Brown head coach Mike Martin stepped down on Monday to take an assistant coaching job at Michigan.

Brown thanked Martin for “a distinguished 14-year coaching career” in a statement on social media. Michigan also confirmed the move in a news release.

The national champion Wolverines’ staff had an opening after Mike Boynton Jr. was promoted to head coach in the wake of the Dallas Mavericks hiring Dusty May to the same position.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Boynton for the opportunity to join the Michigan basketball family,” Martin said in a statement. “Michigan has established itself as one of the premier programs in college basketball, and it’s easy to see why. The championship culture, the people and the commitment to excellence all make this a special place. I’m excited to get to work with our student-athletes and help build on everything this program has accomplished.”

“Mike is someone I’ve admired for a long time,” Boynton said in a statement. “He’s an outstanding coach, an exceptional teacher and one of the best recruiters in the game, but more than anything, he’s a great person who truly invests in his players. At Brown, he’s built consistently competitive teams through player development and a winning culture, and those values align perfectly with what we’re building here in Ann Arbor. We’re excited to welcome Mike, Kristin and their daughters to the Michigan family.”

Martin, 44, served as head coach of his alma mater from 2012-26 after playing for the Bears from 2000-04. He had a record of 171-202 as a head coach, his best season coming when Brown went 20-12 in 2018-19.

Brown will conduct a full search outside the university for Martin’s replacement, ESPN reported.
