Reds’ Tommy Pham, Giants’ Joc Pederson separated after altercation

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Tommy Pham and San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pederson had to be separated prior to Friday night’s scheduled game between the two clubs in Cincinnati.

According to a report in The Athletic, multiple sources indicated that Pham slapped Pederson across the face in a dispute that stemmed from a fantasy football league that includes players from multiple teams.

Reds and Giants players, coaches and staff members all helped diffuse the situation.

Eyewitness accounts pegged Pham as the instigators, but Pham told reporters afterward that Pederson started the incident.

Pham was later scratched from the Reds’ starting lineup, after the Giants requested that he should not play pending the conclusion of an Major League Baseball investigation that already was underway.

Pederson declined comment shortly after the confrontation, saying he had to go take batting practice.

“We’re investigating it and learning as much as we can about the incident,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “I sense we’ll have a clearer understanding after the game.

“We’re taking it very seriously. Until we have a clear understanding of what happened, not willing to discuss it.”

The San Jose Mercury News reported that approximately 20 people associated with the Reds and 10 with the Giants were in the outfield while the two players were separated.

The start of the game was delayed due to rain.

Pham, 34, is in his first season with the Reds and was batting .233 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 42 games through Thursday. He also has played with the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres during a nine-year major league career.

Pederson, 30, was batting .260 with 11 homers and 24 RBIs in 35 games ahead of Friday in his first season with the Giants. He also has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves during his nine seasons.

Storm dominate OT to defeat struggling Liberty

Breanna Stewart had 31 points and nine rebounds as the short-handed Seattle Storm held off the visiting New York Liberty 79-71 in overtime Friday night.

Jewell Loyd added 21 points and Briann January had 11 for the Storm (4-3), who won their third straight game despite playing without Sue Bird, Ezi Magbegor and Stephanie Talbot. They entered the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocol.

Natasha Howard had 19 points and nine rebounds, Han Xu scored 12 and Stefanie Dotson and Rebecca Allen scored 11 each for the Liberty (1-6), who lost their sixth straight and will visit Seattle again Sunday.

The Storm didn’t make a field goal in the final 6:22 of the fourth quarter, but Stewart made their first attempt in overtime, a tie-breaking 3-pointer.

January added another 3-pointer and Stewart made two free throws for a 75-69 lead with 1:55 left.

Allen made two free throws, but New York didn’t score again.

Loyd had five points as the Storm scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 59-51 lead.

The Liberty went scoreless for nearly the first four minutes before Howard made a jumper to end the drought and start a 9-0 run that gave New York a 60-59 lead.

Stewart made one of two free throws to end a 4 1/2-minute scoring drought for Seattle and tie the score.

The score was tied again before Loyd made two free throws to give the Storm a 64-62 lead with 36 seconds left.

Allen made a 3-pointer and a layup to tie the score with 4.8 seconds left.

Seattle had a chance to regain the lead, but Gabby Williams missed two free throws with 2.3 seconds left, leading to overtime.

The Liberty missed their first 12 3-pointers before Sabrina Ionescu made one to get them within nine points early in the third quarter.

They made six more 3-pointers to get within 52-51 at the end of the period.

Fever fend off Sparks to win interim coach’s first game

Kelsey Mitchell’s 22 points led five players in double figures Friday night as the Indiana Fever presented Carlos Knox with a win in his first game as the team’s interim coach, a 101-96 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Indianapolis.

Rookie NaLyssa Smith and Victoria Vivians added 17 points apiece for Indiana (3-7), which snapped a five-game losing streak in its highest-scoring game of the year. Emily Engstler came off the bench to score 13 points and grab nine rebounds, and Danielle Robinson chipped in 10 points and 11 assists.

Nneka Oguwmike poured in a game-high 30 points and hauled in 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to keep Los Angeles (3-6) from losing for the sixth time in seven games. Katie Lou Samuelson scored a career-high 19 points.

The Sparks also got 13 points and nine rebounds from Liz Cambage, but she made just 2 of 11 field goals against a defense that doubled her from multiple angles. Cambage fouled out in the final minute.

Los Angeles trailed by 18 at one point in the third quarter, but pulled within 95-93 with 1:22 left on a pullup jumper by Brittney Sykes. However, the Fever were able to close the game out with 6-of-8 foul shooting in the final minute and a pair of key defensive stops.

Indiana players surrounded Knox after time expired, celebrating the outcome. Knox, in his second stint with the franchise, was picked to succeed Marianne Stanley after she was fired on Wednesday with the team struggling to find its footing.

The Fever controlled tempo for most of the game, using quickness to get good shots and hounding the Sparks into key mistakes. They took a 26-22 first quarter lead on Destanni Henderson’s driving layup with 1.7 seconds remaining, then expanded the margin to 13 at one stage of the second quarter.

The lead reached 70-52 at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter when Mitchell stroked a 3-pointer, but Los Angeles rallied down the stretch.

Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer picks Illinois

Matthew Mayer, who won an NCAA championship during his four seasons at Baylor, is transferring to Illinois.

