NHL News: Hurricanes standout Seth Jarvis (shoulder) expected to miss start of next season

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis has undergone shoulder surgery and will likely miss the start of next season for the defending Stanley Cup champions, general manager Eric Tulsky said late Friday.

Jarvis, who led the Hurricanes in the regular season with 32 goals, had initially injured the shoulder in the 2023-24 season and will be out “probably four to six months,” Tulsky said when addressing media after the first round of the NHL draft.

Tulsky also said that forward Eric Robinson had a procedure on his knee and is expected to return in six to eight weeks, meaning he should be available for training camp in September.

Jarvis, 24, had an operation to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff that did not prevent him from continuing to play in the ensuing seasons as Carolina made deep playoff runs. Jarvis also played for Team Canada in international competition.

“Shoulders are tough. Once it goes, you can keep aggravating it and limit what you can do… Eventually, it needs to be repaired,” Tulsky said. “You can strengthen it and try to get through it, and he did that for a while.

“Last year, we had a deep run (Eastern Conference finals) — if we had missed the playoffs last year, he probably would have had this last summer, I would guess,” Tulsky continued. “But we had a deep run, and he started looking at the timeline and didn’t want to miss a big chunk of the season. Then we got to this year and had another deep run, and at some point, you just need to do it. You can’t be limited for the rest of your career. You start thinking, ‘Maybe we’re going to have deep runs every year,’ just bite the bullet and get it done.”

Jarvis had 66 points (32 goals, 34 assists), a plus-6 rating, 23 penalty minutes, 27 blocks and 81 hits in 71 regular-season games.

He totaled 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and a plus-3 rating in 19 playoff games in the Hurricanes’ run to the Stanley Cup Final, where they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games.

For his career, Jarvis has 279 points (128 goals, 151 assists), a plus-62 rating, 83 penalty minutes, 199 blocks and 431 hits in 327 regular-season games. He has another 54 points (23 goals, 31 assists) in 74 career postseason games.

Carolina selected Jarvis in the first round (13th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Robinson, 31, had 18 points (12 goals, six assists) with a plus-7 rating, eight penalty minutes, 13 blocks and 90 hits in 67 games this season for Carolina. He added eight points (three goals, five assists), a plus-5 rating, 16 penalty minutes, four blocks and 43 hits in 19 playoff games.

For his career, Robinson has 141 points (66 goals, 75 assists), a plus-9 rating, 77 penalty minutes, 124 blocks and 723 hits in 455 regular-season games for the Columbus Blue Jackets (2017-24), Buffalo Sabres (2024) and Hurricanes (2024-present).
