As she completed the first part of her tour to the continent, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled a $1 billion plan to increase women’s economic development in Africa in Ghana on Wednesday.
“Advancing the economic status of women and girls is not only a matter of human rights, justice, and fairness – it is also a strategic imperative that reduces poverty and promotes sustainable economic growth,” Harris’ office said on Wednesday.
The program, which was mostly supported by the private sector, was unveiled by Harris’ office in Accra. The American vice president then departed for Tanzania from Ghana.
Harris has already made several aid pledges, including a $100 million investment in coastal West African nations at risk of jihadist violence spreading from the Sahel and a $139 million grant for Ghana’s economic and cultural growth.
Her trip to Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia, which is expected to last until April 2, follows a summit between the United States and Africa in December in Washington, D.C., where President Joe Biden called for a broad partnership with Africa as the United States tries to assert its influence on the continent in the face of growing influence from China and Russia.
The tour comes after President Joe Biden met with African leaders in December in Washington as the US looks to counterbalance the rising influence of China and Russia on the region.
