On Wednesday, the Michigan Supreme Court decided that former president Donald Trump could appear as a candidate on the state’s primary ballot. This ruling is considered to be a victory for Trump. Michigan is a battleground state. There have been different types of challenges filed in more than 30 states against Trump. Many have been dismissed but some are still pending. Michigan is expected to hold its primary on February 27.
Donald Trump posted at length on social media about the decision of the Michigan Supreme Court. He once again mentioned on his social media platform Truth Social that the 2020 elections had been stolen.
Ron Fein, who is the legal director of Free Speech for People, also released a statement. His group had sought to get Trump disqualified from running in the upcoming elections. The statement read, “The Michigan Supreme Court did not rule out that the question of Donald Trump’s disqualification for engaging in insurrection against the U.S. Constitution may be resolved at a later stage.”
The court has ruled on the primary election. It has not ruled on the decision whether Trump remains eligible to run in the 2024 elections that would allow him to serve as president of the U.S.
Colorado is the only state, as yet that ruled that Donald Trump’s name should be removed from the Republican’s 2024 primary ballot. The state’s top court ruled in a 4-3 opinion that Trump’s name should be removed from the ballot as a result of his role in the Jan 6 insurrection where a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol and this led to chaos, death, and destruction.
The Colorado decision was made after the court followed a trial that was able to establish that Trump was responsible for inciting violence after he lost the 2020 election. Although the lawyers in Michigan wanted a similar trial, this was turned down by the state’s courts.
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to answer the question of Donald Trump’s eligibility to run in the 2024 presidential elections but the Court has not as yet taken up the matter.
