Warriors visit Timberwolves with road woes in tow

Two days after seeing the new-look Utah Jazz for the first time this season, the Golden State Warriors will get up-close-and-personal with Rudy Gobert in a different uniform when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors flew to the Midwest with a two-game winning streak, not surprising since their previous two games were at home. They’ve won nine of their 10 home games this season, while losing nine of 10 on the road.

En route to the NBA championship last season, the Warriors followed that same pattern in games against the Timberwolves, winning by an average of 11 points in two home games, but losing by an average of 17.5 in two visits to Minnesota.

Karl-Anthony Towns was the biggest thorn in the Warriors’ side in the Timberwolves’ home success, contributing 26 points and 11 rebounds to a 119-99 romp in January, then 39 points and nine rebounds to a 129-114 triumph in March.

Towns had 5 of 10 and 3 of 6 outings from 3-point range among his four head-to-heads with Golden State, which might not bode well for the Warriors in this year’s first meeting.

With the addition of former Jazz big man Gobert inside, Towns is shooting more 3-pointers than ever, having already hoisted 111 in 19 games. He is on pace for 479 for the season, which would be 113 more than his previous career best.

Yet, Towns’ 33.3-percent success rate currently is a career-low and comes one year after he hit at a 41.0-percent clip.

Towns’ teammates have been even less accurate on their 3-point attempts. Minnesota will take one of the league’s lowest success rates from deep into Sunday’s contest at 32.6 percent.

“If we’re shown zone, it helps to hit 3-pointers, and that’s one thing we’ve been struggling with,” Towns said. “So I expect teams to play more zone against us just because of the fact that we’re not hitting the 3.”

Gobert hasn’t been a part of the problem. He’s attempted just two 3-pointers all season, missing both, while focusing on his strong interior game. Gobert made 63.4 percent of his shots from the field, averaging 13.8 points to complement 12.8 rebounds.

While playing for Utah, Gobert averaged 15.3 points and 19.0 rebounds in three games against Golden State last season. He made 19 of his 29 shots.

Focusing on attacking the hoop might be a good strategy for the Timberwolves against the Warriors since a 3-point shootout with Golden State never is a bright idea.

In the Warriors’ just-completed two-game homestand, which featured wins over the Los Angeles Clippers and Jazz, they connected on a total of 39 shots from 3-point range, with Stephen Curry going 10 of 23, Klay Thompson 9 of 19 and Andrew Wiggins 9 of 16.

Curry hopes a defense that allowed 112.5 points in the two-game home winning streak travels to Minnesota, helping the Warriors end a run of four consecutive road games allowing 120 or more points.

“We have a little more clarity on how we connect defense and offense and then everybody starts to get shots and the flow of the game is a lot better,” he noted after Friday’s win. “It all goes together in terms of making the right simple play. Then usually the ball will find the open guy. We have confidence in whoever that is.”

NCAAF News: No. 1 Georgia stays undefeated, dominates Georgia Tech

No. 1 Georgia started slowly before pulling away from visiting Georgia Tech for a 37-14 victory on Saturday at Athens, Ga., giving the Bulldogs consecutive undefeated regular seasons for the first time in school history.

Stetson Bennett went just 10-of-18 passing for 140 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (12-0), who will face No. 5 LSU in the SEC title game on Dec. 3.

Georgia Tech (5-7) missed becoming bowl eligible for the fourth straight season after falling to its in-state rival for the fifth straight year and for the 18th time in the past 21 meetings.

The Bulldogs trailed 7-0 after the Yellow Jackets’ first drive before scoring the game’s next 37 points.

Kenny McIntosh rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and caught two passes for 96 yards for Georgia, while Brock Bowers had five catches, including a 1-yard touchdown, for 20 yards.

Georgia Tech’s Zach Gibson went 19-of-35 passing for 191 yards, with Nate McCollum catching six passes for 65 yards. Dontae Smith rushed for 34 yards on 10 carries, in addition to throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Carter.

Leading 10-7 at halftime, Georgia extended its lead to 20-7 when Jack Podlesny’s 50-yard field goal was followed by Bennett’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Bowers with 5:51 left in the third quarter.

