6:06 left to play.

The Sun closed the first half with a 15-3 burst to hold a 47-35 lead at the break. Jonquel Jones had six points and Bonner added five during the stretch.

Dallas trailed 24-17 after the opening quarter and took its only lead at 27-26 on Sabally’s 3-pointer with 6:48 left in the half.

NetApp Q4 Earnings Preview

0

Deutsche Bank analysts released their outlook on NetApp, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) ahead of the company’s Q4 earnings report, expecting in-line results while noting that supply and logistics challenges could still be a headwind.
The analysts believe the outlook for gross margin to decline about 300 basic points quarter-over-quarter is sufficiently de-risked. Looking forward, considering the healthy demand environment. The analysts expect Q1 revenue growth to be roughly in line with normal seasonality, although hardware availability could limit sales of storage products, as recently highlighted by Nutanix, Inc.

Five-star Elijah Fisher commits to Texas Tech, will reclassify

Elijah Fisher, a five-star small forward prospect from Canada, committed to Texas Tech on Thursday and said he will reclassify in order to join the program next season.

Fisher was the No. 24 overall prospect in the Class of 2023, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

The 6-foot-7 native of Oshawa, Ontario, picked the Red Raiders over three other high-profile finalists: Kentucky, Louisville and Memphis.

Fisher represented Canada at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Championship and helped the nation win the bronze medal, putting up a 6.9 scoring average.

Texas Tech expanded its incoming freshman class to four players, as Fisher joined four-star prospects Richard Isaacs and Lamar Washington and three-star Robert Jennings.

Box Shares Up 5% Following Q1 Earnings Announcement

0

Box (NYSE: BOX) shares rose around 5% today following the company’s reported Q1 results, with revenue growing 18% year-over-year to $238.4 million, beating the Street estimate of $234.56 million. EPS was $0.23, compared to the Street estimate of $0.25.
Analysts at Oppenheimer shared their views on the company following the earnings announcement. While the macro environment could add more variability to coming quarters, the analysts continue to believe the company’s mature business model is better suited than most to manage through the headwinds, especially considering its strengthening value proposition with Box Shield and Sign, and new additions like Canvas.
The analysts are also comfortable with management’s ability to deliver operating margin improvement, while prudently investing in long-term opportunities.
The company provided its Q2/23 guidance, anticipating EPS to be in the range of $0.27-$0.28, compared to the Street estimate of $0.27, and revenue in the range of $244-246 million, compared to the Street estimate of $243.7 million.

Oilers KO Flames on Connor McDavid’s OT goal

Connor McDavid’s goal 5:03 into overtime gave the visiting Edmonton Oilers a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday and sends them to the Western Conference final.

Darnell Nurse, Jesse Puljujarvi, Zach Hyman and Evan Bouchard also scored for the Oilers, who erased yet another multi-goal deficit en route to claiming the best-of-seven series in five games. Edmonton goaltender Mike Smith made 32 saves.

Leon Draisaitl collected four assists, giving him at least three points in five consecutive games, an NHL playoff record. Draisaitl collected 17 points in the series.

In overtime, McDavid took a feed from Draisaitl in the slot and ripped a shot off the post and in for his seventh goal of the playoffs.

The tally gave McDavid his only point of the night.

“I was bad all night,” the Edmonton captain said. “I was riding the coattails of my teammates and got a great opportunity, and so I’m happy to contribute.”

The Oilers, who are headed to the conference finals for the first time since 2006, will face the winner of the Avalanche-Blues series. Colorado leads St. Louis 3-2 entering Game 6 on Friday in Missouri.

McDavid said of getting to the West finals, “It means everything to me and this group. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, and this is one of the ups.”

Andrew Mangiapane, Mikael Backlund, Johnny Gaudreau and Calle Jarnkrok scored for the Flames, while goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots. Backlund also had an assist, and Blake Coleman had two helpers.

The finish capped yet another crazy clash. Just like the first two games in Calgary, the hosts blew a 2-0 lead — though the Flames did recover to win Game 1.

