MLB News: Willy Adames key part of pivotal 8th inning as Giants beat Rockies

Willy Adames had three hits, including an RBI single as part of a two-run eighth inning, Trevor McDonald combined with two relievers on a four-hitter and the San Francisco Giants outlasted the visiting Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

After the teams traded single tallies in the first four innings, the Giants manufactured the difference-making runs after Rafael Devers worked a walk from Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela (9-2) in the eighth.

After Jung Hoo Lee flied out, Bryce Eldridge sent Devers to third with a single and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Grant McCray, who stole second base on the next pitch. When catcher Hunter Goodman’s throw went into center field for an error, Devers jogged home as the go-ahead run.

Adames then followed with his third single of the game, bringing home McCray from third.

Erik Miller (2-0), who struck out Mickey Moniak with the score tied and a runner at second to end the top of the eighth, earned the win. The left-hander stayed on for the ninth, preserving the two-run advantage despite surrendering a leadoff single to Goodman.

Seeking a 2-2 split in the series, the game got off to an exciting start for the Rockies when Jake McCarthy launched an inside-the-park home run on McDonald’s second pitch. The blast to right-center field only momentarily bounced away from right fielder Lee, giving McDonald just enough time to race home ahead of the throw.

The homer was McCarthy’s 10th of the season.

That was the only run the Rockies could muster against McDonald, who allowed just three hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out four.

The Giants got even in the fourth when, with two outs, Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen walked Eldridge and served up consecutive singles to Adames and Drew Gilbert, the latter plating the run.

Lorenzen was pulled after five innings, having given up just the one run and five hits. He struck out one and walked three.

Heliot Ramos chipped in with two hits for the Giants, who took three of four from the Rockies to even the season series at 5-5.

Goodman had two of Colorado’s four total hits in a game that featured no extra-base hits after McCarthy’s leadoff blow.
