MLS Surging Real Salt Lake chasing more vs. Dynamo

0

Real Salt Lake will aim for their third consecutive victory on Saturday night when they host the Houston Dynamo, who are playing their third game in seven days.

Real Salt Lake had nearly a week to prepare for Houston after a 2-1 upset victory at CF Montreal on Sunday.

After conceding in the opening minute, RSL (6-3-4, 22 points) got even on Justen Glad’s corner-kick header early in the second half and took the lead on Sergio Cordova’s low finish in the 66th minute.

That score would hold, lifting RSL to fourth in the Western Conference standings entering the weekend.

“We went in at halftime and the halftime speech was just ‘Keep doing what we’re doing. Keep playing,'” Glad said. “We’re going to get our chances. If we stay solid in the back, we’re going to have a good shot at this game. I’m incredibly proud of the group. We showed a lot of fight out there and it’s a huge three points.”

Salt Lake remains without last year’s leading scorer Damir Kreilach (back). Recently re-signed winger Anderson Julio (hamstring) is questionable.

But Jefferson Savarino could make his competitive return. He was signed from reigning Brazilian league champions Atletico Mineiro earlier this month and scored 21 goals in a previous three-season stint at RSL from 2017-19.

Houston (5-5-3, 18 points) could use reinforcements of their own for the finale of a three-game, seven-day road trip that might be their most grueling stretch.

It began brilliantly with a 3-0 victory Sunday at the Los Angeles Galaxy. But then Paulo Nagamura rotated his squad heavily in the U.S. Open Cup and the club ultimately fell 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday in their Round of 16 clash.

“There are a lot of things that we can take as a positive,” Nagamura said. “As of now, it’s about assessing the players, making sure they are recovering. (There’s) not much we can do with so many games in a short period.”

Sebastian Ferreira scored his fifth goal of the league campaign against the Galaxy, tied with Darwin Quintero for most on the team. He was left out of the squad at Kansas City.

Houston is mostly healthy, although defender Zarek Valentin is in health and safety protocol.

MLB Pete Alonso’s memorable month continues as Mets nip Phillies

Pete Alonso continued his red-hot May by homering and finishing with four RBIs Friday night for the host New York Mets, who held off a comeback bid by the Philadelphia Phillies to earn an 8-6 win in the opener of a three-game series.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Mets, who have yet to drop three in a row. The Phillies have lost eight of 12.

Alonso opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first before hitting a two-run homer in the third and delivering an RBI double in the fourth to extend the Mets’ lead to 7-0.

The first baseman has 45 RBIs this season, the most ever in franchise history before Memorial Day.

Eduardo Escobar also had a sacrifice fly in the first off Bailey Falter (0-2), while Mark Canha had an RBI single in the opening frame. Francisco Lindor hit an RBI single in the fourth and Starling Marte added a run-scoring groundout in the sixth.

Carlos Carrasco (5-1) carried a two-hit shutout into the sixth before the Phillies scored six times in the frame. Carrasco was charged with five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos hit back-to-back RBI singles and Jean Segura had a run-scoring groundout before Carrasco exited following a walk to Odubel Herrera. Garrett Stubbs greeted Chasen Shreve with a three-run homer to pull the Phillies within 7-6, but Shreve got Bryson Stott to ground out to first before Drew Smith tossed a hitless seventh.

Seth Lugo inherited a two-on, two-out jam from Joely Rodriguez in the eighth, but he got pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto to pop out to first. Edwin Diaz allowed a hit but struck out three in the ninth to earn his 11th save.

Falter, making a spot start as the Phillies temporarily go to a six-man rotation, allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings.

OVERWATCH Shock avoid upset loss with huge rally at Kickoff Clash

0

The San Francisco Shock, the top seed at the Overwatch League’s Kickoff Clash after an unbeaten qualifying run, avoided a potential upset with a furious comeback victory their West quarterfinal match on Thursday in Arlington, Texas.

The Shock, who went 6-0 in qualifying, rallied from two maps down to stun the Washington Justice 3-2. With the loss, the eighth-seeded Justice drop into the losers bracket.

