Ex-Iona G Adam Njie Jr. ruled ineligible by NCAA over point shaving

The NCAA ruled former Iona guard Adam Njie Jr. permanently ineligible on Thursday for sports betting violations by providing game information to known bettors.

Njie agreed to the violations that occurred during his freshman season of 2024-25. He transferred to Dayton before last season but did not play after the school was alerted to an eligibility issue. Njie entered the transfer portal and signed with Hampton in May.

According to an agreement released by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel, Njie confirmed that he told a bettor that he would throw the first half of game between Iona and Rice on Dec. 1, 2024. Two bettors had placed three bets totaling $15,500 that Rice would cover the first-half point spread, the Mississippi Gaming Commission reported.

Njie said he did not go through with the plan, according to the NCAA, which found evidence that one of the bettors threatened him with physical harm after losing the bets. Njie told the bettor that to make up for it, he would throw the first half of Iona’s next game against Sacred Heart. Njie told investigators that he did not follow through.

“The act of sharing information with a bettor is prohibited by NCAA legislation and is treated the same as point shaving from an NCAA enforcement perspective,” the NCAA said in its announcement on Thursday, “regardless of whether the student-athlete goes through with throwing the game.”

Njie started 28 of 33 games played in the 2024-25 season for Iona and averaged 12.4 points, 4.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 29.3 minutes.

He was selected to the 2024-25 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Freshman and 2025 All-MAAC Tournament teams.
