Celtics riding role players ahead of meeting with Wizards

The NBA-leading Boston Celtics start with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

It takes a whole lot more to rise to the top with a 15-4 record and 11 wins in a 12-game span.

Who will step up Sunday night as the Celtics look to continue their run of play against the Washington Wizards? There are plenty of options.

With Brown and Marcus Smart in foul trouble, Boston turned to Payton Pritchard and Luke Kornet in Friday’s 122-104 win. The duo combined to score 14 second-half points as the Celtics overcame a third-quarter deficit.

“We talked about it from Day 1. We have a lot of different ways we can do things,” Celtics interim coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Credit to Payton and Luke, what they do on a daily basis to stay ready. That says a lot about where we can go with our team.”

Tatum (30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including seven during a late 19-0 run) and Brown (25) still led the Boston scorers, but the comeback win would not have been possible without the important contributions from the bench.

“We’re going to be down six in the third quarter sometimes. And that’s OK, it’s supposed to happen,” Mazzulla said. “Right now, everything is going really well for us.”

Brown has scored 25 or more points in four straight games.

The Celtics are playing the third of a six-game homestand that continues with a Monday visit from Charlotte and two games in three nights with Miami.

They won’t have back-to-back off days until the halfway mark of an upcoming six-game road trip, concluding in California.

“We always have to find ways to get guys rest and steal minutes here and there,” Mazzulla said. “I think guys are in a great spot physically and mentally.”

The Wizards finished a rare set of back-to-back games in Miami, losing both by a single possession. Friday was a 110-107 loss, despite Bradley Beal and Kyle Kuzma each scoring 28 points.

“We did enough throughout the course of the game to put ourselves in position to win,” Beal said. “Just a matter of us getting stops on the defensive end.”

Beal, who has seven consecutive 20-point games and averages 21.5 in his career against Boston, had missed the Wednesday matchup with a thigh contusion.

Rookie guard Johnny Davis (groin), Monte Morris (ankle) and Rui Hachimura (ankle) missed Friday’s game. The latter two have been out for the last three games.

“(Morris has) had some issues in the past. It’s just been more managing,” Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. “It flared up a bit, so we’re trying to get that to calm down, get the strength and mobility back.”

The Celtics have won the last three head-to-head meetings, and this will be the second of the season in Boston.

On Oct. 30, Brown logged a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 112-94 win.

Kristaps Porzingis had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Wizards. It was one of his team-leading six double-doubles.

NCAAF News: Kentucky defeats Louisville for fourth straight time

Kentucky’s Will Levis tossed two touchdown passes, Chris Rodriguez Jr. set a record for 100-yard games, and the Wildcats beat No. 25 Louisville 26-13 for the fourth straight time in the state rivalry on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.

Levis was 11-for-19 for 188 yards with touchdown passes to Dane Key and Barion Brown. Rodriguez notched his program-best 20th 100-yard game by rushing 24 times for 120 yards, breaking the mark of 19 held by Benny Snell Jr. (2016-18).

Matt Ruffolo kicked four field goals as the Wildcats (7-5) moved to 19-15 overall in the series and evened their home record at 10-10 against Louisville (7-5).

Cardinals quarterback Brock Domann started but struggled, going 14-for-21 for 129 yards with a TD and interception. Malik Cunningham replaced him and went 3-for-6 for 16 yards and one interception overall, but Domann returned in the second half for the game’s remainder.

Cunningham ran for the squad’s first score, giving him 50 career TDs on the ground and eclipsing the record-setting career tally of former Louisville star Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner.

Jawhar Jordan rushed for a game-high 145 yards on 22 carries, and Tyler Hudson caught a TD pass.

In the first quarter, Levis, a senior, produced the game’s first score when he hit Key on an 8-yard strike to end a five-play, 86-yard drive.

The Cardinals’ ensuing series was successful until the Wildcats stuffed Jordan on fourth-and-1. The home side capitalized by going 62 yards, culminating with Ruffolo’s 43-yard boot.

Kentucky linebacker J.J. Weaver sacked Domann, forced a fumble, recovered it and ran 14 yards to the Louisville 6-yard line. Ruffolo then tacked on another field goal, from 29 yards, for a 13-0 advantage.

After failing to score on its first three drives, Louisville replaced Domann with Cunningham. The senior perked up the offense and sent it on its first scoring drive late in the second quarter. His scramble for 6 yards gave him the milestone mark and left the Cardinals down 13-7 at halftime.

