Casey Mize tossed seven outstanding innings in his longest start of the season and the visiting Detroit Tigers scored seven runs in the first four innings during a 7-3 victory over the slumping New York Yankees on Monday night.

Mize (3-5) allowed a double to rookie Spencer Jones that started the third and nothing else. The right-hander constantly got ahead of hitters and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. It was Mize’s third career double-digit strikeout game, and he finished his outing by fanning five of the final six hitters.

Mize threw 58 of 88 pitches for strikes after getting tagged for four runs by the Yankees on Tuesday in Detroit.

Rookies Hao-Yu Lee and Kevin McGonigle drove in two runs apiece for the Tigers, who bounced back after a pair of late-inning home losses to the Houston Astros. Matt Vierling, Dillon Dingler and Spencer Torkelson also drove in runs as the Tigers scored five unearned runs due to errors by New York third baseman Jose Caballero and left fielder Cody Bellinger.

Torkelson hit an RBI single in the first off Ryan Weathers (3-6) after Dingler doubled and advanced on a passed ball by catcher Austin Wells.

Zach McKinstry started the second with a single and scored when Caballero made a throwing error on a grounder by Vierling.

Dingler followed Caballero’s errant throw with a sacrifice fly, and the Tigers loaded the bases for Lee, who extended the lead to 5-0 with a single to left.

Vierling started the fourth with a single and Dingler reached when Bellinger misplayed his fly ball in the corner. McGonigle followed by lacing a 1-2 changeup from reliever Yerry De los Santos into left field for a seven-run lead.

Weathers allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in a season-low 1 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out three and walked one.

The Yankees tied a season worst by losing their fifth straight game.

New York also lost Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fourth inning when the second baseman collided with right fielder Jasson Dominguez on a fly ball by Lee. The Yankees said Chisholm was in the concussion protocol.

Drew Sommers allowed a three-run homer to pinch hitter Amed Rosario in the eighth before getting two strikeouts. Drew Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish up for the Tigers.
