Freddie Freeman powers Dodgers’ rout of D-backs

Freddie Freeman went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers recorded a season-high 24 hits in a 14-1 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday in Phoenix.

Chris Taylor went 3-for-6 with a homer, a double and three RBIs; Cody Bellinger had three hits and three RBIs; and Mookie Betts had three hits and three runs for Los Angeles, which led 6-0 after two innings.

Will Smith contributed two hits and two RBIs as the Dodgers set a season high for runs scored and won for the 10th time in the past 12 games. Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

Dodgers right-hander Mitch White allowed two hits over four scoreless innings in his second start of the season. Justin Bruhl (1-1) earned his first career victory after tossing a scoreless fifth inning.

Christian Walker homered for Arizona, which has lost six of its first eight meetings with the Dodgers this season.

Diamondbacks starter Humberto Castellanos (3-2) began the game by allowing a run on back-to-back doubles by Betts and Freeman. After Turner flied out, Freeman scored on Smith’s single.

Los Angeles extended its lead with four runs in the second. Taylor doubled in a run and Betts drew a one-out walk before Freeman’s three-run homer put the Dodgers ahead 6-0.

The 389-foot blast to right field was Freeman’s fourth homer of the season and first since April 24.

Castellanos departed after yielding six runs on 10 hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one while throwing 96 pitches.

The Dodgers stretched their lead to 10-0 with four runs in the sixth against Arizona reliever Luis Frias. Freeman doubled in a run and Turner followed with an RBI triple before scoring on Smith’s single. Bellinger capped the rally with a two-out RBI double.

Walker hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth against Evan Phillips. Fifteen of Walker’s 64 career homers have come against the Dodgers.

Taylor belted a two-run homer in the eighth against Caleb Smith, and Bellinger delivered a two-run single in the ninth against outfielder Jake Hager.

Infielder Hanser Alberto tossed a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

Hyun Jin Ryu gets better of Shohei Ohtani as Jays beat Angels

Home runs by George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Danny Jansen helped lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif.

Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu (2-0) outpitched Angels starter Shohei Ohtani in the first matchup between the two, Ryu giving up two runs and six hits in five innings. Ohtani (3-3) was not sharp, giving up the homers to Springer and Guerrero and five runs in six innings overall.

Ohtani struck out 10, including three in the third inning. But he also gave up three runs on three hits and one walk in the inning, which proved to be decisive.

The Blue Jays had only seven hits, including two each from Springer and Bo Bichette. Three Blue Jays relievers — David Phelps, Yimi Garcia and Adam Cimber — each threw a scoreless inning before the Angels pushed across a run in the ninth against Jordan Romano.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Springer, the leadoff hitter, worked the count full against Ohtani, then hit a 96 mph fastball over the fence in center for his ninth homer of the season.

The Blue Jays added to their lead in the third. They got an RBI single by Santiago Espinal and a two-run double from Bichette, giving them a 4-0 lead.

The Angels responded with two runs in their half of the third inning against Ryu. They started the inning with singles by Brandon Marsh and Andrew Velazquez, and they scored their first run on a single by Luis Rengifo.

The Angels had an opportunity to make it a big inning with Mike Trout and Ohtani due up, but Ryu got Trout to hit into a force play and got Ohtani to hit into an RBI fielder’s choice that made it 4-2.

Guerrero homered in the sixth and Jansen in the ninth for Toronto.

Red Sox put up 16 runs against White Sox again

Trevor Story hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to continue his tear, Alex Verdugo had four hits and three RBIs and the visiting Boston Red Sox recorded a 16-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Story hit an RBI single during Boston’s three-run first off Dallas Keuchel (2-5) and added a three-run homer in the second as the Red Sox opened a 6-0 lead.

Story hit his ninth homer this month. He has 32 RBIs in his past 21 games after driving in five runs in his first 18 games with the Red Sox, the team he joined as a free agent in March.

The Red Sox won for the seventh time in eight games as five players collected multi-hit games. Boston scored 16 runs for the second time in the series, which it won two games to one.

Verdugo posted his fourth career four-hit game, matching his career high. He had a pair of RBI doubles before adding an RBI single in Boston’s five-run eighth.

