Walmart (WMT) is the nation’s largest retailer, making inroads in large Asian countries and Mexico. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer is expanding operations in Asia and neighboring countries. The second quarter’s results show that its investments in these countries have paid off, as there was an increase in both net and e-commerce sales.
In its recent quarter results, Walmart reported a 14.3 percent increase in global operating income. Net sales jumped by 7.1 percent, while e-commerce sales increased 18 percent.
Kath McLay, the CEO of Walmart International, told Yahoo Finance that Walmart was “tailoring its portfolio to be in the right markets.”
She also said, “I’m happy with the portfolio that we’ve got. We’re always open to exploring opportunities, but I’m not actively pursuing other markets to go into it.”
Walmart is focusing on three large international markets: China, India, and Mexico, as well as smaller ones. It will continue to offer low prices for the best value available, as it does in the US.
On its website, Walmart says it has more than 5,400 retail units worldwide and employs 550,000 associates in 18 countries.
It says its “strategy is to build strong local businesses powered by Walmart” and has a “tailored approach to business in each market.”