“The goal was to win a series. We hadn’t won a round for a long time, so we won a round and ran out of ammo in this series,” said Flames coach Darryl Sutter.

“The best player won the series for them,” he said, adding that if Calgary scores “a big goal in games 2, 4 and 5 (which were all tied in the third period), we extend the series.”

Mangiapane’s third goal of the playoffs opened the scoring Thursday just past the midway point of the first period, and Backlund’s deflection tally doubled the lead 5:41 into the second period, his fifth of the playoffs.

Then it was Edmonton’s turn to lead. Nurse converted a one-timer from the high slot two minutes later for his second of the playoffs, and Puljujarvi netted his second of the postseason at 9:56 of the second period.

Hyman’s power-play goal put the Oilers ahead with 5:03 left in the second period, giving him a goal in five straight games. The tally started a wild outburst.

Gaudreau replied 15 seconds later, his third of the playoffs. Jarnkrok put Calgary ahead 4-3 when he buried a shot 16 seconds after that — his first goal since being acquired at the trade deadline.

However, Bouchard tied the score 40 seconds later with his third of the playoffs. The 71-second spree set a league record for the fastest four goals in an NHL playoff game.

For the Flames, the loss was controversial. Coleman appeared to score a go-ahead goal late in regulation, but upon review, it was ruled he kicked in the puck.

Splunk Inc Shares Surge 9% Following Q1 Results

0

Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLK) shares closed more than 9% higher on Thursday following the company’s reported Q1 results, with EPS coming in at ($0.32), better than the Street estimate of ($0.74). Revenue was $674 million, compared to the Street estimate of $628.75 million.
Better-than-expected quarterly results were driven by strong license revenue and consistent cloud growth. The strong license outperformance was driven by multiple large deals, and cloud revenue growth was driven by broad-based adoption of Splunk’s cloud platform.

Klay Thompson, Warriors close out Mavs, seal Finals bid

The Golden State Warriors will be headed down a familiar path next week.

And now they’ve shown the up-and-coming Dallas Mavericks the road.

Klay Thompson matched his season playoff-high with 32 points as the Warriors captured the Western Conference crown and earned their sixth trip to the NBA Finals in the last eight years with a 120-110 victory over the Mavericks in Game 5 on Thursday night in San Francisco.

The 2015, 2017 and 2018 NBA champs thus earned the right to go for another title in the best-of-seven NBA Finals, which will open in San Francisco on June 2.

Kevon Looney dominated the boards with a game-high 18 rebounds to help the Warriors, in their second opportunity, close out the Mavericks with a 4-1 triumph in the best-of-seven Western Conference finals.

“It was a helluva series,” assured Warriors coach Steve Kerr, whose teams have not lost a playoff series to a Western foe since he took over in 2015. “We had to battle like crazy, and we’re thrilled to have won.”

Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins chipped in with 18 points, Draymond Green 17, Jordan Poole 16 and series Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry 15 in a balanced effort.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Kerr gushed. “It’s so difficult to get to the Finals. It’s frankly exhausting, stressful, emotions, physically tiring … all of that.

“For our team, our guys, especially the core group (of Thompson, Green, Curry and Andre Iguodala) to be a part of that six times in eight years … I don’t know what to say. It just takes an enormous amount of skill and determination and work, and I couldn’t be prouder of our guys.”

Luka Doncic had 28 points and Spencer Dinwiddie 26 for the Mavericks, who used a 15-0 run late in the third quarter to give themselves a chance after falling behind by as many as 25 points.

Poole ended the flurry and closed the third period with a layup that gave Golden State a 94-84 lead. When Wiggins and Green opened the final quarter with consecutive hoops, the Warriors began printing tickets to their first NBA Finals appearance since a loss to the Toronto Raptors in 2019.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t play our best game, and the season ended,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “We tip our hat to Golden State, but we accomplished a lot. It doesn’t mean we had a bad season. We just had a bad night.