Following Ruffolo’s third boot, a 35-yarder, Trevin Wallace intercepted Cunningham to set up Levis’ 3-yard lob to Brown for a 23-7 lead at 6:35.

In the fourth quarter, Ruffolo made it 4-for-4 with a 40-yarder, but Domann found Hudson from 27 yards with 7:03 left.

Cavaliers, Pistons meet while facing injury woes

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ four-game winning streak ended in Milwaukee on Friday at the start of a three-game road trip.

They’ll try to build a new one when they visit the banged-up Pistons in Detroit on Sunday.

Cleveland led the Bucks by 11 points at halftime but fell apart in the third quarter, getting outscored 35-10.

“This is a great lesson for us,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “We played against an established team who knows where they need to go when it’s time to take it to another level. I think that’s what we are learning. They are a championship-caliber team and we are learning how to get there.”

Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 29 points and Darius Garland added 20, but the backcourt duo had as many turnovers (four) as assists. Cleveland recorded 12 assists while shooting 39.1 percent from the field.

“They turned up their pressure defensively. They turned it up to a level that we haven’t seen, we haven’t experienced. That’s playoff basketball,” Mitchell said. “Just understanding that they’re going to turn up their physicality and everything has to be sharper, everything has to be more precise. Just understanding that’s the level we have to get to and that’s playoff basketball. … We have things to learn and improve on but we’re not in here pouting.”

Losing center Jarrett Allen to a hip injury contributed to the second-half collapse. He took a hard fall in the first half and played briefly in the second before departing.

It remains to be seen if he’ll need some time off.

“He’s sore. He wasn’t able to go. He gave it a try coming out but wasn’t able to go,” Bickerstaff said. “He fell early, landed on it. If Jarrett can go, he plays. It had to be pretty bad for him to not go.”

The Cavaliers have already won in Detroit this month. They recorded a 112-88 victory on Nov. 4.

Mitchell and Garland sat out, but Allen picked up the slack, scoring 23 points.

Detroit played without four starters in Phoenix on Friday but hung tough before succumbing 108-102.

Star guard Cade Cunningham is out indefinitely with a shin injury. Saddiq Bey (ankle), Isaiah Stewart (toe) and Jaden Ivey (knee) were also sidelined, though Bey and Ivey might return on Sunday.

The team’s other starter, Bojan Bogdanovic, suffered an ankle injury in the late going.

Yet the Suns couldn’t put the game away until the final minute.

“We have to look at it from a positive standpoint,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “We’re out four starters and the guys that stepped in did their job. I’m proud of them for that.”

Bogdanovic finished with 19 points and Killian Hayes flirted with a triple-double (17 points, nine assists, eight rebounds). Alec Burks added 17 points off the bench.

“It’s disappointing because the guys played their hearts out,” Casey said. “They competed at a high level. We had one point guard, basically. Eighteen turnovers, which broke our back. But I thought guys competed at a very high level, defensively, offensively with one of the best teams in the league.”

NCAAF News: Taulia Tagovailoa sets Maryland QB mark in rout of Rutgers

Roman Hemby ran for three touchdowns and the Maryland defense held Rutgers to 120 yards and five first downs as the Terrapins celebrated Senior Day with a 37-0 shutout Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md.

Senior Taulia Tagovailoa completed 25 of 37 passes for 342 yards and a touchdown as Maryland improved to 7-5 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten. The touchdown pass was the 50th for Tagovailoa as he became the program’s all-time leader in the category.

Jeshaun Jones caught the scoring pass, a 27-yarder in the fourth quarter, and finished with nine receptions for 152 yards, coming up big in the absence of top receiver Rakim Jarrett, who was out with an injury.

Rutgers (4-8, 1-8) generated little offense against the stingy Maryland defense as Gavin Wimsatt completed 5 of 13 passes for 48 yards. The Scarlet Knights came up empty on all 11 of their third-down conversion tries and never crossed the Maryland 45.

The Terps got off to a slow start, committing turnovers on two of its first three possessions. But Rutgers couldn’t take advantage of either of Wesley Brown’s fumble recoveries.

The Scarlet Knights went three and out after the first turnover and turned it over on downs after the second as Maryland’s Anthony Booker Jr. lassoed Chris Long for a three-yard loss on a fourth-and-1 play.

On Maryland’s ensuing possession, Hemby scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to cap a 53-yard drive.

Hemby’s second touchdown, also a 1-yard carry, culminated an 82-yard march in the second quarter.

When Tagovailoa was shaken up late in the half, third-string quarterback Eric Najarian completed three of his first four passes for 37 yards to set up the first of three field goals from Chad Ryland as the Terps took a 17-0 halftime lead.

