ATP News: Alexander Zverev now No. 2, ahead of injured Carlos Alcaraz

Alexander Zverev’s back-to-back stellar Grand Slam performances have elevated him to No. 2 in the world behind Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner of Italy.

The ATP rankings revealed Monday have Zverev inching into second ahead of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who missed both the French Open and Wimbledon with a wrist injury.

Zverev won the French Open last month for his first career major title and reached Sunday’s Wimbledon final before falling to Sinner in four sets.

“I think I’ve been pushing those guys,” Zverev said after the loss to Sinner. “I haven’t beaten them this year, but I’ve pushed them to the limits, I would say.”

Since the start of 2024, Sinner and Alcaraz have won 10 of 11 Grand Slam titles — five apiece. Zverev is the only other winner during the span.

Zverev is aiming to turn the top twosome into a trio of top players.

“There was always this conversation, ‘Who will be the third guy?'” Zverev said. “I’ve always been the third guy, but I was just far away from those two. But I’ve always been No. 3 in a way. So if I get closer to them … it would be great.”

The German reached No. 2 before in 2022.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime is fourth with Australia’s Alex de Minaur fifth and Ben Shelton sixth.

Serbian Novak Djokovic is in the seventh slot, followed by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. Taylor Fritz rounds out the top 10.

A big riser was Brit wild card Arthur Fery, who went from 114th to 36th after stunningly reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon.

In women’s tennis, Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova moved up to a career-best No. 7 by beating Karolina Muchova in three sets in an all-Czech final. Muchova also achieved a career-high ranking of No. 6.
