Messina Denaro was apprehended at a clinic where he was being treated for an unidentified medical problem, according to Carabinieri Gen. Pasquale Angelosanto, commander of the police force’s special operations squad. He spent 30 years on the run. Messina Denaro was transferred to a secret location by police shortly after his detention, according to Italian state television.
He was a young man when he went into hiding, and he is now 60 years old. Messina Denaro, who had a power base in the western Sicilian port city of Trapani, was considered Sicily’s Cosa Nostra top boss even while a fugitive.
He has been on the run since 1993 and was rated one of Europe’s most sought men by Europol. Messina Denaro is believed to have ordered hundreds of Mafia-related murders and was sentenced to life in prison in absentia for his many crimes, most notably his involvement in the separate murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.
In 2020, he was sentenced to life in prison for lethal explosions in Milan, Florence, and Rome in the late 1990s, as well as the murder and torture of an enemy’s 11-year-old son who testified against the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

In 1992, two explosions in Sicily killed prominent anti-Mafia prosecutors, Giovanni Falcone, and Paolo Borsellino. He was convicted of a number of heinous crimes, including the murder of a Mafia turncoat’s young kid, who was strangled, and his body was destroyed in an acid vat.

“It is a victory for all the police forces that have worked together over these long years to bring the dangerous fugitive to justice,” Italy’s chief of Police, Lamberto Giannini, said in a statement commending the Carabinieri Italy’s military police along with the Palermo Public Prosecutor’s Office.
He was the last of three long-running fugitive top-level Mafia bosses who had evaded capture for decades. Messina Denaro, who was prosecuted in absentia and convicted of dozens of killings, faces many life sentences.