Hemby’s third touchdown, on an 8-yard rush, finished off a 75-yard drive to open the second half.

Rutgers’ only promising drive came in the third when Wimsatt and Johnny Langan hooked up on a 27-yard play. The Scarlet Knights reached the Terps’ 46, but Ahmad McCullough snuffed out the uprising with a third-down sack.

Short-handed Raptors topple Mavericks, 105-100

O.G. Anunoby and Fred VanVleet each scored 26 points and the injury-depleted Toronto Raptors defeated the visiting Dallas Mavericks 105-100 on Saturday.

Chris Boucher added 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who had lost their two previous games.

Juancho Hernangomez added 10 points as Toronto gained a split in two games with Dallas this season.

Luka Doncic scored 24 points for the Mavericks, who have lost three straight. Dorian Finney-Smith added 16 points, Spencer Dinwiddie had 15 and Christian Wood scored 10 points.

Toronto took an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter. Dallas used an 11-2 run to open the fourth. Toronto scored the next five points.

Finney-Smith’s layup with 4:28 remaining in the fourth quarter trimmed the lead to three points and he came back to hit a 3-pointer that tied the game at 90.

Hernangomez made a hook shot to give Toronto a one-point lead with 2:46 left. Anunoby added two free throws, but Dinwiddie cut the lead to one on a layup. Anunoby’s hook shot restored the three-point lead.

Reggie Bullock made two free throws with 1:40 to play.

The teams exchanged baskets before Boucher hit a 10-footer but missed the free throw with 31.4 seconds to play. Doncic’s jumper cut the lead to one. Thaddeus Young made two free throws with 16.6 seconds left. Young then made a steal to clinch the game and Anunoby finished the scoring with two free throws.

Dallas led 29-24 after the first quarter despite once being ahead by 15 points.

Toronto scored the first six points of the second quarter and bumped the lead to six on Gary Trent Jr.’s 3-pointer with 3:26 left. Toronto’s lead reached seven before Doncic finished the first-half scoring with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 54-52.

Toronto used an 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter. VanVleet’s layup gave Toronto an 11-point lead with 4:08 left in the third. Toronto led 81-73 after three quarters.

Toronto was without Scottie Barnes (sprained knee), Dalano Banton (sprained ankle), Pascal Siakam (adductor strain), Precious Achiuwa (sprained ankle) and Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe).

NCAAF News: West Virginia runs to 24-19 win at Oklahoma State

Jaylen Anderson rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries to lead West Virginia to a 24-19 win over Oklahoma State in Saturday’s Big 12 regular season finale in Stillwater, Okla.

The Mountaineers (5-7, 3-6) rushed for 250 yards as a team, with Garrett Greene adding a rushing touchdown.

Ollie Gordon ran for 136 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries for the Cowboys (7-5, 4-5), who lost for the fourth time in five games.

Oklahoma State played without starting quarterback Spencer Sanders due to a shoulder injury.

West Virginia took a 24-19 lead with 5:59 remaining on a 34-yard field goal by Casey Legg.

The Cowboys then drove to the West Virginia 28 but couldn’t convert on a fourth-and-3 and the Mountaineers took over on downs.

Oklahoma State forced a punt and had one more shot starting at its own 46-yard line. Four straight incompletions by Garret Rangel gave the ball back to West Virginia to end the game.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, West Virginia went 80 yards in six plays on the first drive of the second half and took a 14-10 lead on a 54-yard run by Anderson with 12:45 left in the third quarter.

Anderson then scored from 57 yards out with 9:53 left in the third to give the Mountaineers a 21-10 lead.

OK State made it 21-13 on a 38-yard field goal by Tanner Brown with 5:59 left in the third, and then cut the WVU lead to 21-19 with 24 seconds left in the third on a 23-yard touchdown run by Gordon.

West Virginia opened the scoring, taking a 7-0 lead with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter on Greene’s 36-yard touchdown run.

Oklahoma State answered, tying the game on the first play of the second quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Brennan Presley before taking a 10-7 lead with 14 seconds left until halftime on a 22-yard field goal by Brown.

Heat take momentum into meeting with Hawks

The Miami Heat look to extend their winning streak to three games when they begin a four-game road trip on Sunday in Atlanta against the Hawks.

Miami is coming off back-to-back home wins over Washington, most recently 110-107 on Friday. Atlanta blew a 16-point, second-half lead to the four-win Houston Rockets in a 128-122 loss on Friday.