Jamie Felix fumbled on Georgia Tech’s next play from scrimmage, with Georgia’s Robert Beal Jr. recovering on the Yellow Jackets’ 20-yard line. Podlesny’s 36-yard field goal extended the lead to 23-7 with 4:11 left in the quarter.

McIntosh followed an 83-yard reception with a 2-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 30-7 with 13:45 left in the game.

Kendall Milton’s 44-yard touchdown run made it 37-7 with 11:13 to go before Smith capped the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Carter on a halfback-option pass with 2:55 left.

Georgia Tech, which lost to Georgia 45-0 last year, took a 7-0 lead on backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh’s 7-yard touchdown with 10:43 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs pulled to within 7-3 on Podlesny’s 30-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

Georgia took the lead for good on its next possession when Bennett threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint with 7:59 left in the first half.

Blazers looking to stay aggressive against Nets

It took a career game from Jerami Grant and the continuation of an impressive hot streak by Anfernee Simons for the Portland Trail Blazers to halt a four-game skid, as an injured Damian Lillard enjoyed the dynamic performances from the bench.

Grant and Simons will attempt to follow up Friday’s big efforts against the Knicks when they visit the Brooklyn Nets to wrap up a four-game road trip Sunday afternoon.

Portland improved to 1-2 on its road trip following a wild 132-129 overtime win against the Knicks.

Lillard is accompanying the team on the trip as he recovers from a strained right calf that has kept him sidelined for the past three games and for eight games overall. Portland is 4-4 in the games Lillard has missed.

Grant scored a career-high 44 points on 10-of-20 shooting and a 21-of-28 night from the line as the Blazers attempted 51 free throws — the most in the NBA since Memphis went to the line 50 times on July 31, 2020 against Portland. It also was the most trips to the line for the Blazers since getting there 50 times against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 13, 1999.

“That was a must-win for us,” said Grant, who set a team record for free throw attempts. “We were talking about it in the locker room — we knew we had to show up and be extremely aggressive.”

Portland took 24 of its trips to the line in the second quarter when it erased a 16-point deficit to take a one-point lead at halftime. Then the Blazers saw Simons score 23 of his season-high 38 points after halftime, marking the eighth straight time the guard reached 20 points.

“I had to play those guys so many minutes to do whatever we could to try to get the win, try to stop the bleeding from the losing streak,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said.

The Nets are starting a season-high seven-game homestand after following up a 112-98 win in Toronto with a 128-117 loss at Indiana on Friday.

Brooklyn is returning home through Dec. 9 after getting outscored 40-23 in the fourth quarter by the Pacers. The Nets entered the final 12 minutes holding a six-point lead but allowed Indiana to shoot 63 percent (12 of 19) and make 12 of 16 free throws to pull away.

Kevin Durant scored 20 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter while Ben Simmons and Kyrie Irving, who each scored 20 points combined for three points in the fourth.

“It’s pretty frustrating,” said Simmons, who is averaging 15.5 points in his past six contests. “You’ve gotta take that next step. It’s easy for us to lock in for that first half, three quarters, whatever it is. We’ve got to learn how to do that the whole game, from the first to the last guy.”

The Nets are attempting to sweep the season series for the first time since 2012-13. Brooklyn rallied from an 11-point deficit for a 109-107 win in Portland on Nov. 17 when Royce O’Neal hit a putback in the final seconds.

Hornets F Gordon Hayward (shoulder) out indefinitely

Charlotte Hornets forward Gordon Hayward will be sidelined indefinitely with a fractured left shoulder.

Hayward’s agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, confirmed the diagnosis on Friday with ESPN.

Hayward, 32, has missed nine of the Hornets’ first 20 games this season. He is averaging 16.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 11 starts.

The player’s wife posted on Instagram that the team had Hayward play through the injury in his most recent game on Wednesday against the Philadelphia 76ers.

“He actually has a fractured scapula…. That they had him play with last game… that’s why he couldn’t move his arm up in the last game…..everyone who knows Gordon knows he has one goal and that’s to win and play the right way, he’s the most truthful player/person you’d find. If he’s not gonna play it’s for something more than a bruise….

“I’m gonna stop there and not get into prior things,” Robyn Hayward wrote.

She did not stop there, however.

