Box office analysts observe the second week of sales to estimate the longevity of a film. When the drop is lower than the movie is expected to have a longer run in theaters. After the opening weekend, both Barbie and Oppenheimer saw a 43 percent drop in sales which is much lower than general drops of blockbuster films that can range between a 50 to 70 percent drop in the second week.
Studios houses are upbeat with the initial sales from both these blockbusters as it is also an indication that moviegoers are continuing to flock to theaters to watch films. There are also no plans for a release of other blockbusters and the workers strike has also slowed down or shut the industry. So, these films might have a much longer than anticipated run-in theaters.
Barbie has now earned $351 million in domestic sales and has collected almost $800 million including global sales. The Warner Bros movie made in collaboration with Greta Gerwig and Mattel could even cross a billion dollars in ticket sales.
Oppenheimer has also done well at the box office with a current domestic gross sale of $175 million while global sales stand at $405 million. Cillian Murphy starring as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. playing Lewis Strauss capturing audiences across the world.
Both Barbie and Oppenheimer, also called Barbenheimer by some, brought cheer to the movie industry as they inched towards the movie ticket sales that were prevalent at pre-pandemic times. The overall domestic box office is behind pre-pandemic times by 16 percent. This year’s domestic sales are not expected to reach pre-pandemic levels as big releases are being moved by studios to 2024.