This marks the first of four regular-season meetings between the two clubs. Last season the Heat won three of the four games.

Miami’s Bam Adebayo is coming off a monster game, scoring a season-high 38 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. It was his second time scoring 30-plus, his ninth time with 10-plus rebounds and his ninth double-double of the season. He has been playing with a left knee contusion.

“It was one of those things where my teammates gave me the ball and I was taking advantage of the mismatch,” Adebayo said. “There were shots that Washington let me have.”

Caleb Martin scored 20 points against Washington and played a sound defensive game against star Bradley Beal.

“I took pride in trying to make stops,” Martin said. “Those of the types of situations you dream about, game on the line against a guy like Bradley Beal with the ball late shot clock. I just tried to make it as tough as possible.”

He’ll get another chance on Sunday when he and his teammates face Atlanta’s prolific backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

Atlanta wasted a combed 83 points Friday from Young (44) and Murray (39), who both had season highs. Murray bettered his own career high of 36 set earlier this season against the New York Knicks. It was the 28th time Young has topped the 40-point mark in his career.

“Defensively, we never established that we could stop this team and when we did force them to miss and they beat us to the glass with 22 offensive boards,” Atlanta coach Nate McMillan said. “No defense at all in this game … 122 points is enough points to win a game.”

Atlanta played without center Clint Capela (11.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 1.6 blocks). He sat out the game with a toothache but is expected to return on Sunday. Onyeka Okongwu struggled to replace him and produced only four points — all of them free throws, as he did not attempt a shot — although he had 11 rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes.

“I know we didn’t have Clint tonight for our rebounds,” Young said. “But we still should have been able to rebound and do a better job that way. That really hurt us.”

The Hawks have scored at least 100 points in each of their first 19 games, the best mark for the franchise since it moved to Atlanta and only two away from matching the record of 21 set by the 1960-61 St. Louis Hawks. Atlanta has scored 100-plus points in 40 straight, the longest active streak in the NBA.

The Heat continue to deal with injuries. Dewayne Dedmon is playing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, Tyler Herro has a left ankle sprain and Haywood Highsmith is battling an inflamed right hip. The Heat are also without star Jimmy Butler, who has missed five games with right knee soreness.

NCAAF News: South Carolina halts No. 8 Clemson’s home win streak at 40

Spencer Rattler threw two touchdown passes to Antwane Wells Jr. and South Carolina’s defense had a tremendous second half as the visiting Gamecocks knocked off No. 8 Clemson 31-30 on Saturday afternoon.

A 40-game home-field winning streak came to a halt for the Tigers (10-2, 8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who also no longer have a shot to make the College Football Playoff field.

Rattler was 25-for-39 for 360 yards with two interceptions, while Wells finished with 131 receiving yards on nine catches. The Gamecocks managed only 54 rushing yards.

D.J. Uiagalelei ran for a touchdown and threw for one, Will Shipley ran for a touchdown and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. returned an interception for a touchdown for Clemson’s big moments.

South Carolina (8-4, 4-4 Southeastern Conference), which conquered another Top 10 team after its 63-38 shocker of Tennessee a week earlier, snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with Clemson.

The Tigers face North Carolina next Saturday night in the ACC championship game in Charlotte, N.C.

South Carolina took its first lead on Mitch Jeter’s 35-yard field goal with 10:54 remaining, completing a 10-play possession that lasted nearly 6 1/2 minutes. Clemson punted on two of its next three possessions.

Then the Gamecocks were forced to punt with about two minutes left after Clemson used a pair of timeouts. The Tigers fumbled on the punt return and never got the ball back.

Uiagalelei was 8-for-29 for 99 passing yards with an interception. Shipley gained 132 yards on 15 rushing attempts.

The Gamecocks stayed within range throughout the game. They scored first in the second half on Jaheim Bell’s 2-yard run to close within 23-21. Shipley’s 11-yard run later in the third quarter was matched on Rattler’s 72-yard pass play to Wells just 50 seconds later.

Clemson led 14-0 and 16-7. By then, nine of the points resulted from defense. Trotter returned a Rattler interception 35 yards for the game’s first points. In the second quarter, a safety increased the margin.

Surging Pacers face Clippers, who are missing two stars

The streaking Indiana Pacers begin a seven-game road tour of the Western Conference on Sunday when they visit a Los Angeles Clippers team down its two superstars.

The Clippers were without five-time All-Star Kawhi Leonard for the 15th time on the 2022-23 campaign in Los Angeles’ 114-104 loss to Denver on Friday.

