United States health officials are preparing to screen airline passengers at three major airports for the Marburg virus. Those who fly in from Rwanda will have to meet with staffers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assess their health. Symptoms of the Marburg virus, which is similar to the Ebola virus, can appear two to 21 days after exposure.

The CDC released the following statement in early October: “Starting mid-October, airline passengers who have been in Rwanda in the last 21 days will have their travel to the United States rerouted.”

CDC health officials will meet these travelers at Chicago O’Hare, JFK, or Washington Dulles Airport. They will be screened for temperature and other visible symptoms, including sore throat or vomiting and rashes that generally appear on the torso.

In 2023, the CDC alerted doctors in the US about the Marburg virus, although it mentioned a low risk of spread. However, in early October, the government agency issued a Level 3 threat for travel to Rwanda. A Level 3 threat recommends that US citizens reconsider non-essential travel to a particular nation.

Marburg virus is a rare yet deadly disease. It was first reported in 1967 in a city in Germany, after which it was named. Since then, it has seen several outbreaks in Africa.

Marburg can be contacted through
contact with blood or body fluids of a person infected with the virus
contact with contaminated objects used by the infected person
contact with fruit bats and non-human primates infected with Marburg.

Marburg can be classified as a “viral hemorrhagic fever”, according to the CDC. Symptoms include
fever
chills
headache
muscle ache
rash
chest pain
sore throat
nausea
vomiting
diarrhea
bruising and
unexplained bleeding.

There is no treatment or vaccine or treatments for the Marburg virus as yet. The CDC advises possible patients to “isolate immediately and seek medical care.”