The 6-foot-9 wing announced his new destination Friday on Instagram, writing below a picture of him in a Fighting Illini uniform, “New fit, what y’all think? #committed @illinimbb”

Mayer appeared in 126 games for Baylor, all of them as a reserve until he started 33 games last season. He averaged 9.8 points and five rebounds in 2021-22 as the Bears went 27-7 and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to North Carolina.

The previous season, Mayer contributed 8.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest as the Bears captured the national championship.

He becomes the second player to transfer from Baylor to Illinois in the past year, joining forward Dain Dainja. After playing three games for the Bears last season, Dainja announced his move.

In addition, swingman Terrence Shannon Jr. announced last month that he is transferring from Texas Tech to Illinois.

Jimmy Butler scores 47 vs. Celtics, forcing Game 7 in Miami

A struggling Jimmy Butler strung together three poor outings at a very bad time but made up for his struggles in a big way on Friday night.

The ultracompetitive forward shook off all the misfired shots and the aches in his right knee while singlehandedly carrying the Miami Heat to a 111-103 victory over the host Boston Celtics on Friday night to tie the Eastern Conference finals at three games apiece.

Butler set a personal playoff high with 47 points and also contributed nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals in a stellar all-around performance.

“My teammates and my coaches let me know to be aggressive and go out there and be the best player on the floor,” Butler said. “I just have to remember that every time I take the floor.”

Butler had scored a total of 27 points over the previous three games before erupting during a must-win situation in Game 6.

He made 16 of 29 field-goal attempts — including 4 of 8 from 3-point range — and sank all 11 free-throw attempts while reaching the 40-point mark for the second time in this series and the fourth time this postseason.

The inflammation in Butler’s right knee caused him to miss the second half of Game 3. Shooting 10 of 40 from the field in a three-game span hurt just as much.

“I let my team down a couple of games,” Butler said. “I wasn’t going to do it again. We know what we’re capable of.”

Butler’s knee is feeling better now and his mental game got a boost when former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade — a teammate of Butler on the Chicago Bulls during the 2016-17 season — sent him a text message prior to Friday’s game and told him to “go out there and continue to build your legacy.”

Miami’s Kyle Lowry recorded 18 points and 10 assists before fouling out for the Heat. Max Strus scored 13 points, and P.J. Tucker added 11.

Jayson Tatum registered 30 points and nine rebounds, Derrick White scored 22 points and Jaylen Brown added 20 for Boston. Marcus Smart had 14 points while Robert Williams III tallied 12 for the Celtics.

Game 7 is Sunday night in Miami.

There were a lot of prognosticators saying there would be no Game 7 after the Heat averaged just 81 points in back-to-back setbacks the past two contests.

Miami center Bam Adebayo shook his head at the rhetoric.

“Everybody thought the series was already over,” Adebayo said. “That was the only motivation we needed.”

It was a disappointing night for Boston, which has failed to reach the NBA Finals in its past four trips to the Eastern Conference finals.

Now the Celtics need to go on the road and win to reach the Finals for the first time since 2010.

“Our backs are on the wall,” Brown said. “Game 7, loser goes home. So we have to find a way to win.”

Butler converted a tiebreaking three-point play to give Miami a 102-99 lead with 2:06 remaining. Tucker made three of four free throws during a 20-second span to make it a six-point margin with 1:25 left.

Butler’s jumper with 43.9 seconds left provided another six-point lead, and the Heat closed it out.

“They made timely threes late in the shot clock,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. “We didn’t contest and get out on shooters as well as we should have. We had our chances. Butler was aggressive, and we didn’t match his intensity.”

Miami guard Tyler Herro (groin) missed his third straight game. Herro won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award this season.

The Heat shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 15 of 35 from 3-point range. Miami was 24 of 25 from the free-throw line.

Boston hit 44.4 percent of its shots and was 11 of 33 from behind the arc. The Celtics were 28 of 31 from the line.

Butler had 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists as Miami led 48-46 at halftime. Tatum and Brown scored 18 first-half points apiece for the Celtics.

Co-leader Scottie Scheffler stays bogey-free at Charles Schwab

0

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler fired a 5-under-par 65 Friday to share the second-round lead with Scott Stallings and Beau Hossler at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

Stallings shot a 64, tied for the low round of the day, and Hossler also signed for a 65 to move into the lead pack. Scheffler was one of eight co-leaders after the first day of the tournament at Colonial Country Club.

Patrick Reed is alone in fourth at 8 under after his second straight round of 66. Pat Perez (66) and Chris Kirk (67) are tied for fifth at 7 under.

Scheffler is the only player in the field to remain bogey-free through 36 holes.

“I love that stat. It’s a lot of fun,” Scheffler said. “I kept the stress off myself for the most part. My lag putting was really good, and really the only long par putt I made was on No. 7, and outside of that, I really didn’t put much stress on myself, which is good.”

The Masters champ, who grew up in the Dallas area, made two of his five birdies on his first two holes and drained a nearly 25-foot, right-to-left putt for birdie at the par-4 12th.