Leonard — who missed last season due to a torn ACL sustained in the 2021 playoffs — returned to the lineup Nov. 17 for three straight games after missing 13 of the Clippers’ first 15 contests.

He is again sidelined after spraining his ankle Nov. 21 against the Utah Jazz. Los Angeles coach Tyronn Lue told reporters there was no immediate timetable for Leonard’s return.

The situation is the same for seven-time All-Star Paul George, who has missed the last three games due to a hamstring tendon strain. George leads the Clippers in scoring at 23.6 points per game, is second in rebounding at six per game and third in assists at 4.3 per game.

Clippers’ reserves kept Los Angeles competitive in Friday’s loss, with John Wall leading three players scoring in double figures off the bench at 23 points. Robert Covington added 12 points and six rebounds, while Norman Powell scored 11 points in reserve duty.

Lue praised the available players for stepping up but lamented the challenges of being without two standouts the caliber of Leonard and George.

“(There is) leadership in the locker room, and our coaching staff has great leaders as well,” Lue said in his postgame press conference. “But sometimes it’s just tough to win games when you build your offense (around) two keys guys and they’re out.”

Indiana comes into Sunday’s matchup rolling, winning 8 of 10 after Friday’s 128-117 defeat of Brooklyn.

Four Pacers scored at least 20 points, led by 26 from Buddy Hield. Myles Turner added 23 points and a team-high eight rebounds, Tyrese Haliburton went for 21 points with 15 assists for his eighth scoring-and-assisting double-double in Indiana’s last nine contests.

Bennedict Mathurin also continued his hot scoring off the bench with 20 points.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys who compete hard, every single night,” Turner said in Friday’s postgame press conference. “One thing that really sticks out to me as somebody who’s been (in Indiana) a long time is we don’t really skimp on the little stuff. Guys are in here getting their extra shots, guys in here are taking care of their bodies, we’re eating together on the road, hanging out. Doing that chemistry (building) is important.”

Indiana’s off-court efforts have translated through the early going. The Pacers’ 11 wins heading into Sunday are just 14 shy of the club’s win total a season ago.

The upcoming Western road swing provides a significant test to Indiana’s surprising start. The Pacers open with a Los Angeles back-to-back, taking on the Clippers and Lakers, before facing Sacramento, Utah, Portland, Golden State and Minnesota.

Of those latter five, all but one entered Saturday above .500 — and the lone exception is reigning NBA champion Golden State.

NCAAF News: Big plays carry No. 3 Michigan past No. 2 Ohio State 45-23

J.J. McCarthy threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, added another score on the ground and No. 3 Michigan defeated Ohio State 45-23 at Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.

Donovan Edwards added 216 yards rushing with two TDs as the Wolverines (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) defeated the Buckeyes (11-1, 8-1) at Ohio Stadium for the first time since 2000.

McCarthy’s 45-yard TD pass to Colston Loveland early in the third quarter gave the Wolverines the lead for good at 24-20.

McCarthy followed that with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that took 7:51 off the clock by running in from the 3 with 13:10 remaining in the game. A defensive pass interference call on the Buckeyes’ Zach Harrison on a third-and-10 from the Ohio State 13 kept the drive alive and put the ball on the 2-yard line.

Noah Ruggles kicked a 27-yard field goal to pull Ohio State within 31-23 with 7:23 remaining.

Edwards followed with touchdown runs of 75 and 85 yards for the Wolverines to put the game away.

Ohio State held a 20-17 halftime lead even though McCarthy stunned the Buckeyes with 69- and 75-yard touchdown passes to Cornelius Johnson two minutes apart to give the Wolverines a 17-13 advantage with 5:24 left in the second quarter.

Johnson had four catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud responded with a 42-yard scoring strike to Marvin Harrison Jr. with 3:49 remaining in the first half to put the Buckeyes ahead at the break.

Stroud was 31 of 48 for 349 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Ohio State took a 7-0 lead on the first drive of the game, getting a 4-yard rushing TD from Emeka Egbuka.

The Buckeyes led 10-3 when McCarthy, on a third-and-nine from the Michigan 31, found Johnson along the left sideline. He spun from defensive back Cam Brown to score on the 69-yard play to tie it. After a Noah Ruggles 47-yard field goal put the Buckeyes up 13-10, Johnson was at it again for his 75-yard go-ahead score.

Michigan running back and Heisman Trophy hopeful Blake Corum was on the field for the first three snaps but did not play afterward because of a previous knee injury. He had two carries for 6 yards.
