Francisco Severo Torres tried to open the emergency exit while stabbing a flight attendant three times in the neck with a broken metal spoon on a Boston to Los Angeles flight on a Sunday.
The flight went smoothly for five hours and then the attack began towards the crew members. A flight attendant noticed the emergency slide arming lever had been deactivated and the door’s locking handle had been pulled out of its fully secured position.
Passengers and the crew on board tackled Torres, who was subsequently brought into custody once the plane landed.
Torres allegedly admitted to police that he used a broken spoon from an airline washroom as a weapon, according to a criminal complaint. and it was reportedly admitted to police that he attempted to open the emergency door before “getting the idea” to leap out of the aircraft.
Francisco Severo Torres, 33, is charged with one count of attempting to use a hazardous weapon to tamper with flight attendants and crew members. Torres was jailed pending a hearing scheduled for Thursday after being apprehended at Boston Logan International Airport on Monday.

In a 2017 incident, Torres was accused of attacking a family member while attempting to steal a set of car keys. He has a history of outbursts and odd conduct. A rambling letter written by Torres to a Massachusetts judge was found in the case file related to it.
In it, Torres talked about being watched and the subject of untrue reports, his time spent on the streets of Los Angeles, his artwork, and his worry that a doctor had been paid to interfere with his health. The last sentence of the letter accused a sizable portion of his community of “keeping a secret.”