In other quarterfinal action, the Dallas Fuel swept the Toronto Defiant 3-0 and the Los Angeles Gladiators took down the Houston Outlaws 3-0. The Atlanta Reign defeated the Florida Mayhem 3-1.

Following last week’s qualifying, the top three West seeds got to choose which opponents they would face in the tournament’s first round this week. San Francisco chose eighth-place Washington in a move that nearly backfired. Dallas chose to face sixth-place Toronto and Los Angeles chose to tangle with fifth-place Houston, leaving No. 4 seed Florida with seventh-place Atlanta.

The Justice jumped out to an early and surprising lead by winning 2-1 on Ilios and 3-2 on Eichenwalde. But the Shock stormed back, winning successive maps on Dorado (3-0), New Queen Street (1-0) and Lijiang Tower (2-1).

The Fuel handed the Defiant 2-1 on Lijiang Tower, 3-1 on Midtown and 2-1 on Dorado.

The Gladiators won Lijiang Tower 2-0, Eichenwalde 4-3 and Circuit Royal 1-0 to beat the Outlaws easily.

The Reign dropped their opening map to the Mayhem 3-1 on Ilios before taking control. It took three tight map victories for Atlanta to advance in the winners’ bracket — with wins on King’s Row (4-3), Watchpoint: Gibraltar (3-2) and New Queen Street (1-0).

Kickoff Clash play continues Friday in Arlington for the West teams with four matches:
Atlanta Reign vs. San Francisco Shock (semifinals, winners bracket)
Los Angeles Gladiators vs. Dallas Fuel (semifinals, winners bracket)
Washington Justice vs. Florida Mayhem (round 1, losers bracket)
Toronto Defiant vs. Houston Outlaws (round 1, losers bracket)

MLS Sporting KC, Whitecaps look to emerge from Western cellar

0

A short-handed Sporting Kansas City club will host the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday night in a meeting of the two clubs at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Sporting KC (3-7-4, 13 points) has started to gain some momentum, going 3-1-4 over their last eight matches in all competitions. Two of those wins have come in U.S. Open Cup play, but for Sporting manager Peter Vermes, all competitions are important and he doesn’t make much of a distinction.

The outlier was a 7-2 loss at Portland May 14, but Sporting has not lost since. Despite missing two of their top offensive playmakers to injury, and others missing action because of national team assignments and suspensions for card accumulation, things seem to be turning slightly.

Just don’t expect Vermes to paint a rosy picture.

“The guys have been a great job of dealing with (the absences) and finding a way, week after week,” Vermes said. “There really is no continuity at the moment. But the guys have embraced the challenge. It’s a team challenge, but it’s individual challenges as well, because we’re playing guys in positions they wouldn’t normally play. The group’s mentality around that has been top-class.”

Sporting again will be without Daniel Salloi, who received a suspension of one additional match for “violent conduct” that earned him a red card May 18 against the Colorado Rapids.

Vancouver (3-7-2, 11 points) has been gathering steam as well, going 3-1-2 in all competitions in May. They defeated Cavalry FC on PKs in Canadian Championship competition Wednesday. In their last MLS match, they fell 2-1 to Charlotte.

Tosaint Ricketts scored his second goal of the season in the second minute of play. Charlotte scored six minutes later to even the match. Charlotte then scored the deciding goal in the 85th minute.

“It was just some very bad luck at the end,” head coach Vanni Sartini said after the match. “We didn’t deserve to lose. We fought against a lot of obstacles in this game, with a lot of players out because of COVID. We put on a very good game.”

MLB Jameson Taillon dazzles as Yankees blank Rays

Jameson Taillon faced just one batter over the minimum in eight dominant innings, Gleyber Torres and Matt Carpenter homered and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 on Friday night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Taillon (5-1) allowed hits to Randy Arozarena and Manuel Margot in his 93-pitch outing. After his fifth-inning leadoff single, Arozarena was caught stealing.

Taillon struck out five and didn’t issue a walk, lowering his ERA to 2.49 in his ninth start.

The Yankees finished with six hits, while the Rays managed only two. No hitter on either club produced more than one hit.

Making his fifth start of the season, Jeffrey Springs (2-2) was sharp the first time through New York’s lineup, but the visitors got to him with the two deep shots in the fourth.

