Ex-Alabama basketball player Darius Miles says he’s innocent of capital murder charges. Darius Miles has been charged with capital murder in a shooting incident that happened Sunday morning near The Strip area in Tuscaloosa. His attorneys say he is innocent. Miles is sitting in jail without bond. Due to the arrest, Darius was let go from the Alabama basketball team.
His attorneys released this statement. “Darius Miles and his family are heartbroken tonight over the death of Jamea Jonae Harris,” said the release from Birmingham law firm Boles Holmes White LLC, which was dated Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. “While Darius has been accused of being involved with this tragedy, he maintains his innocence and looks forward to his day in court.”
According to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, the shooting occurred in the 400 block of Grace Street off University Boulevard and appears to be the result of a brief altercation between the victims and suspects. Another suspect, Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland, is also charged with capital murder and is being held without bond. According to an email from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, Davis is not associated with the University of Alabama. Both Darius Miles and Michael Lynn David are being charged as their actions have caused 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris of Birmingham death.
“It appears that the only motivation for this was a brief altercation that these individuals had with the victim while out on The Strip,” unit captain Jack Kennedy said.
With these two individuals when there is a special circumstance, capital murder is on the table. The capital murder accusation was made in this case because it comes under a part of Alabama Criminal Code Title 13A-5-40 that states “murder committed by or through the use of a dangerous weapon while the victim is in a vehicle.”

ESPN reports, “At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on the Strip,’ Kennedy said at a news conference Sunday evening. They didn’t have a previous relationship, he said.
Darius miles attended IMG Academy before arriving at UA and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. Darius is a third-year college student. He had a lot of talent and promise in his career as he was accepted to Georgetown, Rhode Island, Rutgers, and Seton Hall but chose Alabama State.
