On Tuesday, a Los Angeles judge sentenced celebrity rapper Tony Lanez to a 10-year prison term. The Canadian rapper had been found guilty of shooting Megan Pete also known as celebrity rapper Megan Thee Stallion and was to be sentenced in February 2023. However, his lawyers filed a motion requesting a new trial in March that was denied. His sentencing date was postponed several times and he was finally sentenced on August 8, 2023.

Daystar Peterson, whose rapper name is Tony Lanez, submitted letters of recommendation from family members, non-profit organizations leaders and fellow musicians including Iggy Azalea as his attorneys were asking for probation, three years in prison or probation and mandatory rehabilitation as they said that he suffered from childhood trauma as well as alcohol addiction.

Prosecutors asked for a 13-year prison term. They said that he had violated pre-court orders thrice. The rapper had also “waged a campaign to humiliate and re-traumatize Megan.”

On December 23, Peterson was found guilty of three felony firearms counts relating to an incident where Lanez allegedly shot celebrity rapper Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, on her feet. They had left a Hollywood Hills party hosted at the home of Kylie Jenner. He has been in prison, without bond, since the verdict was pronounced.

The high-profile case had a few twists and turns including the defendant’s team claiming that there was insufficient DNA evidence as well as a case of jealousy between Pete and Kelsey Harris, who was her former friend as well as her ex-assistant.

The prosecutors had a surgeon on stand who said that he removed bullet fragments from Pete’s foot. Harris, a key witness for the prosecution said that she didn’t see or didn’t remember the circumstances of the shooting as she had consumed alcohol and was also dealing with anxiety issues as well as postpartum depression. Pete a,k.a. celebrity American rapper Megan Thee Stallion emotionally recounted the incident to the jury who found Peterson a.k.a. rapper Tony Lanez guilty.

Although Megan Pete was not in attendance at the sentence hearing, the celebrity rapper sent a statement that was read by the prosecutors in court on Monday afternoon. It said, “I struggle with being present. After everything that occurred, I cannot bring myself back to being in the same room with Tory. He paid bloggers to disseminate false information; he treated my trauma like a joke when I could’ve been dead. He blamed the system, he blamed the press, and of late he is using his childhood trauma to justify his actions.”

Celebrity Meghan Thee Stallion has also said, “Slowly but surely, I’m healing. But I’ll never be the same. His crime warrants the full weight of the law.”

Peterson and his legal team said that they would appeal the court’s decision of a 10-year prison term.