Enrique Hernandez hit his second leadoff homer of the series two pitches in; Christian Vazquez had a pair of RBI singles among his three hits. Christian Arroyo and Bobby Dalbec also contributed RBI singles as the Red Sox tied a season high with 19 hits and went 10-for-24 with runners in scoring position.

The Red Sox scored their final runs on a two-run homer by Kevin Plawecki off Chicago infielder Josh Harrison in the ninth.

Chicago’s Andrew Vaughn drove in a career-high five runs. He hit a two-run double and a three-run homer.

Keuchel allowed six runs on seven hits in two innings. It was the second straight time the left-hander gave up six runs; he did so in four innings on Saturday in a loss to the host New York Yankees.

Boston’s Michael Wacha allowed a season-high five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. John Schreiber (2-0) followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Josh Hader returns to seal Brewers’ win over Cardinals

Josh Hader returned from a family medical emergency to earn his 16th save in 16 tries as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers edged the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Thursday.

Hader, who had not allowed a run since last July 28, was away from the Brewers for the previous three games to be with his wife, Maria Macias, after she experienced pregnancy complications.

By claiming the opener of a four-game series, the National League Central-leading Brewers won for the sixth time in the past eight games. The Cardinals took their second loss in a row after a four-game winning streak.

Brewers starter Eric Lauer (5-1) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out one. Trevor Kelley, Trevor Gott and Brad Boxberger pitched an inning each to get the game to Hader, who worked around a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth.

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (5-4) allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits and a walk in five innings. He fanned two.

Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 for the Cardinals with a homer, a walk and two runs while extending his hitting streak to 17 games and his on-base streak to 31 games.

The Brewers jumped on Wainwright in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Luis Urias started the scoring with a one-out solo homer. Two-out singles by Andrew McCutchen, Rowdy Tellez and Tyrone Taylor produced the second run before Wainwright coaxed an inning-ending grounder from Omar Narvaez.

The Cardinals tied the game in their half of the inning. Tommy Edman hit a leadoff double, Goldschmidt walked, Albert Pujols hit an RBI single and Juan Yepez followed with a sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee regained the lead with an unearned run in the second inning. Jace Peterson hit a one-out double, Urias reached on a two-out error, and Christian Yelich hit an RBI single.

The Brewers expanded their lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning when Kolten Wong hit a one-out single, Yelich walked with two outs and McCutchen followed with an RBI single.

Goldschmidt cut the deficit to 4-3 with a seventh-inning homer off Gott.

The Cardinals got two runners on base in the ninth inning, but Hader got Pujols and Yepez to pop out to end the game.

Marlins reinstate IF Joey Wendle, P Richard Bleier from IL

The Miami Marlins bolstered their depth in the field and in the bullpen on Thursday when they reinstated infielder Joey Wendle and left-hander Richard Bleier from the injured list.

Wendle hit .304 with two homers, 10 RBIs and four stolen bases in his first 25 games this season before a hamstring strain sent him to the IL. He played 16 games at third base while also filling in at shortstop and second base.

He is in his first season in Miami after spending the previous four years with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Marlins acquired Wendle on Nov. 30 in exchange for minor-leaguer Kameron Misner.

Bleier is 0-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He has walked two and struck out six in 8 2/3 innings.

The Marlins optioned catcher Payton Henry and infielder Joe Dunand to Triple-A Jacksonville in corresponding roster moves.

Miami also returned infielder Erik Gonzalez to Jacksonville, added infielder Luke Williams to the 40-man roster and assigned him to Triple-A Jacksonville, and transferred right-hander Paul Campbell (elbow) to the 60-day injured list.

Williams was acquired earlier Thursday in a minor league deal that sent infielder Hayden Cantrelle to the San Francisco Giants.

Royals rally late vs. Twins to end six-game skid

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-out RBI double to cap a three-run eighth-inning rally as the Kansas City Royals snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday in Minneapolis.

Witt’s hit drove in Whit Merrifield, whose two-run double had tied the game. It was the 200th double of Merrifield’s career.

The Royals had just three baserunners through seven innings.

With no outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Twins loaded the bases against Joel Payamps, but Scott Barlow struck out two batters and got Max Kepler to ground out to first. The Twins then had runners on first and third in the ninth, but Barlow got Gio Urshela to ground out to end the game.