“It means a lot (just to get to this point), especially with where we’ve been in the past. We’d be on our second vacation by now. This is just the start of an era.”

Thompson, who blew out his knee in the 2019 Raptors series and missed the entire 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, bombed in eight of his 16 3-point attempts and shot 12-for-25 overall in nearly doubling his previous high in the series, which had been 19 in Game 3.

He nearly cried in an on-court interview with TNT after the win.

“I’m just so happy to be back,” he declared. “I’m so thankful for this team. These guys carried us to an incredible start. Then me coming back in there …

“I can’t believe we’re back (in the Finals). It’s crazy. I’m going to enjoy it tonight. Wow, we still have four more (wins) to go. I’m going to soak this in tonight.”

Looney’s rebound total included seven at the offensive end, helping Golden State to a commanding 51-34 edge overall and a 14-6 advantage in offensive boards. He also found time for 10 points, his second double-double of the series.

Wiggins also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds to complement his 18 points, while Curry collected nine assists to go with his 15 points. Green had nine assists and six rebounds to complement his 2022 postseason-high point total.

With Green hitting six of his seven shots, Poole six of his eight and Looney five of his eight, the Warriors outshot the Mavericks 51.1 percent to 45.1 percent.

Dallas had the edge in 3-point scoring, thanks in large part to Dinwiddie’s 5-for-7 success from beyond the arc. The Mavericks shot 17-for-42 on 3-point tries, outscoring Golden State 51-42 from deep.

Doncic was harassed into just 10-for-28 shooting overall and 3-for-13 on 3-point attempts en route to his team-high point total. He also had team-highs in rebounds with nine and assists with six.

“We can all agree this wasn’t his best game,” Kidd said. “This is a great lesson for him. We need him to go big a lot of nights just to give us a chance. Unfortunately, the shots didn’t fall for him tonight.”

Dorian Finney-Smith had 13 points and Jalen Brunson 10 for Dallas, which lost all three games at Golden State in the series.

Hurricanes go up 3-2 on Rangers, keep home playoff record pristine

Teuvo Teravainen scored a power-play goal midway into the second period to fuel the host Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Raleigh, N.C.

Andrei Svechnikov and Vincent Trocheck also scored and Antti Raanta made 16 saves for the Hurricanes, who hold a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 6 is Saturday in New York.

Carolina improved to 7-0 at home in the playoffs, outscoring the opposition 25-8 in games in Raleigh.

Mika Zibanejad scored a goal in his third straight game and Igor Shesterkin turned aside 31 shots for New York.

Ranger star Chris Kreider was held without a shot Thursday and has registered just one in three road games in this series. Kreider had a career-best 52 goals in the regular season, and he has a team-high-tying six in the playoffs.

New York appeared to take a 2-1 lead early in the second period after Ryan Strome’s turnaround shot from the left circle sailed between Raanta’s pads. The goal was negated, however, after Carolina successfully challenged that Rangers forward Andrew Copp was offside prior to Strome’s tally.

The Hurricanes seized a 2-1 advantage at 9:47 after rookie Seth Jarvis’ diagonal pass found Teravainen, who unleashed a one-timer deep in the left circle that passed Shesterkin. Teravainen’s goal was his fourth of the playoffs and second in as many games.

Teravainen has recorded a point in a franchise-best seven straight home games to begin the postseason.

Svechnikov fended off New York defenseman Adam Fox and sent a backhand shot between Shesterkin’s pads to double the advantage with 6:59 remaining in the third period.

Trocheck recorded his first point of the series at 12:57 of the first period after Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba committed a turnover in the neutral zone during a New York power play. Carolina captain Jordan Staal skated in on a two-on-one rush before lifting a saucer pass that Trocheck converted at the right post.

New York had better results on its next power-play opportunity, as Zibanejad won an offensive-zone faceoff and one-timed a pass from Artemi Panarin past Raanta. Zibanejad’s goal was his sixth of the playoffs.
