Between July 26 and August 11, 2024, Paris will host the Olympic Games. Notwithstanding the protest of thirty-eight civil society organizations, the French National Assembly has approved the deployment of algorithmic video surveillance during the 2024 Paris Olympics

According to the government, algorithmic video surveillance can identify “pre-determined incidents,” unusual behavior, and crowd swells, helping to protect the safety of the millions of tourists who are anticipated to swarm the French capital next summer.

The proposed law for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games passed a committee vote earlier this month after receiving support from French senators in January. The upcoming bill’s Article 7, which permits automated analysis of surveillance video from fixed and drone cameras, was approved by the French National Assembly on Thursday.