“Just to clarify – since the team doesn’t say. It’s a fracture in the shoulder. Which is a broken bone. I’m over them not protecting players. Just was talking with a young players mom and she was saying the same thing….”

A first-round pick (ninth overall) by Utah in 2010 and an All-Star with the Jazz in 2016-17, Hayward has averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 745 games (582 starts) with the Jazz, Boston Celtics (2017-20) and the Hornets.

NFL News: Bucs backs: Giovani Bernard in, Leonard Fournette out

The Buccaneers activated Giovani Bernard on Saturday and ruled fellow running back Leonard Fournette out for Sunday’s game at Cleveland.

Tampa Bay designated Bernard to return to practice on Monday. He had been on injured reserve since Sept. 21 after sustaining an ankle injury in Week 2.

Bernard, who turned 31 on Tuesday, had one kickoff return for 14 yards through the first two games this season. He played 11 snaps, all on special teams.

He has rushed for 3,755 yards and 22 touchdowns and caught 365 passes for 2,990 yards and 14 scores in 129 NFL games (30 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals (2013-20) and Tampa Bay.

Rookie running back Rachaad White will make his second straight start when the Buccaneers (5-5) visit the Browns (3-7), with Fournette missing his first game of the season.

Fournette sustained a hip pointer in the second half of the Nov. 13 victory against the Seattle Seahawks in Munich, Germany, but did not make enough progress during Tampa Bay’s bye week to get on the field this weekend.

Fournette, 27, has rushed for 462 yards and three scores in 10 games this season, his third campaign with the Bucs and sixth in the NFL.

White, 23, carried 22 times for a season-high 105 yards against the Seahawks. He has 357 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown in 10 games.

NHL News: Islanders beat Flyers with 4 unanswered goals

Zach Parise scored twice for the New York Islanders, who collected three third period goals Saturday night to pull away from the visiting Philadelphia Flyers in a 5-2 win in Elmont, N.Y.

Adam Pelech scored in the first period before Brock Nelson and Anthony Beauvillier scored the go-ahead and insurance goals in a 22-second span early in the third period for the Islanders, who have won four straight.

Goalie Semyon Varlamov recorded 26 saves.

Lukas Sedlak and Joel Farabee scored for the skidding Flyers, who have lost 10 straight (0-7-3). Goalie Felix Sandstrom made 18 saves.

The Islanders took the lead following a chaotic sequence 4:33 into the first period. Ryan Pulock’s shot caromed off Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler and Nelson briefly had control before losing the puck to Sedlak. But Beauvillier picked off Sedlak’s pass and dished to Pelech, who fired a shot beyond the glove of Sandstrom.

The Flyers tied the score a little more than 11 minutes later. Kevin Hayes, in the left faceoff circle, passed behind Sebastian Aho and hit Sedlak in stride before Sedlak chipped a point-blank shot over Varlamov’s glove with 4:33 left.

The Flyers took their lone lead just before the midway point of the second period when Hayes’ shot glanced off Varlamov’s pads and skidded to the far side of the net before Farabee swooped in and put home the rebound at the 9:28 mark.

A cross-checking penalty on Ivan Provorov set up the power play that resulted in Parise’s nifty game-tying goal. Pulock picked off Morgan Frost’s pass deep in the Philadelphia zone and immediately passed to Parise, who tucked home a backhander between Sandstrom’s legs.

A turnover by the Flyers led to the second game-winning goal in as many nights for Nelson, whose third-period tally Friday lifted the Islanders past the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2.

Seeler’s pass intended for Zack MacEwen sailed away from MacEwen as the Philadelphia center fell to the ice with the Islanders’ Anders Lee following a collision. Pulock picked up the loose puck and dished to Nelson, whose shot sailed over Sandstrom’s glove at the 2:57 mark.

Pulock then helped set up Beauvillier’s goal by getting to a loose puck deep in the Flyers’ zone and dishing to Beauvillier, who beat a sprawling Sandstrom stick side.

Parise added another insurance goal with 8:03 left, when his shot snuck over Sandstrom’s shoulder.