Stallings posted six birdies and no bogeys to shoot his 64. Four of those birdies came on the back nine, including one on a 29-foot putt at No. 18.

“My caddie has done an unbelievable job of reading the greens all week and I rely on him a lot,” Stallings said. “He said, ‘Man, it’s going to break late,’ and I spit it out there and hopefully he was right and it went right in the middle.”

Hossler, who holed out for two eagles during Thursday’s round, had a simpler round Friday of five birdies and no bogeys. Hossler last held at least a share of the 36-hole lead at a PGA Tour event in 2018.

“I hadn’t holed out in shoot, I don’t know how long, but to have two within an hour was pretty unique,” Hossler said. “Certainly yesterday was more of an up-and-down round. Today felt frankly — never really stress-free, but as stress-free as it’s going to get.”

Norway’s Viktor Hovland (65), Australia’s Cam Davis (68), Harold Varner III (68), Max McGreevy (66) and Davis Riley (67) were tied for seventh at 6 under.

Local favorite Jordan Spieth took advantage of the scoring conditions and shot a 66 to get to 5 under for the week. Chile’s Mito Pereira — who lost the lead at last week’s PGA Championship with a double bogey on his final hole — had a 66 to get to 4 under.

Other notable players to make the cut of 1 over were Webb Sipson (5 under), former world No. 1 Luke Donald of England (2 under), Tony Finau (1 under), Rickie Fowler (1 under), defending champion Jason Kokrak (even) and Collin Morikawa (1 over).

But Justin Thomas, coming off his second PGA Championship victory on Sunday, and Will Zalatoris, whom Thomas beat in a playoff there, both missed the cut at 3 over.

Surging Real Salt Lake chasing more vs. Dynamo

0

Real Salt Lake will aim for their third consecutive victory on Saturday night when they host the Houston Dynamo, who are playing their third game in seven days.

Real Salt Lake had nearly a week to prepare for Houston after a 2-1 upset victory at CF Montreal on Sunday.

After conceding in the opening minute, RSL (6-3-4, 22 points) got even on Justen Glad’s corner-kick header early in the second half and took the lead on Sergio Cordova’s low finish in the 66th minute.

That score would hold, lifting RSL to fourth in the Western Conference standings entering the weekend.

“We went in at halftime and the halftime speech was just ‘Keep doing what we’re doing. Keep playing,'” Glad said. “We’re going to get our chances. If we stay solid in the back, we’re going to have a good shot at this game. I’m incredibly proud of the group. We showed a lot of fight out there and it’s a huge three points.”

Salt Lake remains without last year’s leading scorer Damir Kreilach (back). Recently re-signed winger Anderson Julio (hamstring) is questionable.

But Jefferson Savarino could make his competitive return. He was signed from reigning Brazilian league champions Atletico Mineiro earlier this month and scored 21 goals in a previous three-season stint at RSL from 2017-19.

Houston (5-5-3, 18 points) could use reinforcements of their own for the finale of a three-game, seven-day road trip that might be their most grueling stretch.

It began brilliantly with a 3-0 victory Sunday at the Los Angeles Galaxy. But then Paulo Nagamura rotated his squad heavily in the U.S. Open Cup and the club ultimately fell 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday in their Round of 16 clash.

“There are a lot of things that we can take as a positive,” Nagamura said. “As of now, it’s about assessing the players, making sure they are recovering. (There’s) not much we can do with so many games in a short period.”

Sebastian Ferreira scored his fifth goal of the league campaign against the Galaxy, tied with Darwin Quintero for most on the team. He was left out of the squad at Kansas City.

Houston is mostly healthy, although defender Zarek Valentin is in health and safety protocol.

Reports: Lakers decide on Darvin Ham as next head coach

The Los Angeles Lakers filled their head coaching vacancy Friday, signing former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham to a four-year deal, multiple outlets reported.

Ham, 48, does not have any head coaching experience but has been an NBA assistant coach the past 11 seasons, including two seasons (2011-13) with the Lakers. He has been with the Bucks since 2018.

Ham now takes over a storied franchise that has won 17 NBA titles, 19 conference titles and 33 division titles.

The Lakers fired Frank Vogel on April 11 after he spent three seasons with the team, guiding them to the NBA title in 2020. Vogel finished 127-98 over his three seasons in Los Angeles, but the team went 33-49 this past season and missed the playoffs for the seventh time in nine seasons.

Ham takes over a talented roster that includes LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but the duo was slowed by multiple injuries for each last season. James played in 56 of the Lakers’ 82 games, while Davis played in 40.

The Lakers do not have a pick in next month’s NBA Draft. They moved their first-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans in the deal to land Davis, while their second-round pick currently belongs to the San Antonio Spurs.

Ham played eight seasons in the NBA, making his debut with the Denver Nuggets in the 1996-97 season after he went undrafted out of Texas Tech. He averaged 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in 417 career games (45 starts) for the Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards, Bucks, Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons.

Ham’s best season came in the 1999-2000 with the Bucks when he averaged 5.1 points with 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 35 games (21 starts).