The left-hander went a career-long six innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He fanned six without a walk.

Margot doubled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the American League’s longest active stretch.

The Yankees moved to 16-6 on the road, while Tampa Bay fell to 5-9 against teams with winning records.

Joey Gallo and Kyle Higashioka opened the third with consecutive singles — Gallo’s hit broke an 0-for-20 slump — but Springs escaped by getting a long flyout to the right field warning track by Anthony Rizzo to keep the game scoreless.

In the following inning, the Yankees went beyond the warning track twice to go up 2-0.

Torres launched a 438-foot rocket to left-center on Springs’ 91-mph fastball for his eighth homer. Two batters later, Carpenter recorded his first hit with his new club — a towering pop to right field on a similar fastball.

Meanwhile, Taillon breezed through four innings and retired the first 12 Tampa Bay hitters he faced before Arozarena slashed a hard grounder to center field to lead off the fifth.

Clay Holmes, who hadn’t been scored on in 23 straight innings, relieved Taillon in the ninth.

Holmes whiffed Vidal Brujan looking, got a groundout from pinch hitter Francisco Mejia and retired Kevin Kiermaier on a swinging third strike to record his sixth save as the Yankees won their fourth straight game.

MLB Orioles score 10 runs in late innings to turn back Red Sox

Anthony Santander homered and later drove in the tie-breaking run with a ninth-inning single as the visiting Baltimore Orioles rallied from a pair of six-run deficits to stun the Boston Red Sox 12-8 on Friday night in the opener of a five-game series.

The Orioles scored 10 runs across the final three innings to win for just the fifth time in their last 14 games.

The comeback came against one of the hottest teams in baseball, as the Red Sox had been on an offensive tear. But Boston’s bullpen let it down in this one.

Xander Bogaerts crushed a three-run home run in a four-run first inning, and the Red Sox appeared in good shape for most of the night. Garrett Whitlock pitched six strong innings in a starting role.

The Red Sox lost for only the second time in their last nine games. They had scored 16 runs in two games this week in road wins against the Chicago White Sox.

Austin Hays and Jorge Mateo also homered and Rougned Odor and Ramon Urias each provided three hits for Baltimore.

Rafael Devers had three of Boston’s 14 hits, and teammate J.D. Martinez, who leads the majors with a .379 batting average, went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

After the Orioles went ahead in the ninth, they tacked on three more runs on Hirokazu Sawamura’s wild pitch, Ryan Mountcastle’s sacrifice fly and Odor’s single.

Cionel Perez (3-0), who threw one pitch to end the eighth, was the winner. Matt Strahm (2-2) took the loss.

Baltimore’s first seven runs came on homers. Santander and Hays hit two-run homers and Mateo drilled a three-run shot.

Whitlock retired the first 10 Baltimore batters until he walked Trey Mancini in the fourth and Santander followed with his eighth home run of the season.

It was a rough outing for Orioles starter Kyle Bradish, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings and was charged with six runs on six hits.

Boston’s first run came on an error after Devers’ single brought in Enrique Hernandez. Two batters later, Bogaerts cranked his fifth homer this year, all in home games.

Alex Verdugo belted a ground-rule double to center field in the second, driving in two more runs for the Red Sox.

Boston was up 8-2 when Mateo’s third homer of the season came in the seventh off reliever Jake Diekman.

Then Hays went deep in the eighth off John Schreiber to cut the gap to 8-7. The tying run came later in the inning with two outs. Ramon Urias reached on an infield single, but a throwing error on third baseman Devers allowed Odor to score.

MLS Rapids aim to remain sterling at home vs. Nashville SC

0

The Colorado Rapids can continue a historic streak at home Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo., when they host Nashville SC for the first ever meeting between the clubs.

Nashville (5-4-4, 19 points) sits in sixth place in the Western Conference and is the only team in the West with a goal differential of zero. The club has scored 15 goals and allowed the same amount.

The Rapids (5-5-3, 18 points) are right behind Nashville, and are undefeated at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this season with five wins and two draws. With their 1-0 win over Seattle on Sunday, Colorado’s unbeaten run at home is up to 23 regular-season games (14 wins and nine draws), which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLS history.