NHL News: Streaking Devils drop Capitals behind Jack Hughes’ hat trick

Jack Hughes recorded his first career hat trick and Vitek Vanecek made 37 saves against his former team to lift the host New Jersey Devils to a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Captain Nico Hischier scored a power-play goal, Fabian Zetterlund also tallied and Dawson Mercer notched two assists to help the red-hot Devils post their 15th win in their last 16 games. New Jersey also snapped a six-game home losing skid to Washington and avenged a 6-3 loss to the Capitals on Oct. 24.

With a victory on Saturday, Lindy Ruff became the fifth NHL coach with 800 wins. He has 571 victories with the Buffalo Sabres (1997-2012), 165 with the Dallas Stars (2013-17) and 64 in two-plus seasons with the Devils.

Washington superstar captain Alex Ovechkin remained stuck on 791 career goals despite registering eight shots on net.

Defenseman John Carlson scored a power-play goal in the third period and Charlie Lindgren finished with 24 saves for the Capitals, who saw their two-game winning streak come to a halt.

Defenseman Dougie Hamilton wired a shot from the point that created a rebound for Hischier, who deposited the loose puck into the net to open the scoring at 9:04 of the first period.

Hischier’s goal was his 10th of the season, briefly giving him the team lead before Hughes eclipsed him after scoring the next three goals of the game.

Hughes doubled the advantage at 5:59 of the second period after intercepting a pass by Washington’s Lars Eller before skating in and tucking the puck past Lindgren.

Hughes gave Washington a 3-0 lead after his sharp-angle shot from along the goal line banked off Lindgren and into the net.

The former top overall pick secured the hat trick at 9:51 of the third after converting a 2-on-1 rush with Erik Haula.

Carlson’s blast from above the circles put the Capitals on the scoreboard at 11:38 before Zetterlund capped the scoring just over three minutes later.

NHL News: Blues rally from deficit to top Panthers in overtime

Jordan Kyrou scored on a breakaway with 3:52 left in overtime as the St. Louis Blues defeated the host Florida Panthers 5-4 on Saturday night.

Kyrou also scored in regulation as the Blues snapped a two-game losing streak, rallying from a 4-1 third-period deficit.

Brandon Saad, Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for the Blues. Saad and O’Reilly each added an assist, and Thomas Greiss made 33 saves.

However, Blues center Brayden Schenn left the game due to a lower-body injury and did not return.

The Panthers, who concluded an eight-game homestand with a 3-3-2 record, got one goal each from Aaron Ekblad, Radko Gudas, Carter Verhaeghe and Anton Lundell. Sam Reinhart added two assists, and Spencer Knight made 32 saves.

It was Verhaeghe’s team-leading 12th goal of the season. It was also a big game for Panthers’ defensemen, who got goals from Ekblad and Gudas and an assist from Gustav Forsling.

Panthers center Aleksander Barkov, who scored 39 goals last season but has five in this campaign, missed the game due to a non-COVID illness.

Early on, it was all Panthers as they had a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal over the first 11-plus minutes. Florida outscored the Blues 3-0 during that span.

However, during the final eight-plus minutes of the first period, the Blues outshot the Panthers 9-1, scoring the team’s only goal during that span.

Florida needed 80 seconds to score the first goal as Ekblad picked up a loose puck, turned around and fired it past Greiss’ stick.

The Panthers made it 2-0 with 2:58 gone on a long shot by Gudas that handcuffed Greiss.

Florida made it 3-0 as Gudas separated Tarasenko from the puck. Reinhart pounced, and his pass led to a Verhaeghe breakaway goal.

St. Louis finally got on the board with 11:39 gone in the first as Saad banged in a rebound of a shot by Josh Leivo.

Florida dominated the second period with a 16-6 shots-on-goal advantage and the only tally, which came off a two-on-one rush. Reinhart got the primary assist again, this time feeding Lundell.

The Blues cut their deficit to 4-2 on O’Reilly’s clever turn-around, wrap-around goal with 11:44 left in the third.

St. Louis’ Kyrou hit the back of the net with 6:17 left, and Tarasenko tied the score with 3:49 remaining.

Torey Krug, who had two assists, then made the lead pass to spring Kyrou on his game-winning breakaway.

