The Boston Red Sox recalled right-hander Brayan Bello from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, adding a fresh arm before their final game ahead of the All-Star break.

Bello relieved rookie starter Payton Tolle in the series finale against the host New York Mets, with Boston trying to avoid stretching an already taxed bullpen. The Red Sox also have a doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, their first day back from the break.

Bello pitched 4 1/3 innings on Sunday, allowing two hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts in 55 pitches but did not figure in the decision. The run came on Francisco Lindor’s solo homer in the sixth, but Boston beat New York 3-2 in 10 innings for its ninth consecutive victory — all on the road.

He was optioned June 5 after going 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA in 61 innings over 12 appearances that included eight starts. The 27-year-old registered a 4.34 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings in four starts with Worcester. For his career entering Sunday, Bello had a 41-42 record with a 4.32 ERA across 112 appearances (105 starts) in five seasons with the Red Sox.

In a corresponding move to make room for Bello on the roster, the Red Sox designated left-hander Danny Coulombe for assignment following Saturday’s game against the Mets. In a move Sunday, Boston activated infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Worcester.

Sogard, 28, has not played for Boston since May 30 because of a right oblique strain. He is batting .257 (9-for-35) with two RBIs in 12 games. For his career, he is batting .264 with 19 RBIs in 73 games over parts of three seasons.

Coulombe, 36, was 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA, 15 walks and 10 strikeouts in 22 innings over 29 relief appearances in his first season with Boston.

For his career, Coulombe is 17-12 with five saves, a 3.43 ERA, 130 walks and 322 strikeouts in 338 2/3 innings over 372 regular-season games (two starts) for six different teams since 2014.