Colorado can tie the third-longest streak in league history — 24 games without a loss — if it wins or ties on Saturday.

Nashville is set to play its 10th road game of the season, out of 14 total matches, after its new stadium opened weeks into the regular season and necessitated road games early on.

The Tennessee club has lost only two of its last nine MLS matches (4-2-3 record). Nashville has scored twice in each of its last two matches, something the franchise has never done in three straight MLS games, including the playoffs.

According to MLS, Colorado is the only team in the league that has not scored or conceded a goal in the opening 15 minutes of a match in 2022. The Rapids lead the league with six goals between the 16th and 30th minutes.

Nashville is coming off a tight U.S. Open Cup win earlier in the week to advance to the tournament quarterfinals. Hany Mukhtar, who’s tied for the team lead with four goals in MLS action, scored in the 89th minute for a 2-1 win over Louisville City FC.

“I’m looking at the clock and knowing we’ve got a game at the weekend (in MLS),” Nashville coach Gary Smith said. “The goal scored in the final minute was a real relief.”

Colorado coach Robin Fraser reached 50 wins as an MLS boss with his team’s win over Seattle.

“The biggest thing that that means to me, honestly, is that I look back at the time I’ve spent here, and how much I’ve enjoyed it,” Fraser told the team website.

Diego Rubio leads the Rapids with six goals this year.

MLB Dodgers recall RHP Ryan Pepiot for third time

The Dodgers recalled right-hander Ryan Pepiot for the third time this month and scheduled one of the organization’s top pitching prospects to start Friday night’s road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Pepiot, 24, has made two previous starts this season, including one against Arizona on May 17. He received a no-decision after allowing three runs to the Diamondbacks on two hits over four innings.

In seven major league innings over his two outings, Pepiot has eight strikeouts, but he also has allowed eight walks. He made his major league debut May 11 at Pittsburgh.

The former third-round draft pick is 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.

To make room on the active roster, the Dodgers optioned right-handed reliever Phil Bickford to Oklahoma City. Bickford, 26, has a 3.45 ERA in 17 appearances this season.

MLS Stingy NYCFC sets sights on Minnesota United

0

New York City FC will try to become just the fourth team in MLS history to record six consecutive shutouts when they face Minnesota United on Saturday night at Saint Paul, Minn.

NYCFC, the defending MLS Cup champions, tied a club record with their fifth consecutive shutout in a 1-0 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire on Sunday and have allowed one total shot on goal over the last three games.

Goalkeeper Sean Johnson, called into U.S. men’s national team camp on Friday, leads MLS with seven shutouts.

NYCFC (7-3-2, 23 points) hasn’t allowed a goal in MLS action since April 24 when they defeated Toronto FC 5-4 in a home game at Citi Field.

Brazilian striker Heber scored on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute for the lone goal in Sunday’s win over Chicago. Johnson finished with one save.

“Defensively it was very good,” NYCFC coach Ronny Deila said. “Everybody was organized, and we didn’t give away anything.”

The Los Angeles Galaxy were the last MLS team to post six clean consecutive shutouts, accomplishing the feat from Oct. 2, 2009 thru April 10, 2010.

Minnesota United (5-5-3, 18 points) ended a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) with a 2-1 victory at FC Dallas on Sunday as Robin Lod scored a goal in his third straight MLS contest. No Loons player has ever scored in four consecutive MLS games.

However, Minnesota limps into the contest following a 2-1 home loss to Union Omaha, a USL League One team, on Wednesday in a U.S Open Cup Round of 16 match that ranks as one of the worst losses in franchise history. Lod and star playmaker Emanuel Reynoso both sat out the contest.

“Embarrassing,” Loons coach Adrian Heath said. “Looked like they wanted it more than we did tonight, which is a poor reflection on us.”

Deila said his team — which is one point behind the first-place Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference standings and comes in off an impressive 1-0 win over New England on Wednesday in the U.S. Open Cup — can’t overlook the Loons.

“That doesn’t affect anything,” Deila said of Minnesota United’s surprising loss. “They have a clear style of play. They are a tough team to meet and fight against. … We need to do as we always do, prepare well, be mentally and physically ready and go out and execute.”
