A preschool teacher and another person have been accused of killing a man whose body was discovered rolling down a hill near Santa Cruz. Twenty-four-year-old Oliver Waterfall of San Jose, was discovered dead around 7 p.m. on April 11 near Highway 9, according to a news release from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. According to sheriff’s officials, the county coroner’s office found that Waterfall had died from a gunshot wound.
The sheriff’s office stated that the death was looked into as suspicious; an autopsy showed the cause of death to be a gunshot wound; and the death was deemed a homicide. Twenty-seven-year-old Dennis Novoa of San Jose, and twenty-two-year-old Diana Ornelas of Santa Clara, the preschool teacher, were taken into custody on suspicion of murder on Wednesday, April 26.
Diana Ornelas appeared in court on Friday. She was accused of first-degree murder without bail. Dennis Novoa was also accused with murder in connection with the death of Waterfall.

Nearly two months after the alleged killing, Ornelas allegedly kept up the toddlers’ education. Sheriff’s deputies claim that although Waterfall had been slain a month earlier, his bones were discovered in April in California on a mountainside. She worked as a teacher at the Children’s Centre of the Stanford Community, a creche for Stanford University students, staff, and professors who have children between the ages of 8 weeks and 5 years old.

Ornelas was detained at the Children’s Centre of the Stanford Community, a kindergarten on the Stanford campus where she was employed, reported SFGate. Authorities reportedly detained Ornelas during “nap time” away from youngsters, according to an email sent to parents, The Stanford Daily said. Ornelas, according to university officials, is no longer employed on campus.
Investigators who knew Waterfall, Novoa, and Ornelas, said that the crime was “personal in nature,” the sheriff’s office reported. A hearing for the pair is scheduled for May 17, according to jail records in Santa Cruz.