Josh Staumont (2-1) was the winning pitcher. Barlow pitched two innings for his fifth save of the season.

Tyler Duffey (2-3) was the losing pitcher.

Twins starter Devin Smeltzer allowed no runs on two hits in a career-high seven innings. He walked one and struck out six.

However, the Royals’ rally in the eighth kept Smeltzer from winning his second game against Kansas City in the past six days.

Royals starter Daniel Lynch allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Minnesota’s Byron Buxton finally snapped his long hitless streak, getting an infield hit in the ninth — his first hit in 31 at-bats.

The Twins got on the board in the second on an RBI single by Ryan Jeffers. Urshela led off the inning with a walk. Luis Arraez hit into a fielder’s choice and went to second on an infield single by Jose Miranda before scoring on Jeffers’ knock to left.

Gilberto Celestino singled in the fourth, driving in Miranda, who had doubled with one out.

Smeltzer continued to baffle the Royals. He gave up a single to Benintendi in the first and walked Benintendi in the fourth. He gave up a hit to Hunter Dozier in the seventh.

Aaron Nola gets rare win, pitching Phillies past Braves

Aaron Nola pitched 8 1/3 innings and won his first game since Opening Day to help the visiting Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Thursday and earn a split of the four-game series.

Nola was lifted after allowing a one-out double to Matt Olson in the ninth inning. He was relieved by Corey Knebel, who got the final two outs but allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

Nola (2-4) allowed one run on five hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters to end a four-game losing streak. It was his 23rd career game with double-digit strikeouts and gave him the National League lead with 74. It was Nola’s first win in Atlanta since 2019.

The losing pitcher was Kyle Wright (4-3), who pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts.

The Phillies got a run in the third inning on a leadoff homer from J.T. Realmuto, his third homer of the season. Philadelphia loaded the bases but failed to score when Wright struck out Alec Bohm and got Bryce Harper to hit into a double play.

Philadelphia scored two more runs in the seventh, with a two-out rally. Kyle Schwarber walked and Realmuto was hit by a pitch, a play that was upheld on video review. Odubel Herrera then greeted reliever Will Smith by lining his first pitch into the right-field corner for a two-run double. Herrera is now 6-for-9 in his career against Smith.

The Phillies added an insurance run in the eighth when Nick Castellanos doubled home Harper. Center fielder Guillermo Heredia almost made a highlight-reel catch, but the ball seemed to bounce out of his glove after he banged into the fence.

The Braves played without left fielder Marcell Ozuna, who was a late scratch with a lower abdominal strain, and right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who missed his second game with a right groin strain.

Miguel Cabrera’s walk-off single lifts Tigers over Guardians

Miguel Cabrera had three hits and drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Detroit Tigers edged the visiting Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Thursday.

Cabrera knocked in Jonathan Schoop, who smacked a one-out double off Trevor Stephan (2-2) and moved to third on a wild pitch prior to Cabrera’s walk-off hit.

Robbie Grossman had two hits and scored two runs for Detroit in the opener of a four-game series. Gregory Soto (2-2) was the winning pitcher, tossing an inning of scoreless relief, as the Tigers earned their second consecutive victory.

Detroit starter Tarik Skubal allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Owen Miller drove in two runs for the Guardians and Oscar Gonzalez had two hits in his major league debut. Konnor Pilkington, making his second major league start, gave up three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Eli Morgan didn’t allow a hit in three innings of scoreless relief.

The Tigers scored a run in the first when Grossman singled, moved up on a Cabrera walk and scored on Javier Baez’s single to right. Detroit left the bases loaded as Daz Cameron fouled out.

Detroit made it 3-0 in the second. The Tigers placed runners in scoring position with one out when Derek Hill singled and Grossman doubled. Schoop knocked in Hill with a sacrifice fly, and Cabrera drove in Grossman with a single.

Cleveland tied it up in the next inning. Oscar Mercado led off with a single and scored on Luke Maile’s double. Maile was erased on a fielder’s choice, but the Indians had two runners in scoring position with two outs with the aid of an error and a walk. Miller’s single to left-center knocked in Myles Straw and Amed Rosario.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Enyel De Los Santos entered in relief and struck out Baez, then induced a Jeimer Candelario popout.

