President Joe Biden returned to the US after a historic visit to France, which included his participation in the 80th anniversary of D-Day events in Normandy. On the last day of his visit, he also made a poignant visit to an American cemetery that marks the resting place of thousands of American soldiers located an hour away from Paris.
President Biden reiterated the nation’s commitment to its allies when he spoke, whether on D-Day or other occasions. The main focus of his visit to France was to attend the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when allied troops from America, Canada, and the U.K. launched a massive amphibious attack on Hitler along the coast of Normandy, leading to his defeat and the end of World War II.
President Joe Biden honored over 2,200 U.S. soldiers who died during World War I. On Saturday, he visited the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, about 85 kilometers east of Paris, and then returned to the nation.
Biden placed a wreath at the chapel located in the cemetery. The cemetery has thousands of white headstones as the American soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War have been laid to rest in this cemetery.
On Saturday, Biden spoke about the close ties between the US and France when French President Emmanuel Macron hosted him at the Elysee Palace.
Biden said, “This week, we have once again shown the world…the power of allies, what we can achieve when we stand together. That’s what the relationship between France and the United States exemplifies.”
Biden also said that France has been America’s “first friend” and that it remained one of the nation’s best friends. President Joe Biden has tried to rebuild relations with Europe throughout his first term, as relations between the US and Europe had stagnated four years ago.