NHL News: Maple Leafs stay hot with 4-1 win over Penguins

Auston Matthews had a goal and two assists Saturday as the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs extended their point streak to eight games with a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Mitch Marner had a goal and an assist, Pontus Holmberg and William Nylander also scored, and Michael Bunting had two assists for the Maple Leafs, who are 6-0-2 on their point streak.

Toronto goaltender Erik Kallgren made 25 saves.

Rickard Rakell scored for the Penguins. Goaltender Casey DeSmith made 37 saves.

Marner opened the scoring and extended his hot streak on the game’s first shift.

With Pittsburgh making a line change, Matthews set up Marner for an open look near the left point. Marner moved in, swept across the top of the slot and beat DeSmith inside the far post 40 seconds into the first for a 1-0 Maple Leafs lead.

That gave Marner a 16-game point streak.

Toronto had the better of the play in the first, thanks at least in part to lapses in puck management by the Penguins. Toronto had a 17-5 edge in shots going into the second.

Things stayed on that course in the second, with the Maple Leafs coming out with a 3-0 lead and a 27-15 shots advantage.

At 7:58 of the second, the Penguins had a goal waved off as it was ruled the puck was dead before Rakell reached behind Kallgren to poke it in.

Holmberg increased Toronto’s lead to 2-0 at 9:55 of the second. Marner caught Penguins defenseman Kris Letang off guard near the right corner, stole the puck and fed it to the slot, where Holmberg roofed it past DeSmith.

At 10:50 of the second, Marner, from near the right post, fed Nylander in the slot for a one-timer to boost it to 3-0.

Pittsburgh got on the board at 11:38 of the third when Rakell scored from the right circle to cut it to 3-1.

Matthews got a loose puck in the slot and converted it at 14:36 of the third.

NHL News: Kings, Senators meet coming off of important wins

A pair of teams off much-needed victories will butt heads Sunday when the Los Angeles Kings play host to the Ottawa Senators.

The Kings enter off a 5-2 road victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday that ended a three-game losing streak. The Senators come to Los Angeles after Friday’s 5-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks, which also ended a three-game skid.

After two defeats with Cal Petersen in goal, the Kings returned to Jonathan Quick against the Sharks, and he made 29 saves as the Kings took a 3-1 lead early in the second period on a goal from Viktor Arvidsson and cruised home from there.

“I think overall, we need to be a little more consistent, stick with our structure and good things are going to happen” Kings defenseman Sean Walker said on the Bally Sports West broadcast during a night when he helped keep the Sharks in check after scoring a goal Tuesday in a loss to the New York Rangers. “Just keep going with that game plan.”

Arvidsson added an assist Friday, while Jaret Anderson-Dolan also had a goal and an assist, giving Los Angeles the early 1-0 lead when he scored his first of the season midway through the opening period.

“Feels great,” said Anderson-Dolan, who last scored in May of 2021. “It’s been a while, so it definitely felt good.”

Sunday’s game is the opener of a four-game homestand for the Kings. Then, they hit the road Dec. 6 for a challenging six-game Eastern Conference swing that starts at Ottawa and includes stops at Toronto and Boston.

The Senators are a good starting point for the Kings’ homestand and upcoming road trip. Ottawa not only comes off a three-game slide, it lost 11 of 13 before knocking off the Ducks this week.

The Senators will be able to empty the tank at Los Angeles in their road-trip finale since they don’t play again until Wednesday when they open a home-and-home split against the New York Rangers.

Friday was the Senators’ highest scoring game since their early-season eruption when they came away with 18 goals in a three-game stretch that was part of a promising four-game winning streak.

Derick Brassard and Mathieu Joseph each had a goal with two assists against the Ducks. If there was any sense of disappointment, it was that goalie Cam Talbot lost his shutout with just under three minutes remaining. Talbot made 31 saves.

The victory had a similar vibe to the Senators’ 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 16, but that one lacked any staying power when the recent three-game losing streak followed.

Ottawa not only scored three power-play goals Friday, it also killed all six opportunities Anaheim had with a man advantage.

“We had a really good effort (Friday),” said Ottawa’s Brady Tkachuk, who added a goal of his own. “Special teams came up big, (the penalty kill) was great and the power play showed up when we needed it to. Overall, it was a really fun experience.”
