ATP Marin Cilic defeats Andrey Rublev to reach French Open semis

Marin Cilic unleashed 33 aces and dominated the fifth-set tiebreak while registering an upset of seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev on Wednesday to reach the semifinals of the French Open at Paris.

The 20th-seeded Cilic prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10-2) in the quarterfinal match to become just the fifth active player to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slam events. The others are Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

The 33-year-old Cilic will face the winner of Wednesday night’s quarterfinal between eighth-seeded Casper Ruud and Holger Rune.

Cilic racked up 88 winners and overcame 71 unforced errors. The Croatian saved six of eight break points and stepped up his level of play during the tiebreak.

“It comes from being me,” Cilic said of being tenacious at the end of a match that lasted four hours, 14 minutes. “I played that kind of tennis the whole match, and especially the fifth set was an incredible battle. Andrey played incredibly well, and it was an incredible fair-play performance on the court.

“A lot of heart, and one had to go down. Today was my day, but Andrey also played an incredible match.”

Cilic’s victory comes two days after he ousted second-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev in three sets at Roland Garros.

Rublev, also from Russia, had 15 aces among 35 winners and also committed 31 unforced errors.

Cilic won the U.S. Open in 2014 and reached the finals at Wimbledon (2017) and the Australian Open (2018) before losing. His highest ranking of No. 3 came early in 2018.

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger receives extension through 2026-27

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger received a raise and a contract extension Wednesday as a reward for a stellar first season as coach of the Cyclones.

Otzelberger took over a 2-22 squad and guided Iowa State to a 22-13 record and a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 berth last season.

His contract now runs through the 2026-27 season, while his annual total compensation will raise from $1.5 million to $2 million. His guaranteed compensation also rose $500,000 to $1.2 million.

“T.J. Otzelberger and his staff orchestrated arguably the greatest turnaround in college basketball history this past year, inheriting a two-win program and leading it to 22 victories and the Sweet 16 in their first season, and I’m grateful that we are able to reward that success with this extension,” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement.

“I believe T.J. is building a championship culture within our program that fosters academic excellence, on-court success and accountability, and I believe that the momentum our program enjoys will lead to future success under his direction.”

The Cyclones were a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament before they defeated LSU and Wisconsin ahead of losing to Miami with an Elite Eight berth on the line.

Otzelberger, 44, has a 121-76 record in six seasons as a head coach. He made two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons at South Dakota State (2016-19) and spent two seasons at UNLV (2019-21) before being hired by the Cyclones.

Medtronic Review Post Q4 Earnings Results

0

RBC Capital analysts provided a review of Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT) following the company’s reported Q4 results last week and their meeting with management to get greater clarification on the Q1 outlook, 2023 sales ramp, and color on supply chain disruptions that the company is experiencing.
The company guided to Q1/23 organic sales decline of 4.5-5.5%. The questions the analysts have been fielding from investors are around what the company’s underlying growth looks like and what impact of supply disruptions is included in its guidance.
As per their conversation with the company, the analysts note that on a comp-adjusted basis, the company is looking for an organic sales decline of 0.15% in Q1/23 vs. growth of 0.25% in Q4/22, reflecting typical seasonality.
The balance reflects supply headwinds, which management assumes will worsen from Q4 to Q1. The analysts noted that the year-over-year growth looks more challenging as it laps comps of 19.0% underlying growth in the prior year’s quarter.

Campbell Soup Company Q3 Preview

0

Deutsche Bank analysts provided their outlook on Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) ahead of upcoming Q3/22 earnings, expected to be reported on June 8.
Although nominal dollar-based consumption remains solid, the analysts mentioned that the company’s market share performance continues to be affected by supply chain constraints and early signs of consumer trade down in categories like soup and crackers.
Furthermore, the analysts noted that consistent with the broader CPG space, the path toward margin recovery is still unclear. Consequently, while the analysts continue to expect more reinvestment than consensus, they acknowledge that the company will likely have less flexibility to spend on incremental A&P, which could hamper EPS and/or adversely affect top-line momentum and brand equity moving forward.

Warriors list Gary Payton II, two others as questionable for Game 1

Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II is questionable along with two teammates and his status for Game 1 is likely to be determined just before the NBA Finals tipoff with the Boston Celtics on Thursday in San Francisco.

Payton, 29, has been out since the conference semifinals, when he injured his left elbow against the Memphis Grizzlies.

He participated in Wednesday’s scrimmage and was able to absorb contact while extending his shooting range, head coach Steve Kerr said.

“We’ll see how they turn up (Thursday), but it was a good sign all three were able to have,” Kerr said.

Otto Porter Jr. (foot) and Andre Iguodala (back) are questionable but likewise took part in Wednesday’s scrimmage, the second straight day all three injured players have participated.