Gonzalez hit a one-out double in the ninth, but Soto struck out Ernie Clement and got Mercado to fly out.

Carlos Rodon, Giants seek success in series opener vs. Reds

The San Francisco Giants have had a rougher time in 2022 than during their 107-win season of a year ago. But the defending National League West champions are still hopeful of rediscovering their dominating ways as they visit the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night in the opener of a three-game weekend series.

The Giants have won their last two after ending a five-game losing streak with a dramatic 13-12 win on Tuesday over the New York Mets. San Francisco’s visit to Cincinnati opens a 10-game road trip that will continue with three games in Philadelphia and four in Miami.

Joc Pederson was the hero Tuesday with three home runs while Evan Longoria homered in the first two innings Wednesday as the Giants won the series. Pederson and Mike Yastrzemski also homered as the Giants showed the form of their record-setting 2021 season.

“One of the reasons we were successful last year is because our veteran players had signature and sort of career years,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “(Longoria) was excellent when he was on the field for us. In order for us to get where we want to go, it’s going to have to be (Brandon) Crawford and (Brandon) Belt and Longo and Joc and some of these veteran players carrying us.”

The Reds managed to split their four-game series with the Cubs on Thursday and will continue their seven-game homestand with the series against the Giants.

The Giants send left-hander Carlos Rodon (4-3, 3.43) to the mound in the series opener. After winning his first three decisions of the season, Rodon has struggled in the month of May. He is 1-3 with a 5.82 ERA in his last four starts.

But those numbers are skewed by his start on May 15 at St. Louis, in which he was tagged for eight runs and 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of a 15-6 loss to the Cardinals. He delivered quality starts of six innings and just two runs allowed in each of his three other outings this month, but still took the loss in two of the three.

He rebounded well in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits in a 2-1 home loss to San Diego.

The Reds could be the perfect remedy for Rodon, as he is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his two previous career starts, allowing just two runs and five hits in 11 innings.

The Reds, coming off their first 20-run game since Sept. 4, 1999, have not announced a starting pitcher for their first two games of the Giants series.

Cincinnati’s top position prospect, Jose Barrero, has been taken off the 60-day injury list as the team monitors a return to the majors they hope will take place in early June. The shortstop, who had left wrist surgery, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on May 20. He has slashed .294/.333/.529 with a double and a home run over his first five games.

“He’s going to stay there to play. More to just to try to recreate a spring training for him,” Reds manager David Bell said Thursday. “He could come back and play at any point, but we’re not going to rush that if we can help it.

“He is not on the 60-day IL, so he can come back and play. The plan is to let him play, get his at-bats, get his timing and all that.”

Nationals ride four-run first inning to win over Rockies

Cesar Hernandez and Dee Strange-Gordon had two hits each, Patrick Corbin earned his first win of the season, and the host Washington Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 7-3 on Thursday night.

Yonathan Daza and Elias Diaz had two hits each and German Marquez pitched six innings for Colorado. The Rockies have dropped three of four to start their seven-game road trip.

The Nationals jumped in front with a big first inning. Hernandez led off with a walk, Keibert Ruiz singled and, after Juan Soto lined out, Nelson Cruz singled to drive in Hernandez.

Josh Bell followed with a double to bring in Ruiz, and Yadiel Hernandez doubled to make it 4-0.

Colorado got one back in the second inning. Brendan Rodgers led off with a double, moved to third on a one-out wild pitch and scored on a single by Jose Iglesias.

The Rockies struck again in the third inning. With one out, Daza walked and scored on a triple by Charlie Blackmon. C.J. Cron grounded out to first to bring home Blackmon, making it 4-3.

Washington stretched its lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Hernandez doubled to drive in Victor Robles, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.

It stayed a two-run game until the seventh when Ty Blach relieved Marquez. Hernandez singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Blach walked the next two batters to load the bases.

Bell hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Hernandez and make it 6-3.

Marquez (1-5) allowed five runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Corbin (1-7) struck out the leadoff batter in the seventh but left after giving up a single to Diaz. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three in 6 1/3 innings.

The Nationals added an insurance run in the eighth inning off Jhoulys Chacin. Strange-Gordon tripled to center field with one out and scored on a bunt single to first base by Robles.