Porter was the Warriors’ sixth-leading scorer and third-best rebounder this season, averaging 8.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. A former Finals MVP, Iguodala is the oldest Warrior on the team at 38 years old.

Second-year center James Wiseman is the only player on the Warriors’ roster unavailable to play in Game 1.

Wiseman has been dealing with a meniscus injury since April 2021.

Ambarella Reports Q1 Beat, Provides Guidance

0

Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMBA) reported its Q1 results, with EPS of $0.44 coming in better than the Street estimate of $0.36. Revenue was $90.3 million, compared to the Street estimate of $90.08 million.
In addition to the 14nm wafer shortage highlighted a quarter ago (Samsung), the company further lowered its Q2 guidance citing China covid lockdown-related supply/logistics disruptions. The company expects Q2 revenue in the range of $78-82 million, compared to the consensus estimate of $91.5 million.
Looking beyond Q2, and taking a more optimistic tone, the company expects supply to rebound in H2/22 as China lockdowns are removed and 14nm supply rebounds.
While the analysts at Deutsche Bank agree that Q2 is likely to mark the near-term revenue trough and remain impressed with the company’s CV-led technology leadership/growth, the combination of ongoing macro/sector-specific uncertainties and the company’s already premium valuation lead them to reiterate their hold rating.

Report: Jazz, Quin Snyder talks could end his tenure

Quin Snyder could walk away from the Utah Jazz if contract negotiations aren’t soon fruitful, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

Snyder remains engaged in negotiations with owner Ryan Smith and CEO of basketball operations Danny Ainge, but the report states the attempt to extend his current contract and secure Snyder for next season and beyond have not been fruitful.

The change in ownership and installing Ainge as the top decision-maker in the basketball operation has shifted thinking within the franchise in some ways, but there is no rift between Snyder and the new brass, per reports.

General manager Justin Zanik said in April that Snyder is regarded as one of the best coaches in the NBA.

“There is no other partner I would rather have as a coach and as a leader of our players and as a partner in our front office than Quin Snyder,” he said.

To date, there has been no threat to walk away or end talks by either side, per the report.

Snyder and Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr have eight seasons with their current NBA employer, and Utah has a six-year postseason streak.

Only Gregg Popovich (San Antonio Spurs) and Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat) have been employed by their current team as head coach longer than Snyder.

HP Shares Up 4% Following Q2 Beat, Provides Strong Outlook

0

HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) shares were trading around 4% higher Wednesday afternoon following the company’s reported Q2 results, with revenue of $16.5 billion coming in better than the Street estimate of $16.17 billion. EPS was $1.08, compared to the Street estimate of $1.05.
On the demand side, continued strength in Commercial was encouraging, offsetting the softness in Consumer. On the supply side, incremental supply chain challenges in PS are driving some revenue pushout from Q3 to Q4, but the company seems to have the “line of sight” that the supply chain will improve in Q4.
Despite a shift in revenue toward F4Q, the company reiterated its full 2022-year free cash flow target of over $4.5 billion, which takes into consideration the recovery in the PS supply chain and the reduction in inventory.
For Q1/22, the company expects EPS in the range of $1.03-$1.08, compared to the Street estimate of $1.02. For the full 2022-year, the EPS is expected to range from $4.24 to $4.38, compared to the Street estimate of $4.25.

Brown-Forman Corporation Q4 Earnings Preview

0

Deutsche Bank analysts released their outlook on Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BF-B) ahead of the upcoming Q4 earnings, expected to be reported on June 8.
Overall, the analysts are biased higher on revenues versus the consensus estimates heading into Q4 results, albeit lower on margins/EPS–noting cost inflation pressure, lingering translational/transactional FX headwinds, and elective investments in A&P/other capabilities. While the analysts see the company benefitting from still-solid/strong consumer demand across most markets, the company’s ongoing supply-side challenges with glass sourcing may have partially held back growth in the quarter. Moreover, the analysts noted that stronger Q4 depletions may delay the company’s efforts to replenish distributor/retailer inventory.

Ohio sports betting to go live Jan. 1, 2023

0

The state of Ohio will be the latest to have access to sports wagering when the program goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

Sports wagering was approved by Ohio lawmakers in December, with a buffer of just over a year created to establish rules and regulations for the industry, as well as accept applications to provide sports wagering.

Casinos, racetracks and sports teams all were welcome to apply for a license, while also being able to contract with at least two mobile betting vendors.

The launch timetable will be too late for the upcoming NFL and college football regular seasons but will allow for wagering during the NFL playoffs and select bowl games, including the college football national championship game on Jan. 9.

Ohio has eight professional sports teams, as well as a NASCAR race and a PGA Tour event. All of those entities were expected to apply for a sports wagering license, as were the state’s four casinos and 11 racetrack/casino properties.

Ohio is the 33rd state that has passed legislation allowing domestic sports wagering, with Washington, D.C., also launching wagering options.
